This evening I see a new radio.com Android app announced (it wasn't there earlier today). Again there is the stupid no-Android-phone limitation in the Android Market. I've tried all my tricks in the various search engines to no avail. If you have a link for the apk file, would please post it? Thanks!
Tom
I haven't tried it yet but I went ahead and downloaded the apk. Still a new member so no links but here's the address with / replaced by (slash)

Thank you for grabbing this for me.
Thank you very much for taking the time to snag this radio.com apk file for me. But now I'm sorry if I wasted your time. The app loads quickly and displays the lists of stations. but will not play any stream. Whatever station I try -- e.g., KRLD-1080 Dallas or KYW-1060 Phila -- the station logo displays and the gTablet grays out the screen, "buffering" with a whirly graphic. The audio never plays. In Settings I turned on Mock Settings and restarted the unit. No go.
At least the stations play when dialed up in the Web browser, but if you leave the specific browser window the audio stream stops. There is no sharing multiple browser windows.
Again, I appreciate your time and effort. Perhaps Android phone users can make use of the app. I just don't get it. These Android tablets have been out for 6 or 8 months, apparently selling reasonably well, and the apps won't load or run on anything but cell phones.

It's coming. Google is just now making Android for tablets (Honeycomb.) Now that Honeycomb's sdk is on the way you can expect to see many more apps being built for these devices.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
Have you tried TuneIn Radio? It works great and it's free. You can download it at freewarelovers.com.
Thanks for the tip on Tunein Radio. I use iheartradio and Pandora on my Blackberry Tour from time to time, but I'll take a look at this app for the gTablet. The radio.com was interesting to me in that it provides access to many of the 24/7 all-news AM broadcasters around the country. In our situation, when away from home, we can listen to New York and Philadelphia news. And... these past few days... I find it amusing to listen to KRLD-1080 with the wailing and cries of pain on the weather in Arlington, Texas. Poor babies. Heck, here in the Pine Barrens of NJ, we've had significant snow cover since the days before Christmas (and today with it finally at 44F I managed to chip off a 1" layer of ice on the part of the driveway).
Tom
Blackbird, that TuneIn Radio app is great. Thanks! Audio streams begin immediately, and there are a ton (or two or three) of stations in the inventory, including the all-news stations I like. There is one station that I listen to that is listed as not streaming: WNAR-AM-1620 is a 24/7 old-time radio low-power broadcaster that actually does stream audio at http://wnar-am.com/. Gotta listen to The Shadow Sat and Sun evenings at 10 Eastern ... but I use an app on the PC to automatically record the shows I like whether I'm around or not. This TuneIn app was a great recommendation for me. Thanks again.
Tom
asdr, thanks for the reply. Actually I think the next question has be to answered by Viewsonic. Will these gTablets be upgraded to Android 3.0 Honeycomb? From what I read and in talking with a knowledgeable friend I get the impression the end user features are more gingerbread than substance and the hardware requirements don't appear to be all that different if at all. My perception is the underlying code will offer programmers and developers significantly more and better options to make their applications fly. But then I stopped programming with dBASE a long time ago and my skill set is sorely lacking, so what do I know?
Tom
TuneIn radio
I discovered TuneIn a few weeks ago after reading about it via another post. I had used IHeartRadio on my phone but could not get it to play on my GTab. Without the XDA development and this forum I may have been an ICrap victim.
With more and more radio stations streaming using flash players you could search out sites such as radio-locator.com and try out those listed there. Found it most entertaining in the past!
Just wanted to add my thanks for the heads-up on Tune In radio - great find!

Has this happened to anyone else. When using this application it causes my tablet to either reboot or it shuts off and hitting the power button causes the unit to start up again. Looks promising but I guess I will uninstall and stick with tunein radio.
Been using MediaU for the last two months... its doing the job for me!
Regards,
Been using radiotime and it is the best radio app available I think. It was not available for me in the market, so I downloaded it on my vibrant and transfered it over to the gtab. The interface works great on the gtab!

Even though the radio.com app wouldn't work for me, for some reason I hung onto a copy. I put it into my public DropBox for you, here:

While the Radio.com app didn't work for me -- upon launching just showing a non-stop whirlygig -- it didn't stop my tablet from working. I could just back out to the [classic] menu.
The TuneIn Radio application works very well for me. It drops to the background for listening while I'm tooling around the Web looking at news, finance, whatever.

UPDATE: Dec 17, 2008
older versions are no longer available here, the latest version is in the market under the developer name "snctln"
let me know if you have any problems with it

so I decided not to abandon development, competition is a good thing, right? and I am going to update the first post with a new build... in this new build there are a lot of improvements
- all 50 levels from the classic lights out, before it only had the first 5
- after level 50 new levels are randomly generated... I believe there are more than 8000 solvable
- added a hint engine... press the menu key and select the "Show Hints" and you will see a small red dot on the keys that you need to press in order to complete the puzzle, updates in real time, you can turn off this feature if you want by going back to the menu and selecting "Hide Hints"
- the state of the application is saved across instances... this way you can continue a game even if you restart your phone
any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
My main question is this: Does this app feel the like it is the sae quality as other apps on the Market? Or does it seem cheap and too simple?

(mods: if this is not the correct forum to post development of an android app please feel free to move the post or tell me where to move it to)
So I put up a thread a week or 2 ago requesting android app ideas and at first it seemed that games were in demand, so I started working on a simple game...
NoLitez is a simple game that take inspiration from the old simple handheld video game "Lights Out", (wikipedia link)
basically the idea of the game is that all spaces in the gird can either be turned on or off... the goal is to get all of the lights off. When you touch a light, you toggle the state of that light and the 4 lights immediately north, south, east and west of the light
I ran the apk using the latest android for titan build and it worked as I would expect.
So now I am curious if any G1 owners want to be a beta tester for me and tell me if this apk even works for them, and if so what they think of the game.
I only have very basic features implemented, and only the first 5 levels...
This would count as my first android application so please go easy on the criticism, but I am open to hearing all things good and bad
thanks for any feedback
i tried it out, good game. No crashes or hangs, works as described

Nice. Clean interface and classic gameplay. I remember when they advertised these things on television in the '90s.
On a side note, how's Android running on TyTN? There's not a week goes by that there isn't a new device Android is running on, but it seems that most of the devices still need some spit polish.

well I have a Titan rather than a TyTN (PPC6800, CDMA device, aka Sprint Mogul vs P4500 GSM aka AT&T 8525 here in the states) [but they do seem to be named the same]... and I have to say that android doesn't run too well on it, I have been able to get android up and running on it since July thanks to dzo's vogue releases but even with the latest editions the touchscreen doesn't work quite right and the button mappings aren't very intuitive to me... maybe I just need to give it more than 5 minutes, but my plan is to buy a Android Dev 1 or some unannounced 2009 android phone so I shouldn't have to rely on testing on an unsupported QVGA device... but I just got laid off last Friday, so it could be a while until I have a proper android device to develop with

I am glad that you are enjoying it, it is not a problem to put the apk up in your directory, I have a few more things that I want to do before I make a proper release in the android market, but I have a few questions and I am not sure if this is the proper place to ask them
1.) Does this application behave as you would expect it to as far as saving and restoring its state? Like if you get a phone call or have to leave the app for some reason when you restore the app does it save the lights on/lights off state? Does it at least behave as you would expect it to when compared to other G1 apps?
2.) I am not fully sure if this application would be allowed in the market because Tiger electronics has the "Lights Out" game patented... does anyone know if any other game "clones" exist on the market like say a tetris clone?
thanks again for the feedback
There's an app on the Market called 'Lights Out" already...? Seems to be the same game? Not sure who developed it though.

wow... you are correct, this exact same game already exists for android and I had no idea. Looks like I am going to abandon development unless someone thinks it is good to have diversity in the market, since I don't have a G1 there really is no way for me to test to see the differences that may exist...
I enjoyed putting this together, but I wish there was some way to browse the titles available on the market other than directly from a G1, that way I would have known to work on something different. (and after a quick search my second game that I was planning on making "4NARow" (a connect 4 clone) is already on the market too...
maybe if I pay the $25 and register as an android developer I can see the different apps available in the market?
so I decided not to abandon development, competition is a good thing, right? and I am going to update the first post with a new build... in this new build there are a lot of improvements

In order for me to see someone on the phone... say... my wife... she also has to have this program installed? It would be awesome if it was a simple as putting in someones phone number and you could get a trace on them haha... like in the movies

Yeah she have to have this installed. And you need two Google account. One for you and your wife. Run the program then hide it in the background. The stalking begins.. Lol
You can also view from igoogle. It says that it's unavailable in my location, but if i go to m.google.com/latitude in my browser, it takes me back to igoogle and latitude works.
Installed yesterday, working like a charm. Like a couple others have mentioned, it only gives me the download if I use PIE.
It's really pretty cool, especially the "exit but hidden" feature. I hate having anything in my task list
I'm running into a ton of bugs with this, on the PRoven 1.14a ROM.
THe first time I run it, all is fine. But the second time, I get a lot of nonsense in the menus. The left softkey says "your phone number" or "los angeles," depending on which screen I'm on, then brings up functions that don't seem to make any sense ...
If I uninstall, then reinstall, all is fine the first time I run it. And it goes wacky the second time again.
Here's the cab if anyone wants it.
This is an awesome feature...wife and i tested it today. Now my two oldest kids (sitting on WM devices) can't get away with the stuff my wife and I did when they start high school next year. I am so happy I'm not old. I'm such a ninja father!

Then it will be Xmas tomorrow, they get a nice wm machine
Installed it and it works like a charm. Combined with the new radio (for better GPS locking), its an awesome application.
Thanks!

post you list here of apps here
this is to help people like me who have never used android before
DON'T POST LINKS TO WAREZ....I WILL BAN YOU
you have been warned
Ok i`ll go first then! Even though i`m new to Android also....
1 Power Manager, something ive always wanted on a phone, especially when you have phones that can go flat in one day of use. Allows you to set it so that when your battery is getting low it`ll turn of wifi 3g etc.
2 Beyondpod the best RSS feeder.
3 Copilot live 8 the only sat nav for it as yet.
4 Bluex not tried it yet to be honest but you need it for sending files.
5 Netcounter for all of you on capped data packages. monitors how much is used.
6 Shazam obvious really!
7 beebPlayer A quality iplayer style app watch live bbc channels too.
8 Task manager does what you think it does!
There are many other apps that i have some ive not even tried yet. Some worth a mention are: YouTube downloader, XGalaga, Tunewiki, snapPhoto, last.fm, imeem mobile, locale, compass, and barcode scanner.
Feel free to ask me any questions on any i love to help....
Taskiller for killing off processes and apps.
Astro - file explorer app.
Agree with Co-pilot above - wouldn't have bought it without proper sat nav program.
Not essential but useful - Toggle Settings and Tone Picker.
Still looking for a decent movie player which seems a long way off. If coreplayer ports over the Hero will be complete!
Wikitude augmented reality browser - show it to your iPhone pals and watch them weep...
Second BeebPlayer. Really nice iPlayer implimentation.
My Hero came with the pre-latitude Google Maps - needed an upgrade!
A decent compass app!
London Tube Status app - so I know whether to run or walk out of my office in the evening!
Great thread- thanks for the advise.
However I cant find this beebplayer app... help?
Locale - Awesome app. Lets you customise your phone based on location, time, etc.
Last.fm - until spotify is released
OpenSudoku (Best one by quite a margin)
ShopSavvy - Barcode price comparison that works in the UK and gives you local results as well as web ones
Google Voice Search - Works surprisingly well
Doom!!!!
ScummVM - Has issues but you simply can't beat playing Monkey Island on the phone.
beebPlayer - Works OTA on T-Mobile, including live channels

what about MSN? i expect my Hero in 3 days, need to prepare also, barcode scanner, is that pre-installed or needs to be downloaded/bought?
Barcode scanner is free from the marketplace, it works really well.
Ive got some - had an android Handset as my main phone for 6 months and I adore it - currently have a Google Ion dev version of magic.
PicSay (and Picsay Pro) - Ive got the pro version - takes pics from camera or gallery and really easily adds speech bubbles, clipart, doodles, colourise, warp, captions etc then allows you to send via mms, mail, to twitter, picassa, facebook.
AK Notepad - very simple, easy to use and very robust. can back up to SD.
Twidroid and Babbler - might be redundant on Hero but great twitter and facebook apps.
Bettercut - allows you to add shortcuts for allsorts of stuff, and to edit any shortcut on your desktop to show your own icons.
UK TVguide - free version has a pop up on start and an add strip at bottom but small and simple to use
Wallpaper Set And Save - lets you use .pngs for crisper images
Jewellust - brilliant bejewelled clone a bit like Jewel Quest...
BookmarkBR - Backup to SD and restore your bookmarks from and to the android browser - great for when you eventually start wiping a lot and loading roms etc...
G-Backup - backs up SMS and MMS and a few other things to folders on gmail server. Auto back up is brilliant again if you wipe and change roms a lot you never lose a message.
Root Explorer - for when hero gets root - lets you go anywhere and options to toggle r/w and r/o in each folder, to copy paste and move stuff - dangerous in the wrong hands obviously...
Beebplayer is great, as is an app called Television, lets you download and run videocasts mostly from US but grand

I can't, no matter what I do, get a decent offnetwork maps program to use with gps location. I had andnav2 working using trekbuddy tiles created in the andnav format and ever since I used the rom (not a cooked rom) I can't seem to do anything correctly. Andnav2 will no longer recognize the tiles I create for it...for some reason the gps consistently, no matter which program I am using, believes I am still at home when I not. I can't find a decent media player that allows me to fastforward aside from MXzing lite but that is constantly trying to use the gps, which is fine if I disable it. My main problem though is the offline maps thing I mentioned above. I just can't get it to work, anymore. Is there ANYONE that is using an offline maps program that allows gps tracking? I don't care about turn by turn nav...I care about having offline maps that will show me my gps location and follow me; which I as I said worked when I first tried but I can't repeat what I've done and the only difference I can see is the new rom. I guess I'll wipe and try the old rom but if I can't use the new rom and have andnav2 work (or any GPS app that will show accurate data) then I give up and will sell the phone to some one on this board....seriously, this shouldn't be this much of a headache when it wasn't before.
CoPilot 8 Live - Perfect - as good if not better than TomTom and much better value for money. Also will move devices with you provided you are still on Android and ask CoPilot to change the codes to link with new device (They did this for me no worries after I swapped my handset) No network needed, and maps stay on SD card. Worth the money.
Dayzee
I 2nd Copilot! IT is really good, and what the android desperatly needed!
can I download entire maptiles for the US and use them offline (no wifi no data plan) and have the gps pin point my location on the offline maps? As I said, andnav was doing this (for free) but now I can't get it to cooperate at all and the developer has abandoned the project. I'm also looking for a decent media player and I thought mxzing would be it until I found that it autoloads at start and constantly accessing the gps for some reason.
I 3rd co-pilot.
A good media player is Meridian Evolve.
I am using Rmaps and I made my own maps using TrekBuddy Atlas Creator.
It is working great and I have the GPS following me very precisely.
But of course it is not a navigation system like CoPilot. It is just an offline map and it is free.
I would go for http://www.sygic.com/index.php/en/android.html when i have some money
You can of course try out CoPilot as with any software from the market an d get an immediate refund if you don't like within 24 hours. Recent copilot update has great improvements including qwerty keyboard!!
I'd say try it out and if its not doing what you want, sell your android. we won't cry.....
I'd love to get Sygic when they include Malaysia into the maps.
IMHO Tomtom is still the best there is.
However both CoPilot 8 and nDrive are both very very good alternatives and both are available for Android from what I've seen/heard.
Tom Tom is good, but you pay a premium for a little extra over the rest. CoPilot IMO is just as good but 1/3 of the price. go figure.
And yes you download the entire maptile pack and use it offline.
Thanks for the suggestions....with a huge sigh of relief after weeks of testing and search, rmaps and meridian are the solutions I needed and thanks to this thread I now have some good alternatives for turn by turn. I have no idea how I missed these two apps in my hours of searching the market but whatever, my torture is over now

I think the one decent person you spoke to at ALK must have left; I've tried to contact them to do this numerous times now and have simply given up on them ever calling / emailing me back. I would not reccomend the product if you expect any kind of customer service from them.
A quick google search shows I'm not the only one fed up with them for precisely this reason, moreover, I don't believe they make it clear at the outset that you cannot transfer the product between devices without doing through them - it's made extremely clear that's the case in the minmo version but not the android one

I have a Droid phone, and I see the phone when I go to my Market Account, Settings, My Devices. I enter the new nickname for my tablet.. [tablet, gtablet, Viewsonic G-Tablet, Malata ... all tried separately], I check the "show in menus" option. Press the Update button on the right. And nothing happens. The Maker, Model, Carrier columns for the tablet are empty, with only a hyphen. I cannot enter information directly into these columns, and whenever I try to download something, only the phone shows up. When I click on the little black triangle to expand the devices, I DO see the GTablet there. But it is grayed out with a question mark beside it. It says it is not compatible with this device. Every single app is not compatible with my tablet?
What am I missing?
Full Market fix
You need to change the build.prop file. Use steps 1-5 here:

I had the EXACT same thing happen to me. It was there as a malata gtab running tnt lite, and I had to do market fix again. Now its like it was never there. Is there anyone we can talk to at google about this? Like a customer support type?

Maybe it is just the simple fact that this tablet is not supposed to be on the market at all. So calling Google to ask why your tablet with the hacked market doesn't work probably won't get you very far.
What is the big deal with this web market anyway? I have no problem using the market app on the tablet.
Agree

+1 I just use the market on the tablet.... My device(for now) is showing in web market.
My G-Tab running Vegan 5.1 is working in the new market with no changes or modifications except editing the nickname. I installed an app to it via the new market already. Since I have a Droid also, I kinda like the ability to install on either or both devices. YMMV, apparently...
Nvidia VEGAn-TAB-v1.0.0B5.1
My tablet showed up under the web-based market as: "Nvidia VEGAn-TAB-v1.0.0B5.1 ". I added a nickname and downloaded some applications. Since I wasn't connected to the internet at the time it was held in abeyance. Once I got a wifi connection, boom down they came. So I can now peruse the market at work or as I monitor these forums, find an application, purchase it (or not) while I am still thinking about it and have it update the tablet the next time it connects. Not bad functionality for someone like me whose work environment is wifi restricted.
I still have one issue I would like to see Google fix. I purchased a application under one gmail account but after reflashing from tnt-lite to Vegan Tab I put my other account on the device first. Now I can't update that application without some tricky effort. Not sure I want to go through that effort or pay the $5 again
While that was me being stupid, I proposed to Google that I could envision the case where I might want to purchase an application with my work credit card and put that on their tablet and also purchase an application with my personal credit card. Their current schema doesn't allow for that. I can see where with telephones it might be a little more personal but tablets may start becoming shared devices say within a family.
What they seem to have for that situation is the ability to use more than one CC with the account. In that case you could use your work CC for some and personal for others.
Not a help for your situation, but it does address the situation you proposed.

The point was that there is no reason for Google to not support the g tab with ANY Rom. They support the galaxy tab, the. Streak too. Why is it ok for those devices? Is it because they are tied to a service and not just WiFi?

Google has prerequisites that must be met for a device to have official and supported Market. GPS and cellular radio are on that list if I'm not mistaken.

I'm getting the same showing up in my market access, but where we differ, is I have yet to have an application actually download to my tablet. I've gone through 5-6 different apps that did show the G-Tablet as a compatible device, and these were not installed on my tablet before going to the web market...
The big difference now is I am seeing lots more apps using the legacy Market app on the tablet.
I figured the first week or so would be pounding the web market, and things seem to be settling down, if just a small bit.

I think that they are not trying to give us a hard time as much as they are just trying to have some sort of way to keep things manageable. I mean, they set certain guidelines that devices need to follow to get market access so hopefully most of the apps will work. GPS, and cell type data connection are a couple requirements. Why? I don't know. Guess they had to start somewhere.
I think it is also done so developers can build apps that hopefully work for the types of devices that do qualify. Imagine how hard it would be to make apps that worked on every variation of Android out there. How often do we have issues with apps that don't work on one rom, but work on a different rom.
Maybe it was just to try and keep the market from being like the wild wild west...
Apple has it pretty easy. There are only a couple of hardware platforms they need to worry about. How about Android? There are probably a 1000 different hardware variants out there.
I really won't be surprised if they come up with a way to keep all non qualified devices off the market. Not that big of a deal really if they do though.
So far my tablet is showing on the new market and allows me to download apps to it. I'm running vegan tab 5.1 if that helps anyone...

You are probably right, i tend to lean towards everything being based on how these companies can make the most money. Like if what i said is true, maybe then google gets a bigger kick back from the carriers, or phone manufacterers. Its ATT 's fault really, lmao, since everything they do is based on getting more money from me as a subscriber. it seems loke they try to make evry feature, an extra charge, without lowering the standard monthly fees. (i know i am most likely wrong, it just seems this way to me). I am not askin for free stuff, it just seems like they keep the services i want out of my pockets' reach.

Web market woes
I can confirm web market was working running TNT Lite... stopped working after redoing market fix. Web market working again... after flashing Vegan and wiping data.
For the people with working web based market: did you change your android id? if you did, did you change it to a different devices id or did you use one from an emulator?
