I am doing this for a friend, I have done similar things to a lot of different phones. For the Moto Droid 1, after I root via z4root, flash recovery, and of course make a nandroid in recovery, am I good to flash cm7 nightlies? On different phones I have done this to you need a certain kind of recovery flashed (usually 3.0), so once I flash recovery from rom manager can that work for cm7? Thanks

I am very confused.
I have a Motorola Droid on STOCK 2.1 which I would like to root and install a froyo custom ROM. I have read so many guides / articles / posts on the doing so. I have stumbled upon "Guide to Rooting Android 2.1 On A Motorola Droid" at droidlife.com. My question is the following:
The guide says I should flash/install SPRecovery using RSDLite first. This will help me install a rooted ROM. But towards the bottom of the guide I am also told to install ROM Manager to install other custom ROM's. I have read that installing ROM Manager will "disable" the SPRecovery. Is this okay?
Should I use SPRecovery to install the very first rooted ROM onto the phone and then use ROM Manager to install ANY other ROMs thereafter. After I install a rooted ROM (using SPRecovery) will I never use it again after I install ROM Manager. Thanks.
On my wife's Droid, I followed the guide and used SPRecovery to install the original rooted ROM. Then, I put ROM Manager on there to start trying out different ROMs. I haven't used SP since the original flash. You still can flash ROMs with SP, but ROM Manager makes it much easier, especially when you become a flashin' fool, lol. With the SP, you have to rename every ROM you put on there to "update.zip," and they can become difficult to keep track of.
RomManager will ask you to install clockwork. This is fine as it will give you the option to instal SP again if you want.
Honestly I do not know the difference between the two and just let Rom Manager do the work for me.

So it seems i should use SPR to install the first rooted ROM and then go with ROM Manager's Clockwork Recovery to handle any future ROMS thereafter. Please let me know if I misunderstood. Thanks.
That's pretty much the best idea, I flashed sprecovery through terminal then after I installed a custom rom switched to rom manager and clockworkmod recovery. Clockworkmod is a little easier to use if you need to flash manually which I mostly do and has some more features that sprecovery doesn't. The main one being for sprecovery you have to rename all zips to update.zip and keep it in root of sdcard. With clockwork I created a directory with subdirectories for roms themes kernels and etc. You can choose to install a zip in clockwork and navigate to where its stored. A little neater, as well both have backup which is always recommended. The reason for using clockwork is mine has issues with mounting sdcard and system when I choose to flash from rom manager. It reboots to recovery and does it automatically which mine has issues with( can't figure out why) but through recovery its self its convenient. Mostly the only time I have to rename a zip to install is for baseband updates.

I have rooted my device using super one click (psneuter exploit).
As far as i understand it, this is the process i now need to complete:
1) Install ROM Manager
2) Using RM, flash CWM Recovery ROM.
3) Boot into recovery, and create a Nandroid backup
4) Flash Darky's / CWM / Cyanogen ROM for everlasting happiness.
I am having endless trouble with step 2 and 3.
In RM, i flash CWM Recovery ROM. But then when i boot into recovery, it still runs the old stock android recovery <2e>. I've repeated this flashing & reboot process 5 times with no luck.
Please will someone provide me with an easy noob approach, and please try to explain tech jargon if you use it.

personally I have never used rom manager to flash CWM I always use odin and do a kernel flash you should find kernel files (.tar's) at around 6-7MB which included the CWM mod) all you need is the pit and the kernel all done in a few seconds simply reboot to download mode and use odin to falsh the new kernel.
the file I regularly use is called CF-Root-XX_XEU_JPY-v1.3-BusyBox-1.17.1.tar flashed it dozens of times it's never let me down I found it on this forum somewhere.
once you have that on you can install pretty much anything from recovery mode in CWM.
I have a Samsung Captivate, and keep seeing people talk about CF-Root(I believe it's a program that roots so correct me if I'm wrong). I rooted my Samsung Captivate using Superoneclick. I want to flash Onecosmic's ICS rom for the Samsung Captivate, but people keep mentioning CF-Root. Do I have to unroot, and then re root using CF-Root? Or Since I now have CWM on Android 2.2(rooted stock) can I simply flash CM7, and then flash One Cosmic's Rc3.1 rom. Also can I flash CM7 from Android 2.2, or do I have to down date android back to eclair and then flash CM7. Thank everyone so much, and please help me move this to the correct area if it has already been made before. I searched on XDA and found nothing about "rooting different methods". Thanks again.
Rooted is rooted. If you have cwm then it doesn't matter what os you're on, in fact if you would have just flashed a custom kernel with Odin that has cwm compiled into it you wouldn't even need to root to flash a ROM.

Like Studacris said, root is root. You can also flash CM7 from Froyo. HOWEVER, if you don't already have CWM recovery (which is not the same as being rooted, and I suspect you don't actually have), you won't be able to flash CM7 from where you are now.
If you actually have CWM, you can just flash CM7 from 2.2. If you don't, follow the instructions here: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Captivate:_Full_Update_Guide
to get CM7 and go from there.
Studacris is right, flashing a kernel (any kernel) with CWM from Odin or Heimdall is the easiest way to go, and then use that kernel's CWM to flash from there. Because of Froyo's 3e recovery, rooting it doesn't gain you much in the way of flashing ROMs because the stock recovery isn't going to let you flash anything anyway, rooted or not.
I am rooted, and I actually do have CWM installed( 3 button combo works), but do I need to install CWM the way it says, or is using rom manager to do it ok?. I've rooted 3 inspires and have put the Revolution HD Rom on them. Just didn't want to mess up this Samsung. Thanks for the helpful comments.
ROM manager does more harm than good. Just get cwm and your golden. (by update.zip or kernel with it baked in. 3e recovery won't use update.zip)

This is what I was trying to explain. Just because you can get to the recovery console does not mean you have clockworkmod, unfortunately.
You have to install it the way the directions say to. You can try using ROM Manager, but it won't work on 2.2. You will get a signature verification error and it will stop. You can try it if you want, you won't mess anything up, it just won't work.
If you really think you already have it, reboot into recovery. If you have it, it will say "ClockworkMod Recovery Version x.x.xxx" across the top. If it does, just flash CM7 from there with the "Install Zip From SD" option. If it says "Samsung 3e Recovery" and doesn't have that option, you don't have CWM and you won't be able to flash anything from there, including a CWM installer.
As far as ROM Manager is concerned, I would recommend steering clear of it in general. It worked well in 2.1 but you can't use it to install CWM in anything since then and you tend to get odd behavior with it when using it to do anything else. Follow the ClockworkMod directions, I have used them several times with no issues.
Thanks apbthe3, you were 100% correct. I see that I have to flash a new kernel with CWM built in, thanks. I thought that it looked differennt than the CWM ON MY INSPIRE so I checked and it didn't load up CWM. Thanks again.

I'm trying to flash the new gmail/camera to my bionic. I have it rooted and running JB, but can't seem to figure out how/which recovery to flash it in. I tried recovering the stock rom in a rom slot and flashing them it seemed to work until I got stuck in a boot loop. The zips fail on stock recovery (any way around this?) and rom manager doesn't boot into cm recovery. What else can I try?

Stock Recovery has always been made for flashing ONLY signed official ZIP files. CWM recovery only works if you're on Bootstrap, which is old and deprecated, as well as possibly dangerous for your Bionic. Safestrap is the only way to go on the Bionic at this point and I'm not even sure of its abilities to write to /system on the stock slot

I've been searching all over for the solution to this problem and I haven't been able to find any sort of solution and all my attempts to google have been in vain. I've been having problems installing any rom from clockworkmod. I have a droid bionic with the system version, 98.72.22.XT875 the android version is 4.1.2. So I was originally trying to get the pacman rom on my phone. I flashed a clean jellybean rom from RSD and then I used bootstrap and rom manager to flash clockworkmod recovery. However every time I tried to install the pacman rom I get an error that says something similar to E: system cant find *blank* file. When I reboot my system after this the phone says that I've lost encryption and it wont allow me to access the phone anymore. So I tried downloading the cryogen mod off of rom manager and I had the same problem.
Any help would be appreciated.
You cannot use bootstrap with the jellybean firmware on a bionic, you must use safestrap. It is the only currently working recovery.
Clockworkmod doesn't work either (as far as I know.. Is there even a build for the bionic?)
Clean again with an fxz, root, install safestrap app, install recovery through the app, reboot to safestrap, create a ROM slot, install your ROM to that slot, and all should be good.
(The reason your attempts were in vain is because the boot loader is locked, thus some boot-time patching and workarounds must be done)

Safe strap works great. Boot manager is supposed to work also, haven't tried it yet.
