TwLauncher Force Close after App installation - Resolution - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi All, just some info sharing after I encountered TwLauncher force close loop after I installed an app. and how I resolved it. Searched for an answer for this but seems like everyone says do a hard reset which I do not want to.
Was trying out Dolphin Browser when suddenly my twlauncher force close. Think the error occurred because the browser tried to put a shortcut on the launcher but my launcher screens did not have space for it. Rebooting does not help as the twlauncher still goes into force close loop when the phone starts up. Almost wanted to do a hard reset but was thinking if I could go into Settings and remove the dolphin browser which may remove the error. After trying, I realised I could still go into the Settings by holding down Menu button to go into Search option (after dismissing the force close) and search for the Settings app. However when I went into the Settings, removed the Dolphin browser and rebooted, launcher still goes into force close loop.
Then I figured I should clear the data in twlauncher and let it launch in default. Same thing again, press and hold Menu button to go into Search. Search for app Settings and launched it. Go to Applications, Manage Applications, All and select TwLauncher. Go to Storage -> Clear data. And presto! No more force close loop!! TwLauncher now sets back to default, and the only thing you need to do is to customize/add back your launcher 'desktop' again with whatever shortcuts or widgets you want or had previously. No hard reset required which save a lot of hassle! So the error is basically data corruption which caused the TwLauncher to go into force close loop.
Hope anyone who encountered the same problem as me don't have to hard reset anymore with this solution!

Damn, you just saved me.

Thanks so much, I almost did the hard reset myself!

thanks man, i thought it's some bug from my rom, by now i see it's not. u're my hero!

in my app list is no TwLauncher?! Only TwWallpaperChooser...
But I think it is translated to "Startseite" (german) - can somebody confirm this?

I have the same problem - there is no TwLauncher in "All" list - please help

thank mate. although i find it useless but still i wanted it. thank so much

damn thus thread is a little bit too late.....I experienced it about 2 week ago...the only solution was to flash back my FW because Hard Reset didnt help...btw thanx for this coz it might be usefulll for the future....

Well, glad my old thread helped some of you guys. I'm not sure why some of you can't see the default rom twlauncher, unless you are using a custom rom with another launcher.

This sounds good and would have certainly helped me on the numerous occasions when I have experienced this, caused by an application failing to find desktop space to park an icon every time.
One small thing is nagging me though. If Search is not one of the last six apps I've used it won't show up in the Recent apps drawer that appears when I hold the menu button or have I missed something?

thanks bro this is great!!!

thank u soooo much
I was facing this problem on my new Galaxy S i9003 and had pretty much made up mind to do a factory reset when I came across a link to your post on this site - androidza.co.za forum
Thank you again - you saved me from a lot of trouble.

Thank you so much!!

Thanks for the wonderful info...

Thanks a ton guys from saving me the work of hard resetting my Galaxy Ace.
Note: for the people searching for tw launcher in manage applications, on the Galaxy Ace its "Sansung Home", just clear data and your Ace is all good again

I would try wipe and reinstall. I used fix number 4 and my htc apps have been completely removed.
I have to agree, I am also still seeing com.htc.worldclock and com.htc.lockscreen and clicking on them does in fact cause a FC. But I can confirm that those apps are indeed uninstalled, so I don't see it as a huge deal. I don't like using the manage applications menu anyways because it takes so long to compute all the sizes and load all the names, so not a huge deal for me. You think that maybe whiping the dalvik cache might fix this? Just a suggestion, not sure what it would actually do.
I don't know i will try it i just hope it not related to a bigger problem
I tried wiping via recovery and it tells me to flash via adb shell I'm currently running recovery 1.5.2
I have found that even on 1.5 if you removed a system app after it was installed on the phone that it still left a trace on the phone. the way I got around it was just by downloading the ROM unzipping it changing what I wanted to change and then rezip and resign and then flash then there is no trace at all.
im not to sure how to sign a rom is there a good page tutorial for it.\
Thank you

Wiping Dalvik doesn't fix this problem for me. I have the same issue -- "ghost" items in your Manage Applications menu that you know you have already uninstalled.
One temporary fix I've found is if you go into the Manage Apps menu and "Clear Data" in either "com.smithmicro.DM" or "Download Manager", all the ghost apps and pieces go away. But this doesn't last through a reboot -- those all show back up again after every reboot, so it's not a permanent fix.
Any others have any luck with clearing these "ghost apps/pieces" out of the Manage Applications menu?
(I'm currently using ZenEXP MT3G ROM 0.9.6.3)
I haven't looked into it, but I noticed the same problem. The app list must be cached somewhere, which is interesting because it takes a good 10 minutes to load the app list every time i go to manage applications, which is why I rarely use it.

Trouble with Lancher Pro (free)

You know..with me being new at anything dealing with a Android phone, can sometimes be a real PITA...
I had a problem with starting Launcher Pro. I did everything I could to use it but no matter what I did I couldn't access it. I was pretty sure I had to change the defaults to do this, but everything was grayed out so I couldn't. I PM'd the Impaler747 who has helped me and others like me out several times ( Thanks Bro ) and he confirmed the defaults had to be cleared..and suggested the normal approach to doing so,which was
OK, do this. Go into settings, applications, manage applications, and then scroll down until you find launcher pro. If it's not there, then you don't actually have it installed, which would be the problem. However if launcher pro is there, then select it. Scroll close to the bottom, and select "clear defaults"
After you confirm that you'd like to clear the defaults, hit your home button. A dialogue should come up and ask which program you'd like to complete the action with. Check the "use as default" box, and then select launcher pro, not ADW.

so I knew I was on the right track..but still couldn't clear the defaults..I knew I had it loaded..hell I even downloaded it to my PC then copied it to my SD..but I just couldn't change the defaults in ADWLauncher nor could I access the LP settings..
So..I headed to the LP forum and started researching as I should have first before bugging folks with NooB questions ..and low in behold a few others had similar issues..The problem was the given answer "Use Home Switcher" which will allow you to clear the defaults and go back to being able to switch between ADWLauncher and LauncherPro doesn't work with Froyo 2.2...So..figuring I had to find something else to work with CyanogenMod-6 V6.0.0-RC1 which is 2.2, I headed to the Apps market and listed right below HomeSwitcher was the answer to my needs..ClearDefaultHome..this little free app does 1 thing and 1 thing only and that is to allow you to clear the defaults and switch..No more problem
So..I guess many of the old timers here are probably thinking.."what a dumbass" ..and that's ok..cause I'm still on the bottom of the learning curve, like a whole bunch of folks about these..but I just thought I would pass this on just in-case some other newbie like myself was having similar issues..
So..to all the Newbies like myself..when things go wrong..Don't Panic..most all of the answers are available..just think it through..and go look for folks having similar problems..and what they did to fix them..Most of the time..along with a dash of common sense will get you through..

Go back into manage applications and depending on what launchers you have you need to find the one you are currently using; sense, launcher, adw and then clear default. Or you can do a search on xda for home selector and download and install on your phone. Once done open the app and choose which launcher you want.

That's the way it is supposed to work..but it would not allow me to clear the defaults..That's why I was having a problem...and went looking for a solution to fix it...It's all fixed now as I said before..but Thanks anyway for your suggestion..

HaHa!!!
See what happens when I don't read the entire post. I was using the app you mentioned, but think I found another one that is like Home Selector which lets you choose your default launcher. Does cleardefaulthome do that or just clear the default launcher until you press the home key?

The most effective way to change your default launcher is to physically uninstall ADWLauncher and push the Launcherpro.apk into your /system/app/ directory via adb. Firerat posted a very clean and effective method of doing this on the Cyanogenmod forum boards. If someone happens to have a link please post it. Remember as always nandroid first before screwing around with your system files.

While this may truly be a effective way of doing this,it isn't for the majority of folks like myself that have never or rarely ever use any type of command line prompt in a terminal window.
While I do understand the need to learn how to do this when working with these phones, especially while changing things around on them, for some of us finding a easier solution without a steep learning curve is really the fastest way of effecting the changes we need. Hence..the reason of my post to give a easy solution to those needing one.
Here is a posted review I found today of what I used to fix my problem..

I think I see what the issue was. You were trying to use launcher pro, right? If I read that right, you were. Clearing the defaults in the app you were trying to use would do no good, even if you could. You needed to clear the defaults in ADW, not launcher pro. Then mash home to get the dialog box.

I couldn't clear the defaults from either unfortunately. In ADW the clear default button was grayed out...and even though I had LP loaded..I couldn't open the program..even when I completely un-installed it from the phone and re down loaded it and re-installed it. That what was freaking me out I pulled the battery..re-booted several times...and was just about ready to start from scratch.. Luckily it didn't get that far and found the right app to fix the problem..

Ah, I misunderstood then. Glad you got it sorted out.

ADW launcher keeps crashing

Hi,
I newly installed ADWLauncher, got a theme and was customizing it.
Then when I changed a folder name, it crashed (The application ADWLauncher EX (process android.process.acore) has stopped unexpectedly).
It crashes as soon as it is launched. Worse, because it is set as default launcher, it restarts when I "Force close" it and crashes again.
There is nothing I can do but to press the Force close button.
Can't do anything from computer because I can't turn on the USB debugging mode...
Any help?

Can you get to recovery or Download mode to reflash?
Today I faced the same situation on my Ideos Mobile which has Froyo 2.2 firmware. I went totally insane due to this and started to search on internet, how to hard reset Ideos... I didn't get the desired results. I actually installed the Ubuntu Theme for ADW Launcher and afterwards my mobile got looping on force close. And I wasn't able to access any application as the launcher wasn't accessible.
Solution: I just clicked on the search button on very right side of my mobile and typed settings on there, and to my surprise I was able to access the settings app... From there I navigated towards Application Settings and then uninstalled that UBUNTU theme that caused forced close loop on my Ideos. Try this and hope it would work for you. Btw I am Symbian Lover... Just wanted to change the taste, so grabbed this Android Phone... Android is awesome

I have the similar situation before, boot loop after applying a theme.
if you cannot get into the download mode using key combination, you have to build a jig or buy one online just in case.

If you are able to get into the download mode, basically you just need to reflash to stock and start from there.
Go to data/app folder (find your adw launcher ex apps) then move to system/app folder see if that one will help.

I faced similar issue (after applying some new theme , ADW launcher crashed and no way to reset to default). I already solved the issue now and later come to this post so thought to help others.
Basically when ADW Launcher crashed, there is nothing bad yet to your phone and those are silly who do factory reset or flash rom. Actually you have everything and you just need to remove the newly installed theme so that original theme again come in to picture. Well, the point is how to do it when you can't acces anything.
The solution mentioned above works when you have search key using which you can go to settings. What if its not there? Note that if you have just applied there and ADW Launcher start crashing then you can again open settings by long press on some configured button (e.g. Home key) and select settings from recently launched apps. Well, in my case I actually restarted phone thinking it might change the situation but it made it worst as I can't access anything. Neither call nor mail, absolutely nothing.
Here is one hope. I saw that status bar still active and when I gave miss call to my mobile, I got it in status bar and then I could access my contacts. So I took benefit of that. I send mail to myself from my laptop with google play link to newly installed theme. When I got notification in status bar for new mail, i click on it to open my mail client, From there I click on google play link and my google play app open with that app with uninstall button. I simply clicked it and voilla !! It uninstalled new theme and I got default theme back. ADW Lancher now working perfactly.
I hope this might help others. Now I have configured some keys on my mobile to work as sortcut to settings so that in case something like this happen I can anytime access settings.

Thanks in advanced
This happens to me too. I already flashed a different rom, yet the problem persists.

I tried that. Hell, I even re-flashed a rom. O_O
thanks for the replies guys.
i asked the local samsung store, and they said it's a bug from the market.
so we must wait till the new version of market are released.
Do the following if ur phone is rooted.
1 clean market cache
2 run market enabler and select t mobile
3 run market the problem should be resolved.

well im glad i found this thread cause i been having this problem i have noticed it when its on 3g every once in a while but it happens most when its on wifi i have reset my tablet to stock like 3 times and have cleared the cache many other times. i was starting to think that my tablet was messed up or broke...
I think its a server side issue from google. I had this issue as well with stoxk and custom rom. Reflashing did nothing clearing cache. I did change my csc and spoofed to a german operator when my issue got magically fixed on its own.
I agree with above. If I remember correctly, this started since the last update.
ok quick question non android related, has anyone been having problems with gmail while using a pc, like it takes for ever to load or it stays loading? I ask cause I started having my market mess up and now my gmail keeps loading even thouth its loaded. I hope I made sense lol im alsmost falling asleep while I type...

it happens to me at times, mostly at work, so im thinking it's a firewall (at work) issue.. what i do is simply login to gmail (using chrome) and once the reloading loop happens, i open gmail in a new tab.

ok cool thanks i just hope google fixes all these issues soon

Launcher is broken, can't uninstall it or get into settings.

I was following a guide on here for installing Apex launcher by moving it into the system files, after I had installed it and selected it as my launcher it kept saying "Apex Launcher has stopped working" in a loop. My device is unusable because of it, any idea of how to fix it guys?

Can you see your home button, arrow, and star? If so hit the star (favorites) click on anything, browser, etc. After it goes to the page in your favorites, at the top you can pull down your settings. Go to applications, installed applications, find the app you just installed and force close. This happened to me after installing Nova launcher and I found this out by accident, or by the grace of God. Lol. Hope it helps!
This is where you start playing the tapping reflex game. Try to navigate where you need to go in between closing the force close pop up. I would try just installing the apk from the non system folder to get it stable. Then uninstall and try again or give up if you are faint of heart doing it. Make sure you have your permissions set up right before you try round two.

Same thing happened to me, thought I had a brick on my hands. Trick I used was to hit the favorites icon between error messages, and launched a browser. Then I had access to the drag down bar, which I used to run "apps" and uninstall NOVA. That reset to the default launcher.
Go Launcher HD was the only launcher that worked for me without that same error. I still have not selected a default launcher until I'm sure it is very stable though. Don't want to get caught in that loop again.
Yeah I finally got it fixed by going through ADB and uninstalling Apex. I had a mini heart attack, this thing isn't nearly as mod friendly as my S3.

Yeah, I had the same when I broke SlideIT keyboard. I thought it was all over, especially since this device is so young in it's development stages. Glad you got it fixed.
