Hi guys, i have a Brand new Nook Color that im trying to root. I will try to explain what i've done so far:
1)updated firmware to 1.1
2) downloaded super-nooter 12.25
3) downloaded win32diskimager and winimage
---i have an 8gb fully formatted sd card-----
note* i could not for some reason "restore virtual hard disk image on virtual drive", so instead i used win32diskimager and transfered the files over to E: drive (micro sd) noticing the files on the step-by-step instructions; my files are similiar except the "u-boot.bin" file that it reads instead is a VLC file saying "u-boot" and it shows the orange cone.
i've since then installed the micro sd card into the nook, plugged in the usb, to start the boot up, i hear the nook connecting/disconnecting with the laptop, screen is black, then i eventually get to the "n" screen...... it just stays there....
What am i missing/doing wrong/not getting?
i REALLY appreciate anyones advice and help. thank you so much
Does supernooter root version 1.1?
1.1 just came out today.

i thought about that too. is there a way to get the nook back to usable condition? and if so, what should i do differently?
thanks kindly
ok so i've done the 8 interrupted boots and have successfully got the nook to default settings by following instructions "flash back to clean stock image". i am now on 1.0.1, and will retry the whole process again..... i'll keep you posted!
Yes. The current Auto-Nooter 2.12.25 only works on 1.01 and not 1.1.
It will hang your Nook if you try..
To restore it back to factory.. the the data wipe then trigger the factory restore by interrupting the boot process 8 times.
Power up the nook, then as soon as you see the text come out, press and hold the power button until it shuts down.. Do that 8 times..
You can find more instructions here :
http://nookdevs.com/Flash_back_to_clean_stock_ROM
Good luck! And wait for a new auto-nooter..

To go back to 1.01 1.02. ...currently its the post right under yours
not sure if it will work if you are already upgraded to todays update. But you can do the eight salute. too.
Just an FYI it takes a while for the devs to work up roots for new versions. When a new version comes out it can break existing roots and a new exploit or variant of and old exploit needs to be discovered. Basicaly the old root methods may not work for the new versions. Always give it a few days for the dev comunity to catch up and react. Never a good idea to upgrade your firmware the day it comes out and then try to root.
Its a learning processes most of have gone through. read read read. Its all here.
Good luck.
Thanks for everybody that helped! I now have successfully rooted my NC, and am enjoying it thoroughly!
Cheers

Ok, so I promise I've tried to search for a solution, but I really don't even know where to start. Please let me apologize if this has been discussed at exhaustion, but the guys I've asked so far have not seen this issue. Perhaps some of you have.
I'm going to list EVERYTHING I can think of that I've done. Please tell me what I've done wrong.
1. After picking up my NC last night, I tried running the Non-Root SDcard method of running Froyo to try it out. I tried running Rom Manager but wasn't able to do much. I tried Flashing CWM and feel that might have been a mistake. Hopefully, someone can reassure me that was not a problem.
2. I was unable to get GApps (Market most importantly) to show.
2a. After Flashing CWM and removing the SD card, I found that if I tried to force the 1.1.0 update, it would error out and put me into Recovery. That was something I assumed would not be possible, since I was of the understanding that the Non-root SDcard method was restricted solely to the SD card and didn't actually touch the Onboard memory.
3. Assuming the SDcard method might be limited to not having Market access and was more of a pre-root preview. I moved on to actually Root my NC. I did the whole, SD-image method and let my NC auto-reboot. The method I followed didn't mention anything about skipping the Google Account step. So, I tried that with some difficulty and had to back out. I never tried the whole Youtube account sync. I accessed the Market, but none of my downloads will actually go through. Tried multiple reboots, but no luck.
4. I tried to root again to see if something went awry. This time, I didn't have to go through the Android Setup steps??? But, I went ahead and logged into YouTube. Then, I went to Gmail Accounts>Account Setting, but each time it just causes my NC to reboot. Market still doesn't actually download anything.
I know it probably seems like I'm trying to many things, but I'm trying to discover the source of the problem, but behind each corner is another problem. I can't think of anything I'm doing wrong. I'm becoming very agitated. This was supposed to be a simple process, but it is not at all right now.
5. Now, as a last ditch effort, I tried to UnRoot my phone with the 8-Boot-Interruptions method. Problem is, instead of restoring the device to stock, it puts me back into CWM recovery.
Is it possible that Flashing CWM has irreversibly imprinted itself on my NC and I can not get past it to actually move forward with the Market and such? Is there any way to reverse the Flashing of CWM?
Thanks a ton in advance.
My guess is CWM writes to the system folder no matter if it has booted from SDCard or not...
Try this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=931720
I believe that is the correct set of instructions, if not, my apologies.
migrax
For reference, I'm running B&N 1.0.1 and used auto-nooter-2.12.25.
It sounds like you might want to navigate overt to the development forum and do a bit of reading. I'm unsure why you flashed CWM onto your nook, but everything is easily fixable. It really depends on what state you want your nook to be in when it's all said and done. There's a thread in the development forum about restoring back to stock, doing so will remove cwm and let you start over. This is probably the best way to go as the current state of yur nook is questionable. Once you have stock working your best bet for the most functionality is rooting, and the easiest way to do that is autonooter. Definitely read the threads more than once before attempting any of this so you will know what to expect before it happens.

Just read through that link. Looks very promising. Dont think I'll have a chance to do it tonight, but I will report back ASAP. I'm hoping to get back to stock and then go straight through the root process as intended. I really feel that my unintentional CWM Flashing experience is the root of my frustration.
I'm hopeful that this will be the end of it.
Thanks again.
Thanks a BUNCH!!! It all worked out. Getting the .img out of the .tar.gz was the most difficult, but once I figured out how to use 7-zip, all was well.
I'm now rooted and have full Market/Gmail access. I'm a very happy boy
Hi everyone!
I am very new to rooting and this website. I have rooted my NC using a You Tube Video to go by. I have rooted doing the CM7 and also rooted using just the autonooter.
I like the autonooter version best because I have access to the market, plus the orginial B and N sites. Now, comes the 1.3 update. I love People magazine, and as of now, everyone is saying that is the only way I can get it. Has anyone come up with how to use the autonooter with the 1.3 update??
Thanks!!

Um...not to be rude, but have you bothered to look much? There's a whole (active) thread right here on the general board about this, not to mention the updated manual nooter thread in the development board.
For your information I have "bothered to look" .. I had some other questions, but I will look for my answers elsewhere!......Not to be rude
I was able to root my wife's Nook Color 1.3 using Manualnooter 4.6.16. Look for the Manualnooter instructions in the Nook Color Android Development section. Since the Nook Color had never been rooted, I just burned a CWM image to an SD card and installed Manualnooter 4.6.16 per the instructions. I ran the Fix Permissions from ROM Manager as suggested. I did have some issues with the New Market not showing all the apps that will run on the Nook Color but there are suggested fixes shown in other posts.
It would be great is someone would post some information (directions) specific to rooting a stock 1.3 with a Manualnooter file with a fully working market but I have not see that.

The manual nooter instructions are pretty much as good as it gets. The market not fully working is more a function of the market than it is rooting the nook.

The "Shopping" feature is working on her rooted 1.3 so I People Magazine should download just fine.
By the way, the repair to the Android Market for me involved the process where you force close the Market and clear cache, then force close Google Framework Services and clear data, then reboot. There are other tablets besides the Nook for which this process works. As a side note, the LCD density change and Market rollback did not work for me as it has for some of the CM7 users.
Let me know how things work out as I have a rooted 1.1 (B&N Updates are blocked) that I would like to get back to a stock 1.3 and then root. On my rooted 1.1 the "Shopping" feature is broken.
I did it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I followed the instructions on here for the manual nooter for the 1.3 update. I followed them " TO THE LETTER" ! and after a few min...and some nail biting (LOL) everything rebooted just fine! Now, it did say that my install had failed before it rebooted and I was still connected to my laptop.
At that point, I decided to just cut my losses, wipe and return to stock. but then it rebooted again, and this time I had the market and I could open my People magazine!!
So far I haven't had to do any "fixing" on it!
Hikersc.... I do recommend it!!

No, it doesn't show FB yet and I don't like Angry Birds so I've not installed that one. It is showing the other apps I have downloaded. If you would like I can try downloading Angry Birds just to see if it will show.
There is one problem I am having that I don't like. I don't have a back button, so I have to hit the U button at the bottom, the touch Zeam Launcher to go back to home screen and then start over. I may play around with it today, since it's raining!!

If FB is not showing in the Market then it is the same as mine (or my wife's). It is not a big deal as you can always sideload these type apps. Crazy Snowboard is one of my favorites and did not show on my 1.1 rooted so I had to sideload.
You need to use Soft Keys for your back button if no back button is showing (mostly B&N apps) at the bottom. Once you run soft keys, the little soft key icon will bring up a "soft key menu" that will home, menu, back, etc. Give it a shot and see if that works for you.

You won't believe what happened! I had been reading this morning, and turned it off afterwards. When I turned it back on, it stuck at the "Nook Color" set up menu. That's the first time I have ever had a root to go bad. I've had them to "not take before" but for something to happen like that?? So I had to unroot, set it back up from the beginning, and now have side loaded the 1.3 update. If I try the root again, I will do it just as the directions are typed!! (LOL)
Everything was working fine, I just don't know what happened??
Wish I knew what to tell you folks...I just went back and shut down my nook and restarted it. It always sorta seems like it takes an uncomfortably long time at the color flashing animation, but it went through just fine. What I did initially was exactly what I documented in my other thread...

I'm not sure. (LOL) I made a bootable CWM on an SD card. Then loaded the manual nooter on it.
I rooted it over again.. Putting it back to stock version, then side loading the 1.3 update, and then running the 4-5-18. and I ran the Fix Permissions.
What may be going on is I didn't load the 4-6-16a either time, and that may be the entire problem. If something happens to it this time, I'll just leave it at the 1.3 and wait until something else comes up.

If you are going back to stock, then simply apply the B&N 1.3 update like they say on their website (put it on the nook via usb, then unplug the cable, it will apply when it goes dark).
After it's done, don't bother with 4.5.18 - just go straight to 6.16. That's what I did and it should work fine. It seems that 5.18 is only necessary if you are going from rooted 1.2 to 1.3.
See how that works for you...

This is what I did except I used 4.6.16a (I also loaded a 1.3 kernal and ran the "Fix Permissions" from ROM Manager). All is well for me except the Market does not show FB and others. I was hoping a fix for the Market was forthcoming as the various fixes used with CM7 Market did nothing for me.

I know how frustrating this stuff can get, so I'm glad you got that behind you! I'll keep my fingers crossed it sticks!
OK, I need some serious help here. I've had my nc since sept., I followed the guide to put cm7 on an sd card and have been using it since then. I wanted to update to the newest .4 version but it wouldn't let me, apparently the sd card installs CMR on the nook?? I didn't think it made any permenant changes but I was clearly wrong.
OK, so no update, I follow the directions here:
http://theunlockr.com/2011/02/14/how-to-restore-the-nook-color-to-stock/
to try to get it back to factory stock, but when I rebooted and took the sd card out it started this flashing thing. It turns on but after the nook boot screen it starts flashing, normal screen/black/normal screen/black. I tried to factory reset and delete cache and that didn't do anything. I tried the directions in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1050520
and still the same problem.
Can you help me or did I really screw things up? I guess last resort is to go to the BN store and say the update screwed things up?
EDIT: Well, I tried to factory reset the nook after following the "Restore your nook" thread and it still doesn't work. Now it doesn't flash but it also doesn't allow me to download anything at all. I'm going to try one more time to factory reset things and see what it looks like after that. My computer won't allow me to transfer files to the nc when it's connected anymore either.
I have or at least had a rooted nook color. I was on 1.4.2 firmware, but last night my nook auto updated to 1.4.3 firmware. I had never installed the app to access the hidden settings and now I am paying for it.
If I turn off my nook or reset it then for about 30 sec. I am able to look at my android apps. It looks like a rooted nook, but then it will go back to the unrooted version. It is strange that it does this and I am hoping that since it boots up as the rooted nook did then I am hoping there is an easy fix.
I am currently unable to access the android market though when it boots up. I try to go to the play store and it says I don't have an account, would I like to add one. When I say yes it won't go let me. If I say no it does the same thing. How do I access the hidden settings now or is there a way to root 1.4.3 firmware?
I am really stressed and aggravated with myself and the situation at hand. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for anyone who can help.

In the first box there is other links you can follow out for guides and downloads you will need to put on your SD card to do so. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=949699

There are others here that were able to re-root after the 1.4.3 autoupdate. Just search a few posts back.

I had the exact same thing happen to me. I have two Nook Colors that I had updated to 1.4.2 before rooting. I rooted them a few weeks ago and one of them auto-updated to 1.4.3 before the other. I just rerooted the one that had updated and it works fine. I didn't have to revert back to stock first. When the second one updated to 1.4.3 I did the same process and that one works fine too.
I followed the steps in the [NC][1.4.1][1.4.2] ManualNooter 5.02.19 thread that I used to root them in the first place.
Well I tried to re-root my nook and everything went fine until i rebooted the nook. It is stuck replaying the cracked nook screen over and over again, and won't let me access any other screen or menu. How do I fix this?

You may want to root your NC again. Make sure you are using 5.2.19.
Check the OP in the MN 5.2.19 thread here.
First I want to thank everyone for all the help and advice they have given me so far, but I am still having problems. I have rerooted my nook. I also tried the partition repair zips on my nook and they seemed to have did something, but now my touch screen isn't working. When my nook rebooted it went to the barnes and noble set up video and I was unable to watch it or skip the video. Not sure how to turn the touch screen off or how I even disabled it.
Thanks again in advance for any help. I feel less hopeless now about getting my nook back to the rooted version I have come to love.
