Hi all.
I am helping a friend who has a i9000. I have done a heap of searching and can not seem to get this to work.
He has
Model GT-I9000
Firmware 2.2
Baseband I9000HVJP3
Kernel 2.6.32.9
Build Froyo.HVJP4
I tried a couple different ways and just get an error in recovery. I am obviously missing something so if anybody could point me in the right direction or give any help it would be greatly appriciated.
You are trying to help him enable root access on his phone, right?
Well, if that's the case, there are more than one ways of doing that.
Flashing a new kernel that has been already modified to provide root access, like CF-Root or Speedmod kernel, using ODIN, will do the trick.
You could also accomplish that by following an “one-click” rooting process, found here.
The latter one uses a method called “rageagainstthecage” which can be used even manually, using adb.
Should you need any directions, let us know
Enjoy!
Thank you. Worked straight away. I searched and searched and all the ones i tried did not work.
Now i have another problem maybe you could help. I was using cwm as that is what i am used to with my dhd and when i flash the recovery it says it has worked but when i do a backup and try to go into cwm i just get the standard recovery.
Anyideas?
I seem to have some issues getting your point...Which recovery are you trying to flash?
And what is the standard one?
Clockwork Mod. this is what i am trying to install. Unless there is a better one for i9000. as i said it is what i am used to with dhd.
The standard one is just the one that you get into with the 3 buttons as it loads. I am using rom manager and trying to make a backup before we install rom and it starts to reboot the phone into recovery like it should but i just get the standard 3 button recovery.
I see. Are you on a stock kernel or used any of the above mentioned?
stock. I used the one click with rageagainstthecage. I have su access now and rom manger is allowed in superuser.
Perfect!
Follow this!
i did see that and was following it. But step 6. It does not start and i do not see the option to reinstall packages.
Which recovery mode do you have installed?
2e or 3e?
If you are on 2e, I have a quick solution to that.
sorry for late reply. I dont have his phone right now but I am sure it is 3e

How about flashing Speedmod kernel? You will have CWM installed automatically.
Yes thank you. All sorted now. Will go flash some roms for him now.
Anytime!

[Q] Rooting Problem on Samsung Captivate Android 2.2 I987UCJI6 with Recovery <3e>
Hi ALL,
Here's the problem I have been having. I just bought and Samsung Captivate that had android 2.1 I987UCJH7 which I was able to root with no problem with OCLF App from the market. After upgrading to android 2.2 I987UCJI6 I tried it again and it would not work. I looked at app and it says it only works on Recovery <2e> for android 2.1 & 2.2. This made me curious so I looked at my recovery and it updated to Recovery <3e>. So I looked around and tried a couple of the different root updates that are on different threads on this site and non of them work. So question is, What is the right way to root android 2.2 I987UCJI6 with Recovery <3e> on it? If you can provide me with the correct download files and instructions that would be great! Please and Thank You!
Thanks I.I.
You can't. You need 2e recovery as far as I know, or at least until the source is released. You've upgraded to a leaked ROM that doesn't have everything set up perfectly yet.
That said, you can swap out the 3e kernel for a 2e one, then root, then swap back in your stock kernel (3e).
DesignGears's wiki on Ponack explains it.
Or you can just install Cognition like the rest of with a rooted captivate ROM less work....

Ok. so it says " This .zip file has everything needed" blah blah.. where is this .zip file???
#1 I would recommend ditching the oclf (ryans). Plus that app has lost its ability to root you due to terms and conditions of the market....i used one click super root to root my cappy. Have a look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
Thank you! That program worked. I had to do the Shell root first, though, otherwise it goes into that loop error. But after click the shell root button, it passed, then I clicked the root button, all good. Finally hit the allow non market apps button, and installed my first non market ap.. that app just doesnt work..
But thank you! i'm all set now.
no prob! enjoy
<3e> problem?
I flashed 2.2 ji6 no problem, also rooted no problem with super 1 click. Problem I have now is trying to flash pheonix 3.5. ROM Manager wont install from sd. It goes into downloading mode but fails to install. Is this because of the <3e> recovery? How do I fix it?
Help would be much appreciated, thanks!
Hello, I have followed the processes HERE to install Froyo 2.2 onto my phone and everything worked correctly and I have went back to the [STOCK ROM] doing a master clear and using the same process but that isnt the complete stock ROM I had to use Kies to fix the problems I was having. Ok, my question is I don't want to root my phone I just want to follow the process like did with using Odin it was so simple I just run that program and wala I have a new look.... What other roms can I use in the same way that I dont have to root my phone? Like the Cognition do I have to root or is there a better ROM than the froyo one I used in the first link above.
Thanks,
Chad
I personally don't root my phone in between flashes however must people do.I just flash a clockwork zip. To answer your question no none of the roms I know out there are available as a simple odin one click.

crystalhand, thanks for the reply. Im new to this and not sure exactly what the clockwork zip is. If you followed the first link the Odin to my understanding is a ROM installer and I did install a Froyo 2.2 stock ROM thew Odin im guessing. I just wanted to know if there is another version or something else that works in a similar way without rooting your phone.
Thanks,
Chad
Can someone tell me what I have to do in the easiest way to get a new ROM on my phone without rooting?
There are a couple different methods to flashing. As stated above, you can flash the clockwork recovery. Once booted into that, you can install the zip file that is your rom of choice. The recommended and less problematic method is to root your phone, flash back to stock with master clear, reroot, clockwork mod, and then finally install rom of choice. People are always trying to look for the easier ways out. Well keep in mind, taking shortcuts tends to cause you problems, and in the end, you end up spending more time trying to troubleshoot probelms than it would if u just did it the right way..

Check out the link in my sig for bay_wolf's AIO Toolbox. It's a all-in-one program that flashes stock/roots/installs ClockworkMod/flashes custom ROM.

Hi all,
i got my sgs like 3 weeks ago and started to work with it. 1 week ago i saw the battery mod which i would have liked to install but couldnt.
Thing is, i'm on a I9000-HKYAMN 2.2.1, the recovery mode is 3e which wont let install zip bundles nor i have be able to get into clockwork, also tried to install the battery mod via adb but it just wont do.
I started lurking here, and have been taking a look to the kernels and roms avaliable.
After reading the FAQ i got to clear many things i didn't understand but still i wanted to ask for advice. I've seen many different ROM's and kernels but im still not sure.
I'd like to get the 2e version of recovery, or at least be able to get the clockwork's one, which would be far able enough to do the little things i'd like to.
Where would u recommend to start looking at?
thank you in advance
As I understand it, you just need to flash a kernel using ODIN that is CWM compatible. Such as SpeedMod, or SOK, or DamienGTO's...just about all kernels on XDA, really. Once the new kernel is flashed, install Rom Manager from the Market and have it flash your recovery with Clockwork.
The first kernel I flashed was SpeedMod, since his instructions for flashing via ODIN are very clear and very easy.
Good luck
Thank you very much. Just two more questions:
Does it matter the version of the kernel? (ex. my is XXX, the other is YYY. Is it a problem?)
Flashing the kernel makes everything on sgs fly away isn't it?
thank you very much
Assuming that you aren't root, you'll have to use Odin to flash a new kernel. I would recommend the speedmod kernel. Here: http://touristinparadise.blogspot.com/2010/11/samsung-galaxy-s-how-to-install.html you can get the drivers, Odin and the kernel. Following the guide it shouldn't take more than 5min to flash the new kernel. You will get the ClockworkMod recovery, which brings many tweaks and the ability to run zip files from the SD.

Just get the latest version (K13C at the moment).
What do you mean with "fly away"?
No, flashing the kernel won't wipe your data or apps...at least it never has for me. Just be sure you follow the directions on the SpeedMod site EXACTLY.
Hello, I'm trying to root my samsung captivate. I originally flashed 2.3.5 using Odin a couple weeks before the official update came out. I remember seeing reinstall packages appear in the recovery screen before then but now its gone, completely vanished and I am left with the inability to root my phone. Can anyone help me?
Download 7.0A corn kernel (Odin version, not cwm) found on the development section. Flash it using Odin under PDA slot. Then use three button combo to go recovery and install root from there.
If you don't like corn kernel, search for fugu root and follow the OP instructions.

^ Agreed
and fyi to the OP...search before u start a new thread, because this very subject has been threaded a bunch to say the least.
Thanks, I will give that a try in hopes that it works. NExt time I will make sure to post in pre-existing threads!
ok, I think im retarded because I cant find the kernel d/l. Do either of you have a link to where I can d/l it?
Here ya go

Thank you so much, <3 you guys!
I have been reading this website and several others over the last few days and last night decided to give rooting a go. Trouble is - I am not sure where to begin.
Last night I tried downloading Philz kernel - PhilZ-cwm6-DXLR5-OLB-v2.7 since my kernel version is 3.0.15-n7000dxlr5-cl968032.
I then followed these instructions:
Download xxx-signed.zip kernel matching your ROM
Put the previously downloaded xxx-signed.zip file on your external sd card
Boot into stock recovery (volume up+home+power)
Select "apply update from external storage".
Now select the xxx-signed.zip file you copied in previous step
You are rooted + new PhilZ-cwm6 kernel with CWM6
What I got was a message like - signature authorization failed.
Not sure what to do next and would appreciate some guidance.
I am doing this basically because Ive decided to keep this phone a little longer, learn about rooting and try my hand at experimenting some of the custom roms.
Again appreciate any assistance / guidance anyone might be willing to provide
thank you
Is this the one you tried?
http://d-h.st/o9X
yes... i think that is it
download using phone browser. the move it to ext sd and try again..
case sensitive link.... my bad
Obviously Not. The link i posted links to the kernel. It should be downloading the kernel.
same result..... signature verification failed
The otherday I use PhilZ 3.99 for LR5 from his thread in ori dev. It works fine.

Like I said... im new to this, but the instructions seem simple enough (as above). Wish I could get it to work for me....
I saw you are using ver 2.7. On the PhilZ he has 3.99 for lr5. It worked for me.

i am downloading the 3.99 version now - see how it goes
tried 3.99 and get the same result -- signature verification failed
Strange. Maybe check if there a box in the stock recovery that can be ticked or unticked? Otherwise, check other root method from dr.ketan sticky at android dev thread. Many easy method, even an apk that root.

dont know if this is relevant to the issue, but here it goes
About a month ago, I let the phone update some software - didnt really pay attention what it was updating as i was working.
Later that day i noticed my company email was not coming through. I raised a ticket with IT and received a response after looking into my case stating that the company does not allow rooted devices to access the email system. I found this strange because I had never tried to root the device. Is it possible that somehow an update occurred that rooted my phone?
Im aware that there are several ways to root, but again, im new to this would appreciate further guidance that might help me get this phone rooted.
thanks again
I would try method 0 and 1B from dr.ketan thread below.

Let us know how it goes.

willing to try these methods - if i start with method 0, how do i go about flashing with a safe kernel?
i have read quite a bit about kernel issues for 4.0.4 so just dont want to create a serious issue

once rooted, use mobile odin to flash tar.md5 version of philz kernel, not zip
ok.... im rooted - thanks to both of you for the assistance.
now.... im rooted at 4.0.4. If i want to install a custom rom say for 4.2 or 4.3, I guess I need to root to the appropriate operating system. how does this process work? do i need to first flash to a safe kernel?
bear with me.... this is very complicated for my non-IT brain : )
The most reliable roms now are still stockbased custom roms 4.12. Other newer roms are still experimental. I like Sweet rom 10.5. You need to read instructions for rom flashing from the rom thread.

i have downloaded the following files to computer and getting ready to place them on my phone:
PhilZ-cwm6-DXLR5-OLB-3.99.tar.md5
MobileODIN_FlashKernel_N7000-v3.0
MobileODINLite-v3.85.apk
Is there any special instructions i need to be aware of for mobile odin? I assume i just run the apk program and follow instructions from there to get my safe kernel flashed?
