I was recently attempting to flash my captivate with a new rom while following an XDA guide on youtube. I am pretty sure my phone is soft-bricked because Odin got stuck and i was forced to remove my phone. Now my captivate won't turn on and the only thing I can get it to do is enter download mode. Odin still recognizes it but if i click start, now it gets stuck on file analysis. Please Help!

I've seen this problem posted before on the forums. I believe there solution was to remove the battery, SIM, & external SD card. Let the phone sit without the battery for about 5 minutes to fully discharge any capacitor that may be in there.
Start Odin, Odin must be running first. Then connect your phone in download mode. Try it 'start' again and see if it works. Good luck.
unfortunately, it didn't work. It is still stuck on file analysis.
*UPDATE* now it does get past file analysis, however gets stuck on do not turn off target. I start odin first, then plug in phone into download mode, so the order of operations isnt the issue here
what is your build number? try odin3, not the one-click.
thanks for the response mengbo, my build number is whatever the latest one for ATT is. (JH6, JH7? ) I don't remember the exact one. and Ill give odin3 a try. Is there any way you could link me to it? I have been searching for it to no avail.

the build number is under your battery, 4 digits, like 1008, 1010, etc. i am searching the odin3 for you now.

The JH# is your modem. Like mengbo said, the build number is under your battery. It will be 10## typically. That indicates the year and then month your phone was manufactured. My first captivate said 1008, August 2010. My current one is a refurb 1007. July 2010. Some of the batches have issues with Odin. I haven't used Odin3 before for any flashing, just the one-click version so good luck. Sorry I couldn't help work out your problem.
My build number is 10.07
i found a link :

Hey there, i have searched around for a day or so and found a similar post on here but no real answers thus far. There is a ton of information out there so i may have missed it but my phone is having issues so i really need to wipe and go back to stock, then update from there...
Running Cognition v2.2 Beta5.5 UCJ16. Love the rom but i have had some issues and decided to upgrade to the new Cog rom then found out i cant without going back to stock first. Tried to do that with "Odin" but i get the USB not recognized when going into download mode, Odin will not pick up the phone. I did read the entire Odin faq and saw that other ppl have had this issue but did not really find a solution. I can get into dl mode fine and i've never ever had an issue with my cpu not picking up the phone via the USB until now. Tried the adb reboot, volume buttons, everything in the faq, it's a no go & all my drivers are up to date. So far i can't do anything and it's getting a bit frustrating lol.. I rooted with the Galaxy S One click Root by TGA_Gunnman, not sure if that helps any.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance!!
Also meant to ask, if i can't go upgrade to the new version of cognition can i flash from that one to a different rom and them maybe back to 2.1? I'm not a noob to rooting and flashing i did my last 2 phones and have rooted this one, i haven't had one single problem with anything of my phones until this one...
Try a different us port the ones on the back seem to work better
Already tried that same result, it won't recognize the device. I have to go out of town in a few days and need my phone to quit acting up lol. If i can't get it resolved by tomorrow i guess i'll just start trying to flash other roms and see if i can find one it will take and go from there..

Usb debugging turned on? You have odin opened up BEFORE you put your phone in download mode? Technically you don't have to odin to stock you just have to odin to a Rom that has 2e recovery. So you could try that if you can't get one click odin to work.

Yes i tried it with de-bugging turned on and odin running before hand. Pretty much tried everything in the Odin thread and about everything else i could find with google. The phone's just acting funky and not accepting it

How are you putting your phone into download mode?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I'm getting into download mode through doing the volume up/down then inserting the usb cable with the sim and everything out. I believe it's method 3 listed in the Odin post, it does go into download mode but i still get "USB not recognized" from both the front and back ports..
Finally got it fixed! Just tried it out on my friends laptop and everything worked flawlessly. Must be a problem in my Desktops USB somewhere but it is still odd as it worked fine and still does, just didn't work with Odin. I've seen other people with the same issue hopefully someone else can learn from my mistakes....Just try another PC lol.

Having trouble with a ROM. It is putting me into boot loop. I have ODIN flasher installed and I've seen 2 ways to make ODIN QF see my phone.
1)turn phone on go into shut down screen and select download. Can't do this, can't get beyond boot loop.
2)volume down>ok>power, This is a problem, there is no OK button on a Captivate!
So what are my choices? I need to flash back to a stock version.
Thanks, Tom
Just turn your phone off completely. Have Odin up on your computer and the USB cable plugged in just to the computer. Hold the volume buttons on the left side of the phone. . WHILE holding the volume buttons plug in the usb cable into the phone. It will get into Download mode and all you have to do is click start in Odin from there. Hope this Helps
I have a T mobile vibrant and don't know if this will work for you but it did for me so give it a shot.
Start up Odin on your computer. Plug in a usb cord into a port on the pc. Don't plug it into the phone yet.
Turn the phone off
At the same time press the volume up and down buttons together.
While holding them both plug in the micro usb plug into the phone. Wait a few seconds and it should start up download mode.
Goodluck.

Guys come on, I just need help. I read it all, every thing matters to me!
AT&T. I think 1007 (there is nothing specific that says build #)
I have both ODIN Flasher & ODIN3 one-click
A note on ODIN, I have used it on this phone, It's how I originally flashed the phone (ODIN3 OC), however when I try the download method my computer is indicating a connection but neither OC nor Flasher see the phone.
I've also watched and read about ODIN3 OC and in all cases you need the phone on to work! Did I miss something?
So you are going into down load mode with odin open already and it is not recognizing your device?
With your build use one click for ease if use

Tried several more times. PC has 6 ports on back and 6 on front. NEVER had a problem doing anything with this phone on the PC w/ months of use. Not today, TRIED THEM ALL, Samsung what's up w/ that! Laptop finally worked I don't get it..... prob never will.
Oh well thanks for the info and help.
IT WORKS
To preface, this is my friend's phone, mine works fine. (Running Percpetion 10.3)
If I'm reading it correctly they are both build 1012 (We got them at the same time, same store)
If I use ODIN 1 Click I897UCJF6, it goes most of the was through the process then it says RESET in blue. The phone starts to boot (AT&T screen) then goes to Battery screen. It continuously reboots to Battery Screen if the USB is plugged in, or AT&T Screen if USB is unplugged.
Button combinations would not allow Recovery or Download mode.
I built a JIG and that allowed Download Mode.
Tried to use ODIN JF6 again, no joy.
Tried I897UCJI6-OCD-REV02-Low-designgears.exe and that works.
The problem is that it has Android Recovery <e3> and I can't get ClockWorkMod to run on it.
I'm just trying to get Cognition 3.04 on it, but I can't figure out how.
Please Help.

Back to factory!
I (1010) had the exact same issue before, but at that time, there was no such good tutorial for flashing back to stock and i messed up, so I had to send the phone back ...
As i know, the one-click only works for the build 1009 and before. Use the method method above for the build 1010 and later.
There is a one click that will work for the 1010+ phones.
I have one, same issue and this one works.

Ok I have a stock KB2 Cappy. I used Odin to flash back to 2.1 KB1 JF6
Then I used Odin 3 to flash a kernel so I can put on CM7. I am now stuck in the Boot screen.
I have no 3 button, I cannot get into download mode (my jig is homemade should i order one?)
I tried to change usb and remove the sim card to try odin again to get back into stock.
Nothing seems to work the only thing is my jig is not good either for DL Mode. I want to get back to stock so any suggestions. I tried heimandall did not work either.
I am really stuck on this galaxy s I897 screen.
Is the jig soldered? If its not make sure you are connecting the correct pins and use some black tape or something to isolate your fingers from the resistors (might screw up the actual ohms making it to boot up normally and not in to dl mode.
The bootloop was expected, you are supposed to check that you have a working button combo both before you flash the kernel (because it will bootloop and you boot into recovery and flash whatever) and before you ever flash cm7 because that is the only way to get into download mode besides a jig on aosp roms.
so, fiddle around with your jig some more and if you get it in download mode just flash the captivate gingerbread bootloaders, that will fix your button combo and allow you to proceed flashing cm7.
Hi Guys,
I have a similar problem. I am a total noob-I've had my I896 cappy (Canadian Rogers based) for about a year now; i fiddled with it on Saturday and also got the bootloop. I freaked out, and managed to further flash (out of frustration and confusion) the cappy with another wrong ROM, the I900. I managed to get it back into DL mode and tried flashing stock eclair or 2.2 froyo via ODIN. For some reason, whenever I start the flash (press start on Odin with the froyo 2.2 file on PDA), the progress fails at the factory section. I don't know much about jigs yet, but any tips would be greatly appreciated.
thanks
Chord in the back of the PC directly attached to the motherboard NO EXTERNAL HUBS, right click on Odin run as admin.
Once you have it working READ AND UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU'RE DOING, BEFORE DOING ANYTHING ELSE TO YOUR PHONE
This is probably the easiest guide on how to make one. Layman Jig First one I did I butchered a pare car charger to make it. You can just grab one from MobileTechVideos.com for about $8.

Hi guys,
Thanks for the link.
From what I understand, a jig is an improvised connection that allows your phone to go into DL mode. What if my phone is still capable of going into DL mode? My apologies, as I am at work.
Im not sure what you mean with your question. What the jig does is give the signal for it to go to download mode as was intended by samsung. Same theory on how your phone knows its connected to your computer, or the wall or the car charger. Its by manipulating the current between 2 pins. Keep in mind your phone should always be capable of going in to download mode assuming the hardware is working and your bootloaders are in working order.
I believe I read it on a different website that as long as your phone can go into download mode, then it is only "soft-bricked," meaning it can still be recovered using ODIN. I don't know If I was misinformed or not. I guess my question is, since my phone is still able to go into download mode, but the flash is still failing, did I DL the wrong ROM, or was the copy of Froyo 2.2 I DL'd corrupt? If so, is there a reliable source/site where I can download Froyo or Eclair?
I hope that makes more sense.

You are correct, if you can get into download mode you are not bricked. Make sure you are using the usb cord that came with your phone, plugged directly into the back of your computer. Make sure your SIM card is out, you're logged in as an administrator, and that you start odin before you plug your phone in.
If it still doesn't work, try another computer and/or another cord.
Why do people say take sim out? Ive never taken it out and had no issues. Just curious.
That is a practice from way back in the winmo days, sometimes the flash would corrupt the Sim itself. Not the case anymore for the most part. I'm with you never take mine out either.
Thanks guys, I will try this at home; hopefully it works.

I say it because, while I've never had it screw up the SIM itself, I had a situation where I forgot to remove it and then couldn't get odin to complete a flash on several attempts, resulting in a soft brick that I couldn't flash out of. As soon as I removed the sim, Odin flashed without an issue.
Coincidence? Maybe, although I didn't change anything else. If it possibly keeps me from repeating this terrifying event, though, I'll just keep doing it

Did you get a red "FAIL" message on ODIN? Because thats what I got several times. My buddy also tried and he got the same thing. The green progress bar completes up till about 80 percent and gives up on me. I'll try taking out the SD and SIM cards when I get home, hopefully it works.
Hi guys, little update:
I found this on the forums and used it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
Anyways, this worked after my second try. Interestingly enough, it worked once i removed the Sim card, which is what apbthe3 suggested..great! I'm just glad my phone is no longer bricked. Minor issue though, my phone is now an AT&T phone, but unfortunately, I am a Canadian Samsung user. New problem now. My phone is no longer rooted (never was actually, but was bricked in the process), I'm happy it works, but i need to know if there are any Canadians out there that know how to revert my device back to Rogers.
Any help would be great. Anyways, the link I provided works great, so its a great resource for our American friends.
Why don't you look at Cognition 4.x.x? Froyo stock ish looking rom tweaked out the ass very fast. Good rom.
Look in development. There are a couple of threads there just for Rogers users.
Before ppl start asking me, this is what happened. I gave my Cappy to my daughter and after months of running Dlev Rom, I decided to upgrade to ICS. She was not happy with the rom and wanted to go back to gingerbread. I tried downgrading via recovery but had issues with the downgrade. Long story short....ignorant me, I used Odin and end it up with eclair.
Now here is where the problem started. The phone was succesfully flashed with eclair but button combo wasnt working at all. So, I rooted first and then with adb, I adb reboot download, then once in download, I flashed ginger bootloaders and thats how i end it up with the infamous phone /!\ comp. soft brick. Since originally i had no button combo working, I cant get into download mode. My comp just wont recognize the Cappy.
I have searched for hours and tried all ways possible to get into DL mode but "nada"! Even with Odin opened or heimdall, batt out, batt in, all combinations of buttons...nada (nothing), no luck. Also tried the program by Adam to unbrick the Cappy (that I've found searching) but still nada! I have windows 7 with java and that program by Adam just wont work on my comp.
Can someone try to help me on what can I do without sending my daughter's Cappy to a shop...lol?
Edit: In this post I explain what got "me" out of the softbrick after 2 days of trying! It might not work for who ever falls in a similar situation and even mayb is not a proper way of doing things, but it worked on my end!!! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26305016&postcount=23
You can use that screen as a download mode.
Remove Java. And then go download Java JRE.
Java JRE 32 bit
Java JRE 64 bit
Try going and grabbing the Heimdall KK4 1 click. Or you could try any of the Gingerbread Heimdall packages in the OneClick Master Collection
I think you'll be fine to run Heimdall after the Java reinstall.

The [Phone /!\ Computer] screen is another method of Download Mode. You should still get Odin to recognize the phone. If Odin recognizes the phone, you should flash KI2 from This thread, since it has CWM injected. Once you have CWM, you have a clean slate to install any ROM you desire.
If Odin does NOT recognize you phone no matter which USB port you connect the phone to (as it happened to me once), you could try what I did. I downloaded Windows installer for Ubuntu Desktop, and that got me Linux. Once I had Linux, flashed KB2 from the ROM thread linked above. Why Linux? Because I never got Heimdall to work on Windows, but I did on Linux. After my phone was completely stock, I followed the instructions on TRusello's Guide to Flashing ANY ROM to get my phone set up the way I wanted.
I'm sure there are faster ways than the one I just gave you, but I can vouch that my method works, and you might get your phone sorted out while you wait for a better response. Good luck!
That will teach me to edit my post without refreshing first!

I'm sure there are faster ways than the one I just gave you, but I can vouch that my method works, and you might get your phone sorted out while you wait for a better response. Good luck!

Yeeee....finally someone with a good heart and willing to share knowledge!!! And BTW, yes I tried all usb ports. The difference between your comp and mine is that I can run heimdall but like I said, way i plug the usb, my comp nor heimdall and/or Odin recognize the phone after the brick.
I'm not home at the moment but thank you from the bottom of my heart for your info. I'll get home kind of late tonight but I will follow your info to the tee and keep u post it...if u dont mind!
Thx and a kiss for you sweety!
Sent from my SGS II 4G using XDA Premium App
Heimdall and odin use different drivers, Once you install Heimdal and use your phone on a USB port, that USB port will only work with Heimdall. Odin will no longer work on that USB port, Until you uninstall the heimdall drivers

Short and sweet...i installed ubuntu last night on my pc and I thought i lost windows. Did some search and I can choose when my pc start up either W7 or ubuntu. Went to bed at 4am trying to install java to ubuntu with no luck. To b honest, i'm about to quit trying to get this phone in DL mode. My daughter hates me and my husband told me, u messed it up...u fix it! Agh!!!!! I'm trying again but if I cant get it to work I rather just buy my kid a new phone....and thats a shame because that Cappy has been a warrior!
Any other method to get DL mode??? PLEASE...SOMEONE????
Once you're at that screen, it is download mode. You could try a jig. You can build one or buy one.
Did you reinstall java on Windows 7 and then try Heimdall?

Yes I did and pc still not recognize device. Tried all ports and different usb cable...still no go!
Did device manager not recognize it or Odin/Heimdall not recognize it? I know my system wouldn't show it was connected but Odin/Heimdall still would.

Neither one recognize the device. With Odin you're supposse to see the yellow light meaning its connected...but nothing, and with heimdall clearly says disconected. I am sooo exausted looking for an answer as to what to do to get this phone on DL mode! I've used both programs in the past but the phone just dont want to come alive!
I understand how frustrating it can be to get a phone to respond.
I went back to your first post to make sure I didn't miss anything and I realized what the issue might be. Since the phone was upgraded to ICS it wouldn't be using the standard captivate drivers any more.
Let's try this:
Download and install the Android SDK
Add the Google USB Driver
Try ODIN/Heimdall again.
I think I had a similar issue when I was reverting a phone from CM7 back to Stock captivate.

I think it will work. Sorry it took so long for me to realize it. I actually had to do the same procedure within the last week but less sleep + work + cold is making me a little foggy.

Ok...thats it! That did not work either. I connected my SGS II just to see if my pc would recognize the phone, and indeed my pc picked up the device as well as my husband's Sensation. So thats it! Just called Radio Shack for a jig and the guy never heard of that...lmao! You guys should see my daughter's look at me....awh!
Anyway...I'm subscribed to this thread so if anyone has another bright idea I'll give it a shot. Thanks again!
Sorry that didn't work either. Here's another thread about connection issues to the computer. I hope this helps

Well...thank you! Don't know if i should keep DLing stuff to my pc. Now I have ubuntu, sdk manager, hemidall, dont know how many odins, etc. My husband just ask me for a new pc because he tried to uninstall ubuntu and he was unsuccesfull at it. Now this softbrick is gonna cause me some major issues family wise. This really sucks! But hey, me been a female, I just learned that nothing is impossible for us. If my hubbie dont wanna help me...I'll get it done one way or another. I will see my daughter smile....believe that!!!!!
Thank you!
I have a 2.5 year old daughter and would do anything to see her smile.
Here is a guy here on XDA who makes the jigs. However, I still believe you just have a driver issue. At this point I can only say to take off all the drivers, odin, and heimdall and start fresh.
