I am living in Canada, and all galaxy tab available in this country is P1000 which has the frequency band of HSDPA 900 / 1900 / 2100.
But I am in Mobilicity which uses AWS(1700/2100) network like T-Mobile. Therefore, I can't use galaxy tab with my provider.
Is there any possible way I can change the frequency of galaxy tab P1000 to 1700 / 2100 ???
Please~~ anybody has an idea? if it is a software issue, at least I can try~
p.s
if it is impossible, anyone knows a shopping website sells a used t-mobile galaxy tab with shipping at Canada???
I have a very similar issue. I bought a T-mobile tab in California with the promise that it would work in Mexico. What that promise was the truth it wasn't the whole truth.
Mexico's 3g system is in a frequency of 850/1900 mhz. The T-Mobile device is on 1700 mhz. I realize that frequencies are a function of physical antenna length but they can also be tuned (as a radio receiver) which is what a cell phone really is.
Is there a way to tune the receiver part to correctly function on a different frequency?
You two should trade tabs.
T-mobile uses 2100/1700 aws and cannot be changed to other data frequencies. So the best you get is EDGE.
Also, T-mobile tabs have to use both frequencies, so they don't get 3g in places that use only 2100.
At&t uses 1900/850 and cannot be changed either. There are tabs that use 1900/900.
The only quad band tab is the unlocked no carrier version.

I use an at&t tab in Mexico with a Telcel sim card and get 3g. When I used a t-mobile tab, I only got EDGE with both aTelcel and a Movistar sim card.

Thank you for your response. In my case I cheaped out and bought T-mobile due to its price and the promise of receiving an unlock code. I was ignorant of the frequency issue until now...too late.
So now another question arrises. Since these devices are basically radios, wouldn't it be possible to write a piece of software that is essentially an antena tuner? Remembering my boyhood electonics (ham studies) it seems to me that any size radio antena can be "tuned" to the correct frequency with the right equipment. Or perhaps an after market hardware that utilizes the USB input port?
Just "spitballing" here but it seems to be an idea worth some money considering all of us who want more out of our devices. Any thoughts?
Yeah, buy the device with the right hardware for your carrier.
It's a hardware limitation. No piece of software will ever be capable of fixing it on earth. The hardware is not physically capable of those frequencies.
These devices are digital. When you went to school the radio technology was analog, and you could tune anntenas, but with digital, the wave is fixed only to the built in values, so no tuning possible.
Trading is easier.
@gspajon:
I use a Telcel Amigo sim in a t-mobile tab and a month to month data plan, 3 gigs of data and unlimited voice, for $30, and I can pay the bill through a website, or at any OXXO. The Telcel EDGE is pretty fast for surfing and navigating, and sending/receiving attachments. I can live with it.
Hey ranger I have the same deal and I too am able to find the edge network. However here in Progreso, Yucatan it is painfully slow. I'm sure that is a result of my distance from the main provider signal in Mérida. I am able to access the net and surf at speeds closed to dial-up. It's frustrating considering my tab is capable of so much more.
Botom line is I thought I hade reasearched this BEFORE I bought. The frequency issue never came up untill now...AFTER I spent the money. Oh well...my wife has an iPhone that I bought her here and I can link in to her with the router capability and my tab's wifi.
Thank you for your kind assistance...where in Mexico do you travel? You are welcome to visit here anytime...my house ison the beach and the weather here is almost always lovely.

So what happens when we flash different modems? I thought that changes the supported frequencies?
Many people wish this was true, but the at&t tab has a different radio from t-mobile, and no modem can change that.

It is too bad about the tabs. I mistakenly bought a t-mobile tab too. I use it as a wifi tab most of the time.
I am a teacher in the US, but weekends and summers I am in Tijuana-Tecate building homes for poor families. We give away 250 homes a year, God willing.
My partner in Mexico grew up in the Yucatan - it is my wish to visit there some day!

Two homes student from my school built last month.
There is hope
I recently found a new device that allows me to use my tab here in mexico as is. This solution may not work for every one but it is working great for me. I recently purchased a mobile wifi router that works on Mexico's 3g system. Its the Huawei E5.
Its about the size of a small cell phone and I can connect to it using wifi. It is portable so I can just put it in my pocket and off I go. Now I didn't have to worry with unlocking the tab. I just leave the original T-Mobile chip in and use wifi here in Mexico.
I am quite certain this little device is available in Canada as well. That way you (I) can move freey between two nations without the "blah-blah" of this system vs that one and how I "should've bought" differently.
The cost was reasonable and I have stll paid less than an iPad. Not to mention I can also use my laptop here the same way as in the US. The service is very reasonable and is actually less costly than t-moble.

Because it's not a device for the U.S.
No US 3G or GPS on S730
I spoke to On The Go Solutions prior to ordering the "US released" S730 product and they stated that 1900Mz UMTS is supported by the unit and cautioned me that one must be utilizing AT&T's network to use the feature.
I ordered the unit only to find the statement is incorrect - only 2100Mz is supported; thus no US UMTS support.
On The Go Solutions has offered to take back the unit.
I note that the ambiguous "UMTS supported" statements on several US vendor web sites have been changed to unambiguous "2100Mz-only UMTS supported" statements.
Whereas there is NMEA GPS data on comm 4 (8 bit, 4800 baud), the data does not appear to contain any useful information. No actual satellite data is provided, even though I have left the unit outside, with an unobstructed view of the sky, for over an hour.

WINGS220 is the modelID for single band WINGS. Maybe the diversification is only done by software configuration (e.g. NV items). See my thread on Radio ROM dump where I explain how to dump NV items. Someone should compare them.
3g wont work in the states, even on ATT. I see mine try from time to time but it always ends up back on Edge. T mobile is rumord to be working on a 2100 band 3g network but no real word on it yet.
I would love 3g but I dont really miss it either. Edge is fast enough and I am a heavy data user, I only notice issues when its trying to reformat a website that was not made very well.
Okay this may come as a dumb question. I have T Mobile and this phone has the Bands such as 850 and 1900 so will this phone work in the states?
Negative, theres speculation in other threads that depending on the chip version in the phone it can be unlocked through software tweeks but at the moment it is just speculation so it will not work in the states.
If the American version releases you bet that will work on 3g. As of now our phones use the 50, 900, 1800, 1900 for voice communication and GPRS / EDge while using 2100 for 3g. T-Mobile has been working on deploying a 2100 band 3g network so it is possible that it might work on your phone eventually in one of their markets.
But as of now unless your in an area where they have it set up, or we figure out what the chip is and see if changing one of the settings wil enable these 3g frequencies for the states its a no go
Okay so i have done some research and from what i have read the phone will work in the states utilizing GPRS/EDGE. I have read Forums with people who live in the states and have this phone. Now the one thing is that you wont be able to use the 3G stuff which is fine by me because I currently have a Excalibur which doesnt have it anyways. I am still a lil confused because i get all this different information from people saying that you wont be able to use the phone and others that say you will. Someone help clear this up for me please !!!!
yes, you can use the phone in the US. i am using it here in San Diego, CA. You just wont get 3G data speeds, only Edge

I've had the S730 sense Dec. 07 and use with AT&T, no 3G but it works great. I'm more then pleased and I live in the Carolina's.
So I've done my best to scour the seemingly millions of posts on this site, and I've found lots of useful info. What I really need is a "ROM" or "patch" or whatever you'd call it that will get my X1i onto AT&T's 3G network. I live in the Florida Keys where we have both 3G and Edge networks. For what ever reason my phone will always get on the Edge. While in Atlanta in May I was all over their 3G in certain areas. So I know my phone will use 3G, just not where I live. Any help would greatly be appreciated.
I am looking for this fix too. Hopefully in a ROM form.
I have the X1i but my carrier (Rogers/Fido) would work 3G only if I ha the X1a, would the X1a ROM be able to fix that?
No, ROMs won't control or overcome the limitations of the the physical hardware.. if you have an X1i (900/1900/2100) it will not be able to work no matter what in areas that require the 850 Mhz band.
AT&T has some 1900 Mhz 3G areas, but it is spotty as best. Canada used to have some 1900 Mhz 3G test areas in GTA, but Rogers has switched to 850 Mhz/1900 Mhz dual bands almost completely.
You're kind of out of luck if you have an X1i in North America.

Yea, it just depends on the area. In NC, ATT 3G is deployed on 1900MHz, but in other states where ATT has 850MHz, they may deploy 3G on the 850MHz band.

this may sounds stupid.... but you can move to the area that has 3G signal... that way you will get 3G in where you live
otherwise... what lazyjai said sums it all....
I have that problem as well...
I have an X1i and I cannot get it to go into 3G for the life of me! My fiance who has ATT as well has 3G all the time (he has a simpler phone lol) not fair... every now and then itll go into 3G for a few seconds at the most, then back to EDGE.
Have you found a fix to this yet?
If you have updated to the latest and greatest @ R3....try reflashing the device to the original R1....when I flashed to R3 edge was my primary signal...has to do with what they changed in the rilphone.dll...

I have no idea what that means, Im not that technically inclined, but I'm not totally stupid. I just don't understand all the terms and such.... I can research it though! I would really like 3G, as I'm sure the thread starter if he hasnt gotten it already.
As lazyjai said, you can't get an X1i on ATT 3G in north america. It's not a software thing, its a hardware thing. The X1i does not have the parts it would need to run on 3G in america. Thats why the X1a was made with american 3G parts. X1american (X1a) vs. X1international (X1i). So, there is no way to make it run ATT 3G in america (This includes roms, cabs, etc...).
Incorrect....
◦GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900
◦UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA 900/1700/1900/2100 MHz
◦UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA 850/1700/1900/2100 MHz
X1i will work on these frequencies....so if the 3g or higher signal is available in your area it will use it...if not then you are stuck on the edge frequency...I know in Orlando/surrounding area's they are upgrading the network so it may be readily available shortly....

theres 1900+850 band inside major cities in the U.S atlanta , miami, san fran , LA , NYC , etc , you basically can use 3g in these cities but most non major cities just have 850
Guys there is NO fix for this.
AT&T has deployed their 3G network in the US on the 850MHz and 1900MHz bands. Depending on the area, both of these 3G bands, or either one maybe deployed. I have an X1a. In NC, AT&T only has a license for the 1900MHz band, for example. When I was in Baltimore, I was using the 850MHz 3G band.
The X1a support 3G frequency bands - 850MHz/1900MHz/2100MHz - ie. there is a hardware power amplifier for these three bands ONLY.
X1i - 900MHz/1900MHz/2100MHz - ie. there is a hardware power amplifier for these three bands ONLY.
Physical hardware limitation.
If your area has 850MHz 3G and you are using a X1i, you will NOT or EVER get 3G on the 850MHz band.
This has been discussed ad nauseum. If there was a fix, I'm sure the brilliant minds at XDA would have found it already.

The X2a is especially for North America...
X2a has NAM 3G bands while the X2i has EURO 3G Bands. That is the only difference.
NAM models always have a higher price, its always been that way.

Could you please let me know exactly what site is? I will probably buy the X2/X2a in the next month and am looking for the X2a but don't know where to find. Although this price difference may be an important consideration.
Thanks
if it's like the x1i vs. x1a then the difference in performance is that 30fps video capture is disabled in x1a because of a patent issue between qualcomm and broadcomm and yes it's a hardware issue that can't be fixed by roms or software
but so is the i models not being able to use the USA 3g bands
yes the only difference i notice too is the 850 umts instead of 900 umts band on the NAM edition, pricing wise you might wanna check bestbuy.com because in the states, bestbuy and sonystyle.com actually had the x1 for sale back then for 799.99 I would believe the same will apply to the X2. I am not too sure about the united states market as to i live in Toronto Canada, but the company i work for Rogers wireless will not be getting the X2 yet or at least anytime soon that i know of, instead we will be releasing the X10 sometime in Q2 expecting a mid March release.
Back to the difference in the umts band, i know some carriers in the us has the 1900 umts in certain cities. I know that major cities like NYC will have support for 1900 umts bandwidth, therefore an x2i will be able to connect onto 3g there. If anyone is planning to get the x2i and is planning to use it in Toronto or Vancouver, most carries like Bell, Rogers, Telus will support the 1900 umts band, and the speed and coverage is not bad unless you are in the basement or somewhere surrounded by multiple walls.

no as I said the band limitations are in the cpu of the device

Not CPU, but the power amplifiers. In the X2i, only the 900/1900/2100MHz UMTS bands are amplified. In the X2a, only the 850/1900/2100MHz UMTS bands are amplified. It's still a hardware problem.

Less people will be buying the Xperia from the U.S. That's why.
I talked to a Sony rep and he said that the frequencies will not be different between the x2 and x2a...I was planning on buying a x2 from a guy on another forum but now this thread has me a little nervous...so does anybody have any official evidence that there will be different frequencies?

You mean like CPU frequencies? Or radio (3G/UMTS) frequencies?
CPU...no difference between the two
UMTS...yes
He told me radio...go to their live chat and ask them...

He's wrong... If you want confirmation just google the specs on both phones. "Customer service representatives... leading people astray since the begining of time"
So, according to HTC.com and Phonescoop.com, the radio for the Sprint version will have 1900mhz LTE, just as with the HTC Evo 4G LTE. Sprint is supposedly rolling out 800mhz LTE (former Nextel iDen) in the 2nd half of 2013. Question is, can the radio be modified via software to have 800mhz LTE, or is this a hardware issue?
Anyone know?
Thanks!

What a mess most of their customers will have, IMO stupid decision. Most people to use this network will need to replace their phones, and it means for you, that you have a decision to make on your LTE future, one which phone you buy or change provider, second option probably the best.
Please note that the Snapdragon 600 chipset does not have any modem support on chip, therefore additional hardware radios are added per requirement. HTC should have gone for the Snapdragon 800 which has a modem that supports LTE as well.
And in short, no you can't just change, it is hardware. However, towards the end of the year hopefully all phones will start to use the Qualcomm chipset announced yesterday which covers all bands worldwide.
HSPA/WCDMA:
Europe/Asia: 850/900/1900/2100 MHz
GSM/GPRS/EDGE:
850/900/1800/1900 MHz
LTE:
EU: 800/1800/2600 MHz
US (AT&T): 700/850/AWS/1900 MHz
US (TMO): 700/AWS MHz
US (Sprint): 1900 MHz
Asia: 1800/2600 Mhz
Re: Sprint iDen 800mhz -> Sprint CDMA/LTE 800mhz and the One
Ok thanks for the clarification that's what I was thinking. Perhaps Sprint will go ahead and pre-load the LTE radio for the former iDen 850 spectrum, and activate it with a firmware update. That's all I can hope for I guess.

Very interesting. Not sure what is going on, also not sure if HTC has any clue what is going on. There website is obviously wrong or not up to date. Still doesn't list 800MHz in US.
Looks like the One will only have Sprint band 25 LTE (1900). At least from the FCC figures.

SVDO is also missing, so no simultaneous 3G and voice. Understandably, though, with the LTE network increase.
Have gone from S1 to S2 with sprint, might go with HTC One instead of S4.
Does only one band of LTE on the phone mean there could be some towers that use the band not included in the phone, so I would only get 3g?

Do you have problems with Sprint now? are you using LTE currently?
Your LTE coverage will only be as good as how many 1900Mhz towers Sprint has around. If sprint doesn't have a tower in your phones range for LTE then you will only get 3G
If you travel a lot with roaming, then you will most likely want the AT&T model which covers most of greater America. If you get LTE while roaming will depend on Sprint and other Carriers agreements, otherwise yes your option will be 3G.
Thanks, I wasn't sure if their towers would have both bands or just 1, I wasn't sure why the phone only having 1900Mhz would matter.
I don't have an LTE phone, but I do have wimax coverage in Daytona, LTE is supposedly on the way. My work forces me to travel a lot, don't get to use 4g much anyway, I'm heavily dependent on roamcontrol, with a hacked PRL I make due with us cellular's 3g usually. When I am in Houston/Daytona I would like my LTE phone to have proper coverage though ;P

LTE coverage is great throughout Houston. It gets weak and sometimes drops to 3G when in buildings though.

Yes you are thinking correctly, however Sprint's 1900mhz is pretty comprehensive, in fact, I believe Sprint has more 1900mhz spectrum than any other carrier (hence why Sprint used to be 'Sprint PCS', referencing the PCS 1900mhz band), and far more 1900mhz spectrum than the old iDen 800mhz. You should not have any problems whatsoever.
Ill just be glad when they roll out 800mhz 3g..which this phone does have suport for. If they finally get around to upgrading the 3g here in Houston then I wont mind as much when the connection drops down. As such, the way it is right now, 3g is nigh on unusable, and sometimes so is 4g.

It has nothing to do with the modem. The One has a separate Qualcomm MDM9x15 modem which is not that much different than the modem that's integrated into the Snapdragon 800. It has plenty of ports which could handle another LTE band if one could be "fed" to it.
The issue is the front end RF stuff. Due to the uniqueness of the 800MHz LTE band that will be used by Sprint, it's difficult at this point to source the necessary antenna switches and transceivers and other front end RF components that will handle that specific 800Mhz LTE band.
My guess is that you won't see any ESMR800 LTE phones come out before Q3 or Q4 and it's also probably at least six months at this point before Sprint starts to deploy the technology commercially.

They are not going to roll-out EVDO on 800 MHz, only voice/1x, and a 5x5 LTE carrier.
That is not what I have heard from multiple Sprint reps about EVDO on the 800mhz. I was told, very recently in fact, that the voice/EVDO would be rolled out to the 800mhz, well before any LTE bands were activated in that spectrum. That Sprint was pushing for better penetration for voice and EVDO signals through the 800mhz spread, and that LTE would be focused on the 1900mhz for the time being.

According to this article:
http://www.lightreading.com/sprint/sprint-to-dial-800-for-lte-in-q4/240153521
"We expect to deploy LTE on 800MHz in the fourth quarter," said Steve Elfman, president of network operations and wholesale at Sprint on the call.
Nonetheless, Sprint is clearing the way for LTE integration with WiMax partner Clearwire. Hesse said he expects Clearwire's fast 4G service to start arriving late in the third quarter with "TD-LTE, multi-band devices."
With so many different chunks of frequency to support, Sprint will need these devices to switch between 2.5GHz, 800MHz and 1900MHz to get around the network.

That's not that unusual and really not that big of a deal for the the radios to handle in the upcoming devices.
In any case, working with multiple bands is fairly commonplace. Look at Verizon and AT&T for example which operate four different bands.
Wow
This has to be the most technical thread I have ever read Where do you folks obtain all this knowledge?
Hey,
just received my european snapdragon 910F and it instantly updated itself to a ANJ4.
i'm a happy user of a Galaxy S3 LTE that really brought me 4g everywhere.
well, now i use both i9305 and 910F, and there's a major issue with reception.
in the bedroom, which is inside of a concrete building, S3 LTE shows 4G 1800 at -106...-110db (*#0011#).
Sometimes even -115db y no pasa nada - it holds on to the frequency and provides stable 4g.
Not blazing fast, but at least 8mbit DL, allowing for acceptable browsing and apps usage.
Note 4 goes straight to the 3G 900 with miserable 1mbit DL, 0.02 UL (forget VoIP), increased ping... it's a pain!
luckily, i have a multisim, so both phones work on the same network with the same plan and at the same time, so the problem is evident.
when i bought S3 LTE, it showed significantly lower signal (difference of 10-15db) than my Motorola o Sony phones, but Note 4 takes it to the whole new level.
anyone tried modems from other regions? p.s. you can update a modem via odin without affecting knox byte, right?
I don't see the modems thread started yet.
for S3 LTE, modems from France, Germany, Norway and Russia (Megafon XXUFNI3) showed best results. I use the latter.
HELP!!!

Interestingly my Note 4 gets 4G reception where the Note 3 does not! I had both side by side in a marginal 4G signal area, on 1800MHz (Three), and the Note 3 refused to stay on 4G even if I tried to choose the network manually...it would go to 4G for 30 seconds and jump back to 3G. But on the Note 4 it holds the 4G signal!
So my experience suggests the opposite of yours....I then checked the dB level on 3G (as I can't get the Note 3 to stay on 4G) and they were both pretty much identical, which may simply suggest that the Note 4 has a different algorithm for network switching.

what region are you, and what is your current modem?
i'm FVF España (or XXU), with XXU1ANJ4 (modem is CP from *#1234#, right?)
forgot to mention that i also have Galaxy Tab S 8.4 T705 tablet (which is, in fact, a supersized Galaxy S5), and it sticks to 4G in the same room too. I didn't have the opportunity to try Note 3, so can't compare. but googling "poor galaxy note reception" shows so many horror stories it's just mind blowing.
so i'm willing to try a different modem.
what is worse, at least with S3 LTE i could lock it to 4G only via Band Mode (@ service menu), but on recent samsung devices that is no longer possible

I am in the UK, with U1ANJ4 modem as well! So this is a bit surprising that you have this difference. I don't think any of the Note phones have had the "best" signal reception to be honest. I have a really old Nokia Symbian phone (you remember the ones where the screen and keypad slide up and down?) with 3G...and it can get 3G reception where my S3, Note 3 and Note 4 cannot get anything.

When it is actually on 4G 1800 in the same room, it shows 8 to 20Mbit DL and 3 UL with no problem.
i'll keep watching it to see if it is a temporary network issue, as they've been rolling out carrier aggregation here and i don't see it working yet, and VoLTE is still to be enabled.
Hopefullly LTE800 will ease the pain, but we will (maybe) have it here starting january.

+1000.
it smells sort of planned obsolescence but in a way that there should not be a perfect phone because otherwise all other phones will not be purchased.
My 4g and 4g+ speeds in london are amazing! I've just got 95mb down on 4g+. In ee with a uk 910
Okay, good news:
Thatks to the super useful post describing how to enter the Service Mode and Band Info , i've managed to lock my N910F to LTE-only.
for this, i had to manually disable each and every 2G and 3G frequency.
apparently there's now no easy way to select just a group of band modes, or cancel it easily. have to turn on/off over 10 frequencies.
well, better than nothing!
when N910F fell into 3G again, i locked it to LTE only - y voila - no problem at all. works great as S3 LTE did.
websites load fast; speedtest shows avg. 10DL/3UL with -112...-117dB.
the downside is that voice calls do not work as network doesn't have VoLTE yet.
So it's definetely not an antenna issue, but
either 1) modem settings which is too cautious and has a different threshold to fall to 3G to guarantee voice availability;
or 2) network sees more dropped packets and says to go to 3G.
I have also noticed that if i position the phone in landscape mode AND hold it with hands, this affects reception.
for example, doing it during speedtest in that room with poor signal, decreases download speed from 10Mbit to 3Mbit.
these are all frequences that were enabled by default:
anyone knows what RF support mode is?
