[Q] Flashing kernel -bootmagic check fail- - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been trying for the past few days to get pershoot's newest kernel on my Dream to no avail. My ultimate goal is to get froyobylazlo ROM up and running on my aging phone.
Right now I'm trying to flash the zip using fastboot but I get the message:
sending 'recovery' (136 kb)... OKAY
writing 'recovery'... FAILED (remote: image error(BootMagic check fail))
I think it may have something to do with where I'm flashing it to. Any help would be appreciated.

What do you mean by "flash the zip using fastboot", what command you are using to flash the recovery.......

fastboot flash recovery kernelb.zip

I believe kernels are flashed from recovery instead of fastboot. Recovery is recovery, not kernel.

The command which youhave used is for flashing recovery from fastboot, it needs an img file. If you are flashing an kernel then you need to go into recovery by pressing home and power button while booting.
Which recovery you have and which rom you are using....?

I believe it's RA-dream-v1.7.0
I have been using Biffmod Leaving on a Jet Plane.
When I flash it from recovery I get:
=======================
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
verifying update package...
E:No signature (7 files)
E:Verification failed
=======================
And then it brings me back to the main menu.

Aman RA does not allow to flash the unsigned file, check the zip you downloaded is good, or use a signing tool to sign that zip

So it should work if I change my recovery?

U need to upgrade your radio/spl per ezterry's 14 MB ram hack page. Keep your recovery. Just fastboot flash radio spl follow all instructions then flash rom
Edit: follow instructions in lazslo rom page too. Need an ext4 partition

Don't I have the newest radio? I'll go searching around just to make sure.
I tried reflashing both items in the dream_2708kit but my phone is still stuck in a boot loop. Is the hboot-1.33.0013d.img file the SPL?

That rom works with .25 radio. There is a flashable zip on ezterrys thread to update. Need to fastboot flash the 13d spl as well so might as well just follow all his instructions then the instructions on the rom op

Do I flash the entire zip or just the img file contained within?
Flashed successfully. Still stuck in a bootloop. This is so frustrating. orz I'm not far from just going to another ROM.
I wiped nearly everything and reformatted my ext4 partition.

What zip did u flash? The radio zip or the dream kit zip. Dream kit u have to unzip. Inside u will find radio and spl. Put those in sdk tools folder then run fastboot commands in his op to get new radio/spl. Radio zip just flash.

I don't know man. It just won't boot. I wonder what the problem is.

Do u have fastboot set up in sdk? If so boot into fastboot, plug it in the comp, open cmd prompt, change directories to androidsdk/tools (assuming that's where fastboot file is), type fastboot devices, hit enter. Should get a serial number. If so, type:
Fastboot erase system -w (enter)
Fastboot erase boot (enter)
Then power down phone. Boot into recovery and reflash rom and don't forget the other file in the op as well. Should be right under rom link. Then reboot.

[Q] Flashing the latest and brightest

Hello guys,
I've bought my G1 a couple years back, it's still a functioning machine (although becoming a bit of a heavyweight in the smartphone-division), but I want it to do a little more than what it's capable of now. In other words: I want to update to a newer android version.
I'm still running a rooted cupcake.
In order to update to the latest ROMs, I need a new radio and SPL.
Problem is: I can't seem to flash them through fastboot.
This is the error I keep bumping into:
c:\androidsdk\tools>fastboot flash radio radio-2.22.27.08.img
sending 'radio' (21120 KB)... OKAY [ 6.333s]

I had a lot of trouble trying to flash a custom recovery as well, but was finally able to pull that one off (installed the recovery app, flashed cyagonmod custom recovery and from inside that one I was able to flash RA's 1.7 custom recovery).
So now I'm running RA's custom recovery. I've been pulling my hair over this signing problem for two days now, the few threads I seem to find about it on this forum don't bring me any further either...
My question is: how do I flash my new radio? Can I flash them from recovery?
Many thanks in advance!
The Radio I'm trying to flash is:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=831139
I had this issue as well.
My fix was re-rooting (hence both of our phones were S=ON and not S=OFF), installing the Engineering SPL, then following the fastboot commands given in the 2708 kernel installation guide you linked us to.
I believe that was my issue, but I did do the whole process of reverting back to the RC29 version, then doing the normal process of rooting and installing the recovery screen, bootloader, etc.
I believe that'll fix it, and if not, just say so and we'll figure it out!
Just to make sure everything is going on correctly,
Root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442480
SPL: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=455860
Thank you, that was a very useful suggestion!
I flashed HardSPL through recovery and then tried fastboot flashing the radio and hboot again.
This time I bumped into the following error:
c:\androidsdk\tools>fastboot flash radio radio-2.22.27.08.img
sending 'radio' (21120 KB)... OKAY [ 7.954s]
writing 'radio'... FAILED (remote: partition does not exist)

Does this mean I need to format my SD card through recovery first?
Sorry for the few day delay, been busy.
I don't think that you need to wipe your SD card.
The HardSPL is 10.95.3000. You must first flash the the 1.33.2003 SPL.
Make sure it is the 2003 and not 2005, because I do not think that the 2005 is compatible.
Here,
Download this
http://www.mediafire.com/?jmt4nnzttnm
hboot: 1.33.2003 - SPL both in update.zip and img format
hboot: 1.33.2005 - in img format
radio: 2_22_23_02 in img format
1. I'd recommend that you flash back down to RC29 (just to be sure everything is done correctly),
2. Throw all the files included in the g1boot.zip onto your sdcard.
3. Root as you normally would, but use Amon Ra 1.7.0 in stead 1.5.2.
http://files.androidspin.com/downlo...OVERY/&file=recovery-RA-dream-v1.7.0-cyan.img
4. Flash the spl_1_33_2003.zip from the recovery screen.
5. After that is complete, your phone will reboot.
6. Then you want to fastboot flash radio radio-2_22_23_02.img.
7. If that works, which it should if everything was done properly, you will fastboot flash hboot hboot-1_33_2005.img.
8. If everything goes as planned, you should be safe to flash your ROM now.
And just for the record, I believe I actually did mine of the Engineering SPL. If those steps don't work, I'd recommend trying that instead.
Keep me posted on how it works.
This worked like a charm! Thanks for all the help. I'm now on the radio, hboot & ROM I wanted to be
I tried doing the engineering SPL first. That didn't work. Then I went for the 2003 version, through that I was able to fastboot flash the radio and hboot. Then in recovery I first partioned my SD card and then flashed the Biffmod 2.1 ROM.
Testing it out right now Really slow first boot though, not sure if this will be fast enough.
First boots always take a while.
Hows it working for you?

phone stats:
Rom:[2.2.2 AOSP] DREAMteam Froyo v1.9.2
recovery: AmonRA 1.7.0
hboot 1.33.0013d
radio 2.22.28.25
You'll need to restore the phone with the orange nbh, then reflash recovery, spl, and radio.
Download this: https://rs766tl2.rapidshare.com/files/422717980/orange-1.58.73.2.nbh
Then flash it through fastboot with "fastboot flash nbh orange-1.58.73.2.nbh"
make sure you don't interrupt it
Reboot into fastboot and reflash recovery, radio, and spl following instructions in here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=831139
That thread also has instructions for fixing things if you find yourself without recovery
It's what I just posted. Flash orange nbh and reflash the stuff.
if you still have hboot there is no worries, at least no brick
you cant flash anything with the spl you have but as frankdrey just stated you can flash a .nbh through hboot!
just like the old dreaming.nbh that you more than likely used to root your phone, simply load it onto sd card then turn on phone while holding camera, say yes to update, wait ~5min and bam you have an engineering spl ready to flash amon_ra and pop in a new rom, and when your done go back to the latest radio\spl.
and if you wait a bit you may be able to flash the 1.33.0014d spl - not sure how much better this will be as a whole, but it sounds as if you would get the perks of the 1.33.0013d spl and as an added bonus be able to fastboot flash so no need for the orange.nbh any more... well maybe, soon we should know, going to try it now!
actually fastboot erase system -w already did the trick. thanks a lot for your answers
Unable to use recovery.
This sounds similar to my current difficulty. I have a stock, (supposedly) unlocked? ? Htc G1 with 1.0 firmware RC29.. Can't seem to load anything! Loaded FlashRecs 1.2, 1.4 or Amon Ra's 1.7, and it seems I cannot utilize them. Rooting guied with Dreaming.nbh changes nothing..

flashing the g1 to new rom

I got a old g1 today it looks like it may need a new battery will have to get one before I flash.
It has CM 5 on it. It looks like before I flash any new roms I may need to update the hboot or radio ?
hboot
1.33.2005
cpld-4
radio
2.22.23.02
that's what there at now thanks. All the roms I looked at dont support 1.33.205 or am I wrong I would like to go to cm 7 what do I need to do?
All ways safe to double check before I start flashing thanks much
i flashed recovery 2.5.07
I tryed a rom that side it would support my hboot
it just got stuck at g1 screen did not make it to spash used recovery to flash back to cm 5 any suggestions
id suggest using amonra's recovery for the g1, in my opinion its the best to date. also consider upgrading your radio/spl. the extra 14mb of ram is huge for the g1 and most new roms require it. all the info to do this can be found in the forum, but if you need further help feel free to ask.

Ok i figured I just use fastboot? I have a little fear of bricking it. Can you link a good guide flashing radio and hboot I have seen 3 or 4
well im in the process of writing a fastboot guide for the vision in another forumHERE although it is not finished.
the commands are the same just dont use the links to get the recovery, radio etc from that thread :good:
get the recovery image from amonra
and follow my 4ext recovery instructions
next will be flashing the radio and spl
this is a .zip and and you will need to extract the images
once you have everything ready to roar here are the fastboot commands:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery-RA-dream-v1.7.0-cyan.img
fastboot flash radio radio-2.22.27.08.img
fastboot flash hboot hboot-1.33.0013d.img
fastboot reboot-bootloader
you can just copy and paste each line one after another in cmd
and for more info go HERE
good luck, between my guide and ezterys you should have more than enough info, of course feel free to ask more questions

thanks much dont need a guild as I have fastboot set up all ready in a dir just looking for files to flash the links and guids were very old dating from 2009-2011 I was lost thanks much
great, then all the files needed are in my last post. just be sure to flash in that order as the .13d spl is not compatible with your current radio, and as a heads up once you change to this hboot you will no longer be able to use most fastboot commands as this is a hacked bootloader and isn't perfect in that sense. erasing partitions will still work just fine though

HTC G1 Soft Brick can access bootloader screen

Hey guys I attempted to breathe some life into my old HTC G1 and after failed attempts I was successful in installing the CM6 but this runs Froyo and I couldn't get certain apps to work, more recent apps just would not install so being new to Android I tried installing the CM7 unofficial but that failed giving me a STATUS 7 so I assumed I needed another kernel so I tried doing that but still STATUS 7 so I installed spl saphire signed and then that went through but phone got soft bricked so now I know I can unbrick my device because I can still access FASTBOOT and I can flash a recovery image and I tried that but also my home button gives trouble so I have to fiddle with it to get it to work and that's the only way I know how to get into recovery. Change to 2708 radio
Change to .13d bootloader

Status 7 can mean a few different thing, but for the most part its incompatibility. If you follow the above you will meet all requirements for the "newer" roms

If you want you can unbrick your devices by downgrading it to android 1.0 then apply the official update for the G1 from Google. It will bring you back to the stock HTC G1 1.6 but you can repeat the rooting procedure. That's what I'm doing before, specially if I flashed faulty roms or messing up with the radio and spl combos. Hope that help you.

sending 'boot' (1604 KB)... OKAY
writing 'boot'... OKAY
C:\bin>fastboot flash system system.img
sending 'system' (54823 KB)... OKAY
writing 'system'... OKAY
C:\bin>fastboot flash userdata userdata.img
sending 'userdata' (2 KB)... OKAY
writing 'userdata'... OKAY
C:\bin>fastboot reboot
rebooting...
Then I got G1 back!
I hope it can help somebody.
Cheers!
So I got the phone to work and it retained the same bootloader and I got recovery back but now I'm trying to install a stable Gingerbread like EzGingerbread and I still get status 7

I have the same problem you had. please describe how did you>>>>> flash_image recovery /sdcard/cm-recovery-1.2.img
This would be putting a recovery on root of SD card and naming it cm-recovery-1.2.img
Then booting into the os and running the command in a terminal emulator, that's it
This will only work if your ROM supports the flash_image binary but more than likely yours does.
If you need further help, please explain your problem fully and give all info about your phone

Boot Looped Incredible S... Last Try

Hey guys,
Last year I rooted my Incredible S and installed one of the CyanogenMods. Everything seemed to work fine until this spring when it started bootlooping on me. At first I could bootup and after running my phone for a few hours it would start looping. So I got a new battery which I thought would solve the problem, it didn't. Now I can't even boot up anymore without hitting the loop. I can only enter HBOOT.
I've tried following a few guides but I can't get anything going. Buying a new phone Friday but before thought I might as well post here. Any help?

I can enter fastboot but recovery and factory reset start a loop.
Thanks guys!
What recovery do you use?
Can you enter it?
If yes.. Just download one of your fav's roms, but it in your SD-Card, Wipe Everything, and Flash the rom (&GApps if AOSP) and reboot..
If No, Connect your Phone To PC and fastboot flash recovery recovery.img"
Let me know if worked
Download and install a recovery, i recommend 4ext
See if u can enter it then...
I must tell ya, never give up, i remember myself forgetting to flash boot.img and having my dad almost killing me ^^
Thanks for the responses!
@Mohamed Ab M I cannot enter recovery off of hboot. I can flashboot and I tried to flash "recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-inc.img" but nothing improved. Is there something else I can try?
@oziboy Do you have a link for 4ext? I see the website but it looks like an app? Also, how do I wipe everything if fastboot is my only option right now?
Haven't given up yet but I only have until Friday!
Edit: Is there any chance this might have something to do with the radio?
ok tried two different things. Downloaded the recovery.img of 4ext from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1377751 and fastboot flashed it. Nothing changed.
So I tried flashing a different radio... still no go.
Not sure what else I can try?
Well.. I can think of one thing :|
Try doing these commands in fastboot:
fastboot erase system
fastboot erase data
fastboot erase cache
Maybe something is wrong in system.. I don't know
Btw dose it say "success" when you flash a recovery? Or it fails?
And if It didn't work... Try running an RUU :| and you will lose everything:|

I don't mind losing everything, already backed up contacts and messages when I could still access the OS.
Can you recommend a good RUU to try? What is an RUU? Thanks for the help!
Then for a ruu go here http://androidruu.com/getdownload.p...33U_3831.18.00.11_M_release_266013_signed.exe
This should be the ruu that you need assuming your phone is a WWE, if you phone isnt WWE then use this to see what version is for you, make sure u only use vivo and not vivow
If the link to installation in beginning didnt work, that link was a link to the old thread of the RUU'S but anyway i posted the links for ya
Now all you gotta do is download the ruu , get ur phone to fastboot and do fastboot oem lock and then run the ruu on your computer and then go here for the rest http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1359555
Got into fastboot and entered "fastboot oem lock" but kept getting an error, command error or something.
Downloaded 4 different ruus and got the "rom.zip" file and renamed it to "update.zip" and tried "fastboot update update.zip" on all of them.... no luck. Something about wrong signature or something.
Thanks for everyone's help but I don't see anyway out here!

And u tried to run the ruu.exe without extracting the rom?
It saved my incredible s and my one x+
And to flash a rom.zip u need fastboot flash all rom.zip i think
This is actually doing something! I didn't realize I could run the RUU when plugged into fastboot. Fingers crossed here....
I got two working but both still resulted in a bootloop. Which convinces me the problem must be hardware or something. Oh well, it was a good device in its day.
Thank you for all your help!
Bootlooping is not a hardware failure..
Can you flash a recovery now? And use it?
Erm, now try extracting rom.zip and fastboot erase all and fastboot flash all rom.zip
Then id it does t work, flash the stock recovery from somewhere, only then you can use update.zip, this just came to my mind
If after flashing stock recovery try fastboot oem lock again and then go run the ruu.exe again
If it doesnt work then, then you gotta fastboot flash boot.img manually, this file is located in the rom.zip
If that doesnt work, try update.zip again with stock recovery
Must tell ya, its not hardware
You gotta give up only when your mobo is fried, and thats what i did on my htc one x+...
In the previous step I got S-ON set back on, does that change anything? Because now it seems that fastboot erase all doesn't work
erasing 'all'...
FAILED <remote: not allowed>
Trying the other steps you gave...
edit: I extracted a recovery_signed.zip file from the rom.zip file and tried to flash it using flashboot. Getting a signature error, though I know it is the correct RUU I am getting it from.
FAILED <remote: signature verify fail>
Try fastboot oem lock again, im 100 percent sure thats the command to lock it, i had almost the same issues when i failed my first try at rooting xD
Aight have you tried fastboot flash all rom.zip?
And then manually flash boot.img from the rom.zip?
None of those are working, getting errors on all them.
My HBOOT is not reading this, does this change anything?

Hboot is successfully downgraded, now follow this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2118187
From step 9
I can't follow that guide because I can't get into the android os to turn on usb debugging. My problem is still the boot loop.
