Is there any way to get my Captivate to stick to 850 band only, and not switch to 1900. I live in an area where I have 3G coverage on both bands.
Edit: I can get to this using SGS tools, but that would be only till a restart. Any way to get this to stick permanently until disabled.
Go to the phone dialer and put in *#2263# from there you can select what band you want. To check if it took, type *#0011#
Yes.. what he posted above should work even after reboot
The moment I set to 850 its switching from 3g to edge. Strange. Cos when on 3g mode its always been on 850, atleast 80% of times

Thats one thing the bugged me is that this phone ... AT&T version anyways.... loves to camp on 1900mhz more and would be fine if it would switch to 850 when needed..... alot of time I would be at -111db and still on 1900 when 850 in the same are would be at -103db.
I enable 850 that way but once you reboot... you need to do it again.....

Technically, the lower band should have lower signal strength reducing radiation. Plus should be using less battery power. That is why I am seeing how to get to 850.
Anyways, I think I'll leave it how it is.

I hope someone can help me or at least point me in the right direction.
Im in the Philippines and my g1 is unlocked/rooted with the latest cyanogen rom 4.2.6.
The network im connecting to is smart communications with according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_network_code has:
515 03 Smart Gold Smart Communications Inc Operational GSM 900 / 1800; UMTS 850 / 2100
our phones have Modes GSM 850 / GSM 900 / GSM 1800 / GSM 1900
WCDMA 1700 / WCDMA 2100
So i should be getting a 3g signal or something but im not, my phone is not even making an attempt to connect to 3g. I have checked the settings and i cant find where to enable 3g. Use only 2g network is not checked. my apn settings seems to be correct but its not even getting to the point where it tries to connect to 3g. I have no 3g symble or edge symbol. please help..
help someone pls
I have a very weak reception, ranging from from -90db down to -105db, inside my condo with my Bell i9000m leading to calls drop.
Dialing *#0011# on the dial pad and walking around the place, I noticed the phone kept switching between the 1900 and 850 bands back and forth.
I kinda suspect the calls drop happen when the phone switches from one band to the other, so I'm wonderring: is there's a way I could set the phone so that it only uses the 850 band when I'm home?
Since the 850 is better at penetrating walls, wouldn't that help a little?
On older phones, non-smart ones, there usually was such a parameter to do that.

I had exactly the same problem plus my phone would turn off as well when it lost its signal for prolonged periods of time. I found a post on this forum which gave a keypad code to type in.My phone has worked perfectly since then. Unfortunately I can't find the post to link it to you. I'm sure if you search for a while you could find it.
Hope this helps a little.
In the dialer: *#*#197328640#*#*
1. Debug 2. Phone control 3. Network control 4. Band selection. (not the menu#'s)
I tried WCDMA all and was getting the shut off when phone loses signal when asleep. Just set it back to auto but might try setting it to 850 and see what happens. This doesn't happen too often, I get full bars at home and 2-3 bars at work but do lose signal sometimes.
Hope this helps and let us know how it works for you.

Apparently the problem was the 850MHz band
Forced my cell to use the WCDMA 1900MHz band instead and tadam... no more calls drop.
By the way, there a shortcut to get to the band selection dialog: *#*#2263# or *#*#BAND# if you prefer.
Got an used Captivate on eBay, came with kernel 2.6.35.13 Glitch v13.1, MIUI 2.2.17, Android 2.3.7 and modem UGJK4
Well, Captivate radio specs for 3G: HSDPA 850 / 1900 / 2100
My operator (TIM) uses 2100 in my city, excellent until now!
But, I'm stuck in EDGE, can't get it to connect any faster. We have other phones here got from England, Ireland and USA, all of them support 2100 and 3G works perfectly, but not this Captivate.
Already tried the following modems: UGKG3, XXJTV, XXJVU and currently on UGJL2.
Just after installing the UGJL2, it connected at HSDPA, but after 5 seconds changed to Edge and no (H) anymore
A weird thing, I tried another operator chip (VIVO), that also operates at 2100 in my area and HSDPA is enabled normally!
Got back my chip and back to EDGE, this same chip get 3G+ (HSDPA) on a Samsung Jet, Samsung Galaxy Mini and a Samsung i550.
Everything else works perfectly, calls, GPS, wifi...
Any tips?
Thanks!

From what I know, the Captivate only gets 3G on AT&T even when unlocked. I might be wrong, but I remember reading that somewhere.
Must be a myth, I use my captivate on 850mhz in Australia 3g and hspa work perfect.
Did you try to force 2100 with service mode?
Phoned in.....
But with the other operator chip 3G works normally, at the same place where my chip also get 3G on other phone. Both are 3G+ (Hsdpa) able, but not when together. That is what makes no sense.
I would have forced in servide mode, but all the codes for service mode does not seem to work, and I've seen around the forums that MIUI don't have it...
Is there any code besides *#0011# and *#*#197328640#*#* ?
Both not work here
Thanks for the help!
MIUI and AOSP do not allow for the forcing of certain bands. You can specify what region you are in, but that's about all. To do that, use dialer code
*#*#4636#*#*
Phone setting
Menu/select service bands
That's about as good as it gets.
Hope it helps.

Your carrier uses the same 3g bands that att does. Those are the only ones that use the same 3g bands

Yes, I've tried Automatic and Euro (same bands used here), still Edge.
The strange thing is it get 3G from the other operator, that uses the same 2100 frequency... (at leaset they say it's both 2100)
Any way to see the frequency currently in use?

My carrier uses 850 and 2100.
My wife has a captivate also, her carrier uses 900 and 2100. Of course only the 2100 works but it is solid.

Ok, I discovered that it's an area problem probably, I tried at the office and got the H on the indicator! HSPDA is working, sometimes 'came down' to 3G (concrete building, not so good signal).
That's still strange because my friend get Hspa here, with a Galaxy S (I9000b), same operator, will call them soon to ask about this.
Anyway, it works! with ridiculous speed (180kbps), but it's better then Edge at 15kbps...
Thanks everybody for the help!
[Q] ATT GTab on Tmobile Network - 3G Possible? (CM10, JPZ Modem & 1900 re-farm area)
So I have the ATT version of the Galaxy Tab. I have CM10 on it and it's running great. When I initially purchased it, I planned on just using it as a Wifi tablet, no Cell Data primarily since I had CDMA service (Sprint). Recently I switched over to Tmobile and would like to use data from my Tmobile plan.
I SIM unlocked my Tab following Roto's guide
I can make phone calls and send text messages
I get Edge service now
However, I could care less for Voice/Text service, all I want to do is use 3G/HSPA.
I also realize that Tmo's 3G band is different than ATT's, however the 1900 Mhz refarming is already happening in my area (Central Florida). I cannot however tell if my specific local area has coverage (is there an app I can run on my Note2 or GS3 to tell what bands it has access to?).
I am wondering if I can just flash a Tmobile modem and get data working on 3G/HSPA. I don't really think it's that simple, but any feedback would be great!
FWIW, I was on the JPZ modem before I started.
Well, I went ahead and flashed the Tmobile modem, got 0 service, then tried the ATT modem, got 0 service, then flashed back to the JPZ Modem... also didn't work.
Going to try to ODIN...
Well, apparently when I was jacking around with different modems something went haywire and it deleted my stuff from /efs, and the modems were never actually put into /radio. I restored my /efs backup (thank goodness for roto's suggestion to keep 11.5 years ), carrier unlocked again, then pushed the T-mobile modem to the radio folder. Thankfully I found the "Secret Codes" thread and when I went to check my IMEI it was blank, which then clued me to start looking in the /efs folder and then /radio.
Rebooted and I'm back to Edge service... and a noticeably lower number of reception bars. With the JPZ modem I saw 4/4 bars with Edge service while the Tmo modem changes between 0 & 1 bars.
I performed the *#*#2263#*#* (RF Band Selection) secret code and made sure only 850 Mhz GSM and 1900 WCDMA were enabled (since from what I understand that's the frequencies ATT had put into the Tab) and disabled the 1700 & 2100 WCDMA bands since the hardware isn't there.
/Thinking my area might not have 1900 refarming yet, I'm going to take it to work with me tomorrow and see if I see anything different.
Well, clearly switching modems is a bad idea. I tried the Tmo modem, both with specific bands selected and "all." Saw only 1 bar total, and only Edge service- not better than the JPZ modem. I switched to the ATT modem, selecting "all" bands, nothing at all. I finally switched back to the JPZ modem and bam, 4/4 bars- but still only Edge service.
Either the 1900 re-farm hasn't happened in the areas I'm testing, or I can't make this work...

OK, I found the following dialer code:
*#*#197328640#*#*
Going to the Debug Screen -> Basic Info it shows the BAND which is GSM1900!
Now, how in the heck can I get this thing to connect to 3G???
Unless T-Mobile switches their umts/hspa to 850Mhz ( like your at&t) or 2100Mhz, I dont think you can get 3G using non T-Mobile tab.
The 1900 should be only the gsm part.

Thanks for the response. I guess I was assuming my ATT Tab would have the same restrictions an ATT iPhone would (just Edge service until the 1900 Mhz refarm happened on Tmo from ATT spectrum). Also, I was working under the assumption that an ATT Tab would have the same requirements as a Tmo Tab (needing some sort of software switch to go from 2G <-> 3G), or possibly a different modem.
So, after reading some more in the Tmo forums about my Note 2 and realizing the Tmo network has 3G/HSPA on WCDMA. I messed around last night and switched my GTab to WCDMA 1900 (only) and low and behold my data popped up alternating between 3 and H. Tried a speed test and got over 5.8MB download/1.6MB download!
Frigging awesome!

T-Mobile HTC One here, using an international ROM.
I'm troubleshooting some signal/reception issues and am having a tough time knowing exactly what frequency band my phone is on at any given moment. It will show Edge, H, LTE, etc, but what I need to know is if it's on 1900 Mhz or 850, AWS, etc.
Any suggestions for a dialer code (#*#*INFO*#*# doesn't do the trick) or an app that shows actual band you're talking to the tower on? I've tried OpenSignal and a few other random signal testers.
Thanks.

Yeah, I transposed the symbols here, but not on the phone...
That screen does not display the actual frequency the phone is connecting with. I just double checked.
