So a co-worker of mine has his up on this and is able to get into the free B&N in store features while I have the same setup as he does but yet cannot see these features. Id really love to be able to use the "Read for free for an hour" feature.
Any ideas on what i can check?
Thanks,
there are a couple of different ways to root on 1.1. did you both use the same method of rooting?
I really want to figure this out as well..I'm on the verge of rooting. I want to know which of the following methods will result in BN in-store features being accessible:
1. Root from 1.0.1 using either:
a. Barebones Nooter
b. Autonooter
And then upgrade via CWM recovery to the stock rooted 1.1 rom....
OR
2. Root via Autonooter 3.0.0 from stock 1.1.
The problem with method 2 is that it is supposedly resulting in a reboot loop if clockworkmod is installed. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Aha! We have some info here. I just rooted mine with Autonooter but also flashed the prenooted 1.1.0 via Clockwork. In the other thread relating to this issue, another user suggested that this allowed him to have in-store access.
The catch here is that flashing CWR with autonooter 3.0 puts the device into a bootloop with CWR. I used the CWR remover tool to get rid of that.
After work in about 2 hours or so, I'll try to stop by a local BN and see if I have the in-store features.
UPDATE: I tested this out and it worked. Looks the prerooted 1.1 is doing something right.

Or autonooter is doing something wrong.
Maybe autonooter caused all the in store access issues in the first place.
Everyone thought b&n 1.1 fixed it, but maybe since no one was autonootering 1.1 until recently, autonooter didn't have a chance to break it.
Looks like whatever autonooter does, the preroot 1.1 fixes.
Not necessarily. There is another thread in here, but I have 1.1v2 and no instore features.
-1.0
-sideloaded 1.0.1
-Nooter v2
-then autonooter
-then flashed 1.1 v2
Leko
I have v2 and no in store either.
Bought stock 1.0
updated to 1.01
autonootered
prerooted 1.1r2
cwr to 1.1 ghz rom
Went to B&N today and no in-store special access to B&N features.
Did you guys without in store features after rooting, use the in store features before rooting?
What worked for me, before updating a clean 1.0.1 to 1.1, I used the in store features, then sideloaded 1.1 then used autonooter 3.0. I tried in store features afterwards and it works for me.

I restored my NC to stock 1.0.1. Sideloaded 1.1.0. Prepped Auto-Nooter 3.0 on a microSD and then I went to a physical BN store. Had in-store features with my 1.1.0 unrooted and downloaded a book to read. Then I used my microSD with Auto-Nooter to root my 1.1.0 NC in the BN store (lol). After rooting, I had Market, Youtube, etc... but lost in-store.
My NC came with 1.0.1, I sideloaded 1.1 and rooted with Autonooter 3. Today, I finally had a chance to go to a B&N store to test the "in store" function. NC connected to store WiFi immediately and a popup message told me that I could read certain books for up to 1 hour in the store and provided a link to those books. Then, "shop" interface opened showing many books and an "in store" banner at the corners of them. Under the "price" button, there was another one that said "read in store". So far, everything was fine and I was getting ready to read it... When I tapped on the read in store button, another window showed up with a progress bar, a cancel button and a continue button; however, the bar never progressed and the continue button was grayed out (the only available button was "cancel" which took me back to the store). I tried this with 8-10 books, but the results were the same. I guess it is safe to assume that I dont have the in store functions any more

yeah im lost right now regarding nook, just got it yesterday, my version is 1.0.1
1) Do I upgrade to 1.1.0? And then use Auto-Nooter.
2) Or is 1.1.0 to new right now and just root 1.0.1 and then Auto-Nooter.
This is the link I'm going to follow unless someone has better suggestion/input.

i'm actually wondering the same thing.
You can root any of the three versions. Just decision which and there are ways to do it. I'd recommended the monster root pack or autonooter. Both work well.
Sent from my nootered Nook Color.
So I guess my question is which is more stable/functional.
Do I just root at firmware 1.0.1? Is that the best option.
Or is there any advantage of upgrading to 1.1.0 and then rooting?
I am a newb too, I just downloaded the Auto-nooter-3.0.0.zip found elsewhere on this site. It roots 1.1.0 and I have to say it was as easy as anyone could ask for. I'd recommend just go ahead and update to 1.1.0 and then use this to auto-nooter your nook. Works like a charm. I should add that in previous versions ai have had issues getting set up with gmail and youtube, gmail worked but youtube always got borked for some reason... on this one, both are working fine, I have downloaded 2 apps already.

Which site did you use to download and follow instructions? can you post the link

Thanks for the help, so I got the process done at 1.1.0
My questions are:
1. When I install apps on the Market, I can open the app through the Download folder, but how do I get the icon on the Extras section?
2. What is the best method to configure the Soft Keys, any recommendations.
Thanks

Unfortunately I'm still too new to this site to post links, but if you go poke around in the nook color portal on nookdevs.com there are some great tips/instructions for configuring the softkeys software. I will say that I've found using a stand alone launcher (I use ADW EX) with softkeys is a great experience, and probably the most functional/useful.

Just restart system and all installed apps will show up in Extras... Have to do it everytime you install new apps
Can anyone help? Here's what happened. I rooted my nc then I was playing with for a while. Then I clicked on one off my files that I installed myself, clicked on it and my nc restarted. When it turned back on it had the nc boot screen instead of the customized boot up screen. When I tried setting it up again and signing on to my gmail account it was working. So I had to unroot the whole thing. Now everything works. But can someone explain why it restarted and kind of unrooted by itself? Thank ill really appreciate it.

Perhaps a Software Update reset your NC.
What file did you run? Also, what firmware version is your Nook currently running vs what version was it running before?
My firmware version is 1.0.1 right now. It hasn't changed. I used autorooter 2.12.25.
I actually just had the same thing happen to me with mine. It's a 1.1 from the box. All I was doing was changing some wall papers, then re-booted to try and install a different keyboard but didn't get there before seeing there was an "authentication problem" and needed to reset. I noticed some quirks after I was playing in rom manager and tried to reboot into recovery from there...whoops. I flashed nookie froyo and didn't like it, and I think reverting back gave me some issues. I've unrooted and re-rooted as of last night. I think I may just exchange it while I have the option. I used the 1.1 image posted somewhere here to un-root and used auto nooter 3.0 to root.
This just happened to me. I think it had to do with verifying my books, making sure they are legal copy's or something. or maybe updating one of my subscriptions. (Don't know)
My Nook is updated with 1.1.0
I rooted with autonooter 3.0
My thinking is that I should de-register and re-root
Than access my nookbooks thru a market app.
Lemme give a run down of what happened.
My sister used it for about a day or two, bought a couple books and tried out a couple magazines, used Pandora etc.
After the first couple days, I told her I could get Market on there so she allowed me to root it. Downloaded Monster Rootpack and cleared cache and dalvik cache. Installed the root for 1.1, got a failed boot, but it succeeded on the second attempt. Popped the SD card back in, installed gapps, failed boot again, rebooted and it worked the second time. All her books and magazines are still there, even remembered what page she was on for everything.
However, whenever she goes to the store to get more books, it begins to load and either goes to the black screen, or loads the top half of the store background and then force closes. Anyway I can fix this?
Bump. If I flashed back to stock, would that get rid of root and potentially fix this?
There's another thread <http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=953532> talking about this; I'm in the same state.

I had the same problem. To get more books, you have to root with Auto-nooter 3.0.0. I restored to stock, side loaded 1.1 and then rooted with auto-nooter 3.0.0

Sheesh, I used MRP because autonooter didn't work; I'm on a new stock 1.1.0, if that makes any difference.

I think you can just apply Autonooter 3 on top of MRP. Read the thread on auto-nooter 3.0.0. I followed the instructions and there was nothing particularly trickly about the instructions. Be sure to remove the SD card after you apply AN.

Yeah, that's what I used before to no avail. A question: why plug into your PC? Why not just turn the NC on? The SD image contains /boot, /system and /data...
Thanks!

That did it! In fact, it went very quickly, and when it booted after applying AN 3.0.0, it was just fine, I didn't have to do "the easy part". https: works, and I can get to the B&N shop! I haven't bought anything, but it looks very good!
Thanks for the idea!

I rooted my nook using MN 4.5.6 after I updated to 1.2
My device failed to reboot after I updated the flash player to 10.3, I suggest that no one does that.
Flash only works with built-in browser, for example if you install Dolphin browser it won't work on it.
I'm unable to update the market app like i have done in the past, thus the problem with tilting the device sideways to load more apps still remains.
Anyone has a solution to any of these issues?
bump bump bump
I wish I could be of some help, but at least I can reply as to whether I'm having the same issue.
My (well it's technically my wife's) NC came with 1.1
I updated that to 1.2 from the barnes & noble site, then rooted it with the latest manual nooter (4.5.18 I think.)
I did not update flash however, and flash works just fine in Dolphin HD.
The easiest thing to do would probably be to just flash to stock and then re-root it. You'll end up losing stuff, but it's probably the most sure-fire way to get back to a working state.
Edit: I have no idea what can be done about the market issue. I'm having that as well and it's kinda irritating.
Since this BBS considers me a noob, I am posting to this forum instead of the developer forum.
There has been some excellent work done on updating the ManualNooter to support the latest Nook Color software release 1.4.1. GMPOWER posted a new ManualNooter version 5.12.19 that rolls up all of the previous versions plus the tweaks to get 1.4.1 working on the NC.
I started with a stock 1.3 then updated to 1.4.1 before applying MN 4.15.15 then MN 4.6.16 before changing the permissions allowing 3rd party apps. Of course Market and the B&N Shop didn't work as documented. Next I tried 4.6.16 without success before applying GMPOWER's 4.15.19. Now I can download purchased items from the Shop but none of the Google apps work including Market.
I know that billingdl was able to get everything working doing something similar to me, but I can't seem to get the Google apps working. They fail when loading so I assume that it is a problem with them trying to authenticate my account. I would have gone back to a stock NC last night if I would have found the link to the one-click factory restore and tried just applying 4.15.19. Does anyone have any idea on how I can get the Google apps working again?
Thanks,
Mark

I understood the "secret" to GMPOWER's mn-5-12-1X was that it did NOT incorporate some of the database mods that the previous versions did. If you ran the previous versions, they broke things, in other words. I was in the same situation, and actually did the factory reset then just ran GMPOWER's latest. Everything is working fine now.
What method did you use for a factory reset. There are about 3 of them out there. A couple of days ago I saw a link for one-click reset, but now I can't find it.
Thanks bobstro!
I stopped being lazy and took my NC back to a stock 1.4.1 then applied GMPOWER's fix. Market and Gmail work along with the B&N Shop downloads. I still can't get the Google search widget to open up in a browser though. Now I have the fun of restoring all of my apps to the NC. At least everything work. Thanks to bobstro for the nudge and GMPOWER for his excellent work.
