I got customized nookie froyo 0.6.6 onto my nook color on the eMMC. After heavy set up (note: don't want to repeat it all again), I decided to switch my keyboard from Android keyboard to Gingerbread keyboard. It was already there anyway.
Right away, I get "Sorry! The application Gingerbread keyboard (process net.thinkdifferent.inputmethod.latin) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again."
Obviously trying again (going to any page, going to a text box) results in the same message. So it's a pain to navigate and it's not possible to type.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to switch keyboards without being able to see the keyboard and changing the input method? I can't get to the input method because the keyboard won't load.
I have ADB. Just let me know! I just prefer not to reflash so all my set up is gone. And I was just about to take a nandroid...

I had the same problem wth FCs when using the gingerbread keyboard. To get the "Android Keyboard" back, long-press any text input box, like the address bar in the browser, then choose input method from the pop-up. You may get FCs while doing this, just close it and try again.
I haven't figured out a solution to make the gingerbread keyboard work yet...

Thank you sooo much. That worked.
To those that have similar issues, you need an EMPTY text box and long press it. It cannot have text. I tried with Dolphin mini browser and the built-in browser and because it had text, I would only get copy, paste, add bookmarks and etc.
I could revert when I composed a new message in GMAIL and long pressed the text box for Compose.
Empty Text field example please
I have tried many text fields trying to long-press and return to the android keyboard. I do not get most to do anything while pressing. The Dolphin browser bar did pop up a menu but its the same as another poster says above in the thread, that it gives normal copy/ paste/ save options, nothing re: keyboard.
Any other suggestions for reverting off of the Gingerbread keyboard?
Thank you.
*Editing original, i located "Nook Color Tools", that is where the keyboard was changed and can be switched back. Poster in a separate thread also provided the answer for me as i was finding it myself. See: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=955198&highlight=gingerbread+keyboard

Since I rooted my Nook color this morning, when I am in the browser and go to type in a box, instead of pulling up the keyboard on half the screen and leaving the browser window on top, it pulls up the large text typing box. Is there a way I can restore this so I can see the browser too? I've poked around in the settings and tried searching for keyboards in the forums, but that came up with a zillion results.
This is for when browsing in landscape mode. (Vertical seems to be working fine.) I've tried changing from the default browser to Skyfire, but no luck.
Many keyboards are just like that, unfortunately. I know that SlideIT actually lets you see the browser when in landscape, though. You could give that or another keyboard a try.

If your willing to pay......
Better Keyboard Pro version 8 has an option to Resize the keyboard, there is also a free version but I'm not sure if it has that option. (was trying to upload a pic so you could see but not enough posts yet)
The Gingerbread keyboard displays correctly in landscape mode. There are several threads with information, including a download link to an apk that works for 2.1
If you prefer your current keyboard for portrait typing, there is an app on the market called Keyboard Manager that will change your keyboard automatically based on device orientation.
So I just rooted my nookcolor, got it working perfectly except for two keyboard related issues:
1. Whenever I select to use the gingerbread keyboard, no keyboard appears when I click on a data field.
2. When I click on 'Keyboard Settings' in the settings menu, it crashes to the home screen. I'm really just trying to turn off the setting that shows the pop-up when a key is pressed.
Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this?
Okay so I've solved the first issue by installing the gingerbread keyboard apk, however I'm still running into the second issue. I cannot for the life of me access my keyboard settings, whenever I clicked it the screen just crashes to the home screen. Does anyone have any suggestions? Is there an APK for settings that I could replace to get this working?
Keyboard
Look in the extras area for NookColor Tools
It's a screwed up place to put the keyboard selection but it's there!!
Thanks for the reply however I do not see an 'Extras' section. I've looked in both the Nookcolor Tools and the regular NookColor settings. I see the 'Keyboard' settings that crashes on me, however I don't see an 'Extras'. Could you point me in the right direction?
Nevermind, I'm an idiot. I know what you're talking about. However, that's not my issue. My issue is that when I click on 'Keyboard Settings' inside of settings, it crashes to home. I want to set my keys to not pop up when i type.
I also have a newly rooted NC and am having Keyboard issues too. (I just saw this thread as I was posting my own). I have the same issue of it crashing when you try and look at the settings. I also had the same issue with the GingerBread keyboard not showing up in a text field. I uninstalled it because I think it is broke.
I have been working with trying to get Japanese Keyboards to work with the nook so here is what you might want to do. It is ass backwards.. but its how I've been doing it to get keyboards to show up when I try to use them.
- Download a new/different gingerbread APK
- If you install it.. i bet you won't be able to select it from the keyboard list.. even after restart.
- Make sure in NookColorTools the check box is checkd for allowing 3rd party apps (if the bottom fails you might need to uncheck it and recheck it)
- Buy Root Explorer
- navigate in RE to the mysterious /data/app/ folder and find the apk that you
downloaded.. and copy it.
- navigate to /system/app/ and push the button at the top to allow writing of files.
paste the apk into this directory.
- hold in the file and it will prompt to install it.
- it might ask to replace existing ... say OK.
- Install successful.. now you will see the keyboard to choose from.
I was able to solve my gingerbread keyboard problem by just re-downloading the apk and pushing it to /system/apps/. after that i was able to select it and it's working just fine now.
however, my only problem now is accessing keyboard settings. it just always crashes to home screen. all i want to do is set the pop up on keyboard to off!
bump! anyone?!
After a while the keyboeard popup disapears, i don't see anything but when i release it uses the icon or number but it's really annoying. i also posting a screenshot to show it, the dot button is pressed to show the popup, but there is nothing to see.
Before people are starting to say wipe everything, i'm not a noob at this i flashed everything used different roms currently i'm using modified stock ROM. it was also present with CM7 builds (nightlies & rc)
Gb version GRI40 with stock kernel. I just wanted to know if other people have the same issue.
ps: reboot does fix the problem but annoying to reboot it every time.
Update:
thnx to tommert38 there is a way to get the popup working again bij 'Clear data' in Settings > Applications > Manage applications. This will remove all the keyboard settings and maybe dictionary (not sure about this).
this is also a reported issue found here > http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=15029
I've experience the same problem. I've tried foreclosing the keyboard but that doesn't work.
So far the only solution I know is a restart.

fine to hear that i'm not the only one with this issue but not fine to hear that there is a bug like this.
I also tried FC the keyboard and didn't work and this happens everyday.
What if you select 'Clear data' in Settings > Applications > Manage applications > All, under Android keyboard ?
I installed a custom keyboard with English and Dutch dictionary and had this issue once, but when I cleared data it was fine again..
If you have more than one keyboard installed, you can switch to the other keyboard and back again by long pressing the text field and selecting the Input Method option. It's a workaround, but it's easier than rebooting the phone...

my wife has reported the same issue on a non rooted stock gingerbread n1

Ok so i'ts a official GB Bug, i didn't read it anywhere so i thought i was the only one.
I believe I've seen the same, on Gingerbread, but running another keyboard (AnySoftKeyboard). The keyboard disappeared and didn't appear until reset. At the same time, switching to the regular Gingerbread keyboard worked - it showed up. Switching back to AnySoftKeyboard before reset again brought it blank.

Really? I use swype, and whenever it disappears I just switch to the android keyboard then back to swype and it always works...

this worked for me! thanks
Im getting the same issue on a stock GB N1... Only happened once so far though, and I solved it by rebooting the phone...
Having the same issues even on the Nexus S. Fixed by force closing the android keyboard. Never happened before until recently. I think its GB.
I dont remember having this issue on GB 2.3.2 (when using CM7 Nightlies) did this happen after the update to 2.3.3?
I have the same problem using HTC Ime Mod (oxygen 2.0.1, HTC Desire). In this mod there is an option to kill te keyboard. That's enough to fix it!
Yea, this only happened after upgrading to gingerbread. Stock 2.3.3, never modified.
If i clear the Android keyboard data, doesn't that mean i loose the keyboard permanently? I'd need another keyboard as a backup right?

No you won't loose your keyboard only the settings of the keyboard and maybe (not sure) custom dictionary.
I saw this thread yesterday (never noticed the bug until I after I read this ) but have noticed it several times now. I just took the keyboard from CM7 RC1 and pushed it to /system/app/LatinIME.apk. I haven't been using it very long, but so far I have not gotten the bug again. I will report back after a few hours of usage on my finding. Also, I noticed nothing functionality wise that differs from the 2.3.2 and 2.3.3 LatinIME's.
Update: the bug occurred anyways, but force closing the keyboard restored it to working function.

Clearing the keyboard means that all settings go to default. This means I only have to select which dictionaries I want to use, because I don't touch the other settings It won't delete your keyboard and it's still better than rebooting the phone!
This morning my 2 yo decided to have a play with my phone. He handed me the phone back and blurbed something like its was broken daddy.
When I had a look it had the below screen shot on the screen, "Unfortunately, (INSERT FOREIGN LANGUAGE HERE) Has Stopped."
The only thing I can see wrong is that the keyboard is now not working. Dialer still works but the keyboard in browser, sms, email........... have stopped working.
Every time I change screens this error pops up. I had a look in the apps menu and the keyboard is still showing as an installed app but its not showing in the running apps menu. I thought it normally did?
Anyone had this problem? Or can suggest a fix?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Tried with another keyboard ?
Thanks for that, I just found the problem.
My boy enable a k/board option (Chinese) that isn't an option. I can't disable in the k/board options but I can disable it in the programs.
i love to use use swiftkey. But on galaxy s6, even after I choose swiftkey as default keyboard, samsung keyboard turns itself into default keyboard after a while (anywhere from few minutes to hours...). it is so annoying to select manually swiftkey all the time. Any way around this issue?
gurus , any idea ?
if nothing else you could probably use tasker to automatically set swiftkey as your default keyboard every X minutes/hours and/or when you use X programs.
OR you might be able to make it notify you via popup/alarm when samsung keyboard becomes default in order to try and pinpoint the cause
It'd be a little more advanced than anything I've done with tasker so I can't give you step by step instructions on the setup you'd need to create, but a quick google yielded these instructions, you could tweak it to your needs:
http://code.rawlinson.us/2012/10/android-change-keyboard-based-on-app.html
it's not a real fix, but a temporary workaround is better than nothing. I'm currently using tasker to workaround an issue I have with MMS not sending when connected to wifi. (Shuts wifi off for 10 seconds when mms comes in)
Questions:
-Have you attempted using another 3rd party keyboard to see if it does it to all keyboards or just swype? I use "Jelly Bean Keyboard" (downloadable from google play) and I can say once or twice its gone back to samsung keyboard, but i THINK that was due to me tinkering and accidentally resetting defaults.
-though more than likely useless, have you tried wiping your cash? shut phone off then hold power + home + volume up (or is it down?) and select wipe cash then restart phone
-finally although I don't recommend this until all other options are exhausted, it's worth asking just to know what you've tried, have you done a factory reset yet?
i've downloaded swiftkey and set it as default in my S6 just to try and help, I'll use it for a day or two and see if it resets on me and report back
Disable or freeze the Samsung keyboard

From what I know you can't disable Samsung keyboard, at least not without root
Edit: nevermind, went into input method in settings and yes theres a disable option for Samsung keyboard.
Ive been using swiftkey since yesterdays post, so far no issue, its stayed as the selected option
finally, got it working. I have been trying to disable samsung keyboard from settings, but it will enable itself everytime. this time, i have also disabled google voice typing option, and now Swiftkey stays as default. I dont know what is the co-relation between the two, but it works. Thanks all of you for various suggestions.

I keep google voice typing enabled for occasional use while driving if I need to respond to a txt asap, along with an alternate (jellybean) keyboard as primary, it's never caused an issue for me before
Day 2 into using swiftkey keyboard (with google voice typing enabled) without any disabling/resetting to default samsung keyboard problems
On a side note, if I could remove the word suggestion bar I'd probably keep swiftkey now, got a theme i like on it and learning to enjoy it, though I dont use the swype function at all
