firerats CM7 help - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i was just wondering if there was an easy way to set up firerats i dont have adb is thr a way to do it?

No. Install the ADB drivers (if you are rooted I'd imagine you already do...), follow the instructions found in the thread or aospGB Wikipedia, and enjoy. Its really easy, but if reading/searching isn't your thing, then the mod isn't for you.

Well, actually, if you use Clockwork Recovery, you can reboot to recovery without ADB, as noted in the Firerat thread.

You can reboot to recovery from the advanced menu in Clockwork Recovery in any of the versions- not just 3.0.0.5 which has been modified for GB. I am running 2.5.0.1 I believe.

If your using RA 1.7 just flash the custom mtd zip first then wipe data,cache,dev-cache and ext. You don't have wipe ext but I always did. Then it will ask you to reboot. Choose power down from recovery. Then hold power and home till you reboot back into recovery. It will say formating cache at the bottom of your screen. If it just stays there then just power back down and repeat the power and home to get back into recovery. If it finishes, then flash your rom of choice and mods. But always flash the kernel last if your using one. Then flash the custom mtd boot zip then reboot you should be good to go. Ps -don't forget the text file and make sure your battery is @ least 85-90% charged good luck

.AWAH.

Just use ADB and follow the wiki, or don't use it at all.

[MOD][RECOVERY] Firerat's Custom MTD Partitions (resize Data,System and Cache)
So,I did this mod,I'm using MTD 100 18.I used ADB to reboot into recovery, everything went fine and worked great but now I cant obtain an IP address from my wifi here at home. Has anybody else had this problem? I'm thinking about possibly doing it like this:
1.Wipe data,cache,dalvik
2.Flash Recovery patch
3.Reboot normal into operating system
4.Go into ROM Manager
5. Flash new ROM and then Flash the boot.zip
6.Reboot the phone
Anybody have any comments or ideas for this or my problem? This happened to me before as well. It just won't obtain an IP address from an N++ Wireless Router. WTF!? IDK,hope to get some answers back from everybody!
OK,just found another problem along with this other stuff. I went into my ROM manager after the flash and everything was complete and it says : "You must root your phone for ROM manager to function.Superuser was not found at "/system/bin/su" or "/system/xbin/su". Use Google Search on your computer to find instructions to root your phone." Anybody else ever get this? I'm starting to feel mad about this and may totally start over and use my nand to flash back to what I was running before. Any ideas and help is very greatly appreciated! IMO.......You should have ADB installed regardless of wether or not it's needed to install Firerats or any other mod. It's such an important tool for any rooted phone, and some day could represent your only hope of being able to save your phone from certain death.

+1. I installed ADB just for Firerats, then did some research, and found I didn't need it. BUT, because I had it installed, it allowed me to change my eri.xml file to reflect my carrier, change my build.prop file to get Google Music, and virtually open a new world of development. Learning is where it's at.

I set it up without ADB! Just try placing the .txt file along with the boot and CustomMTD file on your SdCard, then from Clockwork Go to Mounts and Storage then Format Boot, System, Data, and Cache, Then back out to the Main Menu!
Next Flash the FR Recovery (Custom MTD), then Return back to Mounts and Storage and Repeat the Format Step Again!
Next Reboot back to Recovery from Advanced.... Then Simply Flash your Rom, Flash the FR Boot.zip file, and Reboot the phone! And it Should Work from there!
Good-Luck!

For those wanting firerats, never ever follow the above steps, it will not work that way, period. FR is a recovery patch, so after applying it you need to rebuild the boot.img, which the CORRECT steps account for in the actual firerats thread.

That's still unnecessary, try this (all you have to do to use this is push the quote button, then copy/paste it to your sig. Also, When viewing from a computer, you see this one (because you send from your phone), AND you see the regular xda sig, which is literally the same (and needs to be fixed too maybe?) Also, if you don't use this, I officially hatez you

[Q] I've rooted my Hero with Universal Androot with Superuser, now what?

I've been looking around different forums but haven't found a dedicated guide for installing a custom rom after using the relatively new Universal Androot the Sprint CDMA Hero.
I'm wanting to install the new CyanogenMod on my Hero since Sprint has made my phone obsolete and hardly usable.
I think the next step is doing a nandroid backup or disabling OTA updates but have been a bit cautious as to I'm new with the Android OS. Can anybody point me to a guide or suggest where I can pick up next? Also can anyone point me to an up-to-date nandroid backup guide?
Thanks.
Make sure you have a custom recovery image flashed on your phone. From there, making nandroid backups and flashing new ROMs is as easy as reading the menu prompts in your recovery image.
You are already rooted so not all these steps will apply to you, but this post here should help get you further along: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572
Also, the "Take Control..." link in my signature will be very helpful for you.

Once you've installed a Custom Recovery Image, just boot to recovery (Hold the home button and press power ... hold home until it vibrates). It will boot to recovery, then you can select "Backup/Restore" and "Backup Nandroid". It will ask you to press Home to confirm, and once you do it will create the backup. Once finished, you can install custom roms.
To do this, download the zip for the rom from the forums for that rom, and save it to the root of your SD card. Boot into recovery, and wipe all traces of the current rom. To do this, select "Wipe", then select ext partition, dalvik-cache, and data (wipe each individually in that order). Then, press back button to return to the main screen. Then choose flash zip, and choose the rom zip you saved. Press home to confirm, and it will install. Reboot, and you have a new rom!
Thanks for the great newbie "how to" below, I just finished rooting, want to go to cm6. I know I can do this, have messed with Windows and Pre, but have one question -
how do I get the zip rom to the card? I have been on Treos too long without using card, can see no way to read, see access, to see what goes on it. With this information, I will try immediately - my goal was tethering, increased speed, and flexibility.

Plug your USB cable/charger into your phone and PC. After a second or two, you should see a little USB icon show up in your taskbar. Slide your taskbar down and touch that notification -- it will pull up a little menu with 3 or 4 options -- choose Disk Drive mode. That lets you mount the SD card to your PC, just like a flash drive or memory stick would mount. From there you can put files on, remove files, create new folders, etc.
Put the ROM .zip in the root (main) directory of the sd card to be able to flash the ROM from recovery.
Here's another noob question, I just want to make sure since I've only one phone right now and depend on it for work: What exactly is a Custom Recovery Image?

The custom recovery allows you to do all sorts of things that you can't do otherwise to your phone, such as installing and using all the cool Custom ROM and update zips, installing different kernals for the processor in your phone to set the CPU to what ever you want it to run, wiping various parts of the device it self or on the sd card with all of the the different types of caches and different partitions after changing to a custom rom and being able to make a different partitions and such that you will need to do this to begin with, being able to back up your data and restoring the phone to it's original state or to a state where it was working with a custom rom before having trouble, like if something you have installed is making it crash or force closed.
In other words it is something you need if you want to do anything with your phone to change it from a paper weight like it is to you in stock form to what they can be once it's unlocked...

you do have GB bootloader right? I'd try from scratch again....Bootloaders then kernel then C5....follow method 1 in the C5 OP......good luck.....oh, and I have had mounting issues before and can't remember how it happened, but I think I went to mount and storage in cwm and formatted the sdcard.
EDIT: maybe it's an rfs/ext format issue......not sure just trying to help...might get more help in the C5 thread.

lol no wonder I'm the only one. There are 2 versions of GB and I was just wondering if you had the right combination. Sorry to bother you. Good luck.
both gingerbread versions have the same bootloaders.
and neither are my problem!
my problem is with CWM and or kernel.
and there is no such thing as the right combination for gingerbread, if you mix or combine bootloaders you brick!
thank you for your input, but it is not relevant.
the reason no one else has answered is because this is not easy or normal! (it would be fixed already!)
and only a handful of people could help!
Tried adb? Only thing I can think of. Good luck.
try adb to do what?
but anyway I FIXED IT!!!!
im not sure what did it though!
it may have been:
using cwm2.5 to flash firefly3 may have re-mounted some areas left unmounted
or
the final time i flashed gingerbread again, i did the WHOLE package instead of just bootloader package WITH PIT FILE AND REPARTITION. then loading talon.
all is good now.
hope this helps someone in the future.

[SELFKANG AOSP ROM] CyanogenMod 7.1 Alpha Release [UPDATE 11/16 PM]

** [UPDATE 11/16] = Minor update adding Droid3Bootstrap / RomManager support for installs. You DO NOT need Safestrap to install CM7 now. Any Bootstrap will work.
[UPDATE 11/10] = Better audio (still debugging why volume will occassionally fall back down -- if it does go into settings -> sound -> volume and drag the media slider up -- will reset it), fixed bluetooth -- 2nd ota patch .zip for 5.7.894 OTA users
It's an OMAP4 optimized AOSP build using CyanogenMod sources. I used some of the published Moto Source (9/18) where I felt it was appropriate to get the low level services running. You will not see any Blur files in this build.
Download Link Here
If you're running the 5.7.894 OTA, you will also want to apply a 2nd .zip afterward to update the few stock binaries that are in the build. It's under the .zip download links.
Changelog Here
For the most up-to-date information / builds check my blog: http://hash-of-codes.blogspot.com
What is working in this build:
Phone dial and recieve calls (10/18)
Wifi
SD Cards
Audio is getting better
GPS
3G data
Bluetooth
lots I can't list
Feel free to flash gapps and test away. To download GApps go here and select the top "universal CM7 link for GB"
What isn't working:
Camera app doesn't soft reset the phone anymore, but it isn't working yet either.
Phone app FC's on the boot. Just close the notification and it'll restart 3G immediately.
Audio is very funky atm. It's getting better. If you lose volume, try opening Setting -> Sound -> Volume and drag the "media" slider down and then back up.
GSM Users:
I reviewed some changes submitted by XDA's coreless88 and for the moment I'm just not comfortable putting them in the main build. They would default the phone to GSM/WCDMA. I WILL absolutely get the native support for both GSM and CDMA working as this build matures. It just may take a while. If you really want a GSM variant of this build let me know and I'll reproduce a version with his build.prop changes. For me personally, this can't be a daily driver till the audio issues are fixed.
Great I need calling so won't try it yet, but thanks for all your work
will test it out tonight o hell more like as soon as i get a chance lol
So if 3G works can I still get texts? I don't need to talk to anyone.
yeah texts works, gapps works. just a few funny things. and not like "ha ha" funny either!
still BA!

Good Question! Short answer: yes.
For now, you have to run a backup (MotoBlur), then format /system, wipe data/cache and install the CM7 zip. When you're done with CM7, you can do another backup (if you want to save CM7) and then restore your original MotoBlur. Make sure to toggle the "Safe System" setting afterward.
As soon as I fix some things in the CM7 build so that the phone is usable, I'm going to work on Safestrap some more.
The next version of Safestrap will automatically store and load your userdata when you toggle the "Safe System" setting. So there won't be a need to perform all of the backup/restores. It will just be the 1 toggle and then reboot.
And sometime in the future, I'm going to put up a MotoBlur "ROM" .zip which runs in 2nd-system. SO stuff like SteelDroid or other ROMs can be safer to install/run. Devs can use that MotoBlur ROM as a template for doing theming, and other things.
It really depends on how well received Safestrap is and if the community wants to see more of it.

I'm going to put the fastboot files on my site for download. It might take a while. Showing 2 hours for the 420M file. I'll update this post with a link in a bit.
Edit:
Unfortunately the nature of flashing ROMs over your live system on a locked bootloader phone means that the hijiack is broken until you can get into the OS and reinstall some sort of Bootstrap. And this was exactly the reason why I developed Safestrap. :/
That being said, you'll likely be able to just flash your /system using the fastboot files and you'll be fine. And don't forget to wipe userdata when swapping ROMs. I've seen countless bootloops from not wipeing userdata. This is ESPECIALLY important for CM7 vs. MotoBlur.

It really depends on how well received Safestrap is and if the community wants to see more of it.

thanks hashcode, for CM7 work, safestrap, etc...YOU ARE GREATNESS!!!

OH, I totally forgot that the phone FCs on boot. It reloads 3G data shortly afterward. I have a fix coming for that as well.
You could say.. the OS boots too fast for it.
THe normal boot process for MotoBlur involves the phone coming up as GSM initially, doing a few checks for network, failing and then dropping into a Janky CDMA version of GSM.
CM7 currently boots straight to CDMA.

MotoBlur.

I appreciate it. I have teh file blur_version.5.5.959.xt862.verizon.en.us.zip Is that the fastboot?
nevermind. i found it here http://rootzwiki.com/showthread.php?5103-SBF-Droid-3-Fastboot-files-(5.5.959-and-5.6.890)
i really appreciate you doing that for me though. i just shat a brick (no pun intended)

[HOW-TO]VERY EASY 4.1.2 to 4.2 update

One super easy way to go to 4.2 from 4.1.2, IMO. This keeps root and current recovery (TWRP). I did it last night. No adb, no PC, all done on device.
I had no issues doing this, but....if you do it's not my fault. You decided to to do it to your device...not me. I doubt you'll have an issue if you follow this to the "T". But by doing this, you agree that I am not responsible for any problems you may have.
1. Download the update via OTA or HERE
2. Must have TWRP recovery! May work on CWM, but I haven't tested it and don't know if it will.
3. If you have flashed a kernel, done the 720p camera mod, altered the build.prop, etc.... you will get an error when trying to flash. I managed to copy most files from a stock rom to get rid of most errors. But the last error was a partition error which I was not to sure how to fix. Best and easiest way is to backup apps with Titanium Backup, then backup the whole sha-bang in recovery. Then download and flash THIS. Make sure you check the root in Aroma....believe it's checked by default.
4.Set it up, then re-install apps with Titanium Backup. DO NOT DELETE, MOD, OR FLASH ANYTHING ELSE!
5. Download and use THIS. You should show "Device rooted", "Root permission granted", and "/system supports root protection" checked.
****Images below are generic from Google Images, may look different on your device****

"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Click the "Protect root" button, then "Protected su copy available" should be checked. All boxes now should be checked.
6. Boot into TWRP. Flash the update. (If you did the OTA download and cannot find it, it's in the /cache file. You may need to check mount system in TWRP to access it. You will need to mount system later anyway.)
7. It should flash without any issues if you followed the directions so far.
8. DO NOT REBOOT! STAY IN RECOVERY OR YOU'LL LOSE CUSTOM RECOVERY (TWRP)
9.Make sure system is mounted. Then go to Advanced>File Manager. Go to /system/recovery-from-boot.p and delete or rename the file (recovery-from-boot.p.bak).
10. Reboot to system. Then go back to Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper and click "Restore root".
11. You should be good to go. Doing everything mentioned updated me from 4.1.2 to 4.2, kept root and TWRP.
12. If it worked, and it should have.....please hit the thanks button.:good:
I'm trying this method now . don't know if it 'll be passed or not but Good Work  Thanks :good:
edit : i put file update .tar into my nexus but i can't find any way to install it in TWRP mode ? Help

I understand.. I just try to help out and be nice to the new people who are legit struggling. We've all been there and it can be pretty confusing.. Now, don't get me wrong there are also new folks who use it as an excuse to be lazy and not actually do anything.. Those types are hard to nail down though.
Having issues myself.....try this for the OTA update. Haven't checked, but should be like an 80mb file IIRC.

You can call me whatever you want if you're going to post stuff like this that works. :good: Thanks. I used CWM Recovery and it worked fine. I backed everything up, but didn't lose anything. I was Rooted and Unlocked. I was stock except I added beat audio and this resolved my problem.
Leif
I just flashed one of the rooted stock 4.2 Roms. Took a few minutes to download, reboot to recovery, complete wipe, and install. Took a couple of minutes to do the setup, restore apps with titanium.

I cant understand the problem.

Maybe your USB connection pins are damaged and therefore appears as if connected to PC
Did you try yo flash a stock rom using Odin in case a problem of the software?
thank you for your reply, i have tried odin with ops and pda selected but it gets stuck at setup connection. And i really need an idiots guide (since its hard to understand what you guys are talking about, im not so advanced) on how to format/wipe phone and install new android with rooting.

You can do it but you need to access to recovery mode to get root and flash custom roms...so
Check that your USB pins are not broken
A VERY IMPORTANT QUESTION: Is your device the GT-S5830 model?
Follow this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1034145
1. Install Samsung drivers
2. Download a fiwmware from here: http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/1/?model=GT-S5830&pcode=0#firmware
3. Follow the prompt C
Try it to avoid your problem, then if you succeed, you could flash a custom recovery and root your device to get a custom rom.
Yes, it is gt-s5830, my usb cabel maybe a little damaged, since it seems i have rolled over it with my office chair, going to buy a new one today. Phones usb seems fine to me.
Thank you for your help. I managed to get my phone working again. I've decided not to root it. Thanks again!

well you can do it whenever you want
Use this tutorial to do it ROOT + CWM 5.0.2.6 FIXED
I don't use my USB, even I created a tutorial "TUTORIAL HOW TO TRANSFER FILES WITHOUT AN USB CABLE" (via WIFI) (forget USB cable and extract/insert your sdcard)... about using Odin... It's NO NECCESSARY if you have a backup of your fresh rom or favourite custom rom (CWM)
use 2.3.3 XXKPH whit multiple files.. i finished this problem whit this package
I've changed my mind, im going to try and root it, so afterwards i can insatll jb on it.

The best advice: do a BACKUP using CWM ... if something go wrong when you flash a patch or a custom rom, you always can restore your backup

Let me advise you something more xD
We have a GREAT ANDROID DEVELOPMENT SECTION with the latest UPDATES and LOTS of ROMS from awesome dev's:
HERE
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1167
AND HERE
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1725
Android 4.0.4 (CM9), 4.2.2 (CM10.1) and 4.3 (CM10.2) are available for us thank to dev's
If you follow dev's instructions to install his rom you won't face any problem
I'd just like to highlight what just happened to your phone as per the pic posted in the op, so that if some newbie with the same problem happens to go by this thread doesn't panic.
Such a problem is usually caused when your phone is disconnected from the computer when it is halfway through the flashing via odin. In this case, your phone gets stuck up at the screen shown in op. But the downloading mode is still accessible. Just reflash stock by getting into the downloading mode via odin & you are good to go.
