A friend has asked me to update her Orange Samsung S to Froyo using Kies.
Does this reset the phone back to factory settings, or just upgrade the firmware. And is it possible to do an over the air update if this is better?
Sorry for such a basic question, but I use an HTC so wondered if it was different.
Thanks for any help.
it shouldn't reset to factory settings.
but if you want performance, it is recommended to factory reset before you install a new rom.
make a backup using titanium backup and you will have all your data again
cheers

You can flash one of the one click odin without BOOTLOader from this thread ...........
boot into recovery...wipe data/factory reset
that will remove all user data, all accounts on the phone, all user apps, just like you fresh flashed the rom....

Hi guys,
My phone has been working great until today. for some reason now when I install a new app, if it is forced close or if I reboot the phone, I lose all the setting for the apps. It only happens to new apps, the one installed before today are (so far) keeping the settings.
Has this ever happened to anyone? Please help. I know some of you might suggest a factory reset, but unless somebody had this problem and reset helped with it, I will hold off on that because if it ends up not working I will be left with all my apps losing their settings all the time.
I am on I9000T on stock Froyo 2.2.1 if that can help.
Anyone? Please I really need help on this one. This has to have happened to somebody here?
Problem with the firmware.!!
I think that there must be a problem with the Firmware .. Try updating your phone via kies or Flashing Gingerbread using ODIN..

Before this, you could try and do a factory reset and see if the problem persists! If it does, then reflash with Odin! Good Luck!
Thanks for replying guys. I have a question: if it is a file system problem, will a firmware update or factory reset help?
Also, I have had this firmware for almost a year now, why would have I a problem with it now, I am not rooted and I have attempted (yet) anything with flashing.
If ur phone has a file-system error Reflashing or factory resetting ur phone will help 4 sure as the files will be cleaned up and installed again..u phone may have dis problem due to any virus... u need to root ur phone 1st then flash gb

I have also had this problem come up on my phone. The phone just crashed on a Sat night and on reboot the software looked like I had taken it out the box brand new. Lucky I had Titanium Backup and restored everything.
Only thing then is that the vast majority of apps don't remember settings and on a start of the app it's in 'first time' mode.
Did a ROM flash using ODIN and default ROM (search this forum for instructions and software if you need it) and this fixed it properly - 12 hours in and no issues.
Credits to Titanium Backup here - like insurance you only know if it's any good when you actually need it.
hi guys
want to confirm sumthin..
1. there is a function under setting--privacy--restore data factory in my note
im running rocket rom v19 which came originally when i bought this 2nd hand set.. there is also rooted, cwm, jkay inside..
so the question is.. what will happen if i do the factory reset from here?
will my rooted(super user),cwm, jkay gone or erase?
will it go back to stock rom?
2. there is full wipe option in cwm.. izzit wipe all the rom file oso? what will happen when i do full wipe without flashing any rom?
is there any option in cwm to remove all data/account only? ( i mean to make it like super virgin yet still with the same rom with rooted, cwm and jkay)
hope you guys can help on this.. i want to remove all the previous owner data..
You can factory reset from clockwork....its all good just backup what you don't want to lose.
Btw you won't lose root....just do the reset from clockwork.....i have had issues doing it from inside the Rom.
One last thing make sure you keep a zip of the Rom onboard so if you run into bootloops after the reset you can just reinstall the Rom and be brand new.....you could also do that instead of the reset if you wanted also.

full wipe from CWM will restore your note to default settings
default as in a clean install of:
- current installed rom (Rocket v19)
- Root
- jKay
- CWM
- no apps
So, better you back up using TiBu first whatever you need to restore after defaulting
Hi
I am from India and I connected my phone to kies and its saying that new firmware version is available.
Before upgrading I have few questions in mind. Is ICS is working fine on Note. I Heard may people saying that its freezing and consuming more battery and Wi Fi not working.
Have anybody upgraded Note to ICS in India..Hows the reviews..Any problem with phone you guys are facing.
Thanks in Advance
Ankush
Well some people have problems, ICS aint exactly bug free. But you can avoid most problems if you do a factory reset before upgrading. Then you will have a clean system but you will also loose all apps etc.
I am using stock ICS in India.
In my opinion Its better than GB, Better battery life, Better performance.
I updated via OTA.
Before updating i recommend you to perform a full wipe/factory reset.
After Update I rooted my phone using Dr. Ketans Method. Uninstalled all the Samsung crap-ware. Flashed Hardcore speedmod Kernel. Wiped Two three times. Some Recharge discharge cycle.
Now my note is running Butter smooth & leg free.
Good luck! Enjoy your note.
Thanks for help
I really don't want to root it , Just checked once I connected the phone to kies that there is a update ready to install.
few ques again
1.)How to reset my phone to factory default settings ?
2.)What are the changes in ICS
Thanks in advance

To reset your phone go to settings - backup & restore - reset.
Or
Switch off the phone, after 1 min press and hold vol up+home+power key until you see recovery screen. Choose factory reset/data wipe...
DO IT BEFORE UPDATING TO ICS....
i recently upgraded ota from xxlpy to xxlrg. unit is original n7000 germany. never used Odin or such to install firmware.
the problem is, on every restart, the note will say that it is upgrading and installing new apps similar to what happens when the first boot after upgrading. this will take a long time to start from power off or reboot. verified this happens every time. this never happens before when i upgraded from gb to xxlpy.
everything else seem to run ok . i have root and unrooted using simple unroot with supersu without problem. i have titanium pro for backup but afraid to factory reset because of the brick issue. appreciate any feedback.
thanks.

nope. tried that just to make sure. that setting is for checking if there are any new updates available. thanks anyway. if you read my post again, what happens is that the upgrade to XXLRG (4.0.4) was successful, just that it does the first boot installation (s-memo, crayon. wallpaper etc) again and again on each reboot or start from power off. this makes reboot taking more than one minute. others have same problem?
any guru here have some clue?

nobody having this problem of XXLRG reinstalling apps?
anyway, today another OTA notification saying theres another update.
should i go for it?
regards,
You need to do factory reset. Either to go back to GB and then do wipe, or flash a safe ICS kernel (speedmod, notecore, franco, etc) and do full wipe in recovery. Never do factory reset or full wipe in stock ICS.

if your getting every reboot on your phone 'Android is upgrading applications..', case here is that you have some apps (I would guess you restored apps from titanium pro) that are deodex and some are odex. Check on your apps again under titanium apps and delete all odex files extension for the same app name. There might be one or more apps that have odex files inside. This is the cause of that message everytime you reboot your phone.
Or the simple way is go back to Stock GB, upgrade again to XXLRG and when you have everything already flashed to LRG.. DON'T restore apps anymore (from your Titanium backup), go clean from now on in just redownloading those apps you have fresh in Google play.
Cheers!
