what would be the best kernal and modem combo for this rom i really want good battery life I just got my captivate 6 days ago and out of 3 roms i like this one just want to know the best choices.
Speedmod k12t kernel and KP1 modem.
Take a look at my signature, results speak!!
Nothing against what any particular person will state or tell you to use, not all combination's will necessarily have the same effect from phone to phone. This is really the same as which ROM is the best because what works well on phone "A" might not work the same as phone "B". Just try different combos to find what your phone likes because these phones are very finicky.
i've been reading and this is what i come up with looking at the rom i flashed this is what is says.
model #sgh-i897
firmware 2.2
baseband i9000ugjk3
kernal version 2.6.32.9
build # gingerr5
off this info which kernal would i flash the one for captvate or the one for galaxy s i9000.i just dont want to do something stupid sorry for the questions.
You would flash an sgh-i897 kernel.
Here's a link to hardcore's kernel, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=893880.
you can use sgs kernel flasher to install it.
The link is at the bottom of the original post in the attached files box
not to ask more ? but is that because my phone is still based on captivate but with just a base rom.and what is really a base rom 2.2 mod to work on captivate?
Yes, the captivate sgh-i897 doesn't have 2.2 froyo yet, because it hasn't been released yet, but developers used the leaked version of froyo to base their roms off of. An i9000 rom is actually a rom from an i9000 galaxy s phone that was adapted for the captivate. But basically, all you have to worry about is whether or not the numbers match up.

I have done reading a lot of post recently.
I brick'ed my cappy once, I reflash the stock kernel, and it came back alive.
After that, I managed flashing my I897 into Foyo 2.2 and with Cog 2.4.1 Rom.
So far so good.
I am still very afraid of brick my cappy again.
So, I decided post question here, just to clear my mind.
If I wanna flash it into an I9000 Rom from Cog 2.4.1 Rom
What are the right steps ??
My current system config is listed here
Firmware 2.2
Baseband Version - I897 UCJJ4
Kernel Version - 2.6.32.9
Build Number - Cognition. v2.4.1
The best thing you can do is decide which i9000 Rom you want to flash to and read the OP of that thread for exactly how to flash. It is gonna require both odin and clockwork though. Which Rom are you wanting to go to?

From your opinion, which I9000 Rom is most popular ?? (This might be the best one i think)
Is it ganna be better than Cog's I897 rom ??
Really I prefer to stick with cognition but there is no denying that setirons kernel is the best one going right now but it doesn't play well with cognition. If I was going to go i9000 I would use mikeymikes conversion of docs Rom...it looks really nice and everyone in that thread loves it.
I have installed COG 3.03 and find it great.
I want to unleash the power of the Wolfson DAC , and for that it seems I need a compatible kernel. When I installed the Voodoo App I got the message to do so.
Now I have search many, many, many threads, and I am MORE confused if anything; can someone point me towards the correct (and clear! 100 pages long threads make it very confusing to see what is the consensus) info for the following questions:
Which kernel should I choose?
How do I install it?
Do I HAVE to change my modem if I change the kernel?
Will the kernel swap have any incidence on future ROM choice I might do?
Will changing the kernel do anything to my reception (which is super great)?
Any help is appreciated; again, I tried understanding what to do by myself like a big boy, but I got to read so many threads in some many directions, that I can't make a clear choice....

Hmmm, isn't this what Supercurio is doing with his kernel drivers? Some kernels in here already have supercurio's code in, and you also need to use the app he made.
I think almost all recent kernels support it. If it says supports voodoo sound there you go. Try hardcores kernel.

Supercurio's audio thread has a link to all the kernels with Voodoo Sound. You can also just look for the phrase "Voodoo sound" in the short description.
Unfortunately, AFAIK every Voodoo sound kernel for Captivate is i9000/i9010-based, which means you'll have to switch modems (and lose bluetooth calls, unless you also switch to a different ROM) as well.
I'm sort of amazed no one put this and BLN into the native-Captivate Rogers Froyo source yet. DG said he had a test version of this combo *weeks* ago, but no release thread. And somehow no other kernel devs are interested...
Oh yeah, someone will kill this thread im sure cause it doesn't belong here. Should be in q and a.

Yeah, I see this thread being moved or locked soon.
I run Cognition 3.04 with hardcore's speedmod kernel, which has the Voodoo Sound 4 drivers in it. I use the T959D TLJL3 modem which gives me great reception and killer data speeds.
When you flash a new ROM, you'll probably be wiping and reinstalling everything anyway, so chances are you would have to flash whatever kernel/modem flavor you choose again anyway.
So:
Which kernel should I choose?
Any REORIENTED i9000 kernel with Voodoo Sound 4 will do.
How do I install it?
Most of them have the option to use either Odin or Clockworkmod Recovery. Since you're already using Cognition, make sure the Clockworkmod Recovery that you use has RED FONT. If you're installing the speedmod kernel it will be GREEN FONT thereafter.
Do I HAVE to change my modem if I change the kernel?
Since you're probably going to be flashing a reoriented i9000 kernel, i9000 modems will work best. I've had no problem running the JJ4 Captivate modem, but others have. Also, like I said above, the T959D TLJL3 modem is great.
Will the kernel swap have any incidence on future ROM choice I might do?
See above.
Will changing the kernel do anything to my reception (which is super great)?
This is certainly more affected by your modem than your kernel. I haven't seen kernels have any great effect on this.
HOWEVER, it's worth mentioning that i9000 kernels will chew up more battery than Captivate ones. Don't count on more than 20 hours of battery life... if you can even get that on a stock phone, LOL.
To flash a new kernal you can either use CWR or SGS kernal flasher from the market to install it. You do not have to change the modem when you change the kernal and when it comes to picking one that will work with voodoo you can usuall find that out in the original post.

I am using cog 3.04 with the firebird 2 ver1 and jk4 modem to use voodoo control. I flash back to stock cog.3.04 kernel & modem when I want to use bluetooth. Speed mod kernel caused my phone issues. Seems to be trial and error with each phone, good luck with your set up
i peeked at a few of the 2.3.4 ROMs and it seems that they're all heavily themed or modded.
is there one that is close to stock with only a few tasteful mods?
thanks
2.3.4-For Captivate, no. For the i9000, there is JVP& JVQ. You have to use a reoriented kernel with the I9000 roms.
2.3.3-For Captivate, kinda. UCKF1 is a leak, but a very stable one. Cognition 5 is built off the kf1. Since kf1 is a leak, it can't really be called official stock.
thanks. looks like i'm gonna grab a stock JVQ ROM. any recommendations for a kernel that would work best with that?
PS. i was looking at the stock i9000 roms on this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=948790
I would go with the Talon kernel. It has a lot if features, plus you can choose from 4 different clock speeds (1000, 1200,1300& 1400).
Asfor downloading firmware, I would go to www.samfirmware.com. They have a large selection, but you will have to register (free) to dl anything.

Try out the latest Talon kernel. Works great with the JVQ ROM I have.
so the stock samfirmware ROMs are preferred to the deodexed ones found here on XDA?
ty!
I prefer to dl from samfirm if I can, buy I think you would be ok using either.
gave jvq with talon a shot. got the home key working (except haptic - trying to fix that resulted in boot loop). put aosp theme on it. looked amazing, however i found that set up a bit sluggish than i'm used to, and also the the touchscreen seemed a bit insensitive.
so running 2.3.3 kf1 now. like it so far...
Apex 8.2, JVQ, 2.3.4 ...... It look like Galaxy S2 stock... and I recommend you DarkCore Kernel... Talon is so laggy for me!
I am new to Galaxy S but have had experience with roms, kernels and radios from a G1.
I started with Samsung 2.2 firmware and rooted it using Cyanogenmod wiki page and flashed the latest MIUI. I know kernels change speed and include Voodoo colours and sound for Galaxy S. I also now radios can change signal and gps accuracy.
1)Are modems the same as radios and if so where do I find a list of them?
2)What is the best bootloader and why does the Gingerbread one not have sd cards work? Also what else doesn't work?
3)How can I check which radio I have and if I flash any bootloaders how do I check that?
Radio, Modem and Baseband are all the same thing. You can check which one you have by going to Settings >About Phone and checking the Baseband Version.
A new modem is easy to flash as a zip file from Recovery and you can find lots of them by searching in the Dev forum, however make sure you flash a modem that is for CM7 since you have Miui installed. For guidence you can search for Modem in the Miui or CM7 thread in the Dev forum.
As for bootloader, there is no way to check which you have, but as you installed Miui directly over 2.2 you should have the froyo bootloaders. CM7 and Miui were designed for froyo bootloaders. Some people say that GB bootloaders have better battery life but if you have GB bootloaders with CM7 you can't access you external SD card and other things may not work properly. I would suggest staying with froyo loaders for now and seeing how it goes.

but I don't know if it still JPP is the best radio as this was back in December. For people in the UK what would be the best overall radio?
can anyone answer me which is the best CM7 modem for ORANGE ROMANIA? tks
Try jvp or jpy, I'm on orange uk, insanity cm and they both work fine for me don't forget you need cm7 modem, there are 2 threads in dev for this

About bootloaders
I have a SGS GT-I9000, and following
directions from ROM kitchen, I installed a Froyo 2.2.1 version.
It's I9000XXJPY with 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #22 kernel
and it says Rom kitchen v11.1-ZSJPK.
I wanted to install a Gingerbread version from ROM kitchen as well, but it says I have to make sure I have at least JVH bootloaders. Ummm, do I ? And what to do so i could install a gingerbread to my SGS ?
I installed a 2.2.1 froyo also from ROM kitchen I9000XXJVO with 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #22, build number XWJSD, hoping i'll install newer bootloaders with it.
But, i had problems with messaging so i'm gonna have to revert to previous one.
Do i have proper bootloaders or not and what could happen if i tried to install Gingerbread and don't have proper bootloaders.
Thanks in advance
So I understand the i897 roms have to have i897 modems and vice versa with i9000. I've been searching for about an hour, but can only find that same answer I already just posted. My question is, can you use an i9000 kernel with an i897 rom? Since its an i897 rom, I would need to keep an i897 modem correct? Or would I use an i9000 modem due to the kernel. The reason I am asking is I would like to OC/UV. I liked the speed I got from Firefly, but not the battery life. So I went back to stock Froyo. I'm just going to stick with stock, root, remove bloatware, OC, and call it good. I just use it to play with when I'm bored in class and text/call, and stock does that just fine for me. Just want OC. TIA.
There are Froyo I897 kernels that support OC/UV, BLN, Voodoo, etc. I believe froyo is less picky and it is possible to mix and match i897 roms with i9000 kernels but that is not possible on GB. But as I said before you can use a I897 kernel if you just want OC/UV. (good kernel is Design Gear's Cognition 4.x.x kernel)
And since u r gonna use an i9000 kernel, u need to use an i9000 modem to avoid problems.
Kernel and modem need to be paired--i897 with i897 -- i9000 with i9000... (in order to not have issues)
