My Captivate has never been very good. It has a bad AT&T update server thing, it randomly presses the search button for no reason, its laggy and the internet doesn't always work, even if I have a good signal. I'm looking for another android phone, but not a Samsung. I want to be able to sell this
Captivate that is 2.2 and rooted w/ Evo Black Bar mod. It is in fairly good condition and I've had it for 3 months. And using the money I sold it for, for another phone. Right now i'm really looking into the HTC Inspire 4g, but should I wait awhile longer to see if a better phone comes out soon. I've always liked the HTC Sense UI, so I'd want it to be an HTC phone.
Thanks!
EDIT: Sorry I accidently put this in the wrong thread :\
even though this is the wrong thread i reccomend the inspire 4g coming out on sunday
Id say wait for the atix

My friend likes their evo shift, but I'll be honest I like my captivate better. I've been playing with the lcd density app. nothing like all your apps on one page. lol.

if you like htc wait! the inspire is great, no doubt but in 2011 there should be a dualcore phone coming out from htc. there should also be one coming out from samsung not that you are interested.
it's unfortunate that the search button presses itself but the internet thing sounds like either a rom/modem problem or an att problem. have you tried andromeda or the latest cognition based on the rogers release? there may be reasons not to go with samsung but if your reasons are isolated to one broken phone maybe you should exchange it and give it second chance. what ever your decision thanks for not starting a flame war with bitter complaints that have no relevance to anything like others have.
If it were me, I would look into getting it replaced with another one and seeing if that alleaviates some of the issues you are having. If not then I'd say Atrix or infuse..just my 2c
go with the motorola razr you'll never look back
Not only in the wrong section but I would swear I have seen a thread just like this one before lol j/k I will be moving this to Q and A when I hit my pc. My thoughts are with MWC coming up In less then a week it is far to early to say for sure. I personly would go with the HTC, known good hardware and decent updates. Moto known for locked bootloaders and ok updates. Samsung well we all know this story lol good gardware, updates, what are those? lol

I agree with zelendal. don't jump the gun. The few phones announced right now is the beginning. Thinking this is the year that quit a few smartphones will be released. And with all the latest and newest hardware plus software.

I would like to know one thing.... What devs are moving on to the evo? I can't, mostly due to the fact that I'm a broke-ass son of a *****, and I'm afraid we won't have any good devs left. So.. If you're a dev, are you moving on to the EVO?
So far ive seen more than 6 devs leaving the hero. I guess i should start learning to make roms and themes pretty soon. Funny thing is as ive stated before, the EVO is not the android savior phone and it will have issues at launch. Hell they don't even know if they can root the the thing yet, look at all the trouble our devs are having even cracking the 2.1 release.

There's a reason why people are considering it a "savior" type phone... for Sprint especially. Sprint doesn't have any "powerful" or full spec'ed phones like the Nexus one (T-Mobile, GSM carriers), or the Droid (Version). The Moment and Hero are the only two Android phones Sprint has, but they're not fully comparable to the Nexus one or Droid. Adding the Evo to its line up finally gets Sprint in the "Big boy club", now we'll officially have one of the most powerful/full featured/sought after phones in market.
This phone is a savior, not only for Sprint; but for Android all together. Look at all the hype it's getting and for good reason. ****, I don't care what Android phone gets the hype, as long as it takes it away from the ****ting/proprietary Apple products.
P.s. I bet you the Evo is rooted before it's official release; Modaco has rooted a couple of phones already this way. I wouldn't be surprised, especially with a phone like the Evo.

The EVO will be rooted, and it will be rooted before June is over. Stop posting it can't be rooted, that's false.
2.1 release isn't being handled like the original Hero release was or how the EVO release will be handled. We already have root status and 2.1 roms, so quite naturally the work on rooting the officially 2.1 is going slow. If somehow we were all magically updated to official 2.1, there would be a lot more progress on the root status of official 2.1 instead of trying to tinker with the 2.2 froyo port.
As for it not being a savior phone? It's the pure specs of the phone that are attracting most of us. 1ghz cpu, 1gb rom, 512mb RAM, not too mention many of it's features... so I fail to see how this is not a better Android/SenseUI capable phone?
Just wanted to point something out... if you click on the numbers in the poll it will tell you who voted and for yes or no.

Sad part is... Somebody go buy it!! And I'm going to be so jealous because that is an EASY $700 bucks..
I can see him being on a carrier other than Sprint... so he can't use the Evo as a phone.
I was going to pay full price to get the Evo since my upgrade isn't til October but I changed my mind and just going to wait. Good chance another phone will be out around that time that's just as good as the Evo if not better.

I think if sprint were smart (which appears to not be the case most of the time) then they would have launched the Nexus One AND the EVO. But I guess only having one will force them to give half way decent support to someone instead of crap support to everyone.
i am about to buy a smartphone (for the first time since my dumbphone SE W595)
and i want something perfect that'll stay with me like 2 years or so
i checked all of the new phones (Desire + n1 + Galaxy S and millions!) and honestly even with all these teachy stuff and zippy processor .. i didn't like a phone more than the Milestone
Big screen + QWERTY keyboard + pretty good camera for a go-go price !
but .. it was released on the end of 2009 and have a 550MHz (though it can be overclocked anytime) and that locked bootloader (ugh!)
wat i want on a phone is 1-watch movies & videos , 2-loading my almost 5500 set of music in it 3- hardcore 3D gaming , 4-good camera , 5-QWERTY (regular teenager stuff) and Android !
is it really the right phone for me or i should wait for something better (e.g Milestone 2?) (as the international Droid 2) ?
Regards , Mike
I would wait, the milestone has been out for a while now and there should be some new models coming out soon. If I were you I would wait for a new qwerty android phone to be released.
I would also wait. The droid does sound like the perfect phone for you, but the thing is, all the stuff you really look forward to doing kills your battery. I have a rooted droid clocked at 1ghz. Battery life really isn't that great, but overall i sincerely love the phone.
I would wait, too...I have the Milestone, is a really great phone (as you said, big screen+QWERTY is just perfect) but buying it now is pointless, in my opinion. I would suggest to wait for new devices similar to the Milestone to come out and then make a choose.
And the camera isn't that great, really.
Thanks everyone
.. is there any great phones (or leaks) with QWERTYs in the next few weeks which are non-Motorola ? i mean is there any leaks ? (other than that ugly HTC Vision) ?
damn i wish we had a GSM version of HTC Incredible .. it's a perfect phone (only missing a keyboard though)
somebody told me girlfriends are like mobile phones, you only wish for a new and better one, as to what you have.
so there's nothing new about your dilemma.i'd suggest you go for it, because new would come but then it's price will delay or postpone you a prized possession. secondly, nowadays a mobile phone is more worthy if it it's most popular in hacking community, like Xperia X1, in my sane mind i'd never suggest this phone to anyone, but imagine ubuntu and android along with Winmo, the phone is a must have. And my dearest SE P1i.
Go for it, you'd never regret a moment of it am already looking for Xperia X1 and Milestone (second or even third hand).
yeah , your right .. but the thing is .. back in 2008 (when i only knew dumbphones and smartphones prices were a blast) i bought my beloved and now stolen SE w595 .. just a couple a days later , Here Comes SE w902 & samsung i8510 .. a better camera + bigger screen .. stuff
Honestly i felt like my new w595 was turned into bull****! i dont want that to happen next if i buy a milestone
but when i think about it .. it was out for a year .. is there really something new coming ? all the good damn phones comes to the US (droid incredible , samsung epic 4G) while leaving us lay in the dust
everytime i try to convinve myself to buy the milestone by saying (i'm just a teenager .. why would i need a 1GHz CPU and stuff like that ?) but honestly i just can't help it .. for god's sake the galaxy spica is faster than that !
beside that locked bootloader .. when i thought about it for like 2 minutes i say what's the joy having an android when you can't root it/install ROMs ? because back in the days when i had the w595 i used to change themes & flash menus like a maniac !
i've decided to wait for a non-Motorola device , i've taken myself a hour to think about it .. that's my decision .. Thanks everyone !
I literally just picked up the Milestone on Telus two days ago, and don't regret it. It's pretty sweet, and I don't see the Droid X or the Incredible coming (I assume you're in Canada, as you're looking at the Milestone..) any time soon up here.
With the customization and rooting available, it's a pretty sweet phone.
Just me though. Good luck with picking a phone.
The driod 2 is released any day now but I wonder how long we have to wait for a milestone 2
Edit: I bought my Milestone 2 weeks ago. And I love it.
it will outdated in term of operating system, currently we only get android 2.1 which everybody already has 2.2
and next time 3.0 released we can only bite our nail ^^
it will be soon!
Hi guys, actually i've more or less pretty decided to get the milestone already due to it's nice form factor and android, also pretty much i'd like to have a qwerty keyboard for a change.
I'm currently rocking a HD2, and i don't intend to sell it yet. But was interested in android after running froyo 2.2 and sense desire build on it. So i was like pretty much wanting to get an adroid device to play with and see how it goes. No suitable options in the marketplace for nexus 1 and it's way over my budget, i reckon i can get a milestone (brand new) over here in sg for around 550 Singapore Dollars, so i thought i get it! (TODAY, LOL)
So i thought i'd pop by xda for trusted opinions and rooting possibilities, and i'm faced with little support for the milestone as compared to the crazy HD2 forum, LOL. So i'm wondering is it possible to root my milestone? And what do you guys mean by bootloader locked? And why? Pardon me as i'm pretty new to android, had a g1 in the past, but didn't play much with it and sold it, now i'm back! Haha.
I'd appreciate any links to other sites for help and more info and prolly more support than what we're getting here? If you feel uneasy to post, you could pm me. Thanks!!
Any issues i must take note of with buying milestone? Since i read some had wifi and baseband issues, D-pad down button is bad etc. LOL. And the droid's back cover is loose, not sure about the milestone though. Plus is there really a huge difference in droid and milestone when it comes to development/rooting/flashing roms etc.?
The only difference i know of currently is one's CDMA the other's GSM and the droid doesn't support multi-touch natively until the updated the software as well as the droid has got fm radio?
Oh ya, there's no wireless teethering on milestone? Meaning my laptop uses my phone's network?!
Appreciate all advice!!
Sorry for uber long posts!

Man, it's really lacking in support for milestone over here at xda, or there's nothing to support at all? LOL. For the first time, i'm a little disappointed with xda. Hahahaha, i hope people could point me in the right direction for milestone news and tips etc. Anyways, heading to get it now!!
Quick answers:
- You can root the phone, as in, have access to modify the system at root level.
- A locked bootloader means you can't use any other kernels except those signed by Motorola themselves. We're all hoping for methods like 2ndboot and kexec to help us out here
- You can tether via USB,WiFi, or Bluetooth.
i have a Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 with windows mobile.. I originally wanted the Milestone but since i could get the X1 for half the price of the Milestone i decided to get it. I am now in the process of selling the X1 and getting the Milestone (probably next week)

Thanks. I went ahead and get it anyway. Haha. I'm hoping for more support and some flashing goodness soon! Plus 2.2 froyo!! Some issues or concerns i found so far. I realised that the device gets hot pretty easily and not normal kind of heat, rather at the area below the camera at the back when holding landscape. And in gmail app, you can never empty your trash permanently. This kinda sucks, as the trash always restore.

where did you get it for 550? I was at a starhub shop the other day and it wasn't even close to 550.
If you don't want to wait, there's always the Samsung Epic 4G or Galaxy S Pro, whatever it is called in your region. If you don't mind that there is no camera flash.

Are those phones even out yet ? Would you be able to install custom ROMs for them in the future?
The milestone looks better in my opinion.. (physically) but seeing how its got a locked bootloader... im afraid of buying a phone (with so many options at this day) that could be already stuck on its final OS version.
If only the Xperia X10 had a physical keyboard (i dont like the mini pro version) id probably buy it. I want an android phone with a physical keyboard not only for texting but also for emulators and the milestone seems the way to go ... as its about $420 too. (amazon)
I'm in the same boat as some of you. A former Xperia X1 user who got tired of flashing with ROMs that aren't stable and sluggish. I don't want to get an official ATT phone cause I am on the MediaNet unlimited plan and I like to tether to my laptop. I also like having a QWERTY keyboard and been wanting to try Andriod OS. Some questions:
1) What specifics should I look for to ensure I'm getting the Telus version of DROID and unlocked for AT&T to ensure 3G?
2) I saw recent news that there is no official support for Tethering or wifi router mode on DROID, but are there apps (even the Xperia X1 did).
3) Can anyone tell from just what's listed on Overstock and Amazon whether those phones will work on ATT 3G? Many thanks.
I already sold my X1, been using my old Samsung BLackjack 2....need new phone...SOON!
I qualify for an upgrade next week. I'm stoked. Android has gotten better release after release--the hardware has become rate limiting, I'm ready for a new phone.
What do I get next?
My impressions are that the Samsung Epic is technically a better phone than the Evo 4G but that because it so new that there's much less software development for it at the moment. I enjoy CM6 and have been flashing the nightlies every few days. With Epic, I'd be stuck with 2.1. Will the Epic catch up in development?

I used both the Evo and the Epic and the Evo is a superior phone. Heres why, the community for the evo is way bigger and it has the best devs... guys like Cyanogen, Sterickson and other are evo users and activaley particapate in the forums there. The phone is fast and performs better on every test I've done on both. There is way more development for the Evo. Its 50$ cheaper. Froyo Sense, and a ton of custom mods, all the great devs and theme from here are now in the Evo forums.
I almost got the Epic I like Samsung phones but I was more partial to the verizon epic as I don;t need to physical qwerty. Best way to see what you want is go down to best buy and use them download some apps play around thats what I did and ended up with the Evo, only thing I miss is the track ball but got use to not having it very quickly.
If you liked the Hero then you'll love the Evo.
When im able to upgrade, 12/12/10, im going to get an epic 4G! I did a lot of resarch on it and it seems like a great phone.

I'll go to Best Buy to check them out. Thanks for confirming what I am thinking. I will likely get the Evo. Both seem to be great phones. If I were less addicted to the pace of development, I could be happy with the Epic. They are still waiting for Froyo...
If you have small hands, get the Epic because it's smaller than the Evo.
They are both 4G, but a plus on the Epic is that it has a physical keyboard, so you might want to try that out.
It's your descison, so you should make sure you get the one you want
Sent from my HTC hero running froyo!
Are you abandoning the Hero? within a month ill bet we have a working Froyo running on it, with Sense!
I'd at least wait until the Christmas phones come out and see if anything with that sweet 1.5ghz processor is coming out yet. I felt like an idiot when I upgraded to a Hero 3 months before the EVO came out...if I had just been a little more patient I'd have a much better phone. Then again, that would also have meant 3 more months of broken sliders and ****ty Samsung construction, so I guess it's a fair trade. With Sprint Premium you get up grades every 12 months so it doesn't really matter anymore...just pay your bill on time
Also, see the HTC Knight on XDA's main page. Looks like it's coming out for Sprint and should be an awesome deal. When buying technology that moves this fast it's always better to do some research and wait for a release rather than just buy the best thing out there for "right now."
Im waiting till next christmas in 2011 and see whts out then.
I'm actually due for an upgrade tomorrow but I will be waiting for the HTC Knight / Speedy which has a release date in the beginning of January. I do not want a 4G phone as I am in the middle of nowhere and will be prolly be the last to get 4G coverage. That's as long as I can wait unless I hear something about nvidia's tegra2 chip then I guess ill have to wait for that.

Ive had an update since may, but have been holding out to see whats next. Dont have 4g where I'm at, so an evo or epic plus $10 a month doesn't make much sense for me personally...plus I love these hero forums too much to leave.

I currently own a Nexus S and love it. I just wanted to get your opinions on The G2X and how it may compare to the NS. Aside from lacking gingerbread, what other potential downsides am i looking at? What are the upsides? I'm just looking for constructive feedback. No Flame throwing

The Nexus S beats it in every department except video recording, so its up to you what you deem important
Nexus S is fast, amazing screen and housing which make the phone when off look like a black slab of coal, also when the phone is on the blacks stay that colour, so you dont know where the screen starts and finishes...
The Nexus S is the real deal mate, i cant see anything living up to its quality, except for maybe the SGSII
JD
Im having the same problem. But im also wondering between my Nexus s, the new T-Mobile G2X and upcoming HTC Pyramid.
My opinion.
Nexus s - Love this phone, have nothing bad to say, never had all the issues everyone was having (rebooting).
T-Mobile G2X - Reviews say the phone is sluggish for a phone with dual core, but it might be due to the custom UI. The G2X comes with stock gingerbread which is a plus but how how easy will this be to developers to root and install custom rom. Have never had a LG phone and dont know how the quality is.
HTC Pyramid - Still needs to be released but the spec looks amazing and I love HTC quality (nexus one). Recently HTC had not been too nice to devs. with G2 and Thunderbolt.
Wait til all the phone get released and then see what happens, see what fits for me.
nexus s is the real deal....unless yours is with tmobile....then in 2 years...its useless (unless you enjoy using a smartphone for 2g)
thats just a techinicality, most of us will move on by then, but the gx2 needs some more time before we can dive into it. but its dual core and 4g, cant really hate on that. ofcourse battery life can be a good fight (im on 22hrs and 30minutes on my nexus s right now and its still at 15%)
amoled screen is another thing...the fact that it doesnt have gingerbread is not abig deal at all, from what i read this is reaallly stock android with the exception of some apps, not skins or UI

The Pyramid is the one that I'm waiting to see more about.
Yeah i hope we are able to see some hands-on vids today. I agree that only time will tell if its a winner or not. Those specs do make it seem like a beast of a phone though, and stock android has a significant place in my heart.

I definitely would not buy anything less that a screen with AMOLED. I was a HTC fanatic, i owned the HTC Desire, Nexus One, Desire Z (G2) and the HD. But once you convert to Samsung you never look back, i could never have a SLCD screen again(greyish blacks yuk)...
But i do miss Sense sometimes, and i know that's a contentious issue in this forum as there are so many Sense haters here, but i like having the choice to mix up my ROM's by having stock for a few months then Sense for a few months.. With the Nexus S your pretty much restricted to stock or MIUI, But thank god for the MIUI release, its invigorated the dev forum. Lots of kernels and same-ish ROM's, thank god we have something new to play with

I used to feel the same way when I had my Epic 4G. I thought I could put up with anything for a SAMOLED but then I started playing with an Evo. Sure, the screen as quite as brilliant but a great screen does not a device make. I've made my opinion on Sense clear but I won't dis on someone else's enjoyment of it (doesn't mean I don't get tired of seeing new threads pop up asking for it). The only thing that would really make me not want to get a Pyramid is if the bootloader is as locked down as the Thunderbolt but something tells me that was something Verizon wanted but that is a personal hunch supported by absolutely no evidence so don't quote me on it. I could easily give up the SAMOLED, hell it makes me feel more comfortable running bright themes and I think it helps devs want to make them.
Anyone concerned with the issues of these phones not being future proof. These phones not working once att get a hold of tmobile.

That's not 100% true. They will work fine, you just won't get 3G.

That's most likely a year or more from now. By then you'd have replaced your phone anyways.

I wouldn't say its a big issue. I'm usually on wifi. Sure EDGE sucks but its better than nothing and it is still completely functional.
Hardware aside... doesn't anyone else find this phone to be massively ugly?

That dead space where the capacitive buttons are just looks way too 1990's to me...

i dont find it ugly at all.. just the bottom of the phone is a little bit exaggerated and could of added more screen size rather than having blank spots; probably something internal of the phone hardware that prevented that or they didnt want to overextend the screen size

Well... it looks snappy, but it's quite obvious the video is sped up. I know for a fact people's fingers don't move like that, all jittery lol. And if it's really using stock android, that stock launcher should animate just like our stock launcher, and it's way too fast in the video (opening the app drawer etc).
Had a question for those who used to own Palm pres and rooted them.
As of now how would you compare the Palm Pre (rooted of course) to that of a rooted Hero (say mine, AOSP 2.3.3)
Does the palm offer anything better than the hero does. Just wondering because a guy on C-list is selling his palm for cheap and was wondering if it would be worth the time to maybe switch up phones.
If i'm in the wrong thread sorry, if this offends people because its not directly a Android HeroC question, sorry again. Just wanted to ask
i have no first hand knowledge..but better? perhaps the cpu and the ability to use a touchstone..and a slide out portrait keyboard, which i do know a lot of people that liked that design.
what's not better? probably development for webOS as compared to Android...i'd imagine you can still find more WinMo 6.5 apps than you can webOS, as I never see anyone with Pres or Pixis. Everyone owns Android phones and iphones.
just my $.02
The palm is way smoother and faster, once you overclock it. I'm running screenstate 500/800 and its great. Battery life is pretty good too. Beyond that, I prefer android. There are way more and better apps. Also, tethering on the pre is harder to achieve and is a much slower connection, fwiw. Could be because I haven't figured out how to update radio/profile/prl on the pre.

Good to know
Thanks for the response. Reason i'm asking is i'd just like a change of phone for now and i'd rather not do a true upgrade, but instead maybe move to a phone that was what i was trying to decide on when i first got my upgrade last year.
Again thanks for the responses.

Be careful though, activating an "old" phone is considered an "upgrade" to Sprint, so they will charge you the new $10 premium data charge that comes with activating a smartphone.
From my Gingerbread Hero.

don't that just suck! did it to me when switching to a used hero from a hero!
man i wish we wouldve got that webos port to work awhile back until sandix or whatever that douchebags name was ruined it for everybody, that wouldve have been the coolest thing ever.
The Hero is a great phone ONCE it is rooted. If you don't have the Hero rooted it's basically a pile of crap. I'd pick the Hero(rooted) over a palm pre(rooted) any day.
And with AOSP developing an incredible rom for the Hero, it's a nobrainer.
Nice input guys
Yeah for clarification I do have a rooted hero (aosp 2.3.3) its just i'd like something thats more integrated. I liked, when looking at the pre before, how it integrated all my contacts honestly a lot better. I like having my google account synced to everything, but I've had times where switching roms and stuff i lose important contacts and it sucks.
Just trying to find a different scenery i guess since sprints pretty much put hero's in the dump.
Also as a little note i hate how we're so limited with our phones. Can't play really any games, barely any ROMs that I'd like to try but cant because of our hardware, etc...
Anyways i'm rambling... Take it easy guys

You're not going to get this answer from many people, but the best, most stable firmware in terms of integration is the stock, up-to-date firmware (all OTA updates installed). There were issues when the Hero first received 2.1, but that was almost a year ago. They have released several OTA updates since then, and as far as I know they ironed out any major outstanding issues.
Sure, it's not the latest and greatest, but it's stable. And HTC Sense does have good integration features. I switch back to it from time to time, and the only thing that really disappoints me about it is not being able to download the latest versions of every app due to API differences. But all intended features work as designed, including making phone calls. And there are Sense features that still haven't made their way into other ROM images or apps.
