Do any other Streak 7 owners have this problem also?
To reproduce the problem:
Run from an area with good signal coverage (home/office)
into Subway (NYC Subway) where you find no signal.
Inside the subway, when you turn on the screen (as many people will do to kill time), the data connection will of course, finds no signal.
Then when you come out of subway again, in an open area where signals are all good, Streak 7 cannot establish a proper data connection while showing perfect full bar signal strength..
Only restart can restore the data connection. Turning on/off airplane mode wont help....
Is it just my configuration or a bug in streak 7?
I go from the street level to the red line subway in chicago but i lose 3g and hop onto 2g. I lose signal a few times until i get back in the elevated tracks and gain 3g. Not sure if it helps you but i don't have a problem with data connection in that situation. Granted, data is mostly worthless when the train is moving between stations.
Thanks so much!
I am continuing monitoring what combination will create problem.
Believe or not I have observed 3 times such issues witin the past 7 days... Hopefully they were only due to some apps, not the system defects.
sighs...
Right at the moment when I decided to keep and love this streak 7, this bug came to life again...
Today I used the streak 7 in NYC subway, and the signal bar, of course, displayed "4 grey bars with a red cross" which means no signal.
And when I get back home, it STILL DISPLAY THE SAME THING. that is after coming out of subway for 10 mins +.
Then I switched on airplane mode and switch off again, the signal bar display is
full signal, but without the 3G/4G sign , and I tried apps, all reporting no data connection.
Only solution is to restart it.
Can I figure it somewhere in kernel or software apps?
If not, I may really need to return it with 15 days of purchase =(
Similar situation happened today. My Streak showed 4g signal with full bars, tried to open a app it told me i had no internet connection. Once i closed the app the 4g signal flashed then everything was up and running.
Just wanted to let you guys know that I have had a similar issue with my Droid Incredible. If it fails to get a data signal while attempting a background sync, it will actually restart. My solution has been to put the DInc in airplane mode before I enter the subway, and then remove airplane mode when I leave. Not real a big issue, since it takes about 2 seconds to go into airplane mode (& out of it).

This problem barely happens to me now.
I just want to make sure it is not a hardware problem. As long as there is a "soft" solution to it, I am fine. =)

I searched through this forum and saw a few threads but they were a little different than what I keep coming up with. I was wondering if anyone else is having this issue. Every once in a while my Note will switch over to Emergency Calls Only mode. If I go and enable airplane mode then disable airplane mode my connections will reset and everything will come back. I don't know if this is related to the SIM card, or the SIM slot on the phone. I feel like this is a software related issue. Generally this only seems to happen at work or when I'm in the basement for a long time. It's as if the phone is getting No Signal or a very weak signal for an extended amount of time and then finally switches to Emergency Calls Only mode, but doesn't come back. Also sometimes it will go into this mode and most things won't work, but for some reason the Facebook app can still access the Data Connection. I'll go to status sometimes and it will show Mobile Network State as Connected where Service State will say out of service or something to that extent. I even had Mobile network type showing as HSPA
Anyone else encountered this issue?
I am having the same issue, and this is driving me nuts! Usually it happens when I turn on wifi for a long while when my phone in screen sleeping mode. How to fix? not wanna restore my Note again as I did this step for 3 times already because of this issue.

It may be a tower issue i go in some areas that show full signal but shows that its emegency calls only down load an app called reception it will tell you if there are other towers nearby and if they have good signals

i've been facing the same issue since past 4 weeks. after switching over from stunner ics aokp rom to stock gb and now my phone displays no signal (bars) at all.. however this is only for a while and i do get reception after 10 mins or so.. now i'm on official ics and still face the same issue..!!?
same issue here, its getting frustrating i'm missing business calls because of this!
I had it over a few days on GB too, I tried reseating the SIM slot and it sort of fixed itself.
I am not sure whether that helped or a shutdown + battery pull is the savior.

Hi.
I've recently started having lots of difficulty when moving out of range of my home's wireless signal in the phone picking up and connecting to the Mobile Data network.
Specifically:
1) Run phone for ages at home using wireless
2) Walk out of house, out of range. Wireless connection goes unconneced
3) Wait for Mobile Network to connect, have at least 3 bars of signal - fails, no E/G/H Sign, Network indicator stays white ( So far waited up to 3 hours)
4) Reboot Phone, instant Mobile Network Connection @ H
Things I have tried:
1) Turning Wireless off before leaving range of wi-fi, sometimes this works ( circa 1 in 20)
2) Turning Phone to Airplane Mode & Back - sometimes this works ( circa 1 in 15 ).
Turning Airplane mode on can take about 4 minutes, as though something is waiting for a closure timeout. Normally, this takes about 5 seconds.
3) Phone calls are intermittant during this time - sometimes I can make them, sometimes i can't.
4) While in range, turn phone off/on again so a "clean" boot, then walk out of range. No affect on ability to reconnect.
Check Phone Status under About Phone, the Mobile Network States reports "Not Connected"
It's really annoying, as I want to use the phone to during breakfast to check the latest traffic information and map updates from Google Maps before I leave home, then get in the car and go, not reboot the phone.
Has anyone else suffered a similar problem?
Phone Specifics:
Motorola Razr I XT890
Android 4.1.2 Stock
T-Mobile
Is there some investigative
Thanks!
I've had exactly the same issue on/off for weeks.
Not found a reason/fix for it yet, although I've been loath to do a full wipe with how busy I am atm.

Hmm.
At least we know we are not in the same boat, and a recent forum query on Engagdet highlighted others.
I've tried to capture a bug report to give me some logs to look at, but that's not working at the moment either !
Thinking it might be an "Always On" app related problem such as sykpe or amazon mp3 :S
I don't know why, but this is a consistent problem and it's getting annoying. I will only have bars, but no wifi or internet connection. This just randomly happens and I don't know what triggers it.
I have to turn airplane mode on and off to fix the problem. Is there something that is causing this?

This doesn't really help.
What happens is data and wifi disappear and if I hit wifi it won't turn on. I have to turn airplane mode on and off and it starts working again.

I have had the same thing happen, but only once or twice,I chalked it up to my home WiFi threw Comcast ,I've been having major problems with my Comcast modem dropping WiFi or to slow of a connection, think I have to replace the modem just been to lazy, but I have the smart network switch on in my phones wifi settings so I thought maybe from the signals switching so much it froze or something, but yea it did same thing I had no lte or 4G next to my carrier signal, the wifi was not allowing me to turn it on,or scan for networks, wasn't even showing any so I did the same thing hit the airplane toggle and it came back.

Sorry i have no others solution for it.
I just posted a thread about the EXACT SAME issue. It only seems to happen overnight, but when I wake up in the morning my wifi has been turned off and my 4G LTE isn't working. When I try and toggle wifi back on it gets stuck and never reconnects/turns on. My solution has been to restart the phone.
I'm thinking since this seems like a rare problem, that this is a device-specific issue. I'm going to try and exchange mine this weekend due to this problem and hopefully get a properly functioning GS5 instead.

Have the same issue (made a post about it already in this forum). Usually happens when there is a large fluctuation in signal. Grocery store where I get no service results in no service when I leave the store as well. Have to cycle airplane mode like you described.
WiFi hasn't done it yet.
Another forum member suggested it may happen if using an older style SIM, which I am (from my S3). I haven't been up to change it yet. What SIM are you guys using?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2744472
I typically have this happen when I'm at home at night, while my phone is plugged in and on wifi. Just disconnects at some point overnight.
I'm using a brand new SIM provided by AT&T when I upgraded in store.
Very strange issue and is random. For instance, it didn't happen overnight last night.

My S5 just started dropping data randomly and causing my battery to drain with almost no usage... I tested using Skype in a good 4G LTE area and will start out with 4 bars and the 4G LTE icon but as soon as I try to initialize a test video call over Skype the signal immediately drops to either no bars at 4G or it will go straight to E!? I haven't had this issue in a long time and it just suddenly started. At first I figured maybe they lost a tower but now this is going on almost a full week. I've got unlimited Data so I know that's not the issue, it has a brand new SIM... I'm going to AT&T and see if they have an answer or if they'll swap it out. Annoying!
Also annoying that sending a simple text will fail... ugh no root and now no data! :what::banghead:

I've had this happen several times, but only at my work. Reception is poor at my office, and the company WiFi requires browser-based login each hour, which I switch to many times a day.
The phone basically stops using all radios EXCEPT bluetooth, showing a circle with a line through it. I've been rebooting the phone to restore connectivity, but will try toggling airplane mode next time. I haven't noted any strange battery drain.
I haven't seen this issue when wifi is disabled.
I didn't notice it locked up a few days ago and drove home where cell reception is very good. The phone didn't recover until I rebooted it.
I have a brand new SIM from ATT and use a Gear 2 (which is greatness, btw)
I've done the following:
1. disabled the damn ATT hotspot app
2. Disabled/enabled the Wifi connection check setting
3. Did a full factory reset
This is getting close to a deal breaker for me.
As an update...
I have this issue basically every work day with the aforementioned environmental variables
Today, I:
Disabled Bluetooth (left the gear at home)
Disabled wireless
Switched radio to 'LTE/GSM/CDMA Auto' with instructions in this thread
The radios haven't locked up and reception is much better.
I'll try leaving WiFi/BT on and use my Gear again next week.
For anyone who is still interested, changing the modem setting seems to have resolved the problem for me. It also improved connectivity in weak areas a good deal.
Unfortunately you must enter the key sequence to toggle the radio each time the phone is restarted.
So I am using a Nexus 6 on the Latest Tmo build (28E?) of Stock Rom and Stock Kernel Rooted, Encrypted.
Since the update that enabled wifi-calling for the N6 I have taken to setting my phone to airplane mode and turning on Wifi only to save battery since the signal at my house bounces back and forth from LTE to 3G and that murders my battery. Most of the time the signal strength graph shows blank and battery app correctly shows the cellular radios as having no on time. However, after being idle for a while (it would seem) the graph begins to show the signal strength as Red (no signal) and the cellular standby shows up in battery usage with the radios as being on (with no signal) and "active for a few seconds". Toggling airplane mode on and off usually restores them to showing up as off. Other times I never notice and it stays on for a few hours and goes back off on it's own. My main concern is that it seems to be activating the radio on it's own, my minor concern would be that my battery monitor app shows that it's using the battery. What could be causing this? I don't think it's a reporting glitch, because it shows up in both the system battery panel and a 3rd party one. If anyone has any thoughts or could point me towards a tool that could help me figure out what's turning on the radio when it's supposed to be off, please let me know. I've included photos from today showing what I'm talking about, the phone has been in airplane mode the whole time in these photos.
Thanks so much!
Kev
I think your issue is one of the reason why I cannot get Wifi Calling working at all. No matter what I do, my phone is holding onto a cellular network. Still trying to figure this out.

The best I can tell, "Android OS" is the only thing that shows any mobile packets sent or received so it's got to be a system thing.
If you have the myT-mobile app installed try uninstalling it I found that app totally screwed with my Nexus 6, turning WiFi on when I had no desire to use it.

Unfortunately that's not the fix. I don't have that app installed. Tmo is sending me a new SIM as I am also randomly having Wifi calling drop in and out even while my wifi is connected.
Does anyone know any app that would let me see specifically what app is engaging the mobile radio?
Airplane mode disables all outbound communications however inbound ones are still discoverable.

... I just joined to see why is my Nexus 6 receiving calls in airplane mode (and Wifi off...). It's a recurrent problem... everytime there's an update I have this issue...
I have this strange issue that has been with me almost since the beginning. I haven't been able to trace when it happens, but it now seems almost 100% of the time.
I only have WiFi in the house (wifi6, if it matters). If I go out, I only have 4G (I left only 4G and disabled 5G). I have no data until I put the phone into airplane mode and back, or I disable and re-enable mobile data.
Same thing when I go back in the house: no data until I disable and re-enable WiFi.
I've disabled the option for 'always-on mobile data' or similar, it's quite a battery drain if there's no cell signal.
Seems like a very strange bug, I don't have this with any of my other phones.
So you have both WiFi and 4G enabled and they don't switch seamlessly?
Exactly. I always have to restart each one of them, usually by toggling airplane mode. Was wondering if anyone else ran into this issue.
Ok this really is strange. There are 2(!) different toggles to enable data switching between WiFi and 4G, but for me it works flawlessly without them! As soon as I get out of my home WiFi range, 4G kicks in, and when I get in range again, the phone connects to my WiFi...
Hi, i have this problem too but it's not always.
I have a wifi 6 router too.
I also have problems switching from wifi to 4g. Need to toggle airplane mode on/off. 5g deactivated. No wifi 6 here.
I always assumed my vpn is causing problems during the switch to 4g. But hearing others have the same problem i would assume its zenfone problem.
I never had any issues in this area with my ZF8. With the option to have cellular always on I could walk out of my WiFi zone during a video call and no drop or short pause would appear.
With this off the network need a few second to work, and some apps need to be refreshed/restarted to gain connection. Never needed to toggle connection for this to work.
Maybe a reset would be enough or check for updates.
Ah, exactly! It does not necesarily need a network restart, but some apps just lose connection for a while, which can be from a few seconds to >1h. Which is even more weird as the icons are showing full connectivity. I would go out of the house, do stuff, come back later and I would only get the notifications when I'm back inside the house.
Rarely I had the connection drop completely (no signal) when switching, but I haven't noticed this happening since the last update.
