This memory card has been used in my Nexus One Android running Froyo. I was using the phone last night (specifically FourSquare) and it froze up, I'm not sure if it was writing something to the micro sd but I removed the battery to restart the phone. When it restarted it said "checking memory card for errors", but after waiting for ten minutes nothing was recognized and I restarted it again, this time removing the sd card. Fast forward a few hours. I tried repeatedly different methods to get the phone to recognize it and finally gave up. I put an older memory card in the phone which worked just fine.
I have a usb micro sd reader and plugged it in to the mac. Usually iPhoto pops up but nothing happened. I ran disk utility to see if the memory card could be recognized and still nothing. I tried many free software programs but they all require the memory card to at least be recognized, which mine is not. Any Ideas? I've ran out of them. I just want a few pictures and a video but if thats not possible at least a way to reformat sd card for future use.
Cliffnotes: Card corrupted by android phone, no longer recognized by phone or mac os, tried several sd recovery programs to no avail, I just want the pics!
Sounds like it's not corrupted, it just died. Sorry dude. Time for a new card.
Had my 8 gig die the other night. Mine is recognized when I put it in my laptop but when ok try to copy any file, it can't access. It does see all of then though. I've been trying some recovery software but haven't had any luck so far.

Thanks. You're probably right. I guess this is where the iPhone has an advantage over us Android users. Permanent on board storage.

So if that storage goes out, you replace the whole phone. Sounds like quite the advantage...

Ok I found a half satisfying solution. The sd card reader has a lock switch. When I click lock I am able to read everything, thus letting me copy it to my computer. I guess putting it in lock mode makes everything read only. The card is still dead, imo. No way to reformat it in this mode and removing the lock switch only reverts to my prior problem.

That means your card is dead. When a flash card dies, it cannot be written anymore, but it can still be read from because the data is still there, it's flash memory so its nonvolatile. By forcing it to read only mode, you should be able to recover your data, like you just did.
Awesome suggestion on setting to read only. It worked for me too. I'm happy to at least get the stuff off it, even if it's dead.
I got a brand new SGS. It was one of the new models that got replaced from the disfunctional 3 button combo phone that was in canada (i9000m)
The GPS and stuff works perfectly too. So I'm happy.
But I have to reboot my phone like 5-10 times a day because the SD card goes missing (can't use camera etc. says not enough memory)
Anyone know the fix to this ? Why does it disappear ?
I haven't rooted or done anything to it -- it's vanilla right out the box.
Your issue is not new to me. I also had this problem, but the only thing I could do was to pull my sd off and reinserting it, regardless of the uncountable reboots. I got my phone in July and since then it happened about two or three times, but from five to ten times *a day* is way too much.
Try with another sd card (it may be defective). If it's still bugging you, I'm afraid the best option would be to give it back to the shop to send it for warranty repair (or immediately getting a new one, depending on the shop).
Please, let me know how it ends.

I just found something out
when i plug in the USB cord - the SD card goes missing
i.e. i can see stuff in gallery but when i plug in USB cord and go to gallery it says no sd card detected
is this normal ??????

First, this thread should not be in the development subforum.
Second, to answer your question, once you connected your phone to the computer, you will not be able to access both your internal and external sd card. My advice is that you go download and rtfm.
Go to the Q&A section, and you will be able to learn more.
As we know, the Nook Color's SD slot will always take first boot priority. I'm in a situation where even booting via SD through known methods are not working.
The purpose of this thread is to:
1) Share with others who are in this similar situation, on methods which may result in the recovery of their own devices
2) Keep this discussion healthy so one day, I will be able to restore my own bricked device which I'm still striving hard to.

IMPORTANT: If you have a bricked device I need to emphasize on searching and reading very carefully what others have shared here in both General and in Development. This is a fundamental requirement, as with the ability to follow instructions and not panic by creating unnecessary threads. This will only make things harder to find, so thank you in advance for not doing that.

Anyway, in severe bricking cases where hardware is not at fault, many of the solutions to restore the NC begins with either:
1) Booting to CWR-SD via uSD
2) Booting to a rom i.e. Nookie Froyo via uSD
3) Having ADB access, if available
Till date I am not sure why the SD-loaded programs do not work for me, and here are the symptoms:
1) Without SD inserted, the standard BN splash appears, 'Welcome to the Future of Reading', then gets stuck there till powered down. Needless to say, the 8-times reset method doesn't work.
2) With SD inserted, the 'LOADING' screen will splash, then screen blacks out with device still powered on . You will know that the device is still running as you need to hold power down for around 20 secs before you're able to power it back up again. I call this the 'Black Screen of Death'.

To get your device up and running, try the following:
0) Do not panic. As long there's no hardware failure there will always be a solution. Look at me, thing's still a damn brick and yet here I am, still hopeful
1) Perform a search, read the useful threads created by the above members first. This thread is related only to failed SD-booting.
Once you've done that, prepare your recovery options with these in mind. The elimination process is part and parcel of problem-solving. In no particular order:
2) Sometimes, try powering on your device by connecting the USB cable from your PC or A/C source, instead of using the Power button.
3) Use only the original USB cable that came with your device.
4) Use the back USB ports of your PC, instead of the fronts as they may provide more consistent power and connection to your device. Try to avoid using USB hubs as they may not distribute the required power equally/properly.
5) Try switching to different USB ports, some may be hardware-gimped due to wear-and-tear.
6) Try to attempt the recovery on another Win, Mac or Linux computer. At least eliminate further possibilities of environmental hardware error.
7) Try charging the battery full.
8) Or, try discharging the battery completely, by leaving the device in BSOD state overnight until you get a message saying your device can't boot due to insufficient power when switched on. Once you are in this state, keep booting the device up until the screen does not appear. Then, recharge it back to full to see if the OS returns to stock (I am sceptical of this, but this was what others advised).
9) Try different SD cards. The device could be picky. Variety should be by class-type, brand, SDHC or non-SDHC. It's been discussed that faster cards perform better, as with more reknowned brands. Also, 16GB cards reportedly do not run Froyo (do read more by searching).
10) When loading anything via SD (CWR, roms), try different button combinations i.e. power + n + up, power + n, etc.
11) And/or, hold power for various timed-presses i.e. >30 / 45 / 60 seconds. Some members report CWR booting up after these periods, or even longer.
Note: funnily I tried holding power + n + up for > 60 seconds and the 'LOADING' screen just stays frozen. Still doesn't work, and I didn't get any ADB access.
12) Try formatting the card completely with native Win/Linux tools, EASEUS Partition Master or SDFormatter before each burn.
13) Try using both Win32DiskImager and WinImage, or dd-ing in Linux (search for more instructions). If you have Linux, you can check to see if the SD's /boot partition is indeed bootable or not.
14) For ADB access, try to unregister your hardware (go to Start > Run > devmgmt.msc), then unplug-replug device to have your PC detect it again. If a device with VID of 2080 shows up, that's the NC. You should know what this means, by now. If not, read more here.
15) Try different SD card readers, especially when experiencing failure on multiple computers. As opposed to multi-adapters i.e. 6-in-1s, try dedicated microSD readers like this one. Do not use those microSD-to-normalSD converters (usually packed together in the same shipping plastic as your card) just because you only have a reader that reads regular SD cards, they tend to fail a lot.
16) At your own risk, try cleaning the contact points on your SD cards (if you must, use cleaning alcohol and a cottom swap/q-tip - do not use water), to free them of dirt and invisible grime. If you have multiple SDs, try cleaning the least expensive ones first. Don't forget to leave them to dry completely before insertion into the NC. Credit to bonobomidwest, read his experience here.

17) Use Nooter 0.2 (recommendation from thecubed):
Here's my recommendation: use the stock charger cable (the one with the light-up N in it) when you try Nooter 0.2.
If the light goes from orange to green (or something like that) that means Nooter is booted and working.
My new thought: some file in /rom is missing, which controls the backlight and lcd controller. I can't prove this, but it seems logical haha.
All you need to do is get Nooter 0.2 booted and ssh'd in and you'll be able to dd over a complete 1.0.1 backup.

All these did not work for me, but hope this is useful to some. I've read testimonies from everyone that this is an unbrickable device, and I certainly hope it's true, and for a kind soul to help suggest more solutions. As I'm overseas, do you think I should call BN up to see if I can arrange to send my device back for fixing/replacement? It's been a month since purchase, and 3 weeks of failed restore attempts.

You sure you just don't have crap or badly burned SD cards? Sounds pretty much what happens if you boot s really slow/junk SD or burn it badly.

I tried on 6 different SD cards:
1. Transcend 8GB Class 6
2. Transcend 4GB Class 2
3. Wintec 16GB Class 10
4. Sandisk 4GB Class 4
5. Sandisk 2GB non-SDHC
6. Sandisk 256MB
I've burned stuffs like Autonooter and Honeycomb on these before, and they worked fine.

First of all - great job in pulling all the resources into one place (it's small consolation, but i think you've just helped a whole load of people )
Second, i apologise if I'm telling you stuff that's obvious, but in helping out on these forums often it's the LOGIC of troubleshooting rather than the particulars of the problem that are important... In other words, only vary one thing at a time, and ALWAYS swap out every piece of hardware involved at each stage... if you always rely on one piece of hardware this might be the weak link... so have you tried a different SD drive or adapter? and have you tried burning from a different computer?
Now, I'm not being insulting, because I had a virtually identical problem with my first froyo - it just wouldn't boot (as you describe) despite multiple burns, different cards, all of the standard formatting tricks etc. It wouldn't work in multiple computers - the common element being the SD/microSD adapter. It never occurred to me that such an electrically simple part could be at fault, but you bet it was - in fact i would say in my experience these things consistently fail! (I spent a day kickign myself, because we know ho unreliable they are from using them in other devices). They also all look alike so it's hard to keep track of which one you are dealing with They also fail unexpectedly, so if you used an adapter before there's no guarantee it's working now...
Sooo... Have you tried a dedicated microSD reader (rather than a simple adapter)? I now carry one with me everywhere (it doubles as the world's smallest thumb drive too)

Also bear in mind that froyo appears not to work on 16gb cards (i see you tried one)
Also, from my experience with other devices these cards are very sensitive to dirt and oil on the contacts. Certainly with enough frustrated handling you can get enough finger-grease on them to have them fail. Also they seem to be much less tolerant when writing than reading. I have NO idea how you would go about cleaning out the slot in the NC (and as someone who has ruined at least one DVD drive by blowing canned air where you shouldn't I'm not going to advocate for that). I have resurrected 'dead' SD cards before by cleaning the contacts with rubbing alcohol and a q-tip (on the card's contacts) - but again do so with great care (at your own risk!!!) and with your cheapest card, and make sure it si completely dry before you put it in the NC.
I have been generally a little scared that all this plugging and unplugging of the microSD might hurt the NC, so i have done everything i can to avoid that...
I am sure you can find someone local to you willing to help fix your boot issue but I assure you, its damn near impossible to brick a nook without physical damage.

No offence taken at all, in fact I am very appreciative of your contribution. I forgot to add the fact that I tried on 2 different card readers, plus indeed tried to clean the slot via an air duster VERY GENTLY as a last effort resort (I would not recommend this, it may cause permanent hardware damage). Once I'm free I'll go get a new SD reader (reads uSD only) and a new uSD which I haven't tried before. I'll try cleaning the contact points too.

This took me almost 2 days of reboots, black screens, and freezing. I would get into CWR, and it would freeze. Had to reboot, got the black screen of death. Literally, a couple hundred reboots before it said that the OS has successfully installed, and of course, it froze again. Many more reboots, and it was finally at stock. I figure getting it back to stock was enough to return it.

I also have this issue and have been trying many things. My nook did boot nooter 0.2 (the light went green) but I couldn't get Win 7 or Ubuntu to connect to it. My screen never changes at all, no backlight even. Seems this may be a larger issue than most believe it to be, especially for people like us who don't live in the US.

If you can find a friend or person in your area having the same device, you can try to see if an SD you burned work on theirs. If it works on theirs, it's possible that your SD slot is defective - but then comes the question of it being in working condition before the bricking happened, right?
I still think mine's recoverable, as with yours. Could be a bad SD or reader, or bad contacts. I'm going to try out using another reader plus purchase an el-cheapo branded SD. I'm also going to try formatting it via another PC in a linux environment and messing around with the partitions.
I understand the trouble you may have taken to get the device - and this happens. All the best mate, and do cheer up, don't give up.

When I finally got it to work, the SD card was installed with the 1.0.1 stock OS on it, and CWR. The problem was that that (+) and (-) would only occasionally work. And if they did, it would usually freeze. I would be able to format system, but it would freeze if I tried to format data. Powered off, and I would get the black screen of death (BSoD). Once this happened, I would plug it into my computer so that I could hear the chime indicating a new device was plugged in. I found that ejecting the SD and then rebooting would sometimes help get rid of the BSoD. Then another power down, plug in the SD, and start again. Also, holding the N, +, and Power would sometimes help in launching CWR. I would usually have to hold for 60 seconds, but it would finally launch. It seemed like the nook was trying to run a process that slowing it down and causing it to freeze, but I couldn't figure out what it was. If I would wait an hour, it would boot CWR and allow me to format system and data, but then it would freeze when I would try to install the zip.
The successful install message was in CWR. It said Install From SD Card Complete, or something like that. After that, I still had to do the 8 reboots. It would load up the stock welcome screen and freeze. 8 reboots later, I got the video lady. Good enough to return it to the store.
It really was just persistence. It would usually take an hour of reboots before I was able to try to install the zip, and it probably failed on me 15+ times. The status bar would get half way, and freeze. Then I had to begin again. If it had been my nook instead of my friends, I probably would have given up. I wish I could be more specific, but unfortunately I am new to all of this. My nook rooted just fine, and fixing his is really my only experience with CWR. I just kept going until it worked.

My wife has one as well so am able to test using that and the SD works fine in hers. The whole screen not turning on thing is weird though, does your screen turn on?
We bought them when on honeymoon in America so didn't have to pay a shipper or anything
Deleting the partitions manually with Gparted and using dd to burn the SDs and making sure the correct partitions are bootable doesn't seem to work. Last night I retried a lot of the previously attempted options, with no results.
It's weird to think that a working SD slot and a slew of cards will suddenly malfunction, but for now that seems like the most plausible reason why my NC can't boot anything off SD.
To think back how it all started, the device suddenly rebooted from HC preview v0.4 to stock BN 1.01 (rooted + installed CWR on eMMC) while the SD is inserted, then upon another reboot it simply stays dead, this gives me reason to believe that the internal boot partition is corrupted, and SD slot nuked hardware-wise.
Hmmm, really hoping to find someone else who has the same device, in my area.
Right now I am at the Black Screen of Death as well...
I think Barnes should refund me, but I am willing to do some tests for the good of society.

Update:
Ok, so after running through it, I ended up getting stuck on the boot screen that shows N. If I powered off, it would restart and get stuck at that screen. I tried the 8 shutdowns (it installed new software), but afterwards, it was still stuck. So, I tried another method I found on the forums. I powered off holding the N button and power, which caused it to boot back up and do a factory reset. I now have a factory fresh Nook.
Okay, it's been a while since I kept this thread updated - I contacted BN and had the device sent back, apparently the SD slot failed so they sent me a new one. I'm just wondering if it's sheer concidence that it happened, as I was tinkering with Nookie Honey preview v0.4, when the hardware suddenly failed.
Oh well, I guess the NC still remains as a 99.99% unbrickable device - with the 0.01% being related to the ambiguous root cause to my case.
I now have 2 NCs (one from the RMA process, another one from the $199 eBay deal.
ETA: I've gotten it all figured, I think, and you can read my updates in the comments. I am STILL STUCK on this though:
ANY IDEA WHERE I CAN GET A NEW REPLACEMENT NOOK HD+ CABLE??? This 'unique' style is the STUPIDEST IDEA EVER, because I cannot find one ANYWHERE on Ebay or Amazon, and am NOT paying a crapload of cash to B&N to get this cord plus other stuff I don't want. The cord has a very loose, bent, worn spot on it just before it gets to the plug for the Nook end, and it frequently disconnects itself. (I know how to keep an eye on it though so this wouldn't be the reason for my other problems in this post.)

I got a new Nook HD+ based on the amazing HD display and that I was looking for an eReader/Tablet closer to 10"
I was NOT happy at ALL with the original Nook OS, so after a while of digging and asking around, and not being able to shell out $60+ for the Amazon.com 'N2A' or 'AFN' cards, I found the thread on here showing how to install it myself. (Cyanogenmod 10.1) Well, it installed clean and easy, but then I tried putting in my formatted (empty) 32gb micro SD card, and then tried sideloading my videos, ebooks, etc. I have tried several different ways to transfer files to this thing, and it WILL NOT WORK! It refuses to show ANY of my files, even though it shows that all this space has been used on the card.
I was just trying to delete all these files and start over with transferring them, but now whenever I open the 'My Nook' window from the 'My Computer' window when my HD+ is connected, it will sit there on a white empty box, and show the top bar loading for like EVER. It shows this green bar S L O W L Y loading up, and it has never done this before! It took a good 20 minutes to do this on the SD card window, and then just showed a blank box, when it still had files on it.
I took out the card and formatted it again in my laptop SD card adapter. I was then trying to access the files in My Nook to delete some of them, and it does the same loading forever BS.
Before I did this clean CM 10.1 install, the Nook would still not show any files sideloaded onto a card. I have tried my 64gb Samsung class 10 SDXC card also, with the same results of not showing any files. I am using Calibre to load the ebooks up, and I see them all in the folder when I check it on my Laptop, but I haven't really installed any apps from the Google store yet, so I don't know for sure if the ebooks will work. PLEASE HELP!! I have spent literally a WEEK of SOLID TIME in converting video files, transferring files, and formatting/installing/rooting/whatever my Nook, and I haven't gotten ANYWHERE really. I love the interface on this CM OS, but I am primarily wanting to use this for watching MY MOVIES that I have already on my laptop...
ANY help is much appreciated, because I feel like I wasted a crapload of money and this is just sitting here driving me nuts!!

Couple of things to check here.
1. If you put the card into a windows machine, does it show that the card is 32gig? Does it show any files on the card?
If YES to both, then the card is fine. If NO, then you need to reformat the card and get it back to 32gig and showing files. If you need help with that, there are some apps on the web that can help....
2. On your Nook, load up a file viewing app. For ease of comparison, load "File manager HD"from the Play Store. Use the app to navigate to the External SD card and validate that you can see the card, that it is 32gig and you can see files? If yes you are good to go, if no, then if number 1 above is OK, there is something wrong with the CM 10.1 load or with your Nook.
3. If the issue is now installing APK files from the card, you should be able to from File Manger HD, as long as you have turned off "unknonw sources" in the settings menu.
Settings -- Security -- unknonw sources checkmark needs to be checked.
Give those things a shot and report back your results. the HD+ is an awesome unit and it sounds like you may have a tiny issue somewhere.
Thanks for the help, but the card is fine. I've used the card for other things before, and I have formatted it multiple times. My question is, how can you expect to see files on it after it has been formatted? The format wipes all files from the card.
Also, I was not trying to load apps. I thought I had made that clear in my post, that my problem is trying to load videos/movies onto the card. I searched online for hours, and couldn't find anything useful or helpful on why I couldn't load video files, but there was a huge abundance of forums, YouTube videos, and other help on how to load apps to an SD card...
I stayed up the whole night messing with this, and ended up taking the 64gb class 10 card from my phone and using that in my Nook, and after about 12 hours of straight work, I got some movies to load on it. I found a half-decent video player in Gapps that I could watch them on.
My next problem: the battery on this thing is horrendous. I had it sitting, fully charged before hand, and in sleep mode, for about 4 hours, and the battery went down 10%! I notice when I am browsing the Nook, not playing videos or getting online, I discharge about twice that fast. At this rate, I will be darn lucky to watch a 2-hour movie before the battery dies...

1: What ways did you try exactly? Have you tried Airdroid? That is my go to for transferring files to and from my devices. That way, I don't have to mess about with connecting USB cables and whatnot.
2: What is "it"? You say "it will not work" and "it refuses to show.." and "it shows all this space".

So you have the SD card loaded in the Nook and are browsing it via USB cable on your Windows 7 machine? Just trying to clarify how exactly you are doing this.

Odd. What size and format are the movies? Do these cards work fine on other devices?
How did you format the SD cards? Did you put them in the Nook and format them, or did you format them in Windows and then put them in the Nook? Are they formatted with the correct file type? Taken from the user manual:

Where is that option is CM 10.1? I have been unsuccessful in finding an in device format method. If it's in the user manual, chances are this operation is in the stock rom and does OP no good.

I don't there is one (as far as I can see). My point was that I believe the 64 GB SD has to be formatted with exFat in order to work. I think the 32 GB card can be either exFat or Fat32.

I used the free windows program/app called 'SDFormatter' that was recommended to me in the thread that I used here for the CM 10.1 Rom... And I got the 64gb class 10 card that WAS in my phone to work after it was formatted to exFAT.

The 32gb card I had I am not positive what format it was, but I believe it was FAT32, and the Nook did NOT format the card, or make any effort to, and even after I formatted it myself in many ways, it was still FAT32...
The 64gb card was either always exFAT, or was turned into exFAT when I formatted it just prior to inserting into the Nook. I believe this was a big reason the 32gb card wasn't working for me, along with my having to COPY the 'My Files' folder from the Nook Onboard storage, and PASTE the folder into my SD card storage, which I then put all my videos and other content into, and afterwards it worked fine...

PS: ANY IDEA WHERE I CAN GET A NEW REPLACEMENT NOOK HD+ CABLE??? This 'unique' style is the STUPIDEST IDEA EVER, because I cannot find one ANYWHERE on Ebay or Amazon, and am NOT paying a crapload of cash to B&N to get this cord plus other stuff I don't want. The cord has a very loose, bent, worn spot on it just before it gets to the plug for the Nook end, and it frequently disconnects itself. (I know how to keep an eye on it though so this wouldn't be the reason for my other problems in this post.)

What apps are you using? Different apps store things in different places, I was trying epub readers and the last one found 3 copies of every book I had scattered all over internal and external storage.
I settled on the Nook Reader app, and it took a while to figure it out. I installed the APK, then I had to reboot the HD+ to get the Nook folder to show up on my pc. I then simply moved the epub files to BN NookHD+/internal storage/Nook/My Documents/ - I used the following - /Author/Book/epub file. They were showing up as they were being pasted, and work fine.
For movies I use MX Player with the mkv codec so I can watch movies with converting them. I would also rather stream with ES File Explorer and MX Player, but I can move the files to my sd card and watch as well.
You can only get the cable from B&N, or search for a used one, yes it's stupid, but it's also covered under the warranty. Take it back and they will replace it, under the 1 year warranty or the extended 2 year one, they replaced my cord/charger (wall part) with no questions ask - it hummed - and annoyed me, I told the gal working "This thing hums and is distracts me while reading, I need another one" the gal said "No problem" grabbed a box and pulled one out and away I went. You can also buy just the cable for $14.95.
My Nook sometimes loads very slowly when connecting it to my Windows 7 desktop, but nothing like you are describing.
When you used SD Formatter, did you enable "Format Size Adjustment"?

Did you mess with the Performance settings in CM10.1? If not, I'd say the battery is dying. That is way to short, I streamed "Lucky Number Slevin" @ 720P for an hour and fifty minutes and didn't use, but 15% of my battery, it was fully charged before starting the movie. So everything was turned on and actually working the whole time.

Sorry, I answered your questions out of order, I'm too tired to order things correctly, but I think I answered everything. Oh, I'm using the cheapest Sandisk Class 4 32GB card, I could buy at Staples for $30, and it works fine.

I found and wrote down the number for B&N, I will try giving them a call tomorrow. Do you know if they would send me one free if I bought the Nook secondhand? Should I just not tell them I got it used?
Yes, my battery seems to be pretty bad off, and the guy who sold it on eBay of course said it was barely used, and had NO problems. I have emailed him thru ebay asking for a partial refund, and I may contact ebay about this if he does not want to be cooperative. I paid $145 for it, which is basically what I could get a new one for now, I just didn't notice that when I got it a couple months ago. Do you think B&N would sell me a cheap battery? Or do you know where I can get one? I had bought a 'Like NEW' Nook First Edition (still my fav. basic eBook Reader) for my mom around Christmas time for $60, and then after I got it, and she used it for all of 15 minutes, turned it on 2 or 3 times, and it ended up freezing on the screensaver. I tried looking up and attempting any 'fixes' and nothing was working. I've powered it down and removed the battery and it's oddly still showing a screen saver pic. :/ So I had to contact the seller after it had been about 4 weeks since I bought it, and he used the excuse of it being over a month, and said I had emailed him and said it was working great before, when all I'd done was send him an update that I did get it and my mom was happy, but this was before she tried turning it on again. After sending eBay a complaint, they made the guy refund my money. I would have even returned the reader to him if he had worked with me in the refund, but I still have it, for all the good it is. Basically a paperweight. lol
Anyway, thanks for the tips, and I REALLY hope I can figure out the battery thing because I love the Android Nook, and I finally have a tablet with HD movie playback which is what I've wanted for a long time!

I don't think they will send you one for free, I took mine in and exchanged it, but I was still under my extended 2 year warranty. I also spend a lot of time at my B&N, so that may have helped speed me through the process.
They will not sell you a battery, they claim you have to be a "certified tech" to change them. From the tear-down posted on youtube, it seems quite possible and fairly easy, but don't know where you'd get a battery. It's a risk removing the plastic around the screen, and it seemed like the clips/tabs that hold it on got broken, so you would probably need some two-sided foam tape, kind of like body-side molding tape, made by 3M.
I would try and get eBay to give you a refund or at least enough to cover sending it in for battery replacement and another $15 for the cord replacement as well. "Like new" doesn't have a messed up cord, and a battery that won't hold 30% of it's original charge, offer to send eBay pictures of the damaged cord.

Well, I called B&N and after 30 min. wait, spoke to a barely legible lady who checked my account, and said that she was 'placing the order' after she asked if I wanted them to send me a new one. She never once indicated that it would be charged to my account, or that they were charging me for the cord. But then she said that they were out of cords, and to try calling back Monday. But then she didn't sound like she really knew well enough what she was doing, as I had to explain to her 3 times when she first answered my call, that I needed a NEW CORD, because the one I had had a short in it.
As for eBay, the d-bag I emailed (goldnuggetpawn) about the Nook said, "We tested the product thoroughly, and there were no problems with the battery, and the cord was brand new, and the auction showed pictures of the cord. We only offer a complete refund within 14 days of purchase, and it has been longer than that. We do not offer partial refunds."
So basically I have a Nook that's about to crap out any time, that I have to keep plugged into the wall to use, and that I have to fight with multiple time to transfer files on because the cord is junk. I have to say I am BEYOND DONE with eBay and their BS. I seem to have the WORST luck with them, and I have had enough. They allow people to get away with anything, and I am currently stuck with them trying to charge me $67+ in 'seller fees' because I listed 2 items, one which I actually sold (a netbook for $200) and one which someone did use the 'Buy-Out' for, but then never bothered to pay me, contact me, or respond to my emails. So I get charged a huge fee for selling something that I was never paid for! And they are saying it's too late to file a non-paying buyer report, because I did what they told me to do and tried filing a different report first, then was told I had to wait for the buyer to respond (when they had already not replied to half a dozen messages!) and apparently after all that, it had been too long to file another report. This buyer/scammer who made an account just minutes before buying my DVD lot, lives in Tunisia (allegedly) when I had made the auction to sell to US and Canada ONLY. I am just so tired of being burned, I guess.
It's going to be hard to show in pictures, because the cord is still intact, it's just very loose and 'bendy' on the end, and it shouldn't be, it's in a thick rubberized type coating, and does not bend.
Anyway, thanks for the help, and I will keep working on it. I may be forced to just sell it now as an Android CM10.2 (I think it would sell better that way) and get me something else...

I ran into an issue with this message and was able to resolve it. My round-about story (with all the details, some immaterial to the issue)...
The issue: Anytime the phone would be accessed/woken up after a few minutes of not being used, I would get the message to check the battery cover. I also would get the message when rebooting but that one appears to be normal. The one that appears each time after minutes of inactivity is not normal. I would only get the message to check the charging port cover after removing the charging cable, so that always remained normal and as it should.
I did the usual: ensured that the battery cover was on correctly, securely and entirely...several times. I figured it was an issue that I was going to have to live with. I also noticed that I would intermittently get a message about my SD card. Sometimes the error would say that it is blank, sometimes it would say it is blank or has unsupported files on it, other times it would simply tell me it was safe to remove my SD card. All for no apparent reason. I placed my card in my daughter's S5 and it worked. Placed it in my wife's S5 and it worked. Checked it on my PC and it worked. I even went so far as to wipe it out, format it and try again. Still received the error message on my phone. Not frequently but often enough to where I began to wonder if I was sold a bad phone.
I read some folks recommended doing a factory reset. I had nothing to lose so I did. I was reinstalling everything and things went well for the first few minutes and then the screen died. The phone was live, the buttons would light up but the screen would never turn on. I immediately headed over to the store and spoke with a really cool manager would agreed to swap out the phone for a new one since I have only had it 3 weeks (as opposed to sending me to the circus tent that is the maintenance facility). New SIM, new phone. Was a happy camper.
Got home, installed everything...and again....the messages started coming to check the battery cover. Frustrated I just decided that it was an issue I was going to have to live with afterall. Hopefully a fix will come about later, right? Well, it wasn't too much longer that the SD errors started again but this time more often. This can't be good. So, I decided to try swapping out the SD cards on my phone and my daughter's phone for a longer period of time. Let's do it overnight. So, in the morning I checked my phone (with her SD card). No messages at all. I checked her phone with my SD card. Hers now had the check batter cover message. I let both sit for a few minutes and checked them again. No messages on mine, but hers once again had the check battery cover. No errors regarding the SD card tho and it was able to access the content on the SD card just fine. Both SD Cards are 16GB SanDisk.
So, to further test, I swapped the SD cards again, putting her card back in her phone and mine back in my phone. Sure enough, mine was getting the check battery cover and hers was not.
So, long story short, it turns out that my SD card is causing the check battery message. It was throwing SD card errors on my phone but not on hers. So, for those people getting the constant battery cover message but not getting the SD card errors....try swapping out SD cards and see if that resolves the issue.

EDIT:
SD Card that went bad was SanDisk microSD 16GB. Was replaced with an identical card and works fine. It has been a couple of weeks now and the replacement SD card in my GS5 continues to function properly and I no longer get the pop-ups unless I reboot or have actually removed the battery cover. I left the bad one in my tablet this whole time just to see and sure enough it was giving errors for a week and now it simply no longer works.

Um no. Obviously there was an SD card issue. That needs to be taken care of. Oh somethings wrong here let me get rid of the warnings. That's not how things are done. Whether you take the pop ups away or not doesn't fix the problem. It's just not allowing to tell you the problem

Damn I was hoping for something different. I'm getting the same messages,
But I haven't put a SD CARD in yet. Still have my Note 2 running, S5 is a work phone. I've tried different ways to install cover. Mostly following the pressure point indications that flash up with the message pops up.
I'll monitor it, I can't remember when the last time I've seen them. Forgot phone at work yesterday charging it.
If I don't get messages any more, my fix was putting the cover on starting at the top. You definitely need to hear the clicks on all sides. I noticed sometimes I would not hear the top click if I started putting cover on from the bottom or sides.
Good find on the SDCARD issue though. Can you edit your first post and add in make/model of the cards that are working for you, and the one that is causing errors as reference.
It would be interesting to know if it's specific makes/models/sizes of cards that cause the message.

I agree the issue will still stand but I see two issues being addressed and I solved one

Done. Both the bad one and the replacement were the same make/model.

Actually, you were treating the symptom, not the cause. That's the same as if your car was leaking oil in the driveway and you simply put a pan under the car to catch the oil. Sure, you are no longer getting oil on your driveway but it doesn't change the fact that your car still has an oil leak and will eventually lock up the engine if not fixed. By fixing the actual problem (bad SD card), I was able to resolve the pop-up notices.
Fix the problem and the symptoms go away.

When everything is working properly do you get the "check battery" pop up after reboot and "check charging flap" after charging? YES it's built in annoying I was offerin a suggestion to get rid of those annoying pop ups that is all.

Yes, the message does now appear only when it is supposed to and no longer appears when it is not supposed to. When it appears as designed, it is not a problem. It may an annoyance to some, but is in no way a problem because that's what it was designed to do. When the pop-ups do appear at times when it is not supposed to then it is considered a problem because that isn't what it was designed to do. Mine was doing it when it wasn't supposed to. This is why the title of the post was called "Check Battery Cover message problem" and not "Check Battery Cover message toggle to shut it off from showing up when it's supposed to."

Wow that's a trip. I was expecting it to be an issue with maybe the top of the card being slighter fatter.
I was beginning to question whether the I-Balson case I put on it was tripping a sensor.

I´ve also had the same issue for some time and it started when I got a new flip wallet case. Now I got real tired of this and I tried to solve the issue by simply and carefully BEND the two connectors on the back of the phone nearby the camera. And that SOLVED my issue - the message is gone!! Before it came frequently all the time. :good:

I know this is an old thread, but oh man! is this guy for real? can't tell if it's a poor attempt at trolling, or a poor attempt at issue comprehension and resolution.
Old thread but I just got bit in the butt by this one. I was only getting the message about the back cover on reboots. I would have thought that you would never see this message unless there was an issue, but did some reading and it seemed that this was normal behavior. So I took the phone snorkling (yes I know you're not supposed to take it in salt water but figured I could clean out the headphone jack). By the time I took it out of my pocket to take pics, it was dead (no more than 5 minutes). Took off the back cover, found water which left salt behind after it dried. Phone has not recovered, I am going to try to take it apart this weekend and clean out the salt. It was a work phone and already been replaced, but I'd like to try to get the pictures off of this from my vacation. It would be nice if there was a way to know for sure if the phone is properly sealed up before going into the water with it. Work gave me another S5, but I won't be exposing it to any water because I can't trust that it's properly sealed.
