I have made (approximately) 512MB ext2 partition and used INSTALL.EXE. But haret gives me "no filesystem could mount root" and reboot.
Any ideas? Tested gingerbread and CM6.1. Both gives same results.
Possibly bad SD card?
You also prepared a linux swap partition of 64 MB?
And did you make your fat32, ext2 and linux swap primary?
If those are the case, then it should work afaik.
Else you might want to try a different SD card yes.
Nope, i just had primary fat32 and logical ext2.
I have recreated the way, you said and it works. Thanks!
Glad to see I helped, have fun with android!

You must set fat32 primary in first partition, and set ext2 primary in second partition, Important! ext2 primary must less than 512MB!Just format Fat32, don't format ext2.

what could this be? and how could i change the ext2 partition to something else or in size?

Use cyanogen's recovery console.
alt+x
#parted
#rm 2 <- this will delete the partition
#print <- find out what blocks are free
#mkpartfs primary ext2 xxxx xxxx <- the blocks that were free discovered from the above command
#exit
#reboot
I *think* these instructions should work, go ahead and test them out, if it doesn't, just delete all the partitions and use the instructions from JACHero thread (1st post, bottom) to repartition your sdcard.
well that wouldnt work for me at all...that whole parted process is screwy for me...but what i did was use some sdformatter from like sd association which formatted the whole card finally and now i can use partition manager again..but thx anyways =]
I just got a new SD card (4 gig, class 6) and am attempting to set it up to have three partitions.
A fat32, an ext3 and a linux swap.
I'm using a rather nice tutorial from here on XDA that involves using Ubuntu. Things are going great until I remount the SD card to the phone.
I get an error message that says the card is either empty or using an unsupported format. It then wants me to format it using the phones onboard formater.
I'm at a loss here. I've seen that others seem to have a similar problem, but I don't know if there have been any fixes (at least I haven't found any).
Any suggestions?
So you got it partitioned but did you format the filesystems?

Maybe not?
I formated so that I'd have a fat32, an ext3 of about 500megs and a linux_swap of about 32megs. After I saw that it created them I just closed the program.
Is there more to it than that?
If you just used fdisk, parted, or gparted then yes. All these programs do is parition the drive into logical units for filesystems. You still must create the actual filesystems.
From recovery
mke2fs -j /dev/block/mmcblk0p2
mkswap /dev/block/mmcblk0p3
If you just shrunk the fat32 with parted or gparted then that is it. However if you wiped the original partition then that must be formatted as well. You should use windows for that.

you would have to re-partition your sdcard to include a larger linux-swap partition.
would it be possible for you to give me the code i would type on comsole if i wanted 1gb ext4 and 64 or or of swap?
i have been looking everywhere but i cant seem to find it.
i used 51dustys script for the partioning part nothing on swap in there. it created it for me.
You could use gparted or the partion editor in ubuntu to resize it but it will takes about a half hour to resize and you would have to do it twice since you would also have to resize your ext partion to give you space to extend your swap. It's easier and quicker to just backup and format
ok q. if i go into console and change sd fat32 size to say 2gb. and how would i get ext4 to 1gb everytime i try it reverts back to ext2 i can get ext2 to 1gb but i want ext4. and if i got it like that would the remainder be swap?
You do not need over 500 mb for your ext and anything over 96mb for your swap is quite excessive.
ok i understand that. but with 96mb i would like. its not neccessary for me to have 1gb of ext jst the swap
Either reformat or download either gparted or ubuntu and make a live cd and use either one to resize
thks everyone for info
shold have retraced steps
51dustys script has all i need to complete swap. il try it out monday. also his script will do the format for you from console.
i know you have already found your answer, but i used sdparted to partition my card and it is very simple and easy.
Hello there,
So i'm trying to figure out how to partition my 1gb sd card for the hero rom and ive read about there being a ext3, ext2 and fat 32, but do i need all three or just two of those? If so which ones?
I know paragon partition manager has the option for ext2 and ext3 aswell as linux-swap 2...
Just wondering how much should be given for each?
Fat 32?
and whatever else i need.
Thanks in advance.
upgrade ur recovery to cyanogens 1.4 then use gparted. search. dont need dat program its all done from your fone. supper easy.
also wrong section and its fat32 ext3 and linux-swap 32mbs

You need:
Fat32
ext3 - not bigger than 1.5GB...512mb is a good size
linux-swap - anything from 32 to 96...I use 64mb
They must be in that order.
I'm assuming that 1GB card is the one that came with you're phone, if so, don't bother. Buy a branded class 6 card, they're very cheap nowadays. reason being, the phone needs to cache things to the linux-swap partition...that faster the card the better the performance (in theory).
As Hiroots said, partitioning can be done on your phone, look for a guide on using parted (*not* gparted)
Please post in Q&A next time.
I want to install RunnymedeMod and it requires that I have a 1GB Ext4 partition. I have an 8GB SD Card...
I use Minitool Partition to create a 1GB Ext4. I apply the changes... I take the ROM zip file and put it on my SD card. When I go to the Recovery to install it, I go to chose the Zip file and it isn't there...
I boot my phone back up and open my SD card's file on my PC. When I look, the partition is no longer there and the ROM zip isn't on my SD anymore... it is getting frustrating.
Any helpful ideas?
The reason you can't see the 1GB partition is because Windows cannot read ext partitions. I suggest you install 4ext recovery, then create an ext2 partition and then upgrade it to ext3 and the lastly ext4. This is your best bet to make sure it's partitioned correctly and smoothly.

So I have touch 4Ext Recovery... when I want to create partitions it says First Ext and Second Ext and then Swap size.
I have an 8GB SD and I need a 1GB Ext4 partition.

First ext: 1gb, skip second ext and skip swap. Then upgrade to ext3 and lastly ext4.
