Hey guys,
Im really sorry to bother you with this and I bet there has been plenty of threads about this, but Im still clueless.
I got a few files with the ending .apk.jar and for the life of me I can't get them installed. I found this site where you can get an apk from a jar or jad file, but I didn't quite understand how that should work.
And the Java runtime thingy seems to have been taken off the market.
Can anyone tell me how to install these kinds of files? I stumble over them again and again but their kind of useless to me
Thanks so much in advance!
try it with WINRAR and open this file, there should be an .apk file in it, this can be installed

the cab file is a simple way you install an app on your device. Just click on the cab and it should begin installation. Pay attention to where you are sending the cab on your device so that it is easy to find and just click and install. A Zip file is a compressed file or files. You must uncompress before you can install the cab. sometimes you will find the cab file inside the compressed zip file. Another format for compression is rar files. I use winrar to uncompress to desktop.
I strongly suggest that you read this forum as much as possible to learn as much as you can. Read the FAQ's and the WIKI. Also do research on your particular phone to learn its strenghts and weaknesses. There is lots to learn and you will have to do lots and lots and lots of reading. Don't get discouraged, just keep reading. There is a wonderful search feature as well to search for specific things. It takes a little getting use to; however, once you figure it out - how to use it efficiently, you will find things - answers - really easily. Some threads are really long and you will probably want to skip right to the end of the thread. _ Don't. Read the whole thread before posting. Some members get really frustrated with new commers who don't read before asking questions.

I want to get into optimizing apk's like the 2.0 launcher stock is 9mb. I already make my own roms for my phone but how exactly do i open a apk to get to its contents?
EDIT Nevermind I feel kinda stupid if you cant figure it out try opening it with winrar. LOL
You make your own ROMs yet you dont know how to open an apk?
Well i mostly just rip out what i don't need from other roms. I shuda figured .apk is just a.zip cause everything on android is a .zip of someform lol
im currently on phoenix 4.5 and was missing the unified inbox and program monitor widget from rogers 2.2 so i opened up my stock flash and took out the files for:
seven.apk, unifiedInbox.apk +.odex and SamsungWidget_ProgramMonitor.apk +.odex
I tried mounting as R/W and dropped them in System/apps then tried installing...
only the first program installed
"Application not installed"
I dont think its a coinsidence that the ones with .odex files didnt install.
Looked up odex... then Deodexing....
Custom roms are DEODEXED...
deodexing isnt as easy as dropping the odex file into the zip and renaming apk.. is it? because that didnt work either...
ok how can i intall these? what am i missing?
really? no suggestions yet?
deodex the programs, drop into system/app, reboot. No need to install system apps.
Sent from my Craptivate with the leaky rom
what is the proper way to deodex the apps?
i tried rename .apk as .zip
drop in the odex files with windows explorer
rename back to .apk
is there something i missed? anytime i try to repackage an app it wont install.
I tried replaceing the default icons in LauncherPro once before. didnt work either.
am i supposed to zip with a certain program? no compression?
i cant seem to find any instructions on how to do this without digging through hours of app programming first.

thanks for the link, but i was looking for information "without learning programming first"
the link you posted assumes the reader has a working knowlege of programming. I think i can work most of it out but it explains "what to tell it to do" but rather unclear "what it will do" or what you need.
it mentions pointing the script to the .odex file, but it never mentions needing an apk or outputting a deodexed apk. Or is that not what it does?? the help is written as though you know what you are doing but dont know how to use his script..
i think it wants me to...
so to use it i need the baksmali and its script.
run them and point them to the apk and odex with the proper command.
then i will output a deodexed apk?
i dont want to ask but..
can someone do it for me?
files attaced.....
UnifiedInbox deodexed, installed on Cognition 3.04 working.
Hello
After lurking around these boards for a long time I finally decided I should get an account. I am in need of some help or advice since can't work out what I am doing wrong.
I'm having a lot of trouble signing my APK's after changing them. I use 7Zip to open the APK, extract the pictures for editing. Then I just drag them back into the 7Zip window.
The tool I'm trying to sign them with is Auto-sign. It looks all good, get no error messages and it creates the signed file okay. But Android does not like the files. Won't let me install them. I'm mainly trying to mod Contacts.APK but I have tried others as well without luck.
I would be grateful for any help or advice.
