I'm on Firefly 2.05 and thinking about flashing with other kernel supports oc/uv. Which would be a better marriage, w/ suckerpunch or firebird? Also, I really like the GPS fix on original FF. Will I be compromise the GPS fix if I falsh with a differnt kernel?

you can try suckerpunch because it is updated so often and most of issues will be fixed within days. The kernel does not affect your GPS performance.

you can flash a kernel over an existing one (basically it will replace the existing one).

What Kernel you are using? I think you are running on 2.6.25, but Rls 16 uses Wifi modules (wlan.ko) compiled for 2.6.32.
To fix this:
1. You can change to newer Kernel 2.6.32 or
2. You can change to older wlan.ko (compiled for 2.6.25)

I am able to get the wifi to start and find my network, but when it gets to obtaining ip address it sits for a while then starts all over again. has anyone else had this issue? I am using the .32 zimage and I even took the wlan.ko from the rls 15 build (that works) and it does the exact same thing thing.

hi toasty, sorry but where can i have this kernel from?
Hi Guys,
I just got my Captivate couple days ago. I were able to unlock, root, get a new ROM (Cognition v2.3b8) and install some apps. I'm looking to get a new kernel for the ROM. How would I go about flashing it to a different Kernel like SpeedMod K12I ? Thanks.
Sgs kernel flasher app in market
To be safe always disable lagfix prior. App is very easy to user and quick

I am a noob here. But I am wondering what are/is the benefits/risk of replacing the kernel that comes with Cog v2.3b8 with another. I recently flashed Cog v2.3b8 from stock (batch 1006), and find this is pretty much as stable as stock. Only issue is with GPS (which was hit and miss on stock). So do the benefits of replacing the kernel in Cog v2.3b8 outweigh the risks?
Thankshttp://media.xda-developers.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
Well kernels have different features and abilities in them. It depends what you want from your kernel. Some might support BLN while others will have OC/UC or just OC. Various combinations of options. You just need to make sure that the kernel/ROM/modem are from the same family, etc. I9000 or Captivate. If you flash a i9000 kernel into a Captivate ROM you might have issues.
Cog v2.3b8 is a Captivate ROM I believe. You can flash Kernels which are for it.
cog runs fine with an i9000 kernel so long as you also use an i9000 modem. i can't run the i9000 roms because of service drops but this set-up is still very good.

If you want to install a new kernel over the existing kernel,
1. Download the Kernel from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=893880
2. Go to CWM recovery. (directly or through ROM Manager)
3. Choose the zip from SD
4. Flash and Reboot.
Make sure that there is atleast one boot after the ROM is installed.
To confirm,
check Kernel Version in Settings-> About Phone
You should see something like

Well each kernel has it's own benefits.
For instance, Speedmod uses sztupy's Universal Lagfix unlike other Kernels that use Vodoo Lagfix.
The main differences would be in the speed and battery. Samsung uses 250hz (as default), firebird kernel uses 300Hz and Speedmod uses 500Hz. Doesn't change battery consumption much but provides more smoothness.
Then the RAM Available. It varies from Kernel to Kernel from 300-350MB.
Cappy Kernels are for Captivate Only because of reorientation fixes and button mapping.
Hope this helps
No frosty flakes here.
DoW14-T959 is based on Samsung KA6 T959 Sources
Sleep fix not in, treat it like a stock kernel for now until notified (Do not use profiles that exclude 800mhz)
Only flash this kernel from a "red recovery", do not flash it coming from any ULF kernel, flash a stock+voodoo kernel in-between, then flash this kernel. Not sure what these other kernels do, but I'm tired of hearing my kernel breaks anything due to THEIR incompatabilities.
Included:
Voodoo Sound v4 (Thanks supercurio)
Voodoo Lagfix (Thanks supercurio)
Voodoo Color (Thanks supercurio)
BLN included (Thanks neldar)
Based on T959 froyo source.
Safeboot to 1GHz for those phones that don't like OC (But 1.4 can be used with setcpu)
TUN (Tunneling/VPN support)
CIFS (Samba support)
JFS (Advanced users only, no automated use of this FS)
DoW14-T959 359MB RAM version -> No HD Video
DoW14-T959-HD v1.4 344MB RAM version -> HD Cam working | md5sum: 743ee5f1023a571260d32bd4c0fcc7f3
Best steps:
Get off your ULF kernel first, flash Stock + Voodoo in-between
You inform yourself what "OC" is and what to expect
Install Neldar's "SGS Kernel Flasher" before flashing ANY kernel.
Backup your existing kernel with his tool.
Flash Kernel through RED VOODOO recovery
Reversal:
Flash the backup you made with SGS Kernel Flasher
http://goo.gl/Cd2NV Follow this if you got bit by the dead horse and want your internal storage back.
Don't forget to tip Neldar, coolbho3k and supercurio if you like any of their work.

I admit, as BT user, I never revisited the cable related issues, as battery life kept people from using it.
I guess I now have an incentive to fix this up too.

The reason for that is because I plug my phone to the AUX port in the car (as I'm sure many people here do that as well) and when there's a call no sound can come out, or in(the other end can't hear anything).
Thanks for looking into it.
Looking forward to trying this. If the battery's good, this may be daily driver material

So does this kernel OC also? I am getting 1360 on quad, and 12.5 on linpack.
Nice update. Just flashed and pulled 2056 quadrant.

I never mention it to ya just because it is what it is i remember you saying you didnt want to bother finding the code for headset issue. I will say though it would be great to finally see that implemented man! i drive a truck for a living so sometimes i forget my bt and end up having to use heeadset. I would love to not have to bounce from kernel to kernel in these circumstances. Although its never been pursuasive enough to make me use them as a daily driver, other i9k kernels from ttbbal and eugene have had this fixed in their kernals for a while. maybe from diff source? Anyways great job again, ttys!

I am getting basically the same numbers. And, shouldn't the Kernel version in settings>about phone make reference to DoW? I know it's flashed because of the skinny Android at boot. Red recovery and Reboot Button app both show enabled. There's got to be something amiss, my recall of Linpack on Som's previous version was at least in the 17's. Anthing else anywhere to look at to verify that it's at 1.4? Not gonna use Set CPU, unless anyone else has and it doesn't mess things up? TIA...
I would like to flash this over Bionix V 1.21 just have a couple of questions: Does this kernel contain voodoo lagfix as well as sound? Can I flash it right over the kernel included in Bionix V 1.21.? If not would I have to disable voodoo before flashing? any and all replies are appredciated.

+1 I use my wired stereo headset for phone calls all the time. ( to me phone calls through a wired stereo headset sound so much clearer )
I really like this kernel and definitely would use it if that was fixed.

Hi there , I just need some info about some stuff about ROMs, kernels and modems.
I plan to flash the latest firefly ROM on my rogers Captivate (SGH-i896) and need a but of clearing up. Some question will be thrown your way
1- if I do flash the ROM, what and modem gets flashed with it? Or do I have to flash them separately?
2- whats the difference between speedmod and suckerpunch #59?
3-Is the lagfix included in the ROM or kernel (if it gets flashed with the ROM)?
4- what the heck is vodoo?
Thanks guys ....I did a lot of reading on different threads and somethings are worded differently and confuses me .

1. The ROM includes the modem so there's no need to flash one separately. And if I remember right, Firefly uses the JK4 Modem.
2. Suckerpunch includes the ability to overclock and/or undervolt which affects battery life and overall performance. I personally use speedmod because that's what was included with my ROM and I haven't decided to flash a new kernel.
3. Yes, the lagfix is included in the ROM and the kernel is (if I'm not mistaken) what controls the lagfix.
4. Voodoo is another set of custom tweaks and enhancements that improve a number of things including speed, audio, and video.
Hope that answers your question.

Hi guys,
Rogers Captivate, i896.
While using my headset on the following custom ROMs I am finding that the other party can hear these VERY VERY loud ticking noises. However if I unlock the screen during the call (while using my headphones, the noise will not occur)... of course locking the phone during the call while using the headset will cause this noise to appear at short intervals. There is no noise at all without using a headset.
This problem however does not occur while on the rogers stock 2.2 ROM. The headset does not cause any sounds on the iPhone either.
Any ideas as to what is causing the noise so that I can start using custom ROMs again? I cant live without my firefly....
Thanks in advance.
had similar issues with 2.2 roms. what roms modem kernel are you using?
should be good with speedmod and kc1 modem or kp1 modem.
I got the ticking noises with Pheonix (the release before ultimate) and Ultimate, Serendipity 6.2-6.3, Firefly 2.6-2.9

what kernel/s do those use. also change the modem.bin to one of the newwer ones. it is a i9000 modem on captivate issue. jk3 and jk4 really are not captivate friendly. kp1 is. kc1 is also doing well despite being an i9000 modem.
some are even using the gingerbread modems if yo want to try one.
After a quick run through i am noticing that most run speedmod k12 / k13.
Hmm so you are thinking its a modem issue?
I suppose ill try flashing alternate modems this time. I guess i have some reading to do
Perhaps i might even try out some other roms that have alternate default modems.

speedmod shouldnt be a problem but if you are not interested in overclocking you can try maybe ursa minor. it is the andromeda kernel and 2.2 rather than 2.2.1 but it is no oredinary 2.2 kernel. it might not benchmark in quadrant and linpack as well as speedmod but feels quite speedy. it uses kernel modules that can turn on and off to minimize overhead as i understand it.
