I'm trying to learn how to take hi -def movies in various video formats and convert them to a bluray format so I can burn it to a bluray disc to play on my PS3 and stand alone bluray player. So far I've tried to use avs video converter, avchdcoder, and multiavchd. It's definetly challenging to learn how to create cool looking menus, get the audio to be in sync, and not get any errors. Does anyone have a favorite software they use and any tips? Its frusturating to wait 3-5 hours to convert a movie just to find out there are errors lol. Dvds are easy to create ....it's the blurays that are challenging. I would love to hear some feedback.
Use THIS site as they helped me figure video editing out. But let me warn you about PS3 3.56 Firmware update - Sony has just made it so that it will detect a signature in pirated video; the PS3 will only play homevideos now (unless you know how to decode video ;} )

Yeah that's a good idea. A lot of the movies come with samples. See....I'm learning.
Edit : videohelp is a really good forum....I've been using it.
Ok so I transcoded a 8gb mkv to a bluray ISO....took 7 hours. Went to burn it using imgburn and got a error part way through. Guess I need to stop using cheap discs.

Stop right there. Both your PS3 and Bluray player can play x264 (and all profilesm too, I believe), PS3 also plays xvid/divx/h263, you BD player might too.
Most HD movies that are shared used the x264 codec for video and AC3 or DTS for audio, and in a Matroska (MKV) container.
They will not play on a PS3 (and most likely BD player) due to a lack of support for mkv. You'll need to remux the file in to an MPEG Transport Stream (.ts), after you do this they should be fine on both. I'm not entirely sure if DTS can be muxed in to ts, you might need to convert it to AC3 first, no biggie.
Well I took a shared movie and converted it to avchd using avchdcoder ....the conversion went fine and took a total of 7 hours....burned it to a blank bluray and didn't work in the ps3. The custom menu I created works fine but when the movie started is wouldn't play right. Have no idea why. When I get home ill have to take a closer look. Frusturating for sure. I can use avs video converter which is easy to use and works well but it down converts 6ch audio to 2ch.
Why are you spending hours encoding video and degrading the image quality when you don't have to? *Just* for custom menus?
Yeah pretty much. Just certain movies though. Most movies I just keep on a nas drive and watch them through my laptop which is hooked up to my home theater via wireless HDMI. It's a pretty cool setup actually.

I understand this is completely off topic, and thats exactly why I am posting here heh.
I am setting up a machine that I will be connecting to my television via svideo on the video card. All I will use this machine for is to watch all my xvid/vidx movies. I am going to install xp pro on it and I was wondering what you guys would recommend as for the video player to use for this type of setup. I mean I know what video players play xvid and vidx, but I was wondering if there was one made specially for what I am doing. One that would make it look better through svid card for none hd televisions.
I used to use my modded xbox for this, and it would work so well. I would use xbmc to stream all the videos from my pc to the xbox and it would display the videos beautifully on my none hd tv. Well my xbox is not working right now, so thats why I am going to do this.
Thanks for your time and help.

Hey guys i did a couple searches and really didnt find to much info..Im just wanting to know threw trial and error what converter did you use for the best playback from a xvid/divx avi to Mp4. i have used alot of them and there is always issues. Also The player is def important, is cinema the best?
I think the playback codecs are a lot more important than the player. With that said, I use Combined Community Codec Pack along with Media Player Classic. You could go with VLC for full, out-of-the box codec support too, but the interface is almost an OS itself and I'm a minimalist.
For encoding, I use and preffer (and so do many others) SUPER © encoder:

well i have used super to convert 4 differnt ways but the G1 doesnt even detect the movies. Is there something im missing? what settings should i choose?

Most codec's are packed into windows 7 now. You can always update your divx codec. There's another program I use at home called DVD Fab Platinum that works good to.
DVD Jon has his Doubletwist "iTunes Replacement" app out.. It takes all the guess work out just a litlle clunky on the interface...
Before that i used handbreak, with the old ipod settings (and a little tweeking) works great and only takes about 15 min for a 700mb avi...
So far I'm fine with Android but I still complain I playback video in Android doesn't work well. The problem is that in WinMO could perfectly reproduce videos in format AVI, resolution: 320 * 240 and FPS 18 but in Android can't do reproduce only recognized of all videos and movies that I have one that is in WMV, therefore transform a video that I had to that format while maintaining the same settings as in AVI and does not play well is unstable and closes only while playing and I tried moving some things in the converter of video formats and still did not play well.
My question is: is there any hack or something like that to make the playback of videos go better in Android or one player as CorePlayer it was that used in WinMO and had no problems with that AVI video format.
Greetings and I hope help me.

Convert them to MP4. You also might try yxplayer, which plays a lot of avi videos(not all though) for me although it's not free.

Thanks a lot! Transforming it to. mp4 and playing with yxplayer works well but I will have to transform everything again but the important thing is that it works.
Best regards.
I have had most success with arcmedia in the android market. It uses the FFMPEG codec library rather then the codecs built into android which means it plays more file types successfully then most others i have tried. It even has a stab at playing higher quality videos where you would normally only get sound in the standard player, but they still stutter a little.

Hi there!
I have gotten to new Lg Optimus 2x now for about a week and I am getting a bit annoyed now. I bought it purely on Being able to play full HD Movies on my Tv. But with countless hours spent on forums and trying with different players, and also differnt types of formats.
What I have on the phone now is QQplayer and arcmedia and ofcourse Lg's player
Formats I have used and there display quality:
.AVI Works in QQ, Arc but not in LG's
.Xvid Works in all
.Mkv (480p) Works in QQ ,Arc but not LG's Also this is where the framerate goes down.... out of sync audio.
.Mkv (720p) Just awfull
I am now converting a 720p movie to mp4 format h.264 to try if that works but it takes ages and I can't be botherd to convert a movie for 4h when I want to watch it on my TV.
So what can be done.. why can it play back some lame teasers on full hd but not a bloody movie in decent quality on 480p...
What should I try to convert movies and episodes to?(prefix)
The phone is not Rooted and I have no experience in that matter
Kind regards!

Because a video is not just a video
Video consist of 3 parts
videopart encoded to some specific format (xvid, divx, mpeg-4, h264, mpeg-2) etc
audiopart encoded to some specific format (mp3, ac3, dts) etc.
a container (avi, mp4, mkv) etc. that encapsulates the video and audio part
furthermore the video and audio part are not just encoded in specific formats, but according to specific settings - often called profiles. These define things like bitrate, b-frames, ref.frames, and other technical stuff
The chipset only support hardware acceleration (which is needed to play video in high resolution) for certain types of formats, and only when encoded after certain specifications, and only when encapsulated in certain containers, and finally only when being played by the LG player.
Other players cannot utilize the hardware acceleration but rely on software filters like ffmpeg, these give you the possibility to play formats that are not supported by the chip itself or by LG's player by using these software filters. But this also means there are no hardware acceleration to help the playback and therefore you can only play these in standard resolution and/or you can get synch issues between video/audio.
the main format supported by the chip and the LG player is called mpeg-4/h264 - and its only supported inside an mp4 container - mkv are not supported.
The encoding of the video part mpeg-4/h264 are only supported up to a certain profile level - meaning it only support upto a certain bitrate, a certain number of ref.frames, of b-frames etc. It also only support certain audio formats, mainly aac. It wont play your downloaded 720p/1080p mkv with ac3 or dts audio, and a videotrack using h264 profile level H4.1 or more with lots of ref.frames
In short you cannot just throw any downloaded or home cooked video to the mobile and expect it play - it wont. Secondly if you bought it to be a generic HD mediaplayer for these types of videofiles, then you bought it for the wrong reasons. It is not a generic HD mediaplayer, its a mobile phone, with the ability to record and play up to fullHD video - if these comply to the specifications which are supported. This videoability are mainly targeted at recording video of reasonable quality (for a mobile phone) and playing web2 content like youtube HD video which complies to these standards.
Nothing more - it wasnt designed to be your HD mediaplayer replacement
So what to do ?
make sure youre videos are encoded as h264 using max profile level 3.1 and max 10mbps bitrate - using an AAC audiotrack and encapsulated in an .mp4 container. Then they will play in HD resolution.
Now all you need is reading a couple of hundreds websites and guides on how to check your files for these specifications (mediainfo), remux video from an mkv container to an mp4 container if the video and audio inside are allready compliant, or how to reencode to desired specifications if they are not compliant.
Very usefull mini guide into the jungle of video/audio, codec, splitters and containers.
Knowing this makes it easy to setup DVDFab and other rippers/converters (hopefully).
Thanks
I tested some h264 formats on the LG2x. Baseline profile works fine for 1080p video, I tried that up to 10mbit/s. Main profile works, but is too slow on 1080p and I think 720p also. It might work with SD resolutions, but I didn't test this. High profile simply isn't even recognized by the LG media player. I did try all profile levels, it ate all of them. Perhaps someone else can figure out the maximum bitrate the device will play smoothly, and what the "maximum" resolution for the main profile is (and at what bitrate).
So if you're putting h264 HD material on there, put it in an mp4 container with AAC audio, and use the baseline profile. 10mbit/s worked fine for the 1080p source I tested with (Looney Tunes Short Fur of Flying).

Hi.. THX that is great help.. Very interesting.... .
Do you think that we can expect some 3rd party video player using hardware acceleration of Tegra 2 in Market soon.? Playing .mkv and other HD formats.? Or it is not possible.?
I do not know, but if Tegra 2 will be used in other phones than Optimus 2x ... drivers might be upgraded to support more video types.

RAWrrrRRR!! WHY?? Okay, I kinda get it thanks...
Its a fact that HW acceleration can only be used when/if Nvidia Tegra 2 drivers supports it.
But any app can play any format if it have the right SW decoder (using CPU).
Optimus 2x should be fast enough to play quality video (DVD resolution 720×576) using sole SW decoders

As I said ... "Isn´t Full HD on a mobilephone a total overkill and kind of waste?"
FAT32 SD card can't handle files > 2GB
Maby you could split files and maby Android supports filessystems other than FAT16 and FAT32 ... I don't know
I think it is not a overkill. I don't have any way of getting HD content on my TV (BlueRay, Playstation, etc) so i can sure use this.
Or when I travel I can just plug my phone to the TV in the hotel room and watch the movie.

I agree. This phone has the specs to run it, & space is up to the owner to use. I remember a headline from Engadget stating that the "the 2X has a crazy amount of codecs for video media" when it's released in S. Korea. .mkv is probably the most popular container for HD videos- disappointing the 2X does not support this...

How is it possible to play 1080X1920 on a 480x800 screen?
It might be possible to use 1080X1920 when using HDMI mirror, but then how much space do you have on your phone? And do you want to split files > 2GB?
OK ... if you use hard compression file size drops ... but then quality also drops to something that you can compare with DVD resolution!
What I ment was that I personally prefare a lower resolution in a good quality
DVD resolution 720×576 ajusted to my phone (MPEG4) take up about 1-2GB and I use to have around 6-8 good movies on my 16GB SD card.
I too hope that more formats will be supported ... at the moment its just not good enough ...
optimus 2x supports baseline profile 4.1
basically it means that most of the 720p media files you'll find in the internet won't play smoothly because they are encoded according to high profile or even have been encoded after specifically more quality wise settings
if you need to encode for 2x you basically need software such as handbrake, set on the iphone and ipod touch profile on the right and change the resolution to your preference up to 1920 width and then set the bitrate so that the maximum won't go over 20Mbit
basically avg 15 would be fine though because of the fat32 limitations 4 gigabytes, it would be wise to calculate the bitrate according to the maximum file size
i do not know if Android supports ExtFat, which supports much higher filesizes, but because of the baseline profile limitations it doesn't really make any real difference between 1080p 15kbit/s or 5kbit/s video stream nor does those additional settings in Handbrake software
there is no "almost lossless" settings for optimus 2x, only thing matters is the speed for reencoding the bloody internet

May change (it seems they've actively adding/changing things) but as of a day or two ago, Avia's FAQ says this is not supported. There is a note about DLNA, if the subtitle file is already on the receiving device, and I have no clue if/how that would work for Chromecast, especially since Chromecast is not (yet) a DLNA receiver.
Subtitles are usually rendered on the Player side either from within the stream or via external file like a .srt.
I don't think CCast can ever fully support external .srt since it has no real filesystem of it's own to load the file from.
But the player app could be coded to show subs that are encoded into an MKV or other container that supports embedded SubTitles.
It might be possible that some sources could encode external SRTs into a stream going to a CCast which would probably be what aVia is doing.
Not sure if Plex does this at all since all of my content that requires Subs has been hardcoded into the video by me when encoded for storage on my server.
Plex does however seem to support putting subs into it's transcoded files if the Transcode profile definition is being read correctly by me...
Not sure if that feature is supported on their current CCast player app they are using.
I use handbrake to encode all my videos and set the subtitle option to burned in so I can watch subed anime on my chromecast.

Yup, this seems to be what HBO GO does, unless they have a really precise way of switching Chromecast from one stream to another (possible, that's what streaming media servers do).
I really appreciate the caption support there - makes the late-night viewing much easier, plus my hearing is poor these days.

It's really the best way to do it...The Text from a subtitle adds little to nothing to the Bitrate of a transferring stream, and Why store two versions when you can send one and let the client side decide to use it or not.
The only reason to use a SRT file is if the Video Container doesn't support an embedded Sub stream that can be shut off or if you need a Subtitle for a language not embedded in the Video container. No way to put every language into one Video file.
At least not yet! LOL

I don't think Handbrake supports hardcoding subs.
It does support adding subtitle tracks but I don't see an option to hardcode subs at all...
I admit though that I don't use Handbrake unless my main converter has an issue with a file...
I use Xilisoft since it supports hardcoding subs and I don't need to have multiple subtitle and audio tracks for my library.

I understand that the MKV can not see the subtitles .. but within the mp4 subtitles should be visible, Chromcast handles subtitles, do not believe me? look at this Youtube video Coca-Cola Social Media Guard
Put the subtitle to ON, do not you like the look? Click Options and choose the size you want, the color you want and the background color you want.
For example from the BubbleUPnP program should bring the option to turn ON the subtitles in the MP4, etc.

Still the case. The CC end doesn't support MKV so it's up to the player/ source end to unwrap it, determine what to send and transcode if necessary.

Chromecast supports MKV natively very well as long as it contains supported codecs.
Thanks for the replies guys. Not gonna have a PC for a while, and I hate being so limited. I'll look for proper codecs til I come into cash for a new pc.

Lots of confusion about MKV regarding CCast.
I was under the impression that MKV will STREAM on CCast, it won't direct play but it can be streamed to it easily using MPEG-DASH. Because Streaming a file this way pretty much strips the container entirely and just sends Video and Audio tracks in whatever codec was used inside the container. The CCast has no idea it's actually playing an MKV file so if the Codecs are compatible it will have no problem.
There is no device I know of that supports MKV natively though Hardware decoder. All devices that support it have software decoding and other MKV feature support built into the player itself or require Transcoding.
I know Plex is currently transmuxing and streaming MKV to CCast which is why they now work there.
But I'm betting your Bubble player on the CCast side is much better than theirs is as far as handling containers.
So maybe you can direct play codec compatible files where others need to send via DASH.
In the end the best way to handle MKV would be to have the Player handle most of the features so the only time external help is needed is to flip incompatible codecs.
And by features I mean the following:
Client side Subtitle rendering and selection (difficult on CCast with SRT but easier with Internal Subtitle tracks of MKV)
Audio Track selection
Chapter support
At least until Google adds this capability into the next Gen CCast OS.
one way is to convert your mkv software subtitles to mkv hardware subtitles
I believe the MKVToolsNix package has a tool called MKVMERGE that will insert SRT files into an MKV as a subtitle track.
Just be sure to test the external subtitle to be sure it's good before you do or you could make a mess.
This is one of those must have packages for anyone who like to play in the MKV universe.
