ok, so i get home to flash new serendipty. I did a wipe and flashed the rom but forgot to back up the esf folder even though the program drilled in my head I needed to. Ok so now I assume its gone, heres my question.
does it matter, and how will me not having this file backed up affect me?
Thanks everybody
I also master cleared.....I just would like to know If Im ever even going to need the code again, im not returning the phone to att ever, I dont think so. It seems to be working fine with my t-mobile sim card as well as the att one.
If for some reason I get another sim card, from another carrier im worried I would be prompted for unlock code, which I wouldnt be able to retrieve because I deleted the file...but then wouldnt I just be able to unlock without the code again like I did the first time?
I had used galaxy s unlock and I never got the code, it just followed the steps and rebooted the phone and voila.
thnanks for your time everyone
Use sgs.tools app, secret codes, check your ime and product code. I have never backed up my efs. You should be fine
really appreciate it, thank you
now what is the difference in my unlock rather than a straight up enter the code unlock. As I said I used galaxy s unlocker so I never had to enter a code, but wanted to do it that way, but instead bypassed it completely.
Im just curious as to how exactly does this work? and whether its a "real" unlock or rather just tricking the phone.
I entered the keys to check gsm lock and it is off, however im just wondering
anything else I should know about the esf folder?

Here is the thing. My friend gave me her G1 because her sister locked the phone trying too many times the password (the 3x3 balls thing) and now she cant use the phone. She dosnt know the details of the gmail account because it was from someone, and she cant contact it anymore.
The detail here is that the phone is unrooted, because if it were rooted, all i would need to do is flash a new rom, but since its unrooted, things get a little bit more complex...anyone knows how to unlock the phone?

all you can do is factory reset. otherwise somebody could steal your g1 and unlock it like that.
There is a way by deleting the unlock code file, google for it.
Quick question about unlocking a phone. I used the sgs unlock tool and successfully retrieved the unlock/unfreeze codes (and have them saved on my computer) but not sure what to do now. Going to be flashing a new rom on this phone for the first time and I'm not sure if is should grab a t mobile sim card now and try to unlock it. Or will flashing a new rom mess up the unlock so I should use a t mobile sim after the new flash. And if so, will the unlock reset every time I one-click back to stock and flash a new rom? or is the unlock deeper than the roms and will save itself?
Also do I need to backup the NV_data files. I have read a lot and this still seems pretty confusing for me.
BTW this is a friends captivate, I've been flashing mine for months and I need to go through that whole huge process to repair my NV_data stuff to get my codes again. Which is another question I'll have work on later.
Thanks..

Put in your tmo sim card and it will ask you for the unlock code. Enter it and your phone should be unlocked. And once you unlock it it should stay that way.
will give it a shot. thanks.
I just bought a HTC G1 from an ebay user from USA.(I'm from Romania)
I did a hard reset on the phone and now when I put a sim I need to enter the unlock code and can`t turn wireless on if I chose not to enter the unlock code.
Are there any option on how to unlock the phone without the code, or to get past the 'fresh start' screen?
Two things you can do:
1st, contact the user back that sold you the G1. Ask them to obtain the unlock code from T-Mobile (USA) to send to you.
2nd, you can obtain the unlock code yourself by purchasing the unlock code from one of the site.
There are no option to unlock the phone without the unlock code. (as far as I know)
And what about the activation screen? how can i get past it?
Once you get the unlock code and put it in. You can activate your google account with your data plan. You might have to setup your APN setting thou.
Another thing you might or have to do is downgrade and root your phone. Then flash the custom ROM of your choice.
Done unlocking & activating, now it keeps restarting, what can I do? Also the battery lasts 1 day max
// also the screen remains black when I try to unlock (sometimes)

First you want to find out if you are still on stock or you have a custom ROM on your G1.
If you have stock, then you have to root your G1 first.
If you phone has a custom ROM then you G1 has already been rooted. You can load other ROM that you want.
I tried to update to 1.6 but it says error line 1 etc. all the time.
Please help
I`m on stock & when I try to root it says to force close app
Also, i`m running android 1.5 & marketplace is beta & I can`t see all the stuff
Ohh! Boy here we go. You'll need to downgrade to RC29 (since your G1 is from US). Don't worry about the unlock. Once unlocked it stay unlock.
First you want to get ADB setup on your PC and have it setup with your G1.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=532719
Once you have that going then you can start with the downgrading to RC29. After you have downgraded, you will have to go through the activation screen again.
Once the activation screen is done, then you can do the rooting process.
http://theunlockr.com/2010/04/26/how-to-root-the-htc-g1dream/
After you have rooted, then you can flash the custom ROM.
Done, the phone is rooted but now I have some other issues with it.
First, my earpiece dosen`t work
Second, my screen sometimes dosen`t come 'back to life' when I try to unlock it

this problem
Can anyone help me?
First off: I am a noob, both here and when it comes to rooting/flashing/etc. I am speed-learning out of necessity LOL
I cant seem to unlock my phone's sim card pin no matter what I do... I have a Samsung Galaxy S gt-19000M, it was purchased in Canada and used for years on the Bell Aliant network. I have now moved to Belgium and would like to use this phone with Base network here. I love this phone and would prefer to not have to buy a new one
But of course when I put in a local sim card it asks for a pin code and Bell Alliant refuses to give it to me.
So I rooted the phone with SuperOneClick, and put on busybox (I thought it was installed through SuperOneClick but the galaxy_s unlock app was complaining of busybox errors), terminal emulator, root file browser and titanium backup.
So far I have tried:
-> galaxy_s unlock app
Result: it looked like it worked but no dice
from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7776555#post7776555
-> Hex edit
Result: still asking for pin code after reboot
-> SGS Unlock Tool apk
Result: cant find codes
-> generate unlock code for windows
Result: errors if my phone is connected to the PC, if I copy nv_data.bin into the folder and run it like that it gives me a code that did not work (20404)
from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=8942669&postcount=94
-> attempted setting the pin to "12345678" (it asked for 8 digits)
Result: the inserted pin didnt work
GalaxSim still says it's locked and sounds like the pro version would work but I cant try any paid apps since the only sim card it accepts doesnt have an account attached to it anymore so I have no compatible sim card with a phone account that could be used to pay for an app...
So....... 2 of 3 pin attempts used up and not sure what to do short of a full factory reset >_<
I then did a factory reset, doesn't reset the pin code attempts (of course), galaxy_s unlock and sgs unlock tool still wont work
Now I downloaded a factory rom and am considering to learn how to flash the phone >_>
Fingers crossed I don't brick it!
My question: Am I missing something?
Did I skip something really noobishly obvious?
Please someone tell me I made a stupid mistake and make this all go away!!
Please? >_>
EDIT:
Ok so I'm a noob alright... I think I have been trying stuff for the wrong model -_-
Which means this is probably posted in the wrong forum section too, I'm sorry...
Back to square one I go
So, basically, I got a new pay-as-you-go SIM and I don't want to buy a new phone for it. I was looking for methods to unlock my current galaxy ace, it's rooted and I have a custom ROM on it- The Ultimatum by The "A" Factor. I got my unlock codes and put the SIM in expecting to get a screen saying phone is locked, please put in unlock code or something similar that usually happens. However nothing came up but when the phone finished booting, I had no service and can't use it for calls or anything which suggests that the phone is still locked, I tried using the *#7465525# service code, but I got an error saying no service or incorrect MUDI code or something like that. Is it possible that flashing a new ROM wiped the unlocking procedures and is there anyway for me to know if my phone is unlocked and if not, can I still unlock it?

Didn't show you nothing to introduce the code?¿
... try introducing another SIM from other carrier... when you boot then automatically should ask you to introduce the unlock code
If it doesn't work you could phone to the device's carrier, the carrier must help you if you finished your contract

I do have another SIM from another carrier, but the screen isn't showing up, I've been scouring the internet and found http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1335548 , turns out it won't show because of my ROM, so I'll have to switch to stock like you said, before I do that though I'll try that code he said at the end to see if it will unlock. Thanks :good:
