If you wanna backup messages then just use smsbackuprestore from the market. No need for room.

My girlfriend has the Captivate but is annoyed with how it runs. Buggy, laggy, battery etc. I told her she has 2 options, either get the official 2.2 update or have me put in Serendipity 6.3 for her. Problem she wants Serendipity but for whatever reason, she doesn't want me to root her... smh! Does an android phone need to be rooted in order to be flashed?

It doesn't HAVE to be rooted, you can just put the clockwork recovery update.zip on sd card, reinstall packages twice and flash the rom
That being said...you would need to root before flashing to use titanium backup to backup all her stuffs. Also any custom rom will be rooted after the flash.
If she doesn't want root at all seems like shes going with the official update...
Thanks a million! Appreciate it!

Remember to laugh at her when she decides she hates stock and doesn't mind rooting to get serendipity.
If she thinks 2.1 is laggy and buggy, her updating to 2.2 will be just the ticket you need for a green light on root and new rom.

You will have to flash your stock rom. It's available here on xda. I recommend using a windows 7 pc and a program called odin3 1.7. Don't worry too much, there's lots of insructions. Read everything twice.
Hi folks,
So I managed to brick my Tab last night after too much system tampering and experimenting.
I can still access download mode and recovery so hopefully Odin can sort me out.....................................
BUT.........STUPID ASS ME never made note of the exact firmware that my tab was running!!!! And as now I cant get into the Tabs settings obviously I cant retrieve it!?
Does anyone know the exact firmware number that a UK GTP1010 bought a month ago will be running? Or does anyone have one that they can check for me?
Hey did you get a response to this? I have one and can check,

I've updated to gingerbread threw kies and it started to reboot and freeze by itself. Is there any way to solve this problem or shall I flash a different software. I need sgs users opinion which firmware is the most stable or how to solve the reboot thing
Thanks a lot

Personally I was a noob on SGS cause I was on HTC too.. If you go on to youtube, theres a guy called 'androidgalaxys' on his videos he shows how to update to 2.3.4 its the official update too and that is very very stable and very fast. The file you download uses odin to flash.. He talks you through it. I hope this helps.

Thanks a lot for your help. Maybe you know what is causing those random reboots and freezes as far as I know people have them on many different firmwares. But if you recommend I'll try it.

Im afraid I dont. If you message that guy on youtube. He is very knowledgeable.

I need to return my phone to out of the box fresh. I've been reading and searching and I'm finding info about Odin and MJ5, but I'm not sure which I need to do. The only thing I've done to my phone is root it (then unroot it) with Kingo. I unrooted it, so I could apply the stock 4.4.2 upgrade, but it fails. So now I want to return it to its original state so I can try the upgrade again. I want to keep it close to stock, because I need to use phone encryption so I can use it for work as well. I really need someone to point me in the right direction.

Thanks!! It's really involved, but I completed and it and now my phone is running 4.4. If anyone else tries it, makes sure you follow every step.
This my sound like a dumb question, but I am going to as any way. I bought a used note 3 and the previous owner had rooted it and installed saftystrap and installed a rom to the stock slot but made no back up. I searched but could not find stock 4.2.2 firmware. Any one know where I could find it. My phone is working great but would still like the option of having the stock files just incase. thanks in advance for the help.
