So im thinking of picking one of these up, and can buy from dell directly and get a pretty good discount through my employer. I am wondering if these are going to be like the galaxy tab and not be able to use a voice and data plan sim. I dont want to add a line, or go prepaid for the data plans. Any thoughts

The Streak 7 does not have voice calling, only VOIP. There are ways around it with Google Talk, but you will have to see the phone.apk thread and follow the lengthy instructions. For all intents and purposes though, the answer is no. The data plan from T-Mobile is 49.99 a month for UNLIMITED or 39.99 if you are an existing customer.

You are correct. Voice plans do not work on the Streak 7. You have to have a data plan. This was a major bummer for me. I use a prepaid voice plan. On my Streak 5, I could buy a day pass for data for $1.50. That doesn't work on the 7. Technical support said that the network detects this device as a data device because it sends a mac address to the network rather than an IMEI(?) number. So you must buy the weekly or monthly prepaid data plans to use data on the device. I use mine mostly at home, so all I need is the occassional day pass, but no can do.

It does also send an IMEI by the way, but it also sends the MAC address, just as all phones with internet capabilities do. If you open up the door on the side you will see the IMEI number for you device.

One big disadvantage of not having a voice and data line on it and them making it web only (webconnect) = NO ROAMING OF ANY KIND! It's t-mobile native service or nothing. It doesn't even work on t-mobile affiliates like i wireless. (who has aws 3g running in areas).
I buy this tablet to have internet access everywhere, but end up using the wifi hotspot of my hd2 when i travel. Grrr!

Im getting this delivered today, would it benefit me to put my Voice/data plan sim in it or keep the web connect sim in it?

I think I have read elsewhere in the S7 forums that a voice/data SIM will not work. Hiya have to have the data only SIM included wither the S7. I think...

Youre right might voice data sim won't work. I did how ever get outbound calling working. But can't figure out inbound calling.

Data Plan questions...

So, AT&T kills you on a monthly data plan, unlimited for $40 a month are there any alternatives for getting a monthly data plan or do I specifically need to go through AT$T for that service?
Also, I use the "No Data" feature which is awesome by the way to essentially turn off the data to and from my phone, I use WIFI. Someone sent me a text message the other day that I did not receive I assume because I have the data turned off on my phone, as planned.
Is there a way to get around this, t receive messages when connected via WIFI or is that specific to the data plan associated with AT$T?

u do not need to turn off your connection when using wifi. when you have wifi turned on and properly connected, all data usage will be through wifi so no charges. your phone calls and txt will still come through normally. you can call/email att to confirm, i did. plus you can also check your usage online and it will show no charges for anytime you are using the internet through wifi.

That would be the best choice if you want to have data wherever you go for less then the DataConnect plan.

I've been using it for a while now, and I use quite a bit of bandwidth a month, (IMplus / Tethering pretty much all the time) and it works great.

I've heard this before, I pay $39.99 for MediaNet unlimilted...so how do you get it so cheaply? The tethering can be done with ease but getting caught could encurr the wrath of ATT $$$$$ !

Its unlimited Data /w only 200 texts a month.

I know I have the option of downgrading to MediaMax Unlimited online (account access) but I've contacted AT&T and they told me this is not supported so I'm a little leary to change it and have it cost me in the end. How long have you been using this? If it works fine I'll just downgrade and see what happens.

I've been using it for about 2 years now since I got a flip phone with a browser.
I've talked to AT&T about it and they do "frown" upon not using a dataconnect plan with a PDA but I've been using it with the HTC for 3 months and nothing has happened, plus I would just say that I have a flip phone that I can only use medianet on, and that I switch my sim to that from time to time.

The tilt will automatically connect/work with MediaNet.
The PDAconnect / Dataconnect plans will still get you on edge/3g, its just a fancy, more costly way of getting you there.
MediaNet will do the same... and you dont need a tethering plan with the tilt because, well, you have a tilt.

I think I might no longer be confused ... MediaMax is still a service offered through AT&T (https://www.wireless.att.com/media/cingular_video_purchase) at a reduced rate...
So, you can't get an external data plan from another vendor for your phone although @ $20 bones I think that falls in line with everyone else's plans.

Hopefully someone may know the answer to my question. My wife has a POS Blackberry Flip 8220. It's on its last legs so I got her a G1 on eBay. Everything I read said I would have to switch to an Android data plan but when I put her SIM in the G1 everything was working with a 3G signal.
Is that something that will only work until they catch on? Or should it continue to work?

Do tell... WHAT is an "android" data plan?
Android phones do NOT require any special data provisions. ANY GENERIC DATA PLAN is fine.

Well T-Mobile used to have a Blackberry unlimited data plan. with unlimited messages for $34.99 and an Android unlimited data plan with unlimited messages for $34.99. Those have been replaced with the Even More plans. But my wife still has the grandfathered Blackberry plan. Everyone I've asked said the data wouldn't work because of the APNs and even if it did T-Mobile would be able to tell I was using a G1 on a Blackberry data plan and they would shut it down.
I was just wondering if anyone had used a blackberry data plan successfully in the past or are still using one. If I have to change anything the plan will go up $10 ($30 for data and $15 for unlimited text)

I took my wife from a BB to a Nexus One. No calls to T Mobile and our bill started showing two Android Data Plans. Same thing.... no need to call unless her data suddenly acts funky.

That's good news. Of course when she tries to upgrade to the mytouch slide soon then we may have to deal with that.

Three things to say about this;
1) RIM phones require *extra* provisions, but still require the STANDARD provisions, therefore a RIM-compatible data plan will work with any phone, but a regular data plan won't work with a RIM phone. This is a matter of RIM phones being horribly crippled and VERY VERY poorly designed.
2) Anything between you and YOUR CARRIER has nothing to do with this forum. I suggest you consult your carrier for instructions on this.
3) You never even mentioned what carrier you were using, therefore NOBODY could possibly make any reasonable guess about what their responses will be.

few things to note...
1, if your using Tmobile, i know enough to answer your questions,
- blackberries have their own server farms for data (email especially, but all data for a blackberry goes through a "blackberry" channel.
- androids, also have their own seperate channels or farms that handle all of their data,
however, if you have any data plan, and simply pop your sim into any smartphone, it should work for a while, until your connection gets a time failure, or gets red flagged for requesting (or getting) too much bandwidth.
this is known as blackballing, and you can even trick the system sometimes, by putting your sim back in your old phone, calling tmo, and telling them to open mtas, (or something like that) and addressing that connection (tier 3 can do it in about 5 minutes if they know wtf is up).
but for this channelized crap to work, they are separating the non-tmobile brand phones, into a more simplified system for them...
this way, i guess, when blackberries have a massive outage (like when the Storm was released, and every storm on the planet had to get updated, and that killed all the servers, all the blackberries had no-connection at all, for about 3 days...)
my point, is if one system fails, at least other clients (with other phones) are not effected.
sofar, my g1 has been very reliable and fast with out any data plan at all.
screw their overpriced data, and run wifi.
older, sneaky people were using tzones to get full data plan for 10bucks, and just calling in every 2 weeks to get their MTAS updated, or unlocked...
thats been resolved by now, but hopefully you get the picture. and i havent confused anyone,

it should fail at some point, and you don't want RIM or blackberry to handle android stuff anyways.
get the android plan, but before you do, go to www.google.com and search for " speedtest " and compare your actual speeds before and after the switch.
would be interesting if there was a huge diference.

Apps for Free Wifi Landline Calling?

I'm having trouble finding it, all the sips I've tried doesn't work on landlines, anyone successfully been able to call a landline/cellphone # with your sip service? (free?)
The reason for this is because I forget my phone in my other half's purse and when she goes home I forget to take it out, so I'm stuck with no phone :'(
I USE to be able to do this on sipdroid, so if anyone links me to sipdroid, it no longer works anymore because they make you pay for it now. Thanks in advance guys!

I may have misunderstood your question, but I use Groove IP to make WiFi calls to any U.S. phone (landline or cellphone) for FREE. It uses your Google Voice account. It costs $3.99 in the Amazon App store (was $1.99 a couple of weeks ago). The phone doesn't even need to have a cell plan, just WiFi. We use it as a home phone on a G1 that has no cell service.

I really really don't care whether its with VOIP or WIFI or UMA but I've always had unlimited minutes on my lines and until about a year ago I dropped all data on both my mytouch 3g slide and my tmob g1 and then again on my bb 8520, they wouldn't allow me to have a bb plan an a android plan on the same line so eventually I got the unlimited 2g service for 9.99 and then shortly after they dropped it!
The only thing that bugs me despite the fact I keep the 9.99 on my line because it works just fine for phones hardware thats only provisioned with EDGE hardware/despite the OS... but I should have added the unlimited free wifi calling for another 9.99 because if i'd had changed my minutes from unlimited to regulated?? I'd have received overages like crazy even though 99% of the time I"m on uma or wifi calling!

Data Only Nexus 5 - Starting At $15/Month

I have seen an uprising in the amount of threads regarding data only plans for the Nexus 5. I currently use this model and I thought I would share my input. First you are not going to be able to get a T-Mobile tablet sim and put it in your Nexus 5. T-Mobile looks up IMEI numbers when a device connects to their tower. They see a non-tablet device on their network and bam you get the upsell page. A counter to this is Red Pocket Mobile. Red Pocket Mobile uses T-Mobile towers (MVNO), but doesn't use these strict data only on tablets rules. I will below run down my cost and services that I personally use. Also Red Pocket Mobile has 3GB and 5GB data plans if you need extra data. This cheap plan is for people that use very little data. If you want to tether all day then this plan isn't right for you unless you get one of the Unlimited 3G or 5GB data plans.
Skype - $2.99/Month Unlimited Calls
LocalPhone - $0.99/Month DID Number
Red Pocket Mobile - $10/Month (1GB Data)
Total - $13.98
So I use LocalPhone for my DID Number, which is basically a virtual local phone number that I can forward to my sip address. This is used to receive calls. In Google Voice I simply add this DID number as one of the phone numbers to forward calls to. This allows someone to call me through Google Voice and have my SIP address being triggered. I use Skype simply because it is very easy to use in my opinion. I also like being able to make calls from my computer when I need to. You can easily replaced this with a LocalPhone subscription ($1.60 for 800 Minutes). I use Skype strictly for outgoing calls. I recommend Skype for outgoing because the Nexus 5 doesn't appear to have noise cancellation when using SIP. You can use a SIP client, but I prefer to use the stock dialer to receive and look at past calls. This plan works for people that use little data every month. I am connected to wifi all the time, so I don't use much of my carriers data. If you need to have more data the T-Mobile $30 5GB prepaid plan is probably best for you. This is simply for budget users that would like to save more money because they use less data than others.

your pros arent very good. $10 per gb data kinda sucks, and tmobile doesnt charge for tethering as well.

well, if you don't talk that much (mostly text messages/data browsing), and want to pay minimal for a cellular connection just so that people can contact you, you choices would be
1) Republic Wireless $10 unlimited cell only (or $15 cell + 3G data)
2) Ting $6/month base fee + usage fees
but if you dislike the Sprint network, then you have
3) this $10/1GB plan
4) t-mobile $30/month 5GB + 100 min + unl text
and if you dislike the t-mobile network, you have
5) AIO $25/month cell only, $35/month 500MB data
6) StraightTalk $30/month 100MB or $45/month for 3GB
i'm sure people fit into different categories based on their usage patterns / budget
and seeing that at&t charges you between $15-$67/GB for data (depending on your data bucket and overages), $10/GB on t-mobile doesn't see that bad

While I highly concur with you in that the built-in Android SIP client needs lots of love from Google and it’s not that great (but it does work), “in this day and age” why bother without LTE? It’s FAST and has far less latency than HSPA and 3G, which is important when doing voice over data networks.

In my city LTE runs at the same speed as HSPA+. They also have very similar latencies when tested. Both LTE and HSPA+ max at 15 mbps in my city (Fort Myers, FL). So I honestly see no difference. Like people have mentioned this is for people that want a cheap plan. The $30 T-Mobile 5GB plan is great if you use a lot of data. Some people like myself use their phone minimally on their data network. I use my phone a lot, but mostly when on wi-fi. The only time I need data is when I am not connected to wi-fi and need to be able to receive calls through Google Voice. I have wi-fi at my job and home, so that is a large percent of the time I use data. If I am at another individuals home I simply ask for the wi-fi password.

USA Carrier Test[Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, Google Fi]

This is the first time I have ever posted anything so please excuse the lack of formatting or "neatness."
First of all I want to say that every test I have done was done for a period of 3 days with each of these carriers. The test involved taking the cell phone to the city(Raleigh, NC) to a more rural area(literally anywhere not Raleigh) to test for signal strength differences, voice, and sms. Also, the phone I used is the North American model not the tencent model.
The reason I even did this is because I do not want let go of my Verizon SIM card(I still won't but there is a different reason why at the end)
OK so with that being said let's talk FUNCTIONALITY: ASUS(I have a screenshot of this) is telling me to read in between the lines and that they will push for VoLTE and VoWIFI with USA Carriers AFTER they shut down their 2g/3g Services. However right now VOLTE & VOWIFI DO NOT WORK WITH ANY CARRIER IN THE USA. The closest thing you can get to VOWIFI/VOLTE.
Verizon: Full 4G Support, Data speed and reliability FAR exceed that of AT&T or T-Mobile in RURAL areas of NC. VOICE CALLS AND TEXT MESSAGES DO NOT WORK ON VERIZON. If you absolutely need to stick to Verizon I have a functional work-around but it does take some time to set up(at the end of post)
AT&T: Full 4G,H+,1X Support. VOICE CALLS, TEXT, DATA ALL WORK ON AT&T. If you are not tied to any carrier, I would recommend using AT&T or the best MVNO it has: Good2GO. It is on par with T-Mobile in the city, and also works fine in rural areas.
T-Mobile: Full 4G,H+,1X Support. VOICE CALLS, TEXT, DATA ALL WORK ON T-Mobile. I do not recommend this unless you only live in the city and only stay in the city. Rural areas are a no-go for T-Mobile in NC(if you want more specific about which rural areas were tested lmk, but this is mostly central NC)
So I came from Verizon. What is holding me there or why would I recommend you keep it? Well, if you have a current family plan on Verizon with unlimited data, you may want to consider this too, although it is inconvenient.
Reasons to keep Verizon: Unlimited 4G LTE Data plan or an MVNO from Verizon all offer the *MOST RELIABLE* 4G LTE connection. This means that there will rarely be a place without 4G LTE on. The next best thing is AT&T, and although you may not get 4G in as many places as Verizon, it is pretty damn close. Bonus from AT&T is you can actually make calls and text, but wait.... what about 100% Verizon?
IF you reached this spot it is because you want to know the ONLY currently FUNCTIONAL workaround for this problem with no VOLTE VOWIFI or Calls or texts. The solution is to set up call forwarding to a free google voice number from the my verizon app. While you are there, you may as well want to bookmark a webpage in chrome or your browser of choice for text messages. Verizon offers a free service where you can check your texts online. This was originally intended for looking at texts on your computer, but who said you can't use it on your phone?
However, I, cannot stand the idea of being in an emergency where the 4G signal from verizon is too low to make a google voice call, and that I NEED to call someone. Therefore what I am doing is the following: Setting up the Verizon workaround for forwarding calls to the google number, setting up the text message workaround on verizon, and STILL getting an emergency $10/mo AT&T MVNO plan that has unlimited text and calls(Good2go mobile).
other AT&T MVNO's charge way more for that feature by the way. I am usually always travelling, so the amount of times I will be without 4G LTE from any carrier(T-mobile, AT&T, or Verizon) is increased exponentially. I need that backup failsafe with the AT&T MVNO.
With that being said though, if you're wondering why I didn't mention google fi, it is because this sim card 100% did not work at all in this cell phone. I tried changing the APN's and everything else under the sun but it simply did not work. Big bummer since I was hoping this would be my next daily driver for a carrier.

However right now VOLTE & VOWIFI DO NOT WORK WITH ANY CARRIER IN THE USA. The closest thing you can get to VOWIFI/VOLTE.
Verizon: Full 4G Support, Data speed and reliability FAR exceed that of AT&T or T-Mobile in RURAL areas of NC. VOICE CALLS AND TEXT MESSAGES DO NOT WORK ON VERIZON. If you absolutely need to stick to Verizon I have a functional work-around but it does take some time to set up(at the end of post)
AT&T: Full 4G,H+,1X Support. VOICE CALLS, TEXT, DATA ALL WORK ON AT&T. If you are not tied to any carrier, I would recommend using AT&T or the best MVNO it has: Good2GO. It is on par with T-Mobile in the city, and also works fine in rural areas.
T-Mobile: Full 4G,H+,1X Support. VOICE CALLS, TEXT, DATA ALL WORK ON T-Mobile. I do not recommend this unless you only live in the city and only stay in the city. Rural areas are a no-go for T-Mobile in NC(if you want more specific about which rural areas were tested lmk, but this is mostly central NC)
So I came from Verizon. What is holding me there or why would I recommend you keep it? Well, if you have a current family plan on Verizon with unlimited data, you may want to consider this too, although it is inconvenient.
Reasons to keep Verizon: Unlimited 4G LTE Data plan or an MVNO from Verizon all offer the *MOST RELIABLE* 4G LTE connection. This means that there will rarely be a place without 4G LTE on. The next best thing is AT&T, and although you may not get 4G in as many places as Verizon, it is pretty damn close. Bonus from AT&T is you can actually make calls and text, but wait.... what about 100% Verizon?
IF you reached this spot it is because you want to know the ONLY currently FUNCTIONAL workaround for this problem with no VOLTE VOWIFI or Calls or texts. The solution is to set up call forwarding to a free google voice number from the my verizon app. While you are there, you may as well want to bookmark a webpage in chrome or your browser of choice for text messages. Verizon offers a free service where you can check your texts online. This was originally intended for looking at texts on your computer, but who said you can't use it on your phone?
However, I, cannot stand the idea of being in an emergency where the 4G signal from verizon is too low to make a google voice call, and that I NEED to call someone. Therefore what I am doing is the following: Setting up the Verizon workaround for forwarding calls to the google number, setting up the text message workaround on verizon, and STILL getting an emergency $10/mo AT&T MVNO plan that has unlimited text and calls(Good2go mobile).
other AT&T MVNO's charge way more for that feature by the way. I am usually always travelling, so the amount of times I will be without 4G LTE from any carrier(T-mobile, AT&T, or Verizon) is increased exponentially. I need that backup failsafe with the AT&T MVNO.
With that being said though, if you're wondering why I didn't mention google fi, it is because this sim card 100% did not work at all in this cell phone. I tried changing the APN's and everything else under the sun but it simply did not work. Big bummer since I was hoping this would be my next daily driver for a carrier.

Yes, didn't work

So this is all true for the international version, but not for the Tencent edition. Tencent version only supports bands 1-4 and pretty much nothing else. Those are the old school bands for AT&T and TMobile, so signal is ok but not great. Indoors TMobile is pretty bad with the Tencent phone, whereas I get fantastic signal with my OnePlus 7 pro in the same places on TMobile.
Damn shame, other than that the rog2 is better in every way and I'm going to miss it dearly but I've got a 1 year old and not having a cell signal at home or work is not an option.

I'm considering this method as well. I'm a trucker, so network coverage is a deal breaker for which carrier I use, and no one comes close to Verizon. My big concern now is how 911 would work. I know I couldn't do it via Google Voice, but I'm wondering if the phone would default back to the phone radio and seek out a usable network. I know cell phones are required be able to make 911 calls from any available network in the U.S, even if not activated with a carrier. So would the phone make a 911 call via AT&T or TMO?
If I go through with it, I may do it a slightly different way. I have a spare line I could cancel. Instead, I may activate the ROG II to that one, then port my existing number to GV. That way I could use GV but as my current number. I figure that would be easiest on those with my contact info.

Its a dual sim phone. Why not have Verizon and a GSM MVPN? Straight talk has some call only plans for $20/month.

And what happens when the gsm(3g) gets turned off in beginning of 2020? Asus seriously f'd up not allowing volte.

No, I had no real issues with AT&T, it's the reason I'm getting my 2nd sim to be an MVNO for this phone. 1 Carrier only AT&T is simply the best overall for this phone. If we say Verizon is 100% 4G LTE strength/reliabililty, then AT&T is like 90%, while AT&T is 60%. This is of course in more rural areas. In the city it matters not if you have AT&T or T-Mobile...

I'm afraid you can't use the app it just doesn't work I tried this... maybe it'll work for you though? Otherwise yes, they would get a call from another number(the google number) and they can call either your google number or verizon number and both will work. it's more of there so you don't inconvenience your contacts, but you should probably tell them you simply switched to (google number) and to just call/text there if you're sticking to verizon only, imo.
otherwise yes the app itself only needs data it doesnt matter if you grab data from ethernet(works), 4G, or wifi...

Technically speaking 911 SHOULD work, but I'm not about to get in trouble trying that one out LOL. I have a backup emergency cell phone line for those emergencies since I also, cannot stand not being able to have that option even if the chances are slim. I am also keeping Verizon because it simply has the strongest 4G signal of the USA carriers that I tested, however AT&T isn't too far behind it's definitely good, just not great. AT&T gets calls and texts by default too so theres that as well lol

I may consider this as well. I'll likely run it Verizon only with the work around and see how it goes before adding a second SIM.
As for 911, I think I may be able to contact a local 911 operator and see what info I can glean from them.

I mean I tried the app on the current phone I have with wifi calling off and airplane mode on, and had someone text me and I got it.

Hey, so I've tried everything I read online to forward my calls to Google voice. I have Verizon. I've tried both *72 and *73. I've made sure to not have any forwarding set up on GV so I'm not in an infinite forwarding loop. But no matter what, it seems the calls straight to GV voicemail. Is there something I'm missing? I've also tried it with my Verizon number linked and after I deleted it. Any help would be much appreciated. thank you

I called Verizon and had them forward my calls to my GV # and it works fine.

What app are you using for GV calls? Google Voice app doesn't ring for me...

Try restarting your phone. Sometimes GV gets buggy for some unknown reason. I also have Hangouts and Hangouts dialer downloaded so Google assistant can make calls when I ask. I believe GV can dial out through dialer as well.
And make sure to allow GV and any other calling app you're using to auto start in your phone settings.
