When I had my iPhone I downloaded an application that simply turned off the 3g radio when the phone was asleep. It would switch to 2g for standby and when woken again the 3g would activate. This saved a ton of battery for me during standby. Is there such an app like this for Android? Ive done a little searching but can find nothing other then wifi sleep and 3g scheduling. I'm getting great battery life but would like to squeeze a little more out of my Captivate. Any help is appreciated!

EDIT: Have you tried Juice defender?
EDIT2: Now that I'm thinking about it..... I would like that as it would change not only data but vouce to 2g(GSM) so if I were to get a voice call while in 2g... it would more than likely continue that way once answered... and IMHO the voice quality on 3g is superior.

It was very nice. I had 2g sleep state to save battery but still had 3g for data and calls.

Well... like I said.... juicedefender has that option.... you could try that out....
I was reading up about Juicedefender on some site earlier. It said it was only a scheduler to turn the 3g on and off at specific times. From the sounds of it theres a few apps out there that do the same thing, I guess ill have to download it and see for myself.
I think there's an app that does what you are looking for called superpower, try googling that or market search it. Hope it works out for you

Juice Defender switches off mobile data, not switches to Edge. It does save battery though.

Thanks guys, this has what I was looking for. I looked over a thread for this app months ago but didnt do to much more with it. It works well but the 30 second delay to switch to 2g isnt to intriguing. Ill play with it more though, its just what I needed. It sucks when you go to shoot a quick text though and have to wait on the data to reactivate though

My battery sometimes runs out early on me, so I installed JuiceDefender. It significantly increased my batteries life, BUT some times it will randomly kill my radio completely. I don't know unless I check my phone, but it displays the X where the bars are. This is extremely inconvenient. Does anyone else know a similar app or a fix to this problem?

I think so, but my 3g never works... I'm using a T-Mobile phone on the ATT network. And it won't come back on until I shut the phone off then back on.

Disable the option to automaticaly enable and disable data or 3g connection
Ever since upgrading to ATT ICS, my WiFi and Mobile Data connections both are turned on during the night. During the day, I don't run either. When I am at home, I use WiFi and then turn WiFi off and plug in the charger before I sleep. When I wake up in the morning, WiFi and Mobile Data are turned ON. This happens constantly for me.
The second thing I tried was not putting the phone on the charger for the night. Come the next morning, WiFi is ON but Mobile Data remained off.
Something is triggering WiFi and Mobile Data to automatically turn on. I can't seem to find the setting that is allowing this to happen.
With GB, I never had this issue. If I recall correctly, GB had a setting for the sleep period of the phone. I don't remember much else of what was adjustable in that menu and I can't remember if I set anything in there for GB and data. I cannot find anything remotely like that in ICS. ICS is bloody annoying me right now with these quirks.
I wish I could downgrade back to GB right now so I don't have to deal with data turning on during the course of the night.......
If you want to go back to gb look under the development tab for return to GB from ics. It's down a ways. Not sure what to tell you about the other issues but to try and reflash ics.

Try Airplane Mode
Sounds like you have some app trying to make a connection to run an update. It's turning on WiFi and/or the Mobile Data connections. I'll check mine tonight to see what happens.
Try turning on the Airplane mode when you go to bed. Hold down the power button and select the Airplane Mode option. If that doesn't keep the radios off, something is really wrong.
I sometimes use the Airplane mode at night to conserve the battery, but since you're charging, that's not an issue.

I found the thread. Thanks. I just need to read about unlocking the bootloader now before proceeding. The only downside of downgrading is I will lose the ICS radio which is giving me such good signal strength. Before in my room at home, I would get 1 bar, now I get 2 or 3. LULz.

This happened since day 1 of upgrading to ICS. The only software that I installed were some games and utilities that I had on GB. I never had an issue with either data connection turning on.
I might try another flash of ICS but that would mean running it for a night without the downloaded software for a couple nights and then installing each one by one, night by night.
I can use airplane mode but not for long term. I need to be able to receive calls from work when issues arise during the 2nd and 3rd shifts.
This only happens at night. It never happens during the day which makes me believe something is happening during the phone sleep time. And there's no setting that I can find for the phone sleep time like GB. Grr.....
Why not just leave data on if u don't mind me asking. Can't be using that much data really

I have observed the data icon appear on the stroke of midnight. It takes three attempts to keep it off till the next time I use it, or when the damn thing turns back on at 23:59:59.
Spoke to HTC support, they advised to return it to retailer for them to examine it....WTF...lol

We have two threads on this issue of WiFi and/or Data turning on at midnight. When I first found the missing voice dialer problem, I e-mailed HTC support. They responded to my e-mail and then a member of their escalation team called me. They recognize that this is an ICS upgrade issue. Of course, they don't know when it will be fixed.
If you have not already done so, log into HTC.com, go to Support and send an e-mail describing the problem. They need as much feedback as we can give them to get HTC and/or Google to fix these problems.
I am not surprised that the ICS upgrade broke some things, but the number of things surprises me.
Check your setting. Drop the drop bar and enable Wi-Fi connection then touch the bar next to the off-on switch. Touch the icon next to the home icon on the bottom of the phone and click on advanced. See the screen shots.

Too bad. I noticed mine came on the first night after I installed ICS. Took awhile to find the settings I posted. When I found the settings and clicked on the one in the picture I never noticed Wi-Fi come on on its own since.
So I finally got around to trying Airplane mode. WiFi still kicks on overnight while plugged in.
vivid x2 - I had that checked to "Never" and I still have WiFi and Mobile Data coming on at night.
brucegil & FPV-GT - I will submit a support email ticket. I'm surprised there aren't more of us on here that are having this issue.
syrkel - I don't want either WiFi or Mobile Data on. If I'm not using it, why have it activated? All I need during the night is 2G voice so I can respond to work issues that may arise.
Just throwing another thing to look into. Try to reset the data counter and check it every few hours to see what apps are using the wi-fi data? Some of the apps even allow you to access the app settings from there as well. Check some of the app permissions and try disabling a few apps at a time that allow changes to wi-fi settings.
what a coincidence. i was just jacking around on my phone in class and found the advanced wifi option and there is a setting to keep wifi on during sleep. it has three options: always, only when plugged in, and never. hope this helps
Try installing a juice defender. It turns off data when your screen is off automatically. Also, (maybe only in the paid versions) you can set a night schedule for it to disable connectivity for a set time automatically. I have mine disable all data connections and go to silent mode from 12:30 to 8:30.

I tested this last night. Before I went to bed, I turned off WiFi (Data remained on). On the WiFi advanced settings I had the Keep Wi-Fi on During Sleep setting to "Always," which is the opposite of what people here have mentioned. I plugged in the charger. However, I have my Vivid set to remain on while on the charger. So it technically never went to sleep. (Makes a nice night light.) At 2:30 a.m. when I woke up, the WiFi was not on.
Tonight I will keep the same settings, but I will not put it on the charger (I'm testing the 3400 mAh Mugen extended battery). I will see if the WiFi comes on during the night.

I wonder if this is part of Googles data collection. I have gone through 3 vivid phones in the last 2 weeks (long story). I have seen this problem happen with no apps other than what came with the phone. My wifes phone (another vivid) does the same thing. If the phone is turned off for the night, turning the phone back on has the same results (mobile data is on). This seems to be a random problem.
When you allow Google's locaton service part of the message says that you are allowing Google to collect data even when no apps are running.
Just a thought.

Mine does to, but I don't have it set to "always", since I kind of prefer it that way. I'll give it a shot to see what the results are. Do you notice any difference between the two settings, as far as how long it stays active and on?

FYI - "Always on" seems to be working fine for me. I turned my screen off about an hour ago, and just connected into the system via Cerberus. In the past, wifi would have shut off within a few minutes and I would get a connection timeout warning. So maybe your unit is having issues with it. I've also only lost MAYBE 1% in battery power, so I think I will leave mine in this state as opposed to disabling wifi on sleep.
I have this problem on some of my devices on 1 of my wife access points but not the other. I believe I could possibly tweak some settings on the access point as I don't believe it is the android device. I use an app called WIFI Fixer and that keeps things working.

Happening on multiple devices. Try advanced WiFi lock on the market. Its one of the first apk's I install and always works.

Yes. How much depends on how many apps you have set for auto-updates, I suppose. If you're running several games and social networking apps and they're set for auto-updates, you'll experience a battery drain from them checking for updates every 5 minutes. How much, I can't say. I still don't have my Nexus 7. But if your device drops off the WiFi signal, those apps will know that there is no data connection and not try to update until there is one.
Not to change the subject of the thread, but if I see one more <sigh> I'm going to snap.

As I mentioned, "always on" is working fine for me. Tested it over a period of a few hours. Even moved from one AP to another (ie: work to home), and it auto joined the new wlan.
Battery drain is very minimal in my case. Maybe 0.5-1% an hour, if that.
Yeah but then the apps can't update. IMHO, if you don't want constantly-updating apps, don't enable them to.. If they are checking as often as you think, I would find a different app which gives you what you want but doesn't do that sillyness..
I keep Wi-Fi on 24/7 on all my devices. GPS and BlueTooth too.
I *REFUSE* to let my device "run my life". I find a way to make my battery life happy, and still enjoy my devices. I disable all of the other senseless crap like Facebook or FriendStream, or bloatware-apps.. I don't EVER use an app like ATK or JuiceDefender, or if I do, I only use it instantly to kill an app and then I make it kill itself too. In my 3+ years experience with Android and 30+ devices, I've found that a LOT of apps will TRY to restart even if you kill them. Imagine ATK killing an app, it restarting, ATK auto-killing it again, it restarting again, ATK re-killing it AGAIN, loop()... get my point? Uninstall the problem app and/or find a similar one which doesn't treat your device like it's own playground..

I want to use my table as a phone via VOIP when I travel, need to get incoming 'phone' calls.
That app is coming across in play as not compatible with the N7 ? <darn> <grin?>
I use my Nexus 7 as a speaker phone so had to set "Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep" to "Always". Easy fix.

Now rooted and still trying... still keeps auto-turning-off !
This might be a defect in your units. I have gone many, many hours (12+) with my unit in standby mode without it losing wifi connection. It will also continue to sync with email, etc. during this time (and provide audio notifications).
I only lose .5-1%/hour, so I've left it "always on".
I'm having the same issue. On overnight sleep, the wifi is off when I turn it on. It won't reconnect until I toggle wifi on and off. Nothing I've tried so far has worked. Little worried its not as widespread of an issue as I thought it would be.

Since mine has worked flawlessly (stock rom) for very long periods of sleep with an active wi-fi connection, I would have to believe you have a defect in yours. Either that, or a problematic AP.

I guess I was hoping for a little more detail than that.
More powerful how, precisely? Does it boost the signal strength by pushing more power into the phone's signal? Enable different networking standards? Up-clock the circuitry?
One thing it certainly seems to do is absolutely pulverise the battery; I'd like to know what the trade-off is.

Best WiFi performance, silly
Seriously, I switched it on and off. No difference. ~47Mb/s down, ~15Mb/s up.
I've never got more than 15Mb/s up no matter what settings I use.
in my opinion it is just for signal strength...

Well, there is a similar feature for the Note II and what it does is allow you to hang onto poor wifi connections which will drain more battery so the option is disabled by default.. Maybe that's what it is on the HTC One too??

You probably have Sleep Mode turned on in the Power settings. If you use Power Saver, you might have ticked the Data connection box too.

I've checked them both. Unfortunately not.
And also wifi is on Always On.
That's why I'm trying to find anything else.
3G works fine. I'm not sure if I have the same problem in other wifi networks. One I tried today seemed to work fine.
But I'm checking now whatever option I have.

i tried a speed test and i have to say my wifi download speed did go up from 8.74Mbps to 18.51Mbps.

I have unlimited 3G plan so I don't care about data traffic and no mater what I do battery last 1 day, so I don't care about power saving.

Settings - Screen - Set screen timeout to 30 minutes or something, It's not smart to keep 3G - Wifi online, as it will wake your phone from deep sleep and It won't even last 1 day like that.
You gotta find a kernel with no deep sleep support.Also why do you want your 3G to be on while screen is off? Thats nonsene.Most of the apps that use your 3G would keep your phone from locking the screen, so your phone wouldn't enter deepsleep and they could resume downloading.If you wanna save battery by locking the screen, just turn the brightness down.
Try to delete bloatwares, that increased my battery life from 1 day to 2 days, with moderate usage.Try using some different kernels also.
Whats your purpose locking the screen while 3G is on? WiFi hotspot or something?

by default, your 3g should stay on when you turn the screen off/lock it, if they're enabled. you only need to do some things if you DONT want it on when your screen is off.

Background services? Push notifications? It makes much sense (are you sure what you're talking about?). But on the other hand: if there are apps requiring network for such purposes, they usually take care themselves for this requesting corresponding wakelocks from time to time (background services). Just push notifications work differently, but here the core system should take care.

That's plain nonsense. Though they could do so (e.g. requesting a full wakelock), they usually don't. Want an example? Ever heard the chime for a new mail having arrived, as you set your mail client to poll at certain intervals? I've never seen the screen turning on for new mail polls. But admitted, I'm not constantly staring at the screen

You wouldn't receive emails 24/7, turning 3G on once an hour or two is enough to check notifications.You wouldn't notice any notifications until you turn on the screen anyway.

Nope, I just didn't get what he means.He should try to be more specific.His question is short and simple, no one can do anything without knowing what he is trying to do.Theres multiple solutions to a problem mostly and he is just focused on one of them.Keeping screen on 24/7 is not a solution.He should try to use third party apps, some should have options to notify him in some way, It's just nonsense to keep screen on 24/7.

Wrong again. I hear a chime (new mail notification sound), and then I maybe turn on the screen to look what it was.

(emphasis mine). He didn't ask for the screen being on, but for the connection. While for 3G, to my knowledge that's the case anyway (as @Flying_Bear already pointed out), this is different for WiFi depending on the settings (WiFi standby policy).
@denis1304: In WiFi settings, you can configure this in the advanced menu.

Let me explain on example what's that I want from my phone if it's possible.
I use app MightyText or MySMS and while on WiFi it works instantly but if on 3G and phone screen is off for some time, sending SMS start to lag and you need to wait for 10 or 15 minutes for SMS to go through.
Or when I want to install app from my PC over play website its takes also 10 to 15 minutes to start installing app.
While on wifi it takes much less time or start instantly.
Hopefully I explained what I want so you can help me or I expect too much.

While this won't help much: In both cases you mentioned, you are actively performing a task. So you could simply switch on the screen to speed up the action. I've no idea how to do that in a different way automatically, at the moment at least.

In both cases, turning on the screen and 3G once an hour is enough.
Turning the brightness down could save him from locking the screen, that was my point.

It is what he exactly asked.He wants his phone to keep 3G - Wifi online while screen is locked.So keeping the screen on wouldn't be a solution, and a third party app could help.

You should try JuiceDefender, I know it's actually a battery saver, but I remember it had some options to sync stuff even while screen is locked.You can set how often it syncs, or turns on the Wifi or 3G to perform such tasks.
