Any fix for no power button menu?
I'm having the same issue as nate360. My power button works for locking/waking up the screen, but doesn't do anything on a long press. No menu, no reset, nothing. I have to do a battery pull to turn off the phone!
3-button recovery works, but get this--the power button does not work in samsung recovery but does work in CWM recovery.
Did reflashing help? I've gotten my kernel and modem just how I want them, so I was hoping for a different fix.

Tried to take pictures with the power button. They work, but doesn't fix the power button. I love the ROM, and did not have this issue on 5.6 before upgrading. Thanks for any help
Update! In my frustration, i just took like 50 photos and videos using various combinations of power button and on screen capture button, and my power button menu is back! Hope it works for others. Thanks Mike!
It's fixed go and update to 5.8 silly bugs
I tried Serendipity 5.7 to 5.8 which was supposed to be a fix for the extended menu and i have not been able to install it successfully.
Getting "assert failed getprop ro.build.display.id" etc error.
Can someone help what I am doing wrong....

You're not on 5.7.
Thanks Mike, does it mean I messed up?

Whatever it says in About Phone, you have to start from that version and work your way up.

So if you've installed recovery, you probably have realized that timing is everything on going into recovery. It can be a down right pain in the butt to get that key combo working. To make matters worse, you go to plug it into USB so you can run ADB in recovery, and the phone starts booting itself! Then comes the battery pulling so you can ensure that it will actually take your key holding. Any of you that use recovery a lot know what I'm talking about.
I discovered a solution for this called "Quick Boot." You can get it here: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.siriusapplications.quickboot&feature=search_result (it's free for regular version)
If you're already booted and want to go into recovery, fire up this puppy, select "recovery," and before you know it, you're there.
This has the added benefit of not asking you to hit the confirm wipe in order to get into recovery!
I know it's a minor thing to address a minor pet peeve, but I'm just throwing it out there as I found it really convenient.
Should be very handy till we get roms that have this tied into the power button
does this change the shutdown menu to like that in CM7? I ran CM7 on my Eris before I got my Revo and I loved the shutdown menu!

Its somewhat like CM7's menu. When you click it a menu opens with similar options as CM7 ie.. reboot, recovery, power off. Hope that helps?
This is a great find Major...
Perfect, thanks.

I'm running Revolt 1.3 and it has the recovery option in the power button. Still an awesome ap for those running stock rooted without the power button option.
It would seem that the closer I get to buying my SGS III, the more my cappy starts to fall apart.
Recently the power button has been on the fritz, pressing itself and opening up the power menu at random intervals as well as turning my screen on and off whenever it damn well feels like it. It's infuriating to say the least.
Is there any way to completely disable the power button so I can just use workarounds until I get my SGS III? All of the searching I've done thus far has turned up nada.
Also, yes I have taken my phone out and cleaned it with compressed air and that didn't do a damn thing. I'm pretty sure I've knocked the connection loose from all of the abuse I've given it over the last year or so.

Go to /system/usr/keylayouts/aries- keypad.kl
And erase the line with key 116 power in it, and from there you can rename any key the new power button and then reboot. I just had to do this to my phone as well I feel your pain!

Awesome. Can I still use the key combo to get into recovery and boot my phone with the power button after I make the change?
And if I rename the search key to power button do I leave it as virtual or change it to wake?
Should it be:
Key 217 Power Virtual
Or
Key 217 Power Wake
I just want to get the syntax right the first time around. Again, you're awesome and thanks a ton!
Edit:
Got the power button remapped to the search key. Problem with that though, is that I forgot the capacitive keys don't register touch when the screen is off lol. Derp.
Edit2:
Went ahead and mapped it to a volume key. Thanks again for saving my sanity!

No problem. I don't know what rom you run but if you have the volume awake feature you can use the volumes to wake the phone and then use the search "power" button to lock and reboot and stuff.
Also this remap only applies once android has booted up so it has no affect on when in recovery or download or off anything like that.

Yeah im on AOKP, so I was going to use it like you described until I read somewhere that it changed the key used to boot up and get into recovery. I didn't want to take the chance of having to figure out how to boot my phone without a power button.

You could go to setting->display->volume key wakes up phone option. If youre worried about not being able to get into recovery, download rom manager if you dont already have it. There is an option to do several things like booting into recovery, backup roms, partition SD card, fix permissions, etc. What about that?

Thanks for the reply. I actually had that option enabled already when I was using the search key as a power button. Turns out though, that the volume keys dont wake the phone if you're playing music (which is like half of the time I have my phone on me outside of work lol). In the end, im just using the volume down key as a power button and its working well for me so far. If I need to get into recovery I can still use the power menu. As for not being able to power up the phone when it was bound to the search key, it's now turning on the moment the battery is inserted, so no worries there anymore ;P

Okay so my power button just randomly stopped working after some random time. it doesnt work ANYWHERE. to lock my screen, to unlcok my screen, in recovery mode i cant press anything cuase it doesnt WORK. i no its a hardware issue becuase of this. i did google this but found nothing. what can i do to fix it.
i tried a battery pull and putting it back and going to recovery to factory reset but as soon as i put my battery in my phone starts up. i can enter recovery but the power button doesnt work so i cant press anything.
my warranty is over by a long shot ( had it since it released) so cant return it.
any help would be appreciated. all i need is a way to turn my phone on and off nothing about the recovery and stuff. but if you do find someting for it that would be even more amazing.
and has this happened to anyone else, just wondering is all if this is common or rare.
thnx in advance.
it has happened to many captivates. search 'captivate power button' on xda.
What ROM are you running on your phone?
Answer to that question has a lot to do with your next steps for software workaround.
One approach; you could read up on ways to clean the power button and see if that works. Or send it off to mobiletechvideos.com and he will fix it for a reasonable fee.

i am running Aocp 5 android 4.2.1
hve been running it for a few weeks now and no problem till now
Okay, start by seeing if you can clean the power button, that may fix it for now. Again, search 'captivate power button' to find some threads about ways to clean it.
With the ROM you are running, I believe you have a version of CWM that allows to use the Cappy's dedicated menu keys, menu, home, back and search, to navigate and select recovery items.
Assuming your power key is stuck on, remove the battery, hold the up and down volume buttons and reinsert the battery to get into recovery. This will allow you to test keys, wipe, and any other function in CWM.
With the phone on and fully booted into JB, go find volume rocker wake in the system setting options and make sure it is active. Hitting the up/down key will wake the screen when it sleeps. Add the sleep/lock toggle to your notification bar menu and you have a way to instantly lock the screen without the power key.
If you still have a bad power button stuck in on position, then you will need to take out the battery to turn it off.
Hope this helps.

This is happening because your power button is stuck in the on position. Did you try to clean it as suggested earlier.
BWolf56, I'm not aware of an app or ROM that completely prevents power up on insertion of battery when the power button is stuck on. If there is such an app, I'd like to hear about it. I think maybe the power switch goes to the broadcom power management chip, so I don't understand how the app could work unless the phone never came on at all. SOD symptoms would be the result.

I was suggesting a app to turn off the phone/lock screen. There are widgets for that in the market.

I had a very similar problem with my Epic 4G Touch (Sprint S2) - my phone would randomly reboot, and it kept getting worse and worse. Thought it was the ROM, the overclock, etc. I flashed back to (almost) stock, went back to original clock speeds. Eventually, I noticed that even brushing past the power button would wake the screen, and about 10 seconds later the phone would reboot.
Long story short, I bought a replacement power switch, soldered it in place, and have had zero problems since!
Several eBay sellers offer the switch you'll need.
(They don't include the skills needed to solder it in place. It's a tiny switch - about 4mm x 2mm x 1.5mm, and you'll need a good quality fine-tipped soldering iron and a steady hand. Do you have a friend who's good at soldering?)

Hey I need some help.
I have a stock exhibit II 4g and I am trying to root it but I've tried a thousand times and it will not go into recovery mode. I've tried many timing variations one the simple power and volume up. Some site say to do power, volume up, and home. and the there volume down and power which takes it into Odin Mode which just sits there "downloading" forever.
I've even watched youtube videos and time it exactly like they do but my phone just does not do the same thing that theirs does. Is there some trick to it that I'm not getting?

Try this. Plug it into USB cable of computer, pull out battery, hold volume up and power and reinsert battery. You should come to a screen with a triangle, just hit the menu key and you will be in recovery.

I've managed to get into recovery by holding both up and down, holding power till the screen turns on, releasing power, then waiting till I see the recovery menu to release up and down.

Still don't work. I tried that yesterday too. And I found apps that could let you do it by searching around but I rather not rely on an app. Also tried back button plus power, back plus home. Nothing is working.
I'm on the 10/31 version of the CM 10.2 port (4.3.1) and that's the key combination that works for me. What rom did you come from previously? Power + Home was for sense based roms I believe. Perhaps you had a bad flash and things are mixed up.
I came from stock before. And it was what ever the default combo was.

It's really odd that power+vol down doesn't work, I remember being on CM 10.2 and that worked for me (that's still how you do it in CM 11). It does require that you press both buttons simultaneously, and you hold them until the phone says it took a screenshot (about 1 second). If the volume thing shows up, or the phone sleeps, or the power menu shows up, you didn't hit them at the same time.

Another way to be able to take screenshots in CM10.2 (and 11) is to get into your settings and access the Buttons sub-menu. Then go to Power menu and enable Screenshot. Now when you hold down the power button (like when you're turning off your phone for example), you'll see a section dedicated to Screenshots.
Hope this helps for future reference!
