Here is what I have done.
I rooted using z4root found here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833953
Downloaded Superuser and Spare Parts from the market along with titanium backup to test that I have root.
Bought Verizon Tab Recovery Bootstrap from the market and ran it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=870690
Rebooted in to recovery from the app and it went to work.
Now I am stuck at the Samsung screen. . . . . .
So where do I go from here to fix this?
Hemdall to restore stock VZW system your tab will boot back up and still retain root. Wipe Data and Cache Format SD. Sign back into Google account unchecked restore data for appear. Redownload bootstrap. Run it. It will change system to ext4 then run Ron manager. Flash recovery. Done!

Check my thread on the general forum, I posted a link to the stock rom. Try flashing it with heimdall, you may need to repartiton as well since stock is rfs not ext4.

Ok, so I'm thinking about finally flashing a rom because I am tired of waiting on the official update, probably using cog. However there are some things that I want to make sure I understand before I start flashing.
(1) I want to be able to go back to this official jh7 in car something arises. If I am not mistaken, I can do that through clockwork recovery by using "flash clockwork mod". If I'm correct this will create an update.zip file that can be reinstalled by going to phone recovery and reinstalling packages. If so, what all does this back up? Will it be like a stock jh7 with only default apps and settings? Do I need to un root and un-lag fix from what I did through ryanza oclf?
(2) do I need to un root and un lag fix oclf to install a rom.
(3) I'm pretty sure that it will not have my apps/settings from now, to get these I must backup using titanium, and reinstall from titanium on new rom correct?

Great place to start is with Cognition Roms. Have run several and currently on 2.3b6. It's fast and the Froyo touches make it worth NOT waiting for an official update.
1. Once you are rooted, install Rom manager, and flash Clockwork Recovery. Reboot into Recovery from Rom manager. There are several options in recovery but toggle to backup and restore and then select backup. Doing this will create a nandroid backup of your phone as it exists now. This file will be stored on your phone's external sd and from there I always copy or move mine to my removable sd card. If you ever want to restore reboot into clockwork recovery, toggle to backup and restore, then restore and find the file (would rename it if i were you) then restore.
Another great tool is the Odin 1 click restore. If you get your phone jacked and can't get into recovery this will take you back to stock with no root. Cog recommends flashing back to stock with Odin and then rooting again before flashing another rom so it would be good to learn this method anyway.
2. Can't flash a new rom without being rooted. I would uninstall the lag fix also. There is a lagfix built into the current Cog rom called Voodoo.
3. Backup up apps with Tit backup but when you restore, restore the app only and not the data. I backup my text messages and call log with sms backup which works pretty well and restores easily.
From your current state. Download the latest cog rom 2.3b6 from your phone's browser and rom manager will pick up the download. Go to rom manager when it's downloaded, click download rom, find the zip file, wipe date, wipe cache and watch the magic.
The cognition wiki explains the steps as well.
The water's warm so jump on in.

Thanks for your help, I'm anxious now. If I want to restore a game amr its save games don't I have to restore data too? And on the wipe data and write cache, by that you mean from clockwork recovery? Thanx again for your help

I've read it many times in the Cognition forum that restoring data with apps can give you problems. I have done it in the past with no difficulties on some apps and had issues with others. You can try and see what happens. My kids always get upset when I flash a new rom because they have to start Angry Birds from the beginning again. I'm not an expert by any means but you might want to search the cognition thread and get some second opinions.
You can flash a new rom from rom manager and since you are at stock with root is probably the easiest. Go to rom manager, install rom from sd card, you will then be taken to your sd file directory, go to download, then the cog file you want to flash. You will get a prompt to backup existing rom which you can do if you haven't already done your nandroid backup but if you have a backup already then you can leave unchecked. You will also get a prompt to wipe date and cache which you want to do. Rom manager will take it from there. Phone will go into recovery and you will see on the screen what is happening as the file is downloaded and everything currently on the phone is wiped and will reboot.
Note on Tit backup - I would copy your backup file to your external sd. My files, long press tibu, copy, go to external sd, paste. Little extra protection and only restore apps and not system stuff. Apps are always a certain color in tibu.
Ok, so when I try a remove oclf it gives me an error dating I have 312 mb free on rfs, but 662 mb used on ext2, must free up some space.
Do I delete some stuff on /data/data to free up some space?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Not sure on that one. I had oclf installed once and was able to uninstall pretty easy in Ryan's program. It might not matter if you are wiping data but DG has posted several times about disabling lagfixes. You can always give it a shot and then restore your backup if you have issues.

No prob! Welcome to the club
I rooted and got stupid with removing certain apps while safe mode was disabled. I tried restoring the restore posted in development somewhere and an MD5 mismatch error kept coming up... I tried downloading again after clearing the browser cache and that didn't work. Right now I'm just running the pre rooted stock ROM in safe mode.... but not sure if that's a good thing or not.
If you're trying to flash something over your non-safe system you won't be able to do it through safestrap. Clockworkmod recovery is the first thing that pops into my mind. If you're still able to use your non-safe system, switch back to that, completely remove safestrap, and use CWM recovery to flash a stock ROM. Just be sure the ROM isn't specifically designed for safestrap's /preinstall system.

I've been trying to load the Cyanogen 7.1 update for my Galaxy S, and have been following the instructions on the Cyanongen Forum.
I firstly installed the Clockwork mod from the instructions on the sticky at the top of the cyanogen galaxy s forum
I then did a Nandroid backup, formatted the system, data & cache partitions then rebooted. The phone didn't reboot, so I followed some other instructions, and also wiped the Dalvik cache. The phone still didn't reboot.
Any ideas how I can now load up my original ROM? Clockworkmod is installed which is reassuring, but it wont seem to load anything up. Do I need to wipe any cache etc, before restoring up my original ROM?
Update;
I've tried to restore everything (except SD) from the recovery mode, but it's still not booting up. Help!

hm you formatted /system after installing rom, if i understood correctly?? That means there isn't any rom in the phone to boot up
just boot to recovery and flash CM7 again..this time without formatting anything..or if you want to go back to Samsung sick rom, you'll have to use Odin/Heimdall because it uses totally different flash layout (you'll have to use re-partition).

Hello all. I'm having trouble with a galaxy ace, in that it seems very fussy about which ROMs it will run. Bought it about 6mo ago from Optus Australia on prepaid and unlocked it to use on another network. I tried at the time to upload a custom ROM, but failed and ended up having to re-load it with Odin 4.38 and the only images I could then find, which are these:
APBOOT_S5830XXKPH_CL260130_REV03_user_low_true.tar.md5
CODE_S5830XXKPH_CL260130_REV03_user_low_true.tar.md5
CSC_S5830XXKPH_CL260130_REV03_user_low_true.tar.md5
MODEM_S5830XXKPH_CL260130_REV03.tar.md5
Just recently the device has been unstable so I looked around and found the stable CM 7.2 ROM recently released (cm-7.2.0-cooper.zip) so I grabbed that, installed CWM 5.0.2.6, ran a backup and tried to install it. Device only got as far as the black boot screen with the word Android in uppercase doublespaced and hung.
Booted back into CWM and tried to restore, got the MD5 checksum error. Fixed the nandroid.md5 and tried again, and the device then hung at the initial boot screen for the stock rom (says Samsing Galaxy Ace GT-S5830 or similar).
Back to Odin. Found a recent version (4.42) and a one package ROM, S5830XWKT7_S5830OPPKS6_S5830XWKT3_HOME.tar.md5 and loaded this to the handset. This one gives me an Optus spashscreen followed by the sort of pulsing SAMSUNG text in an infinite loop.
Eventually tried the flasher and ROM I used six months ago (at the top of the thread) and was able to get the phone to boot successfully. Reinstalled the rooting package, reinstalled CWM5 and managed to restore just data out of the advanced backup/restore menu.
So I'm back to where I started, only six hours worse off Has anyone got any idea why this isn't working for me, or any good suggestions of how to proceed?
Cheers,
Alex
Are you sure you are using the GT-S5830 and not the Gt-S5830i ?
This was sent from a Galaxy Ace.
damn, that would be a stupid mistake
No, I'm not absolutely positive. The sticker under the battery says GT-S5830, but from a look at google images the two handsets appear identical? How can I establish for sure?

Use Odin 4.38, download any one package firmware from sammobile with your backup's android version (ie 2.3.4, 2.3.5 or whatever).
Flash it, wipe everything after Flash (from stock recovery), then root, install cwm and restore your backup.
Boot loops are mostly caused when you don't wipe after flashing. Connection issues can be fixed by flashing your region's modem.
Also, restore backups using the appropiate cwm version (backups of cwm5 restore with cwm5)
Cheers. Dunno if I'm being a bit simple here, but I'm only finding 10 most recent FWs here, all of which are 2.3.6 ?
I didn't do as much wiping as you suggest last time though, so i'll give it another whirl and see if I do any better.
I was being simple. Hadn't selected a region.
trying now.
Flash DXKPB 2.3.4 Asian firmware first. If you flash that, it will format all of your partition back to rfs
And after that you can just flash newer firmware like XWKT7 2.3.6 and wipe data. Voila!

i had stock 2.3.6 and i decided to download and flash Jellaxy
it works, but sometimes its slow, lagging and apps crashing
i have nandroids of both (stock and jellaxy)
i tried restoring stock 2.3.6
error restoring /system
advanced restore just system didnt work, too
i flashed 2.3.5 italian through odin (download mode)
odin didnt finish because of bootloop
i dont remember exactly, but i did wipe, factory reset, cache and/or other
it booted, finally (in italian)
then i formatted /data and recovered old data
bootloop
i tried wiping all at once: dalvik, cache, data, factory reset
bootloop
now i cant go to download / recovery by holding vol down/up and home and power, it goes to ramdump
recovery is now home + power
i can restore jellaxy, but not stock
what to do? i'm stuck on jellaxy

To restore a stock rom your file systen to rfs !!!
And all custum rom are ext4!!
Meaning ... Use stock recovery to wipe data causing the system to become rfs again then install cwm and ONLY !!! Restore ! Otherwise if u format it will convert to ext4 again !
U can also use chainfire ext4 app to change file system in jellaxy and then restore.
Take care

I have a N7000 that got stuck at Samsung logo without any sort of modification of firmware or similar. I suspect it had 4.1.2 but I can't be 100% sure. First I tried to wipe cache from recovery menu then I tried to flash it with 4.1.2 using Odin without any success. After reboot it got stuck on starting apps just after it had optimized all the apps for 4.1.2. After another boot it's still stuck at Samsung logo. The thing is that I have a lot of pictures of my children that I want to save if possible. What do you recommend, trying an old GB ROM? As saw a special ROM for another phone that wiped everything but data. Is there something similar to N7000?
You may need to format data to get the phone to boot up again. Download philz kernel for JB and flash it from recovery. Then boot onto recovery again and you should see cwm. Then choose wipe data. This will delete all user apps and it's data but will not delete pictures and videos on your internal storage. Then reboot. If phone still doesn't boot then you may need to flash is one more time.

I flashed a GB rom with Odin but got nothing I could use. Didn't get past the setup. Then I flashed 4.1.2 again and could actually get past the samsung logo. It's extremly instable though, crashing all the time. Could copy a single file in the root folder with usb but as soon as I try open another folder it crashes. Is there something I could do to make it more stable? Could philz help? Perhaps the filsystem is messed up....
You need to do a factory reset.
Sent from my GT-I9500 using xda premium
I gradually shut down services and features and uninstalled apps (especially service based ones) until it was stable enough for me to copy files through usb. Success
Now I just need to back contacts etc before I can do a proper wipe and reinstall 4.1.2. Is there a especially good app for it? And if that fails, are the contact info/address book accessable through the file system?
Usually synced with Google but you could make a nandorid back from recovery and then one you have the new ROM installed, use titanium backup to extract app data of contacts and contacts storage using "extract from nandroid backup" functionality.
