[Q] Maps can't reinstall? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all!
I just got my S Galaxy S from the phone dealer who rooted my phone to the kernel 2.6.32.9 root SEI-28 #1.
I was trying to update the maps to the new v5.1.0 on the market now and it kept saying 'package was not signed correctly' since it couldn't install (but COULD download it). After some weak research I was under the impression i should use Root Manager to remove the Maps.apk file and com.google.android.apps.map.apk. Still i could not install the new maps.
(side note: i tried to backup with the root manager and apparently it did not work without me realising...bummer)
Later i find out i had the Brut Map v4.4 and tried installing that and it still does not work. Now i have no maps and cannot install either. A pretty unclean uninstall, i know, but can anyone help me resolve this problem??? Do i still need to remove some other files to uninstall it completely? i don't know much about using adb stuff though i'm happy to try anything at this point.
Thanks everyone!!

After rom upgrade my Android has phantom apps

My MT3g thinks I have a couple dozen apps already installed that aren't already installed. When I go to the market to install one, it says "INSTALLED" if I click on it, I see the OPEN and UNINSTALL buttons grayed out. How can I get my android to stop being obstinate and let me either install or use the apps it thinks are installed?
Did you wipe before you flashed your rom?
I thought so! but apparently I didn't...
I thought Cyanogen had a script to fix this issue though but I can't find it. FixPermissions.sh or something.
Try and format your partition ext/2. I had to do that when switching roms to because apps weren't launching.
Anyone figure this out I'm having the same issue with my G1 with Cyan v4.1.9999????
Same issue after wipe/factory flash and rom upgrade

might be worth following eventually. I've tried using other file and package managers to try and remove the apps, but they aren't showing up anywhere but in the market as phantom apps with greyed out open/update and uninstall buttons.
If you can download the original installer from somewhere (google search), just install that, uninstall it, then install it from the market and that should fix the problem. That's what I did.

This method works... if you can find the apks. I thought backup for root users saved all apks. But apparently it doesn't for protected apps >.> and I can't find a few of them anywhere on the internet (or the download links don't work for me e.g. rapidshare)
So I'd be really grateful if anyone could upload these apks for me.
biz.mtoy.shot.apk (Shot: a game)
com.agilesoftresource.apk (AndroZip)
com.che.beta.wtd.client.apk (What the Doodle!)
com.handson.gh4.lite.apk (Guitar Hero 4 Lite)
com.herocraft.game.farmfrenzylite.apk (Farm Frenzy Lite)
com.media1908.lightningbug.apk (Lightning Bug)
com.moblyng.android.dungeonquest.apk (Dungeon Quest)

[Q] Min reqs for app install

I have recently purchased the GT-P1000 in Kuwait. It's unlocked but I don't have admin rights to it. Initially, there was no Android Market but I found the fix for that in another post.
My current dilemma now is I can't seem to get apps to install. The downloads will pause themselves and never install the application. I've had this happen to Angry Birds and Robo Defense.
As of now, I have no desire to flash this device. AFAIK, it's 3g voice/data straight out of the box and I don't want to risk losing those features.
Now, the question is, what's the bare minimum I need to do so I can install apps from Android Market and remove unwanted apps?
So I feel like an idiot now. For some reason, I can now get the apps to download and install: Angry Birds, Robo Defense, ES File Explorer, and Dropbox have installed successfully.
I still would like to remove some apps and install some that will need root access. Can someone confirm that if I root the phone that it won't affect the 3G data/voice capabilities?
ROOTING only gives you su (superuser admin) rights to your phone. It doesnt affect your phone or device functions (unless you mess around somewhere). Rooting gives you ability to access files or functions that vendor has it locked out from you. Sort of like jailbreaking the iphone.
Flashing roms is another thing. Some roms have no support to some functions But since you already own an unbranded non carrier GSM and Not CDMA tab. You shouldnt really worry.
all samsung tabs are different...so in lots oof countries they made some differnces in possibilties.
Try out by going to my weblog and after registering to download thje apks you find in the download section.
Best is to download this on another laptop..and copy the apk to the micro sd card in a folder with your name
then withe a file manager clck on the apk to see if they install
not working.....then you need to root your samsung to make it work

thanks for the info. I didn't think rooting would break anything but my paranoia got the best of me.
I rooted my phone yesterday and was able to install and run apps that need SU rights. I'm still havin trouble removing the apps that came with the Tab. Thoughts anyone?
FYI, I can uninstall apps that I've downloaded from the market.

Oho. stock apps cannot be uninstalled. Simplest way to uninstall stock apps is to use Titanium Backup Pro. Before you do that, be sure you backup the app in case you need it again later.

[Q] PLEASE HELP!.. Manually installed printershare.apk, now cant seem to remove!? :(

I have a rooted samsung fascinate, with stock rom/kernal..
Anywho I was playin around with installing some apps and I wanted to install the free version of Printershare, but instead of getting it from the market I used an APK file to install it from my sd card. Well the file appears to have been corrupted, so I attempted to uninstall it through root explorer, as well as remove all traces of the program. When I went to reinstall the program from the APP market, I now get the error "Installation Failed.. Update Incompatible." I searched around to figure out what that meant and in the process I noticed that the com.dynamixsoftware.printershare package was still listed in my manage apps section, but I am not able to uninstall it from there. I searched for it in root explorer but like I said I deleted all traces of printershare before so i didnt find it there. If anybody can help me with this issue it would be greatly appreciated!! THX!
PS. Sorry if this is in the wrong section I'm new to XDA
Try downloading Titanium Backup from the market. There is a free version and it should take care of your problem. If not, some others have recommended a program simply called Installer for Root.

[Q] New Android Market crashing, unable to install old one

Hi Everyone,
Looking for help for an issue, I installed the new android market and was messing around with Titanium Backup (forgot to backup the app, dumb me!) anyway I tried to uninstall the new market to go back to the old one but when I did this the market app is gone from the manage apps area. My phone is a N1, running 2.3.4 and rooted, this what I have tried:
- Install the old market manually from a downloaded vending.apk, not working crashes to .com.android.vending every time
- After this I went to look in the /system/app folder for vending.apk and the app is not there, neither I am unable to copy the app using Droid Explorer or Root explorer, it says it is coping the app but is not there
- Re-install gingerbread update again to see if it gets the app back, did not work, still not in system/app folder
Does anyone know why I am unable to copy the vending.apk to the system/app folder? the phone is rooted but still can-t
Thanks!
If you're having problems with root permissions, try using ROM Manager to fix permissions. Another possibility could be busybox, so I recommend installing the version with Titanium backup (under the Problems? section of the menu).
Updating the market can be tricky, but I always find wiping data from Google Services Framework and (use app manager) Market (easier to use Titanium), and rebooting helps. Make sure you reboot before trying to use the Market...
I didn-t know about the Fix Permissions feature of ROM manager, I tried it and it work, I can now place the file on the system/app folder.
Thanks a lot!

[Q] De-Bing after ZV8?

I know you guys are working on it, but I was just wondering if anyone has been able to replace the Search button with Google search after the ZV8 update. I've tried the renaming the apk files in /system/app, but that doesn't seem to work at a ll...
Also, after attempting the rename trick, I uninstalled Google Search. Now the market thinks I have it installed, but it's not on the phone... I can't get it back, either. I was thinking that perhaps if I had the .apk, it may work. Anyone know how I can get the Google search .apk since the market won't let me download it?
DeBing will require a custom ROM, which I'm sure MT is working on...

If the market thinks it's installed, there should be an uninstall icon in the market, can you click uninstall and then install it again?
Or go to the market on a computer and click install from there, it should send it to your phone.

Alas no
To remove Bing (and other Crap-ware installed by Verizon) you will need to have root access (The un-installer is unable to un-install items in the System directory)
Hope this helps

Sorry I wasn't very clear... Accessing the market from a computer shows that Google Search is installed. There are no traces of it on the phone either in the Play store app or in the applications list.

I have root on mine... I just don't know how to replace the Bing Search with Google Search. I'm a little worried uninstalling Bing will break the search altogether...

Just go to the Market and download Google Search. The only thing is the search softkey button and searching from the browser address bar will still be Bing. For me, when I hit the search softkey nothing happens at all right now because I deleted Bing from System/Apps, lol
I did that and unfortunately and tried renaming the google quick search to BingSearch.apk in the /system/app as suggested for V7 in a lot of online posts. When that didn't work, I uninstalled it from my phone, but now the online Play store thinks it's still installed and I get: "Error: Your order is processing, your item will be available in a few minutes" when I try to reinstall."
Interesting. I have a rooted V8. I used "SystemApp Remover" (from the market) to remove Bing and the Bing widget. When I hit the search button, Google Search comes up.
I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but prior to Verizon pushing out V8, I was running GingerVolt 1.3 and followed the process to get a rooted V8 (load the stock V7, root, prep, OTA update to V8, root maintained). Perhaps something in GV1.3 wasn't blown away by V7-V8. After all, it seems to have left all my data and account information intact.
Well, I completely wiped all the data, reinstalled V7 from the .tot, rooted, upgraded and rooted and was able to get Google Search installed... I'm trying to go from there. Thanks!
Yeah, must have been a holdover... Removing bing caused my search bar to force close the LG home.
