Does leaving plugged in harm battery?

I turn my phone on Airplane mode and unplug at night while I'm sleeping.
BUT! When at work and at home at other times, is it bad to leave it plugged in 100% of the time? (I.E. does it decrease total battery life over a few years to be constantly charging.)
Or is it better to unplug ASAP when it hits 100% and let it drop to 20-30% and recharge-unplug-recharge-unplug etc? (If so, how much of a difference would this make?)
And does it matter USB vs AC source? I know USB is half the amps, so this could have an effect too?

Honestly, the battery is going to deteriorate a bit either way over a year time span. It is probably best if you just replace the battery every year.

Doesn't matter. All you need to really be worried about is that you leave it on the charger long enough to get a true 100% charge, and you don't always put it on when at 80%, try and run it down from time to time to 10% type thing.
If you leave it on the charger 24/7 for a year, it will have no real effect on the battery that a year of use wouldn't do, and you might actually come out ahead since battery life times are based on charge cycles... when on charger, as you are asking about, there would be virtually no charge cycles.

Ooooh, interesting... Did not know that. I thought that leaving it charging was the worst case possible.

To add to what pjcforpres said, I would suggest topping off the battery a couple times a day rather than always letting it run down to 20-30% (deep cycling) the battery. Deep cycling is worse for Li-ion batteries. It causes more heat for longer periods of time when you do charge. I would only discharge completely once every few months to keep the battery calibrated.
My personal habit is to top off frequently. If I'm at home, I'll let it charge to a true 100%, like pjc said, then take it off the charger and leave it off till it hits 75-80% and top it off again.

i can add to this discussion what i've learned about lithium-ion batterys
having it plugged in, while it is being taxed heavily (playing games) and already at 100% is a bad idea, then i discharges and recharges all over the time.
When it isn't full and you plug it in to top it off it shouldn't really do any harm, as long as you disconnect it when it's at 100%.
Emptying it completely also lowers overall capacity, 10% is a good threshold when to charge it.
When leaving it off to store it for a while, store it with around 70-75% in the battery. Storing it fully charged also lets capacity down.

I respectfully disagree with creepinshadow's suggestions. I've read up on lithium ion batteries considerably in the last few years. 10% is not a good threshold to always charge your battery from... that's deep cycling and was great for nickel metal hydride, but isn't good for lithium ion. That said, there's no way for it not to get that low from time to time if you're away from your charger for extended periods and I'm sure it's not going to destroy your battery as fast as one might think.
As for storage, the I charge (or discharge) mine to 40-45% then pop it into the fridge for storage. Read that in a long article explaining how to treat li-ion batteries.
Like you said though, a full discharge for calibration is running it till it turns off then plugging it in while keeping it off until an hour or so after the light turns green.

I've heard many people say that leaving any device that has a battery plugged in won't harm it as long as you're consistant with the charge cycles. Like only plug in your phone when the battery life is >15% and charge it to 100% before unplugging it.
I get into trouble there, because (for instance) say I'm going to be going into the mall for a while and my battery is at 30% and it's going to take me 30 minutes to get the mall (I live in Northern Virginia, traffic is a *****, haha). I'll hook up my phone while I'm in the car just to have extra battery life while I'm away from a charger.

Look guys... the reality is that this discussion is really just academic. Take my recommendations, for example. It would be ideal if everyone could do what the study I read suggested, but it's not practicable to always top off the battery and not deep cycle the battery frequently. That being said, I'm sure the difference in battery life wouldn't be apparent for a very long time. I can't imagine phone and battery manufacturers haven't thought about this. So...while I've posted my "recommendations" based on that study... just enjoy your phones.

A new battery cost <$50 i'm sure... If you left your phone plugged in over night, every night for a year it probably won't hold a charge better than someone that unplugs in once it reaches 100%..

In the past 16 months i've had the Touch Pro, Palm Treo Pro, BB Bold & now the N1.. so i never have a phone long enough to even care lol.

I guess that's true. We can always replace the battery, unlike the Fruit people!
But I was just worried that the damage happened quickly. But I guess it's 9-12 months before seeing any real effects anyway.

Is there any difference in charging from USB vs AC adapter in terms of how it affects overall battery life?

Buy yourself a cheaper battery: using lower amp batteries with the Nexus S

I have always thought that the amperage of a battery made no difference to the voltage due to the factory adjusting the internal resistance of the battery. Amperage I understood was measured in current, however, which does have an effect on overall voltage.
Recall:
V = I * R
With electronics, it is my understanding that the mAh battery doesn't matter as long as the voltage is the same, although you'd get less longevity out of a 1650 mAh vs a 1440 mAh.
Thus, I believe this battery would work. Thoughts? The part number matches exactly what was in my Nexus S and the batteries look identical. If this is the case, save yourself some money buy not searching Nexus S battery and instead searching ab653850ca in eBay instead of paying $30-$40 for a new/replacement Nexus S battery when they are the same thing.

mAh is a unit of electric charge, not current (notice the 'h' making it milli-Ampere-hour). So, yes, a lower mAh battery will definitely work, but it will last less time.
Also (just trying to explain better) a battery is not a "powered resistor", so the relationship between its voltage and its current is not just ohm's law (the one you recall). More specifically, the 3.7 volts is due to the chemical reaction inside the battery and is more or less fixed (although it decreases as the battery discharges). The current flowing is basically a function of the load of the battery, so it changes according to what parts of the phone are working at that moment. The output resistance of the battery is a formal way of describing how close the battery is to an ideal voltage source and is not related to the amount of current it's actually providing.

That's strange, if it is the same model (AB653850CA), why is it only 1440mAh? But I'm sure it will work.

All I know is that this Samsung Moment battery I got off of Amazon for $6 is almost as good as my stock battery.

The 1440mAh batteries work perfect, I have 2 of them. While you are at it, buy a wall charger to charge them in so they will charge to 100%. Having 2 spares means you will always have a FULLY charged battery to pop in and never have to tether the phone to a charger. Plus you get 2 to 4 extra hours of use.

What do you mean by that ? That the 1440 mAh battery only gives you 2-4 hours ? I doubt it lasts so little time. I hope it doesn't.

No he means charging the batteries in an external charger gives them a more complete charge as I find the same thing. I've got 2 genuine batteries and a third on the way and the external charger charges them to 100% whereas the phone only charges them to around 95%. The batteries charged in the external charger last longer than those charged in the phone.

Hard to know when you're legitimately getting a battery with "more capacity" though, so I just assume I'm always buying another stock battery anyways.

Hey guys,
I went ahead and ordered one of these too. I noticed that the Watts/hour is 5.55 on the Nexus S battery but on the battery I ordered (but have yet to get in) it says 5.3. Is this going to make a difference outside of how long the battery lasts?
If you guys buy one of these 1440s report back with what you've found out.
And if this is a success, then please urge XDA to sticky this thread or put this on the main page. Paying $50 for a second/replacement Nexus S battery is outrageous, and if this saves my fellow XDA members $45, more people should know about this. :]

External Battery Pack

For those that want to be sure they can make long trips without running down their battery, try this battery pack. Packs with only about 10% of this capacity sell at this price. 30000mah for less than $25. Notice that that is 30000 and not just 3000.
I won't guarantee their stated capacity, but I'm still trying to run down the one I got last week. Once I succeed in getting it discharged to the point where the internal N7 battery takes over, I'll post the result.

It's from China, I doubt very much that the actual rating is even close to the 30000mAh stated.
Also I see from the label that they say 5v input and 5v out?? it's not possible to fully charge a 5v battery with a 5v charger, the input voltage needs to be higher.
Looking at the sellers negative/neutral feedback most of the complaints seem to be about cheap and shoddy items which doesn't bode well for what you'd get.

Ipads are made in China. So what? 5v in and out is done all the time via internal switching PS. If you buy one and test it, then your opinion of "shoddy items" might count. As it is, I am testing it and so far the results are quite impressive.

To give you some real world data to work with, I have a 10,000mAh battery pack which will charge the N7 from about 30% to full twice with a bit left over, it's an Anker Astro 3 and quite big which it needs to be to pack in 10 Amps. Once you've had a chance to test yours maybe you can post the results here.

That sounds about right for a 10A pack. I'm still testing mine but I only use it when I'm out. So far, active reading time only amounts to about 4 hours. The tablet has been on for several days but most of the time in sleep mode. So far the battery pack still only has the first of the four LEDs blinking. I'll be using it for several hours today and I'll see what that shows.
As I said, I use it primarily for reading when I'm out but during that time wifi, MagicJack and Groov IP are all running and I do some browsing.
edit: Update. So far the N7 has been on for about a week with about 16hrs of actual use. The battery pack LEDs indicate it still has half charge. I'm quite happy with it.

I personally use the TrendON LG G4 Battery kit and have been really happy with it. While the batteries last about ~75% as long as the OEM battery, it comes with 3 (depending on the bundle you choose) and a wall charger. My expectations are low, most likely won't actually live up to the rating etc. Either way I'll let you know after it's in my hands and I try it out for a day or two. Yeah I know what you mean, the ones I have seen look so cheap and ready to do more harm than good.
If some good company would just make one around that level, but bigger than 3800 and you need new case/adds bulk.
Fingers crossed one you get is all good.

You haven't paid much attention to LIPO packs since the beginning, have you? LIPO batteries are constantly getting smaller while packing more and more current capacity. A denser battery pack is possible just as a LIPO pack with the same size dimensions having less capacity than 3000mAh

Bit shocked Mugen have not done one, I see they tested a 3100mAh, but a extra 100? is it worth it, thought for sure they would have tried a 3200/3500mAh, but all there is out there is cheap no name stuff.

Well, my 3500mAh arrived. It appears to be very well built. In no way does it feel or look cheap. It is ever-so-slightly thicker than the OEM LG battery, and also slightly heavier 49.4 grams, compared to 46.3 grams for the LG.
The extra thickness and weight is to be expected for the slight (claimed) increase in capacity.
I popped it in and it fit perfectly, snug but not too snug. Just enough that I could hold my phone without the cover on, screen up, and the battery would not fall out. My stock black leather back fit right back on without a problem.
Powered on and the charge level was right around 80%. I charged it to full, then ran down to 5% or so. I repeated that a few times before evaluating it's performance.
Sadly I didn't do much to test the stock battery, but I can tell you I was never able to get more than 3 hrs of screen-on time. Same with 4 TrendOn batteries! The TrendOn batteries also occasionally caused problems where my phone would shut off when taking a picture with flash. Wouldn't turn back on until I switched batteries. Maybe it would've had I plugged in a charger, but I never tried. That would happen even if the battery was over 60-70%.
Also using the TrendOn, sometimes I would put a freshly charged one in and my battery level would be stuck at 80%, never going up or down. Usually that would "fix" itself after a few reboots.
After using this battery for a little under 2 wks I can say I'm very pleased. I regularly get over 4 hrs screen-on time now. Using auto-brightness, and doing random things like browsing Reddit, XDA, watching YouTube videos, streaming music with Pandora or Spotify, etc.
I've taken many pictures with and without flash and haven't had a single reboot. Also haven't had the 80% bug. Both of which plagued 3 out of 4 TrendOn batteries.
Charges just as fast as the LG battery. Just over an hour from ~10%-100% using a QuickCharge 2.0 charger, and stock or equivalent cable.
I guess only time will tell if this battery continues to perform as well as its been, or if it decides to incinerate my phone... Since I received it, I haven't taken it out. Haven't needed to as it easily gets me through the workday(sometimes the entire day) , even with moderate to heavy use. Now that I have a QuickCharge 2.0 charger at home, and in my car, I don't even carry a spare battery. 15-30 mins on one of them and I'm good for several more hours.
I'm not sure who makes the battery. I don't think any name is printed, only "Made In China." I bought it using the BangGood app. I'll update if I experience ANY problems.

See lots of 4000+ batteries and standard 3000, but are there any good 3500 or 3800? (want to keep normal back, no added bulk)
Ones I have seen look cheap and nasty (no brand) and I have a feeling they will add nothing extra.
Anyone got a 3500/3800mAh, did you get noticeable difference, worth it?

I got a 4500mah battery on the way to my house. Its a slim one so no new back is neede. Im not going to say where i got it or anything about it until i test it and everything. I dont want anyone odering it and somehow the battery makes the phone catch fire lol.

Ps. Found that on ebay. 4500mah battery that fits without adding back cover (slim). I checked opinions aaand:

The extra thickness and weight is to be expected for the slight (claimed) increase in capacity.
I popped it in and it fit perfectly, snug but not too snug. Just enough that I could hold my phone without the cover on, screen up, and the battery would not fall out. My stock black leather back fit right back on without a problem.
Powered on and the charge level was right around 80%. I charged it to full, then ran down to 5% or so. I repeated that a few times before evaluating it's performance.
Sadly I didn't do much to test the stock battery, but I can tell you I was never able to get more than 3 hrs of screen-on time. Same with 4 TrendOn batteries! The TrendOn batteries also occasionally caused problems where my phone would shut off when taking a picture with flash. Wouldn't turn back on until I switched batteries. Maybe it would've had I plugged in a charger, but I never tried. That would happen even if the battery was over 60-70%.
Also using the TrendOn, sometimes I would put a freshly charged one in and my battery level would be stuck at 80%, never going up or down. Usually that would "fix" itself after a few reboots.
After using this battery for a little under 2 wks I can say I'm very pleased. I regularly get over 4 hrs screen-on time now. Using auto-brightness, and doing random things like browsing Reddit, XDA, watching YouTube videos, streaming music with Pandora or Spotify, etc.
I've taken many pictures with and without flash and haven't had a single reboot. Also haven't had the 80% bug. Both of which plagued 3 out of 4 TrendOn batteries.
Charges just as fast as the LG battery. Just over an hour from ~10%-100% using a QuickCharge 2.0 charger, and stock or equivalent cable.
I guess only time will tell if this battery continues to perform as well as its been, or if it decides to incinerate my phone... Since I received it, I haven't taken it out. Haven't needed to as it easily gets me through the workday(sometimes the entire day) , even with moderate to heavy use. Now that I have a QuickCharge 2.0 charger at home, and in my car, I don't even carry a spare battery. 15-30 mins on one of them and I'm good for several more hours.
I'm not sure who makes the battery. I don't think any name is printed, only "Made In China." I bought it using the BangGood app. I'll update if I experience ANY problems.

The 3500mah is the only one that would fit. any higher then a Custom case would be needed. I have one on mine and it's not that thick. I actually bought another case to fit on top of the one that came with my 7700mah battery. just look at my post and see the difference

Saw someone posted the same link a few posts up too. Figured I'd reply to let you all know that it's still working great. Actually had to swap to the original for a little when I was running out and didn't have time to charge. I honestly couldn't wait to get this battery back in. Still getting over 4 hrs screen on time, auto brightness, GPS and WiFi always on, NFC always on, Bluetooth on a good amount of the time and connected. I placed an order for a second one.

It just camein today. Doesn't feel as if it is cheap. Slightly heavier than stock battery. I haav to go through some charging cycles to let the battery settle. Will report back with anything new.

Been using the battery since my last post and well i like it. With stock battety i get no more than 2 hours sot and the new one i can get up to 3.5hrs. An im a heavy user. Using an anker quick charger it takes about the same amount of time to charge both batteries. Although the new battery does look really cheap it doesn't behave like a cheap battery. No over heatings and no shorting out when using too much. I provided some pictures of the battery just in case you want to know what it looks like.
P.S. I do go back and fourth between both batteries when they die out. For the first week of having it i soley charged both batteries inside the phone with the quick charger. Now i have an actual little battery charger which saves me a lot of time between charges.

the OP asked for a slightly higher capacity battery that fit flush with the OEM battery door, that gave better performance without adding any extra bulk and limiting case options. Of course a 7700mAh is going to last longer than a 3000-3800mAh. But that wasn't his question. They're EXTREMELY limited on case options, and take up a LOT more space in your pocket. It's something I wouldn't go for, but a 3800mAh battery that allows the use of all the OEM backs and cases while giving over 25% more juice sounds quite appealing to me

Where to get replacement batteries

Oneplus 3 is an awesome phone no doubt (if you don't damage it). However with the dash charging, there's a high chance we might need replacement batteries for the phone after a year or two.
Does anyone know where we would be able to obtain dash capable batteries for replacement? It would be a great disappointment if we are not able to replace it.
*it is a concern because at least in Singapore, there is 0 support despite purchasing a local set. You will be given an email to make an appointment to bring your set down to a location, but NO ONE will respond to your email. Oneplus Singapore Facebook as well as official reseller do not provide any support either.

Why would Dash Charge wreck the battery? Afterall if anything the phone heats up less than other phones, because the charging is handled by the adapter, not the phone.

You have a point there. However, batteries will eventually degrade, so it would be great to be able to do a replacement when the time comes

Most damage to a battery is done at night when you charge a phone when you've gone to sleep, as the charger will put it to 100% and keep it there throughout the night, which puts more strain on the battery. (just look into Sony Qnovo battery charging tech in their new phones).
The dash charger has been proven to change people's charging habits. For example I wake up at 7.30am to go to work at 9am, as soon as I wake up I put my phone on charge. Thus meaning it stays at 100% for less time, and so degrades slower.

Awesome! However, the battery capacity seems to be much lower than 3000mah

Stay away from buying non oem batteries. You don't want your phone to be the next Note 7 lol.

Again you wont need a new battery. It degrade really slow. The problem with fastcharging is heat. Batteries dont like heat. Also charging overnight is bull**** since it stops charging when its 100%. Again it doesnt matter what you do.. If u drain it to 0% its not fully empty so really doesnt matter!

Personally I change battery ever 1.5 to 2 years. Batteries have a lifespan and degrade over time. It degrades faster with heat. It's quite disappointing that no one is sellong replacements though.

Exactly. The controller stops the current flow at full charge. It will not top it up if you keep it plugged in such as in the overnight scenario.

The model number on eBay is BLP607.
You'll need BLP613 for OP3.

Maybe after a longer time there will be more replacements, if there aren't already.
If the OnePlus's battery it good I don't see a need for a replacement personality because I change phone after 2 years, when factory support ends and I'm tired of the phone.

I am pretty sure you can't wait to buy a new one before the battery degrade to an unacceptable level.
Like my OnePlus 1, which still has a quite decent battery time, though it has already become my son's toy.
So, don't worry about this too much.

Majority of the users will replace their phones instead of a degraded battery within 2 years. Unless the battery is defective then yea that would be understandable. If you are one the minority who upgrades every 3+ years then kudos to yall for having the will power to resist the upgrade fever.

I am using my xperia ZL since 2013. i changed its battery a while ago. now i feel it is time to change my device. moving on to one plus 3 soon.

I think my OnePlus 3 battery is pretty broaken already. Last me for around 4 houers so i need to recharge it several times a day.
I cant find a original battery, so ill probably have to get a not OEM one

AccuBattery says my battery is 87% helathy and on 2611 mAh instead of 3000mAh, but feels like much less
