Skinomi Screen Protector

When I first bought this screen protector I was kind of worried that it was one that had a wet application. I havent had too much luck when I tried them years ago on my Motorola Razr. Now, I have owned dozens and dozens of different phones and have put on many screen protectors in my time and I must say this was the simplest and the least frustrating one I ever put on! I'm very OCD about air bubbles/ being straight and not peeling at the edges and if there are any I pull it up and replace it, or if I put it on I always never get it to be straight the first time I apply it and have to take it off and start over, which makes the screen protector less sticky and then also tends to dust getting in it and the edge you peeled it off from not sticking right ever again.. come on we all know we have had this stuff happen.. Actually when I buy a cheap screen protector I always by two because I know I will end up messing up the first one...
With the Skinomi It went on ONE time.. Since it's a wet application it was easy to adjust and straighten out without having to pull off the screen protector. I did apply a little extra solution for this reason so I could slide it around easier. So this is the first time I have EVER installed a screen protector and have it be prefect the first time! Not a SINGLE air bubble! I put it on and it was more over to the right side then the left, I was easily able to slide it over and center it correctly.. This screen protector looks 1000 times better than the one I had that came with my otter box commuter case for my Dell Streak. That one had tons of air bubbles(drove me nuts) and dust started to get under the corners
I LOVE THIS Screen protector so much I just ordered it for my Mytouch 4g phone!!! I would suggest getting one of these for sure!
edit: forgot to also mention it comes with free lifetime replacement and it's reusable so if it even does get dirty or start to come off it's easy to wash and reapply not like the ones that have the sticky stuff on the back

Are screen protectors really necessary with Gorilla Glass? I've never bothered with my OG Droid. I figured, if something is abrasive enough to scratch the Gorilla Glass, it'll be abrasive enough to cut through a screen protector.

I saw a YouTube video of a guy with a phone that has gorilla glass and it was all scratched up. It was actually a video of how he repaired the scratches. My motto: better safe than sorry.

a grain of sand that gets run across a screen would Fu** it up, maybe not as much with GG as non GG but it seems sand is also an enemy of GG. I had a non GG phone with a screen protector on it and I was at the beach and some sand scraped across my screen. It scratched the screen protector(pretty badly) but not the actual screen. So in this case I do think sand or something like that would be abrasive enough to scratch the screen(again maybe not as bad with GG but there still would be SOME scratches) but not abrasive enough to go though the screen protector to the screen

Since the DS7 is "Gorilla Glass" I did not put any screen protector, regrettably I found a scratch on the screen, I am SUPER careful with my gadget, I have it in my laptop case with nothing else next to it all the time. guys put screen protector, gorilla glass is BS.

I have the Dell Venue Pro (along with the Dell Streak 7). The day after I received the Dell Venue Pro, I dropped it on the hard wood floor. It did not break or anything. I was really surprised.
I bought the Skinomi Screen Protector for the Venue Pro, and I was also afraid I would have a difficult time (two Akitas) but it was very easy to put on.
I actually just put the one on for the Dell Streak 7 after reading this (I had already taken it out of the tube and flattened it). It looks pretty good - and from my understanding, they provide lifetime replacements.
I did have to call them because I ordered the wrong one (I ordered through Amazon and the title only said Dell Streak and it was for the 5). Skinomi answered the phone quickly and it was very easy to return.

In terms of resisting scratches, I'd say Skinomi isn't worthy to be called a "screen protector." There is a difference between a product that just makes your screen look "glossy", and a product that makes your screen look glossy in addition to protecting from scratch marks. Skinomi is in the former.
In situations of accidental slips, falls, drops or contact with a hard object, I would prefer Gadgetshieldz around my phone than Skinomi. Some mistakes have happened with the use of Skinomi around my phone, and that's when I realized that for all the glossy look that the product gave my screen, it wasn't even able to resist against scratches, which is the main reason why I got it in the first place.
And isn't that why people get these things in the first place? To protect against scratches, right? Not ONLY to have the phone look glossy for a minute and let it slide back into it's more worn out state.
And it does make sense: The better the screen protector is at resisting scratch marks, the better it is at keeping the device looking "glossy".

I quit using screen protectors on any of my devices that have glass screens. So far a year later, I've yet to scratch a screen.
The glossy ones are too glossy to see in any light.
The matte ones are too rough.

Do I need to buy a screen protector?

I will have this phone in two weeks. Do I need a clear screen protector? Or does it stay looking relatively good?

I also just got this phone and I think you should get one. Better safe than sorry. As this scree. Isn't gorilla glass so I won't really take my chances. In my old captivate and even my i9000 I had one.
Always a good practice and keeps resale value higher when screen is mint.

I vote no screen protector but don't put it in your trouser pocket with a bunch of keys and then sit down - the screen cracks

I don't use a screen protector for the protective qualities, but rather for the antifingerprint features, just makes the device look cleaner, repels glare as well.

You can answer this question yourself. Did you have a screen protector on your previous phone (with glass display)? If not, did you feel safe? If yes, don't buy one for the Nexus S. One screen doesn't scratch faster than another. Gorilla Glass maybe helps a little, but it's there to prevent cracking, not scratches.
Keep in mind that the Nexus S has a curved display. This actually DOES help a lot to prevent scratches, a lot more than Gorilla Glass.

This screen isn't like old ones. Most previous android phones didn't have an oleophobic coating which is far easier to scratch and wear off than the screen itself.
Just take a look at any iPhone 4 that's been used... there will be lots of little micro scratches in the coating but not the actual screen.

I have the full body Zagg one ... i like it..

anything that's going to scratch the screen is probably going to crack it. Although it's not gorilla glass it's pretty tough. i've dropped my phone numerous times face-first, and thanks to the curved display, not one scratch....
however the back is another story. I have numerous large scratches on it... so if you need any protection get a cover. don't worry so much about the screen. i hate those plastic coatings anyway....

I personally like a SP just because, hey, you just dropped some $ on a relatively pricey piece of equipment.
also it depends, do you have one of those nifty belt carrier thingys??? or do you rock it in the pocket, personally my phone stays in my pocket (I should really look into one of those nice padded carriers lol) Its all preference and just how hard on that phone youre gunna be man.

Thanks for all the feedback. I only carry my phone in my pocket. I hate those enclosed cases as aesthetics are important to me too and the cases always make it look clumps. I have never had a clear screen protector before and don't think I'll have one now. Thanks again!

Like most of the people told, I was against a screen proctector. But after using the NS for 1 week, I have noticed 3-4 round oily marks on the screen which I was not able to remove. Then I had to go and replace the handset and had the screen guard purchased right away.

I usually use a screen protector on any phone for:
1. Peace of mind
2. Fingers seem to glide on them easier than bare glass.

Really - oily stains that wouldn't come out? Has anyone else had that issue?
I have a HTC hero I've had a year, no idea what type of screen it is. Aside from finger prints on the screen, thats all that ever happened to it. No scratches or anything!

I did get one but took it off after a while.
Sine the screen has anti fingerprints and is A LOT smoother without a "protector" I choose to take the risk of getting it scratched.
I thought like this. If I have a protector and it gets scratched I still be walking around with a phone with scratches, unless I change me protector shield. But yeah if you get a good protector Shield, I suppose my argument is not valid. Anyways get 2 if you find anything decent !

Gorilla Glass screen so is a protector necessary?

Gorilla Glass is tough, but it's not the indestructible thing a lot of people think it is. I still have the factory protector in place.

Durable, yes, scratch proof, no. Even people that are gentle get scratches once in a while. If one grain of sand gets in your pocket with the phone you could end up with scratches. Do yourself a favor and get a good quality protector that you will never notice once its on. I use Steinheil protectors.

my only problem is with protectors I can't make the same slick swipe movements, that I used to make on the glass surface... the film just sticks to my fingers, and sliding on it is just not so fluent...

You have not tried any good protectors then. Stick with dry application ones. The wet applications are more rubber like. The Steinheil is called the Ultra Optics I think. Have one on my Transformer and you can't even tell its there and can slide across it just like the glass. I used Boxwave in the past, but they scratched too easily. There are a lot of good protectors out there, just do some reading and stay away from Zagg Invisible Shields no matter what you do.

I use a cloth pouch for my phone and haven't got any scratches since I got it (launch)
Like crzycrkr said, sand and minerals/stones in general are kryptonite for Gorilla Glass, whereas coins/keys/metal are no problem.
So, in my opinion, if you keep the phone in a pouch, you shouldn't face any serious problems.

Unless some sand finds it's way into the pouch, then you're utterly boned.

Hey dude. Do use a screen protector, my Nokia X6 has Gorilla glass too. but it has some scratches at the screen even when I put it inside a leather case.

i have no display protectors, imho they are unnecessary...
i believe that because when my o2x fell on the asphalt 3 months ago, faced down, i found lots of scratches on the plastic corners, but no scratches on the display. i could post some photos of the phone.
so, if the phone standed the asphalt, i guess it stands my pockets too

Asphalt is not particularly hard. The only people who don't use screen protectors are the ones who haven't scratched their devices yet. Then they curse amd wwonder why they didn't listen. With the quality of the protectors out there, there's not reason not to get one

I use it since April 2nd and do not use any screen protector or any other protector. I have my phone always with me and most of the time it is in my Jeans front pocket. I just came back from an outdoor trip to the polar circle and generally do lots of outdoor activities and my phones screen still is as new.
Sometimes I have sand in my pocket after I have played Beach Volleyball and still no scratches.
Sand will scratch Gorilla Glass, but it needs some force to do so. It wont scratch it if it only gently slides over it in a pocket.
Think about what you do with your phone before you do it and you won't need a protector. And don't worry, the O2X is really well crafted and not easy to damage.

Again, congratulations, but you are lucky and just one scratch away from kicking yourself for not putting one on.

Screen protector is just a thin film that'll not affect the screen's responsiveness, unless ofc you have that Sony bulky one. It is also cheap less than a buck. Why take the risk of a naked screen outdoor?

Because for one the scratches or damage in general could also happen on the backside and I wont put my pretty phone into an ugly case. Also I like the touch of glass.
And finally when I will sell this phone sometime in one or two years, the price won't differ between a totally unscratched pone and one with a few scratches.

Just out of curiosity, have you tried a good quality, dry application protector, like a Steinheil ultra clear? 99 out of 100 people wouldn't even know its on, and all 100 wouldn't have a problem with the feel.

No I haven't.
I've used screen Protectors on my former phones and they did statisfy me.
With this phone I still am happy that I don't need one.

First thing I did was taking off the protector when I bought my phone.
Still no scratch, always carrying in my pocket.
The thin protector will not protect the phone from getting scratched for objects which will damage gorilla glass.
Without protector it feels better also.
I don't leave the plastic around the seats in my car also.

I've put one of these on my Nexus S, but never on something as big as a tablet... hopefully it's just as easy.

There's so many other screen protectors that are better than zagg. Go with XO skins or BSE.

I've had a Screen protector from Zagg on my SGS2 since day 1 and seems perfect . Is the touch feeling different on those ?

why in the world would you want to put a screen protector on one of these? you can never get them on perfect and even when placed really good they still ruin the look and feel of the screen in my opinion. also dont worry about the screen anyway- they are practically indestructible/unscratchable with the new glass they use. search youtube for gorilla glass 2 and see for yourself.

A lot less orange peel, don't feel as rubbery, cheaper.

Because sand will scratch the glass regardless. It's like you don't understand how minerals work. silica has a hardness of 7. gorilla glass is ~6.4. Also, gorilla Glass 2 is thinner than gorilla glass 1, so it will shatter easier when dropped.

First: Not sure where your ~6.4 number is coming from. Everything i have seen reports it between 7 and 9. Corning uses a different type of test for abrasion so there is no official mohs hardness number.
Second: What the heck are you doing with your tablet that you are that worried about getting sand on it? I have had my phone(s) on construction sites and in our laboratory full of soil, sand, rock, concrete, etc every day and havent scratched one of them once since i got one that has this glass. If it can not scratch under the abuse i give it at work it can survive anything most other people can throw at it. If you get some sand or something on the screen, gently wipe it off and it will be fine. Big thing you need to worry about scratching it is diamonds and other gems from jewelry or maybe the corundrum off of sandpaper or emery boards.
Third: Gorilla glass 2 is thinner but "Corning announced Gorilla Glass 2, a glass 20 percent thinner than the original material offering the same scratch resistance, the same strength and enhanced touch-sensitivity." Either way, a plastic film on the screen isnt going to help protect the screen from breaking in a drop- at best it will hold all the broken pieces together. Its adding no impact resistance to the glass.
My point was only this- why ruin the look at feel of the beautiful screen on this thing when corning and others have spent enormous amounts of money developing glass for these so you don't have to bother with a screen protector. Save your money and buy a nice case to carry it in when you aren't using it and you'll be fine.

You do that, you don't really need a screen protector.

I've helped friends install InvisibleShield on various phones, and despite a pristine install, I really never could stand the feel of one of these instead of the bare glass. When I got my Galaxy Nexus a year ago, I checked the reviews again, looked at friends' phones with screen protectors (including Zagg) and came away with the same impression -- makes sense, since they're probably using the same 3M protective film (used on leading edge of helicopter rotors, car bras, etc.)
Despite the horror stories and photos of screens destroyed with "invisible sand", I decided to chance it with the GNex so I could really enjoy the screen as it was intended to be used. The only protection the phone has ever had on it is the 2-piece (silicone inner with plastic shell) Incipio case that Verizon was selling. The screen has been bare for a year.
The phone is generally with me from 6am till bedtime. I travel frequently for work -- the phone gets jammed in a pants pocket, jacket pocket, placed in a cup holder in my car, I've dropped it 3 times (happily the Incipio was sufficient protection). I've had it on camping trips, and on our last two vacations at the beach the phone came along with me every day.
Point is: the Galaxy Nexus screen is not even true Gorilla Glass, but an unspecified "fortified glass" that Samsung used instead back then. Assumptions are that real Gorilla Glass is more scratch resistant, and Gorilla Glass 2 is an even better product. With all considered, my Galaxy Nexus has no visible scratches -- and I DO check it carefully, as flaws like that tend to bug me. I've taken a chance with the phone, but in the end I'm SO happy that I have been able to fully enjoy the phone as it was intended, rather than have to drag my finger across a slightly rubbery, slightly orange-peely, surface any time I want to use it.
In my own use, a tablet would subject to less potential scratching and wear than my phone. I'm careful with my tech equipment -- but I use it heavily, and I want to enjoy it to the fullest. So far, protectors like Zagg's product do more to compromise my experience than the protection is worth to me. Everyone uses their devices in their own fashion, some are rougher on them than others or more accident prone, and some live in sandier climates... Obviously each has to decide what makes sense for his/her self. For me, considering my usage patterns -- the state of the art of screens and screen protectors is such that I generally won't use one, and I haven't regretted it yet.

Is it really necessary to have a screen protector?

I've had my Note 8 for 9 days now and while I was thinking about buying a screen protector when it arrived, I must admit that I'm quite impressed by the quality of the screen. It just feels so hard to scratch, so much so that one would probably struggle trying to scratch it even on purpose. I don't really see myself scratching it by accident anytime soon, although I must admit I'm this kind of guy who never drops the phone and handles it with extreme care.
I'm just curious to read what you guys think, maybe somebody persuades me to buy a screen protector after all, who knows.

The Gorilla Glass 5 is more shatter-resistant than previous versions and that means it is softer also. I had my Note 7 only a few days before it started picking up micro scratches on the front and back. Your mileage may vary. I'm putting on a Whitestone done and a skin on the back of mine.

Many of us do fine with no protection. Others report getting scratches no matter how hard they try not to.

I've always put a protector on my previous phones but I'm using my Note 8 without a screen protector. Like you, I'm always very careful with my phone and never drop it. The pocket that I put my phone in only contains my phone; I never put loose change or key in there. My Spigen Slim Armor case protects most of the phone and keeps the screen off the table surface if I do put it face down. With all of the issues people have had with curved tempered glass screen protectors, it just seems like more hassle than it's worth. The only one I'd get is the Whitestone Dome but that costs $60 here. Bit pricey.

I always run a protectors. Better safe then sorry.
I take very good care of my stuff. If a scratch did happen you cant take it back. So there would be no way ti fit it without buying a no front glass or new phone.
With a protector you can simply remove it and put on another one.

It's def worth it. On my S8 there was a scratch after few days and I am very careful about my phone so really don't know how it happened.

Same here...it is so minor and you cannot even feel it. Babied it too. Also a small one on the back and it had a case day 1. Something tells me it came like that

Going naked for now. Just watch out for sand, fine sand , seems to be the only thing. If it was a flat screen I would have tempered glass on it.

ANY sharp instrument will scratch if the point is pressed in to the display, period. It is MUCH easier to bang on it with a long blade edge and look like you did nothing than the tip of an x-acto knife. That is what those demos do. Resisting attack across a large area is really what you are seeing. Keys are small like that etc...
Finally, a big part of Gorilla Glass is that it also HIDES or better put doesnt show minor damage as much as other glass. In other words, its there you just don't see it.
I bet a screen for this will be $300-$400. How much is a protector that looks good?

Better safe than sorry. Once it's scratched it would bug the hell out of me. It's a £1000 device.

Throw a screen protector on it. In time, micro-scratches will appear on your screen if you dont!

Note FE, had it on the ironing board (and forgot about it). Folded the ironing board and it very gently slid down it onto the floor face down....very gently....resulted in a 7mm scratch.
Not got one on this yet but it does highlight how pathetically weak GG5 is.

Since its a huge pain to find a glass protector that fits and doesn't screw up touch sensitivity I just grabbed the $8 Skinomi wet install protector, works great including with the edge display and S-Pen.

I believe the micro-scratches are not the actual "glass" screen itself. It's the oleophobic coating that we see scratched.

I personally really don't get the mentality of people who put huges cases and screen protectors on their phones. Most people here are obsessive on having 'the latest' and upgrade yearly when new stuff comes out so they can have the nicest, thinnest, prettiest shiny piece of hardware - Then they go wrap it all up in a thick rubber/plastic case and make it look sh*t. Why buy a device with no bezel if you're gonna put a huge thick case bezel around it!
I've had all my smartphones without cases/screen protectors as that's how they're meant to be and to honest I look after my devices. I usually get 2 year contracts on phones and at the end of 2 years, worst case, a few micro scratches on the screen - That's it. Do these guys bubble wrap their cars? It's a phone, it's designed to be used, it'll get the odd small scratch, just enjoy it for what it is IMO.

I have dropped my Pixel XL and the screen protector cracked but the screen was fine. Same on my Nexus 6. Dropped it on it's face from about 5' and the screen protector cracked all over it but the screen remained crack free. I fell that a glass screen protector takes the abuse of a drop. Granted, I've never dropped a phone with a screen protector so not sure if they would have cracked the screen without a protector but to me, It used to be relatively cheap protection. Some of the better protectors are 40+ now so it's not as easy a decision as it used to be for me.
