OK guys, I need to know which roms are the best for the captivate and why. I am a Vibrant user and have been flashing for a while now, I have a buddy that has a captivate and wants to finally root and flash something spectacular,,,,
The problem is I don't know anything about the teams, and roms for captivate. Serious input please, no flaming or bashing, I really need the hard info,
Battery life, looks, ease of use, modems, kernels, etc...
Thanks
adamholden has some great ones like the: phoenix rom, firefly rom and the new supernova rom (running it awsome) also the serendipity rom

+1 to Serendipity. It's a great all around ROM and doesn't have flashy themes taht look ugly. Just a very nice stock look and it has great battery life.

Took a look at the serendipity rom, looks like a good rom, how stable have the roms from this developer been? And they include the voodoo lagfix from supercurio correct?

Serendipity is stable. Mikey is very active with fixes. It uses hardcores kernel which uses ulk lag fix, which is similar to voodoo

Thanks for the quick response. ulk? have to research that one. But I do like what I have been reading in the serendipity thread.
Can you tell me anything about the pheonix rom? reading thru that one as well, and not seeing many bugs reported there either.
BTW leaving work now, won't be back on until tomorrow so if I don't respond again until tomorrow, Thanks for your input. I hit the thanks button on one of the other posts for you.
Phoenix uses same kernel, although an older version, and lag fix. Also stable also active dev. Matter of opinion as to which is better.
My two cents, currently my favorite 2 are paragon and stripped
IMO Andromeda v1.1 is an smooth stock like rom. 1.5 to 2 times the battery life from JH7 stock rom and better signal coverage.... it utilizes the 850mhz band better than the stock rom.
My vote is for Paragon...awesome and the kernel is super!
Phoenix is also a nice rom and the new Sucker Punch kernel seems to be doing great too.
I stopped using Serendipity a while ago as I did not like some of the changes that were introduced but I need to test the new versions.
I have tried pretty much everything else and those are my top too.
Currently testing Supernova.
Hi,
I was about to post a similar thread. I have an Evo & a buddy of mine who has a Captivate has been having some issues related to Android 2.1. Are these custom roms (Paragon, Phoenix, Serendipity) all Froyo 2.2 roms?
I am an Evo "Fresh Rom" user at first, now I stick with CM6.12 & try nightlies often as well.
Any advice for a solid 2.2 rom would be great!
Thanks,
Rich
I really recommend docs, I'll post link at the end, but I've had the best battery life and stability with it, also the rom kitchen is a huge selling point. You can generate a "cooked" rom with apps, modems, kernels, themes, boot animations, sounds, keyboards, tweaks, to your liking. With many of each to choose from. Very easy, with wipe and no wipe flashes available, pick and choose, don't like something then cook another, no biggie. Themes are most of the popular ones. I've cooked many myself, here is the link to the rom kitchen: http://romkitchen.org/capt/?s=home With out actually generating the rom you can select and choose to see your options. Hope this helps I will also post the roms link
Sent from cappy running docs gingerborg 9.1.8, hardcore k13A, jk4 modem.
I'm actually running gingerborgmod 9.1.8 its a cooked version from borg based off of docs, sorry I don't have link but you can search, he has been updating it with all the latest goodies, kernels etc. give either the kitchen a shot, or gingerborgmod. A shot don't think he'll be disappointed. Any questions just ask.

Tooka a look at Docs kitchen and pretty cool, would be better if I knew the specifics on all the stuff. Guess I need to do some research on the captivate modems, kernels, and other stuff
this is my setup.
Serendipity 5.8
Suckerpunch build #48 OC to 1.12ghz and undervolted
JL3 modem
and i find that i get better battery life with juice defender. some people hate it, but i seem to do better with it....
and with just basic usage, calling, texting websurfing, my phone has dropped 30% in 12.5 hours.

Can someone recommend a 2.2 Rom? i am a little confused if the above listed roms are 2.1 or 2.2?
i'm currently using a cooked up ROM from the Kitchen, and so far it's my favorite Captivate experience. if you know what to do with it, it's nice, and regardless very sleek and smooth. Andromeda, Serendipity, and Firefly are all worth a chance too, some of my favorite ROMs

Specifically for the Samsung Captivate, why did you choose the ROM you have currently flashed on your phone and why? If you know about more than one ROM, would you mind telling me what you liked and disliked about each? It would be very helpful to me.
Please post this on the right section...we want to keep development for actual development...
I'm using Bacon and Axura with Red Soul theme. I love both rom because they are fast!
You can find more information in the ROM thread itself.

I do apologize. Didn't realize I posted here and meant to do so in the Q and A.
Could we get a mod to move it, please?
I asked the same thing...in development.....got a tongue lashing for being in the wrong thread and was directed here....wish you all would make up your mind!!!
I was a flashing fool. Did my fair share of trials and tests.
I ran through the Cognition roms. Loved each one as they got better and better. Vodoo lagfix is pretty easy if you understand how and when to disable. Pretty straight forward and noob friendly.
Perception is fast, shiny and new. Based on the I9000, the roms seem to need a bunch of tweaks and changes to get it to run decently. I was never happy with the performance I got from these and well I never really used it to it's full potential either.
So for now I'm back on JH7. I mostly use the phone just as that, a phone. No real advantage in using a custom rom for that.
It still depends on what you are looking for
Similar to earlier post I used the cog roms for a while. Easy to install and stable.
Currently on perception, much faster then stock our cognition. It has a ton of options for tweaks, but is a little more dangerous because it is less idiot proof. I am on the build 3 release and to be honest I will not be changing my rom for singer time.

Currently running auxura. It is a fantastic rom.... but you need to have a little knowledge on how to flash and use cement.
Its a very complete rom with an awesome theme and it is quick once you set it up correctly.
But. I do live Cognition .... just waiting for another release before. I flash back to it again lol.

I'm using and loving di11igaf's ROM. I used many variations of Cognition and I really appreciate it for bringing me into the world of custom ROMs, but the last version (2.3B6) seemed slow in comparison to AXURA and di11igaf's ROM. I really like the theme and speed of di11igaf's ROM.
Thanks for all the replies! I keep learning more and more every time I check this board out. I'm an ex iOS user and decided to move to Android and everything is tons different, very open, in fact. I think I'll continue to do more research on all the different ROMs and builds and make a little database for myself based on my research and decide from there. Then again, I'm sure the only way to know what I want is to flash each one.
I have yet to see any rom to match the speed of a i9000 based Rom. I have tried almost all of them and always come back to i9000 ROMs as they have the features I want and the best speed. Of course we all have different priorities.
I am currently running Dorian's XXJPY 2.2.1 on my Captivate.
I was looking at some ROMs tonight and saw a bunch that sounded really great. Is there anything better, faster, more stable?
I don't want to overclock or do anything fancy, I just want battery life, speed and stability.
Thanks for helping a noobie at this stuff! I never knew the community was THIS big!
I just flashed Cognition 3.02. Look in the developer portion and read his mission. It looks exactly like what you are looking for.
It's generally regarded as one of the best. I like it a lot, and upgrading is so fast with clockwork recovery.
Please move to q&a.
Sent from my liberated Captivate via XDA App.
If it is just speed and stability you are looking for then you should take a look at Cognition. The past week lots of nice ROMS were released so if you find Cognition lacking to your taste you can easily switch to something else like Perception or Serendipity. Phoenix is highly themed but still a nice ROM if that's what you are into.
Whatever ROM you choose, make sure you do research, it's impossible for someone to completely fill you in about the pros and cons of each ROM since they are changing in a weekly basis. And take your time following directions so you don't end up with an expensive paper weight.
Cheers and good luck.
Hard question to answer. My advice is just pick one to start with...you'll end up flashing non-stop once you start...trust me. I'm using Paragon right now and it's excellent.
Try a few and have fun!

Yeah it is funny cus this thread is just completely opposite
I recommend one with a thread with some hyperbole in the subject line (I realize this is a tall order, but it can be found with some forum searches for superlatives). I would also recommend one in which the developer recommends disabling voodoo lagfix when installing a voodoo lagfix kernel since voodoo lagfix is apparently incompatible with voodoo lagfix.

Sorry I didn't include this in the first post but I'm actually using Dorian's UGJK3 FroYo - Gingerbread Edition. I really like the theme and the visual effects and I wouldn't want to give those up.
So my question restated is: What ROM would be best for speed, stability and battery life while having a nice visual style/theme?
I really like how the Dorian ROM runs and it is definitely faster than stock. I also love the theming and icons, ect.
Thanks. You guys are amazing!

Hi SGS users,
Yesterday I've got my SGS, 2nd hand, it works really amazing ^^ I came from a HTC Hero which is also an amazing device, but this is soooo much smoother & faster.
Now when I opend the forums, I saw a ****load of roms, with all different kind of number/letter combinations like JVQ & stuff like that.
Rightnow I'm running darky's 10.1 extreme rom, and I'm happy with it, but as I'm a flash junkie, I'd like to know some more good roms ^^
Also I'd like to know some good kernels, rightnow I have the kernel that came with darky's 10.1, but it seems this has no undervolt option, which I'd like to use to spare battery when the screen is turned off.
Let me make a quick 'list'
- Some good roms, please =)
- Some/A good kernel, please =)
- Maybe you know some cool stuff, like a awesome bootscreen, or some cool wallpapers/widgets everything is welcome ^^
I hope I don't act greedy, it's not meant this way, I just want to know what the community has to offer. =)
Btw. did anyone notice your phone talks to you when your phone is booting darky's rom for the first time?

I have been on several versions of Darky's ROM for a while and loved the speed it brings to your phone. It also increased the functionality of the phone. I had some issues setting up Exchange email with that ROM so searched for a new one. In that quest I found the GingerReal ROM.
Currently I am on version 7.1 of GingerReal and can safely say it's the fastest and most stable version I have seen. You may want to give it a try.
The Battery life on GingerReal is the best I have seen and I have seen comments for a few others who second me on the good battery life.
Also, try ADW launcher.

I would go to the romkitchen.org and make your own, that way you get what YOU want, I found Darkys a good learner but yearned for more of me
I use damians kernel, not liked around here but works for me, if not then speedmod is good
Boot animations are touchy, they work on some roms or versions and not others, make a backup BEFORE you apply any changes
I'm a new user here (yes...I read all the faqs) but I'm still not fully aware of the ROMS available and their respective benefits. Didn't really see any threads that helped me in the captivate section.
What I'm looking for most is excellent battery life and signal (if that's possible). I tried Cognition and it seemed alright for a bit but then my signal became spotty and battery worse (not sure if it was the ROM or my phone).
If it helps: I'm on stock froyo (on Rogers).
I'm not really interested in a multitude of features that may overload my phone, I'm a minimalist.
You could always try flashing a different modem if you're having issues with signal.

I've found Continuum 6.1 to be the best operating gingerbread ROM for my phone. This after experimenting with pretty much every other ROM out there. Battery life has been good.
I'm a moderate user. Mostly sms and music. I get 2 full days out of a charge when running the music app 2 hours per day and sending 20 or so texts.
This is purely anecdotal. My wife's phone got poor battery life out of the same ROM. Just going to have to try one at a time until you find one that works well for your phone.
Good luck.
Are you looking for a ROM based off gingerbread or froyo?
I would recommend a froyo based rom for stability, serendipity 6.4 treated me pretty well when i first started and now i'm on fasty 2.3 which is pretty good too.
If you live in the northeast USA then i would suggest JW2 or JV5 for modems.
(See this link for modem options and good discussion on the topic, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=876391 Ignore the poll, its out of date.)
If you want to try out the tasty goodness of gingerbread then i suggest trying serendipity 7 or the leaked "stock" 2.3 ROM thats been out for a month now.
Keep in mind that you are more likely to find bugs and random problems with gingerbread ROMs since most (all?) of the current ones are not based off of the i897 captivate ROM but the i9000 instead.

You're going to get a multitude of suggestions being that everyone has their own favorite. What works for some may not work for others. I personally have found that I can get healthy battery life out of most any rom I flash using an OC/UV app. Usage and location has a lot do with it as well. Your best bet will probably be to try different things and explore on your own til you find what works for you. Luckily there are tons of people in these forums who are eager to help and lend advice. I certainly wouldn't have learned as much as I have without them.

Stability and battery life = serendipity 6.4.
Stability on gingerbread = serendipity 7
Awesome features(but you don't want these based off op) = MIUI
Sent from my I897 using XDA Premium App
For a froyo based ROM ill easily agree serendipity is the way to go
And look into the onix kernel
For a gingerbread ROM try either continuum or apex, but avoid the betas just use the stable releases
And look into the talon kernel
Both kernels I recommended are by the same dev and are capable of overclocking (which you don't seem too interested in) and undervolting (this will help with battery life)
If you want to overclock stick with 1.2 ghz, anything higher is usually unstable but you could get lucky, 1.2 is safe though.
For undervolting read around for the guides to oc/UV. Make sure you have a way to wipe your voltage settings if you mess them up (should be built into onix's recovery, and its definitely in talons recovery)
No matter if you choose froyo or gingerbread and whether you use any of my suggestions above, look into the gingerbread bootloaders (try to avoid the i9000 ones, even though they work on the cappy they weren't made for us) I don't know if there are rogers bootloaders for gingerbread but I know the att ones work great and you can probably change the logo later.
The gb bootloaders are obviously required for gingerbread roms, but will work with froyo roms as well, so you may as well grab them now.
As for signal read into modem flashing, make sure you get cwm2 flashable modems for cwm2 recoveries (like onix) and cwm3 flashable modems for cwm3 recoveries (like talon)
Your best bet here is trial and error
Jk4 seems to be a good fallback modem for functionality (no frequency dancing issues which can cause roaming or no signal) but I'm not a fan of its signal strength in general or battery life, personally I like kc1 and zsjpg depending on what region I'm in.
Anyway I hope this info helps
Try them out for yourself. We can give you what, works for us but might not work for you. A search would have told you this. Thread closed.
Hello everyone,
I've been a fellow follower of the forum since I got my Galaxy S about 4 months ago. It is an amazing phone.
I've tried CM7 at the beginning, MIUI and several ROMs (currently with Darkys 10.1) and I had always a problem.
With CM7/MIUI the problem is battery life and some incompatibilities like codecs, playing flv files and so on. I am really having problems to know the current state of CM7 cores, mostly about if the battery life is comparable with stock rom.
I really want to try something that is still evolving but stable, that when I want to upgrade I don't have to wipe everything, and that I don't need to spend days to have everything working.
My main concern is battery life when using 3G, now it is simple not enough and the quantity of applications that can be run in background. For GPS I use GPS AIDS and seems to work fine.
So I really want to stick to only one ROM (Darky for me is too slow for updates and I have some issues with it)
EDIT: I am currently testing CM
Thanks!
if you want speed choose MIUI / CM7
If you want battery life Choose something similar to stock
if you want both ............ Tough sh!t lol

I used CM7 once, but what is so special about it? I only saw speed y the selectable themes. Then I had compatibility and codec issues, also needed to find some driver for the pc to use usb tethering.
I installed juwe over JVH with Darkys but I am getting FC with EDT app and reboots in the browser.... any ideas? Something wrong? I installed it via CMW with Wipe Version.
Also for Tethering you need to copy some script from one folder to another... why the Semaphore Kernel doesn't come with that predefined?
I may try SURFACE as for CM I need to mess with Odin.

As I am sure you have realized by now, the reason threads like this very little usefulness is that they almost immediately become Fanboi Fiestas. Each respondent will tell you that their favorite ROM will solve all of your problems and wash your car at the same time.
In the end, the only proper judge of which ROM is best for you will be YOU. You simply need to select a handful of ROMs that seem good to you, and test them out. No advice, no fanboi screed, no feature list can do that job for you.
Reading your posts, I can possibly give you some ideas of what to look for in very broad strokes.
First of all, the battery problem in CM7 is pretty much corrected by recent development. Most users now get about the same battery life as they would on the average Samsung ROM. However, I would NOT suggest you install CM7. If as you say you want to install a single ROM and then be done with it, then CM7 is certainly not for you as updates come every day or two. They don;t NEED to all be installed, but most users do. CM7 is the ROM for those who like to tweak and tune their phones and rewards people who like to experiment and really dig into the nuts and bolts of the OS. Since you say that when you installed CM7 for a little while months ago all you noticed was that it was faster and had lots of pretty themes, and you claim not to have time to even read a thread to learn about a ROM, then CM7 is ABSOLUTELY NOT FOR YOU.
Insanity and MUIU are both ROMs based on CM7 the same way the Samsung ROMs are based on the Samsung android version. Each have their strengths and weaknesses. Insanity is closer to CM7 in look and feel, while MUIU is closed source and by default very much like iOS. Each one has devoted fans, so feel free to try them.
The endless numbers of Samsung ROMs are mainly themed versions of the basic Samsung code, with some kernel tweaks thrown in. You are usually best off choosing the one you like the looks of best, if you choose to go in that direction. Samsung ROM fanbois and devs will usually tell you their ROM is incredibly fast and feature packed, and so much better than anyone else's ROM. Whether that is true or not, take all such claims with a grain of salt.
Go out, download 5 or so roms, read their install instructions carefully, familiarize yourself with ODIN and the three button recovery method...and start exploring.
Good luck.

Hi, Thank you so much for your comment.
I am familiarized with Odin and CMW since I had the phone and I tried so many ROMs when I started. The thing is that now I don't have so much time to read all the posts I only read the first ones with the main info.
Now I will give a try to MilkyS and then I will try CM when I have more time.
I will update you guys on the topic.
Thanks!
i try cm7 it s better but battery drain is too

What do you mean lack of changelog? Its on every post i post a rom post 1 and post 2 included...

These kind of threads are pointless, like was mentioned earlier, each to his own ROM, some that work for some may not work for others, it does`nt make a ROM bad/unstable blah blah, only one way to judge a ROM, try it out then decide, no need for all this prick measuring...just my €1:74..
Ok thr best rom for you is jetpack, its pretty stable and has all features you are looking for with excellent battery life its very easy to install as the developer of that rom has made a simple yo use app. That takes care of all of the simple steps like wipe/no wipe, which kernel, which theme (two themes - basic stock theme or blue cm7 theme) and which modem! Jetpack's latest version which is v3.1 has some problems with tw4 so i advice you to not install v3.1 and wait for v3. 2 which will be there in 1-2 days as said by the developer!

kernel: galaxian
Rom: jetpack
