[Q] Anyone has a 1006 Captivate? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello.
I have a 1006 Captivate, and can't make the gps to work anymore.
I remember I had usable GPS with Axura and JI6, but now I can't get a lock anymore, not even with JI6 (tested it with espyel's rom and Geomod).
So I want to know if anyone with a 1006 Captivate managed to make his gps work fine. I'd like to know the rom and the configuration used.
Thanks in advance.
Whipon.

What rom are you on now, most roms have good gps now a days.

I'm using latest Super Nova. I can't get good GPS with any rom.
EDIT: Just got a lock in my house. 15/10 meter accuracy.
I'll have to test it tomorrow while driving.
EDIT 2: It took 2 minutes to get a lock with Ndrive. And it lost the lock in a few seconds.
My next phone will not be a Samsung.

I have 3 1006 captivates and none have "good" gps. I can make one usable, but the other two are unacceptable no matter what. Have to send another back for shutdowns so we will see how the next refurb performs.
As far as what works best, the 2.2.1 roms provide the best results. I would play the refurb game if I were you until you get one you can live with.

I can't refurbish it. As you can see under my avatar, I live in Argentina.
I bought mine to a local reseller. I'm stuck with it for now.
I surely will buy a new phone in a few months, when the new devices get released.

Sorry.... didn't see where you from as I use the XDA App..... I hate having to scroll through half page signatures.

I see people saying things like this. They have a 1007 or 1011. What's the difference and how do you know which one you have?

remove your phone battery, you will see the build number along with your imei. the build number is 4 digits, like 1007, 1010, etc.

Thank you

Guys what is a 1006 captivate? I never got good GPS with any rom/kernal...
The best I got is a 30 sec lock. But it lost me when I moved like 10 meters.
So what's a 1006 captivate? I think I have it.....
EDIT: sorry I should have read all the way. I'm checking my battery now lol

GPS files ported from Epic

Over on the galaxy s forum (under galaxy s development forum) someone has taken the gps files from the epic and put them on his galaxy s. He is now seeing great results with his GPS.
Can somebody please do this for the Vibrant and report the results?
(The thread has the link to the files on the androidcentral forums, sorry I don't have link privileges yet)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=759976
did this on my vibrant and have already posted the (positive) results in the original thread.
Kind of mixed results over there.
I installed this, and have noticed an improvement. I went from ussually 40 to 50 feet accuracy, to about 20, and it seems to be locking more quickly...
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Haven't seen an answer from anyone in that thread yet... anyone with a Vibrant who has done this notice in GPS Test if this corrected the time the GPS uses being off?
Very mixed results. As usual for the gps fix threads.

Typos, incorrect words, gibberish, and other nonsense brought to you courtesy of Swype.
I applied the epic fix and I now get in use of 3 to 4 sats in less then a minute with an accuracy of less then 30 ft.
The time is still off by 5 hours.

Odd isn't it? I just don't get it honestly.. I get 4 sats in use with sub 20 ft accuracy almost always.. My wife's Vibrant shows 7 to 9 sats in use same sub 20ft accuracy in the exact same spot heh.

The time isn't off. The GPS Test program is written by a company based in the UK. Look up the current time in the UK and I bet that is what time you are seeing. I'm pretty certain the developer has hard coded the GMT offset into the app itself which is GMT+1 for London.
I flashed it, and while it shows my location very quickly, I am still not seeing the GPS locking in GPS status app.
It shows 11 visible but 0 locked. All in all still not a strength of the device.

I think that's more of a bug in whatever generates the nmea output. It has shown me 20ft locks with one sat in use, which is impossible of course. It would be nice if they would fix it, but at least it gets a fix faster now.
For the time, it's not a bug in gps test. On my g1, it shows the time properly, that's a samsung bug.
I tried flashing epic gps files via CWMR and I ended up with no GPS at all, once rebooted again, the stock GPS got there back, I checked the files that were supposed to be there were not. I have my input in the OP in Samsung Galaxy S development forum. Weird to say the least. I hope the fix comes here quicker than what Samsung vague September ETA.

indeed, or hoepfully samsung is referring to something like early september rather than mid/late.
No improvement for me, on Vibrant6. Getting 2 locks out of 10 seen in my backyard, same as before.

[Q] New Captivate; update worth it?

I Just recieved my new captivate (sent the other one in for warranty issues) in the mail, and am wondering if it's worth it to upgrade this 100% stock captivate to JH7, or if I should wait for 2.2?
Another suggestion
Upgrade to the Cognition ROM...you get JH7 with a lot of other goodies... http://cognition.theidiotshideout.net/phpmyfaq/index.php?action=show&cat=1
The GPS issue appears to have been resolved with this ROM, and the whole phone seems quite a bit snappier.

That's awesome; I'm gone for a week-ish and THIS pops up?
Major thanks.
+1 for the Cognition ROM... I have had my device 2 days now and the first thing I did on night #1 was blow away all that ATT and Samsung [email protected] and load Cog.... this ROM rocks... super fast for me. No telling when 2.2 will be baked enough on our devices for me to use it as my daily driver.... weeks maybe....
Flashed Cognition 2.1; Works wonderfully, sans GPS... This phone is turning out to be a real debbie downer in that department.
My GPS has been somewhat OK.... for the 3 times I used it, it was pretty darn close. It drifted a little when driving highway speeds, but crap, close enough for me most times. I think my phone is a late build... I waited for a while to pick one up due to the glass shortage that occurred earlier... curious, can we tell when our units left the factory, and if so, I wonder if they are coming out with different GPS chips on them?
One last thought - did you do a batt pull once your new ROM was in place? Just shooting off ideas... I hope it starts working better for you... I am really liking this phone compared to my Bold 9000.

I've never gotten a lock with either of my Captivates; What do you mean by a battery pull? Just lug the battery out of the phone while it's running and put it back in? I'm curious as to how that would be beneficial to GPS. (I've done a reset, but that's about it)

Yes, exactly. Pull the battery out, wait for a minute, put it back in and reboot. In many cases, this has (for me) fixed weird little issues after ROM updates etc. I have no evidence that this would affect the GPS in your case, but I thought I'd mention any tips/methods that have helped me in the past.
Yeah a battery pull usually solves a lot of issues when upgrading roms...I've had t so that twice.

Yeah that's what people are saying. Mine starting working with perception perfectly, not changing a thing here.

lol like Endgadget says... it will re-screw up your already screwed-up GPS by defaulting it back to the non-working default settings
Only thing that has ever worked for me has been the Jupiter tweaks on the Dev forum.

I bought my Captivate not long after they were release and never have had an issue with GPS....with Perception ROM I get a lock in less than 10 seconds INSIDE the house...its about half a block off but that's pretty accurate in my book

Dude.....Really? Half a block? That's not accurate man that's about as bad as everyone else's captivate . I'm sorry to be rude but I'm sick of people saying "its perfect" " it locks in half a second to 82 sats with 2 inch accuracy" . Post some proof of your awesome gps then do us a favor and share how you made it work because I'm pretty sure Samsung screwed them all up. Sorry for the rant.........
(I would bet that your "lock" INDOORS would be celltower triangulation and that no birds were actually locked as this is were many people assume there gps works when it in reality suck like everyone else's)
Sent from my Captivate that can't figure out were the hell it is in the world......
I'm really starting to think that the problem is in the antennas. I've never had a problem getting a lock pretty fast, yes lock, not agps approximate. However, it's getting it to keep a lock that is the problem. I always had the dreaded blue circle, or out right gps signal lost. However, for about 3 days straight it has been sunny. And for the first time I tried putting the phone up near the console, back outward and not downward, and it has been perfect. No circle, no lag, no problems. I never had to do this with my other phones. Hell, my WinMo device that I frequently use as bluetooth gps receiver works fine in the passenger seat, or floorboard for that matter. It just seems as if it has to be perfect conditions for the phone get decent gps reception, which to me seems like antenna problems.

The glgps daemon, jupiter.xml, and you! (How to make the GPS behave better)

Hi Vibrant owners!
I made a post over in the Captivate forum about how we can configure the GLGPS daemon in our phones (this is used to control the GPS behavior)
Attached are some update.zips with a new glgps daemon pulled from the Nexus S, secgps.conf and a jupiter.xml configuration inside. The GPS chipset is common among all SGS models, so this should work for you. Please try it, feedback is appreciated!
Sweet!
Sent from the helm of the vibrant Galaxy S!
I thought the vibrant does not use the jupiter.xml
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I know at least one model of Vibrant does (Bell), not sure about the others (CDMA does not I believe)
With the vibrant froyo leaks, we now use gpsd and jupiter.xml Samsung decided to make it the same across the board. At least for the i9k, cap and vib. Not sure aboit the epic and fascinate though

Wow. Your like saying that people doesn't have to fix their gps if yours has been already fixed.
im saying if you've upgraded to a new rom like most here then it should have been fixed. what kind of fix are you expecting a 100/100 Sat lock the instant you turn on the GPS app?

Yeah it should have been fixed, but to some it isn't. Maybe because of the hardware or other issues.

I'm not expecting that, we all just want it to be usable like having a better accuracy.
sorry it's getting late and my brain is not fully functional ^_^ though it is sorta confusing how the same hardware can produce different results with the newer 2.2 roms.
It's not the same though.
The antenna got revised in October 2010. See the post about the gps fix in the Vibrant general forum.

It seems the newer antenna did fix it - the older design is unreliable so "identical" hardware can have different GPS performance depending on how much the connection has worked loose.

if you compare to HTC model like HD2, you will see that vibrant is very slow altough gps is fixed...I once use htc hd2 with MDJ mod for android GPS is real fast, never more than one minutes from start ( case compared when u totally delete gps data) I don't know how HTC did it...just for your guy to concern
My GPS has never worked and I've tried every ROM and every fix. Sure I can get a lock on 8 of 12 satellites, and I can easily get 10 foot accuracy. As soon as I try to use Navigation, it sucks. It'll jump around by a few feet here and there, and that's enough to totally throw off the navigation. All of a sudden it thinks I'm the wrong street and its telling me to turn around.
im sorry guys, that sucks. mine has been fine for a while now. and i navigate quite a bit as I am new to Cali. Initially it truly pissed me off when I was on 2.1, telling me i'm staying on the highway when i infact took the off ramp etc... lol. I'd get a replacement.
Can anyone ever say the word GPS without sending everyone into a pissing frenzy?
BACK ON TOPIC:
OP which one do you recommend starting out on for us Vibrant owners?
I highly.. very highly recommend Sombionix' Nero 3. I've used a lot of roms and this one is very very fast. And I usually refrain from saying "fast" because most phones are initially fast when new roms are installed but this one definitely deserves it even after massive app installs and use.
I tryed out the google version and it killed my GPS it sees 12 birds but won't connect to any.
Which do I install? I have a Tmobile Vibrant. You have 3 files listed. Thanks.

I'm switching back to the captivate

I had the captivate before but traded it for a BB torch for the sole reason of the gps issue ... Is the a real fix yet for the captivate and if so were and how?
