Has anyone tried SlideIT Keyboard? It seems to do the same thing as Swype, allow you to type by sliding your finger around the keyboard, even in combination with tapping on the letters within the same word. It also has predictive suggestions before you finish a word which might come in handy.
I was wondering if anyone was using this and if it would be able to be installed without requiring any hacking to make it work? When I changed my build.prop file to install Swype it made my tablet very unstable and I had to revert to a backup to make the tablet usable again. If I can have the equivalent (or even better performing app) of Swype able to be installed directly from the Market it would be worth the $6 to me.
I have Swype on my phone, and it works great.
I haven't tried the hacks on my gTablet (VEGAn 5.1.1). I have tried the SlideIT demo straight from the Android Market. It seems to work OK, but I found it unsatisfying because of the size of the screen. Sliding your finger on a 10" screen is 2.5x the work as on a 4" screen, and none of the keyboards seem to have a feature to make themselves smaller.

Well I took the plunge and haven't looked back. It works perfectly on Vegan 5.1.1 and since installing I haven't thought about switching to another keyboard. I am able to hold the tablet in one hand and use the other to quickly type instead of pushing the tablet down with each peck of the keys.
For anyone who is not comfortable or has had issues getting Swype installed on the G Tablet, you might want to give SlideIT a try.
I just got the Nexus 4. Needless to say, it arrived the day the S4 was announced, but whatever. It's cheap, relative to what I paid for the S2 I had from T-mobile.
I bought it to get away from bloatware. After updating my S2 to ICS I could type faster than the characters showed up on the screen. Reminded me of my days pushing the limits of a 386.
I've had the Nexus 4 for exactly one day. Immediately I notice some nice things:
1. Definitely feel snappier. This is a big plus.
2. The auto-correct is less intrusive. If I hit backspace after auto-correct does something, it will revert the entire correction. That is nice; in the S2 I had to turn it off because it was driving me nuts (texting in different languages; not to mention it insisted on capitalizing Work but not wednesday).
And then the bad:
1. Can't bcc myself on every email. How lame. No, I don't use gmail and I don't want you. And I am used to doing things this way and don't want to change my email handling on umpteen computers to deal with sent folders. So I had to download K9, and the fact that you have to go into a menu to find the compose function is just plain stupid.
2. Wow, I miss the dialer on the S2. I would just start typing in digits. It would search my contacts by digits *or* by the equivalent letters. Just beginning to type someone's name and I could find them. Now I have to hit the magnifying glass and type in the name to find someone.
3. I also miss the toggles on the slider (whatever you call that thing you pull down from the top of the screen). Takes several clicks to turn Bluetooth on and off now.
These things may not seem like a big deal, but for those of us who don't want to spend our days watching laughing pandas, the little things in software can make or break the experience. That is how Apple got ahead (and still is, in many cases).
Generally I think Google (and possibly all smartphones) missed a few things. Or else I'm old and stubborn. One of them is the utter lack of control over what's going on. Not being able to "quit" an app is annoying. And then you get an app to kill apps---but someone works around that. Happened with AirDroid. Had to uninstall it! Couldn't kill it, and couldn't figure out how to not keep this connection "open" all the time. So I feel like I can't use it.
And my biggest pet peeve is keyboard layout. If you know the history, you know where QUERTY came from. Then came Dvorak, which took off only with a handful of nerds, but is a smart concept. Now we take something that looks nothing like a typewriter and shove QUERTY into it. Look, I understand the need to keep things familiar, but from what I understand, it's extremely difficult to customize the keyboard layout. I hope someone can point me to an app that allows me to do that, but I haven't found one. The world's idea of "customizable keyboard" is to have a Japanese schoolgirl dancing behind semi-transparent keys. Sorry, but no. In the English language you should have the apostrophe on the main keyboard and for most languages the comma should be there, too. I don't use the "speak" key or the smiley face one. Hell, take the space bar, which is 5 keys wide and make it 2.
The keyboard layout without punctuation is a big problem. Already kids can't spell worth a damn. Now I find myself not using commas in emails, etc. either. It's really disturbing.
There's no angry old man post icon?

Opera just downloaded 1600 messages by POP. Now, because of something K9 or the Nexus email client did, Opera lost track of which emails were new and I got 1600 duplicates. Am I doing things that wrong or does it just not work?

There are tons of keyboards, toggle apps and widgets and dialers in Google Play and XDA. Stop wining and start looking mate
Samsung packaged their apps such as dialers, keyboards, email clients and all the other stuff you like into the bloat called touchwiz. The vanilla android is lean without those bells and whistles. Like what the previous post said, explore the playstore. There are better apps there than what samsung packaged in the s2. You just need to explore..

1. Not sure about the BCC...but there's a general email that you can use for non-gmail accounts....
2. can be easily solved with dialer mod....most roms comes with this feature
3. i havent been on stock for a while...but im sure Bluetooth toggle would be under quick pull down in the new 4.2.2. If not you can always flash another rom, which is better in my opinion since there are more toggle options.

Yes I agree with the post above. Try cm10.1 it's a way better alternative than stock. If you want more customization go with paranoid android or aokp rom. Nexus 4 is meant to be rooted! There's a sticky on how to root and unlock your bootloader. Very easy. Check out the screen shots in the post your screen shot section and see what other nexus 4 users have done with their phones. It's really an open playground
On stock 4.2.2 you can long press on Bluetooth and WiFi to toggle them on and off in the quick settings menu.

I don't know what CM is, but it strikes me as some third party firmware (or is it just a collection of changes to Android)? Is there a "tutorial" page that explains the layers and what they are called?

1. Look at what I'm magically doing here. It's called multi-quote. Learn how to use it.
2. You came here essentially asking for advice. When someone gives you some advice (even if it's not what you wanted to hear) you don't start being rude to them with no valid reason.
3. Hey, here's an idea. If you don't know what CM is (seriously? ) then Google it. There is a 'tutorial' page, it's the first Google result for cyanogenmod.
4. Where else would he be talking about other than on this forum? It doesn't take a genius to navigate to the dev section and check out some of the available ROMs.
5. As for the bluetooth toggle, it takes a swipe down then a click. No more than was needed on TouchWiz.
6. There are tonnes of third party dialers available with T9, pick one and install it. You can almost certainly get a Holo theme for whichever one you choose as well. If you're really that desperate and need it to be within the stock app, flash a custom ROM.
The key is that stock Android is about as lean as you can get. Rather than give you every conceivable bell and whistle, you get a blank slate and the ability to customize everything to YOUR desire, and not Samsung's or HTC's.
Everything you're asking about is available through various apps that are easily installed and just as easily reversed if you don't like them.
Ignore the people telling you to flash roms and stuff like that, those are options for the hobbyists. If you decide to start playing around with the Android system you can make a lot of fun changes, but it's not necessary on the Nexus.

This was useful, you have to try and find answers for your question on your own initialy. This is not kindergarten where people hold your hand and tell you everything you want to know. If after searching well enough you can`t get an answer or solution to your problem, then you post your question in the Q&A thread.

You seem to have a zillion posts which would indicate you have been here for a while but you must have been a noob once yourself and asked questions. Yes I know the search function is our friend but sometimes just asking a question is the best way to go because it also generates other things. I, for example, didn't know about wigitsoid until I hooked into this thread.
To the original poster, I have the following advice. Read up averything you can on what can be done with this phone. I, like you, came to one from a Galaxy S2. Had it 2 days and sold it. I was disappointed that the so called 4.7 inch screen was in fact smaller than that of my S2 because of the soft buttons. The colour saturation was gash and the camera really was a disappointment. I then went for an S3, Note, Note 2, Lumia 920 and chopped my company Blackberry SIM into an iPhone 4S. I was changing phones faster than most people change underwear....... But all the while I hung out here and read what was going on. Couple of weeks ago I sold the Note 2 and bought another 16GB Nexus 4.
I have flashed the Paranoid Android contrasty kernel and the screen is now 'alive". I installed the Full Screen Toggle app and Button Savior app and now I have the full glory of the 4.7 inch screen. I'm running Launcher8 which gives me and even better live tile system that WP 8.
Got a nice leather flip case which I had to hack and slash to invert as everything seems to open down instead of up like in the old days (think of how the "Beam me up Scotty" communicator flipped open).
Tried most of the enhanced camera apps but sadly the camera still doesn't meet my expectations, but other than that, the Nexus 4 went from a cheap..Meh!!!! phone to being the "Dogs Bolloxs"

If you long press the full stop (period) key, a comma will appear. Now you can use commas again
That said, all you need is an empty day and a few hours to play around with the phone to get yourself familiar with it. Then you'll love it more than your S2.

For number 3, swipe down the notification tray with 2 fingers at the same time, which takes you to "quick settings". Then long press on the bluetooth icon to turn on or off. For punctuation, long press on the period key and a little pop up will appear with several frequently used punctuation marks. slide to the one you one and let go. easy peasy

I use Swiftkey from the Play store. Great keyboard, I can even have arrow keys. It has a comma left of the space bar, a full stop to the right.
Its autocorrect even gets apostrophes right pretty much all of the time (without the need to type them!). It has a British English dictionary available. Mind you, it is QWERTY not QUERTY in British layout.
I've got emoji (extended smileys) in Handcent, my texting app, but even that only has a smiling old man. Sorry can't help there.
Don't these people ever watch that YouTube video when they signed up at xda-devs?

If i would be ranting in all my posts i would be banned 20 times allready. What irritates me is that some users don`t even make an effort to look in Google Play,XDA or on Google search and just post a question for an easy service. You can check all my posts and see i try to help users, And yes i was a noob too when i started with android, but searching and trying gets you a long way. If you are realy stuck or don`t know whta to do then you post a question.
I thought I would give the stock keyboard a chance as I usually use SwiftKey on my note 2. I thought it had improved until I tried SwiftKey again and realised how much better it is still.
What are your thoughts on Samsung stock keyboard?

The samsung keyboard is like a big iphone keyboard. Can't long press for captions or symbols smh... What's the point?
I find a make so many more spelling mistakes with the stock keyboard. It's a shame really.

Made a post about this in another section. . I've tried so many keyboards recently, and over the course of many years.. Swipe was awesome when phones were only 3.7-4-3" .. it still is kind of neat , but frankly I never seem to use swipe. So swiftkey was for me as well.. bought it a long time ago and used it as my primary keyboard for the past many phones.
Recently I saw someone post another keyboard recommendation,. Called Kii Keyboard. Its pretty much the best of all worlds, what I love about it, its super easy to customize. So its like Swiftkey in everyway, but more custom options,.
Advantages of Swiftkey?
I've not used Swiftkey since I had the SGS1.

I have used Swype since the 1, and as my 5 arrived today, first thing i did after uninstalling the Optus bloat was to add Swype.

Both SwiftKey and the Samsung keyboard also support swiping now.
The advantage of SwiftKey is you can use the swype style if you want, or you can do regular typing without spaces and it'll work out what you are writing. The latter technique is way faster and more accurate than swyping in most cases, and you can still swipe if you want as well!
I have been using swift key since the galaxy s2 and never looked back. Every time I use another keyboard I always wish it was swift key. When I first got my s5 I used the stock one for a little bit and was making mistakes left and right and the predictions were not very good.
Anyone that I have recommended swift key to loves it as well.

PROOF: Go to SETTINGS | LANGUAGE AND INPUT | SAMSUNG KEYBOARD SETTINGS (gear icon) | PREDICTIVE TEXT | PRIVACY POLICY
Takes you directly to.... drum roll.. SwiftKey site and lists the privacy policy for the software Samsung licensed.
The reason I point this out is that other than some big theme changes, the engine for prediction (when fully enabled) is SwiftKey. To reduce my memory footprint, even though I own SwiftKey that I'd purchased back when I used an S3, I've not installed it again. That said, I've used both.
Baring the themes and the cloud service to sync your predictions to your multiple devices, performance should be identical.
Granted, it's well hidden, but here's how to unlock more of the Swiftkeyness (sp?):
1. Go to SETTINGS.
2. Go to "Language and Input".
3. Click on the settings icon for "Samsung Keyboard".
4. Note, you can add more input languages (scroll down as you need the additional languages list).
5. Click on "Predictive Text".
You can now learn from Facebook, Gmail, Twitter, Messages and so on to improve the predictions. This is part of the Swiftkey magic, to learn from the services you use.
6. Go back to Samsung Keyboard Settings.
7. Click on Keyboard swipe.
Interesting, one of the selections (default) is SwiftKey Flow. A further indication that it's licensed from SwiftKey.

Whether this is true or not, SwiftKey performs so much better with more precise key presses and less mistakes. Samsung need to perform some sort of better key calibration imo.

I do not disagree that the ability to load a theme on SwiftKey that has a better keyboard layout and key size is fantastic.
The best thing for Samsung? License the keyboard themes from SwiftKey so that we can choose a better layout without having to install another product.
SwiftKey still makes money on each phone sold, or at least that would be the prudent method to license, so even if this reduced SwiftKey purchases they'd make great money if the Samsung Keyboard mirrored even more SwiftKey customizability.

Am not a fan of Samsung stock keyboard. Am also using an application for my keyboard.
swiftkey for the win!!
simply because it synchronizes all your data and you have the same keyboard no matter what device you will have in the future instead of having to relearn everything..
As has been pointed out the Samsung keyboard is Swiftkey. Adapt it more to your liking in the keyboard settings. If you have used Swiftkey on a previous device and setup a cloud account it will be faster as it has already learnt from your typing. The Samsung Keyboard gets better over time. Also, the Samsung Keyboard has shortcut texts keys for the numbers. Long press a number to insert text. I like this alot.

TouchPal is not a bad option although the subscription model sucks. Kii Keyboard lacks the ability to learn from Facebook etc.
I have to say that my main issue with the Samsung keyboard is the lack of symbols on the main keyboard which allows for quicker typing and the fact it takes up so much damn screen space with no option to resize.
Any of you never gave a shot to google keyboard? You can enable swipe typing on it. And it's better (for me) at predicting new words than both swiftkey and sammy's. It feels like good old swype when it was fast (even faster).

Because sometimes when I type something, it does not show me what I'm typing up top. The three choices it gives me are totally not what I'm typing, so I can't add the word.
And would be even sweeter if I could give some words a priority rating, like "high" or "medium" or "low".

did you link it to your google account?
that is the whole point of swiftkey...that it learns....and that you can sync it across various devices
mine has everything learned, like my address...when i type in the street number, the street name, etc pops up as a choice next

Yes, it's linked to my Google. I've been a SwiftKey user for two-three+ years now.
And no, it does not learn everything.
But yeah it knows my address and so many other things, which is why I love it.
I regret thoughtlessly letting my ES File Explorer update whenever it wanted. The newer versions seem to have a lot of problems with updating the screen and are, in general, sluggish on my NST.
I currently have version 3.2.5.1. Does anyone have an older version on hand?

The version I am currently using (attached) I've had for at least a year, and it has never failed me. Unfortunately, I can't tell you what the version is, since I'm using your framework-res mod and the gray text blends in with the gray background

Glad to be of assistance. Don't forget that you can turn off Auto-Update by navigating [Quick Access Menu > Settings > Update settings > Uncheck "Auto check"]. That way, you aren't ever "tempted" to update to the next version

It's very odd. It almost never works, but once in a blue moon, I'll try it, and it functions correctly. I've just resorted to ignoring it and using the "swipe to the left or right" function to change the view.
I am not sure that we are thinking about the same thing. I'll try to explain. In default mode when brosing directories I see an icon grid with very limited space for filenames. It is irritating when I try to choose the correct one from whole bunch of similar named ones, when the differencr is at the end of their file name, which is shortened/hidden. I want to change the vie mode from grid to list or something similar that would allow the filenames to be displayed fully. Do you have any solution for this? (Now I switch to Root Browser when I really need the list view, but that is quite an inconveniance)

Oh - pardon my mistake, there, I had forgotten what the view button actually did!
I do know to what you're referring, but I can't say that I know of a way to do that at the moment. However, I'm doing some research and experimentation to see f I can find out either an alternate way to switch views or a way to fix the f/c hitting "View" gives us. I'll keep you posted.
Not sure why I didn't find this the first time I went looking, but here is a place with many older versions of the app. Scroll down the page until you get to "previous versions" then hit the "view more" button.
I tried the earliest v. 3.x and it still produced the crash on "view"--something I had never noticed before with whatever version I originally had. Probably I never tried it.
The last 1.6x version (1.6.2.3) is stylistically a little different but has the (crashless) option to change from icons to list format AND the settings menu system is like the native B&N settings menu (yay!), i.e., you can read it easily.
Not sure about all other capabilities, but I'm easy on what I ask it to do. I use Root Browser for the heavy duty stuff.

Thanks - the newer version does work, but requires a lot of patience until screens are displayed correctly. I was always wondering why eStrongs still pushes updates to 2.1 devices that are too memory hungry to run properly - but here we go.

No similar behavior on current market versions.
Waze uses celebrity voices for navigation occasionally but they are only available for a limited time.

It seems the old method of downloading a voice then replacing the .mp3 files in the folder now either result in no audio at all or just a glitchy experience.
It would be great to have a module that allows users to replace the voices with one of the old ones.

How to get Waze celebrity and other voices back onto your Waze app
Hey, Merry Christmas everybody! I finally cracked the code - I hacked the waze celebrity voices back onto my Waze app!
As most of you have figured out, Waze recently disabled the ability to use whatever voices that you copy into the "sound" folder. With older versions you could do so, but now they just won't play when you choose the folder you dumped the voices into. Instead, you'll be greeted with the frustrating sound of silence anytime you choose that voice in settings. Add to this the annoying fact that new celebrity voices are updated onto your voices menu as a promotional thing, only to be automatically deleted after a certain amount of time, and you'll see why I was this close to downgrading my Waze version just to be able to get whatever voice when I could get it! However, after ages of poking at this I finally figured it out: it's just a simple file flag change.
SHORT/GEEK VERSION
*I'm assuming you're rooted.
*Download whatever celebrity voices you want (the folders and their mp3s) into a desired location on your phone for copying and/or backup
*Using the Waze app, download a useless foreign voice and make a note of the name
*Copy all the mp3s of your desired celebrity voice
*/data/data/com.waze/waze/sound/[The useless foreign voice folder]/Paste (overwrite) the desired celebrity voice mp3s over the mp3s already there
*Long press any mp3 you just pasted in/Select all/3-dot menu icon/"Change SE context"/"Enter context manually"
*Manually type in:

u:object_r:app_data_file:s0:c512,c768
*Press OK
*Change all mp3 permissions to "rw-------" (0600)
*Rejoice!
THOROUGH/NON-GEEK VERSION:
*I recommend being rooted, since you have to be able to access, copy, and edit Waze system files with a root explorer app. How to root your phone is beyond the scope of this short tutorial. Good luck.
*Using Root Explorer, make a separate folder to hold your downloaded voices wherever you want in your file system (I just made a folder called "Celebrity Voices" within /data/data/com.waze/waze/sound, and Waze doesn't screw with it, but it will delete any other celebrity/promotional folders it wants from the "sound" folder on your next update).
*Download whatever celebrity voice you want onto your phone, and copy/paste it into the folder you just made.
*Now do the following: [your new folder]/long press any mp3 file/3-dot menu icon/"Change SE context". You should see a popup window that has something like this under the file name:

*Now do the same in your Waze "sound" folder /data/data/com.waze/waze/sound/(Any currently working Waze voice folder like "eng_nathan" or whatever)/long press any mp3 file/3-dot menu icon/"Change SE context". Now you should see something like this:

*Waze won't allow you to just make your own folders you can choose within the app voice menu, because it's not programmed to (this is why it won't screw with the folder you created- it doesn't know it's there!). So, you'll have to copy your desired voice files into an already existing voice folder that you know you won't use and paste them over its files- something like Serbian or another foreign language you don't speak and know you'll never need. Basically you're hijacking the folder Waze uses and replacing it with voices you want.
*First you have to go get those voices on your phone: Waze app/left swipe screen/gear symbol(preferences or settings)/Voice directions. Choose a voice you know you won't need (Example: I use "Deutsch - Mica" for my Arnold Schwarzenegger voice), and tap it to start downloading. This should take you back to the main screen where you'll see the red text showing you the download progress. Wait until it's finished.
*Now go back to your downloaded voice folder: Long press any mp3/Select all (a little square icon)/COPY
*Go into /data/data/com.waze/waze/sound/[the folder of your new Waze voice you just downloaded]/PASTE (choose "yes" if asked to overwrite existing files).
*Long press any mp3 you just copied over/Select all/3-dot menu icon/"Change SE context"/"Enter context manually"
*Manually type in:

u:object_r:app_data_file:s0:c512,c768
*Press ok. Watch the magic happen. Congrats, you just "hacked" your Waze voices. And also, you just earned a geek point. Score!
*Double check under the mp3 file names that the permissions are set to "rw-------". If not, do the following: Long press any mp3/Select all/3-dot menu icon/Permissions/Only check "Read" and "Write" next to Owner, and set all others to unchecked/Press OK.
*Now go to Waze and see if your celebrity of choice gives you directions.
NOTES:
*Highly recommended- make a text note somewhere on your phone to keep track of what voices are the same as the celebrity voice you hacked in. Download enough voices and you'll find yourself saying "Dammit, was C3P0 the "Gabriela" voice or the "Shahdan" voice?"
*Create a text file somewhere on your phone with the correct SE Context code pre-written into it so you can copy/paste it into any new voice's SE Context Manual entry line(cause that crap's just a pain in the butt to type out on a phone).
*Don't bother screwing with the SE Context of the files BEFORE you copy them into your Waze "sound" folder, because the copy/paste process breaks the changes and you'll just have to do it over again. This one took me a while to figure out.
*I personally never had to reset my phone- I found I could use my new voices immediately.
*Individual mileage may vary, and the folders may not be labeled exactly as written here. Use your imagination, and good luck.
*Don't worry if you change your mind about someday needing some foreign language as originally provided by Waze that you replaced with Morgan Freeman or something. Who knows, you might want to learn Spanish someday! You can always just delete that folder, go back into Waze, and download it as before, and it will start fresh. Just don't forget to back up Morgan...
*You can manipulate these voices in a sound editor and do whatever you want with them as long as the mp3 filenames stay exactly the same as before. If you're a sound geek this can be way fun.
*Anytime a new voice shows up on your phone, copy and paste it over into your personal celebrity voices folder and label its folder so you can identify it easily later on, because they'll just hijack it away from you when its promotional period is over. Just copy them into another foreign language folder as above and it's yours whenever you want.
*I have tried to find all the voices you can download from other websites, but I know there are others out there. I just received and nabbed Santa Claus ("Coca-Cola shill" version) and Liam Neeson (promotion for "The Commuter") on my phone as well. My all-time favorite: T-Pain...
*I am using:

I used your method on a rooted phone (which is not mine!) running Kitkat and it worked like a charm.
My own phone isn't rooted and runs Nougat in which there is no access to Waze files. So, I'm looking for a method to use the voice recording feature in Waze on a rooted phone to use an old voice pack and then share it with my non-rooted phone (take a look at this thread)
Any idea?
P.S:
I'm testing a stupid workaround. I installed Waze in Bluestacks and tried to record prompts one by one using stereo mix. The problem is that there's a weird noise on the recordings in Waze. However, there's no noise when I used a voice recording app (Easy Voice Recorder) in Bluestacks.
Do you have any clue why it is so?

Hmmm... making this work on a non-rooted phone? That's a tricky chestnut to crack. I think I've seen that thread before in my quest to figure this out, but it seems like most of those methods they mention are older pre-Waze update methods that don't take the SE context into account and are thus no longer useful to newer Waze versions...
I don't have time to sink my teeth into it thoroughly at the moment, but my mind immediately goes to ADB (Android Debug Bridge) push/pull. Basically it allows you to poke around and manipulate files in your phone through a terminal interface on your computer using command line prompts. I'm not sure off the top of my head whether you need to be rooted to use ADB as well. Ironically I don't have any non-rooted phones around to test this out on, so I can't help you there without a thorough web search. However, I couldn't find anything on how to change SE context using ADB, and since getting this to work hinges completely on the SE context, the prognosis doesn't look good. Do a search for "all things android se android commands" for now and see what you can find, but when I get some free time I'll poke around and check out what I can discover as far as method goes.
Also FWIW, there are some apps out there that root your phone for a limited time, so you may be able to get that going just long enough to manipulate the files as needed, but you'd have to work fast, and have Root Explorer ready to go. Disclaimer: some of the temp root apps can be adware bombs, so caveat emptor...
As for the weird sound, I'd need to hear it to be sure but I'm thinking it may be the normal "noise floor" problems (electronic interference, background noise, crappy mouthpiece, etc.) that come with recording anything using your phone's built-in microphone/mouthpiece. Is it a buzzing, a hiss, or what? For those reasons I'm not a big fan of the "record your own directions" function on Waze, as the sound quality mostly comes out pretty crappy in the end because of the technical limits of the mouthpiece.

P.S., just realized I didn't know what Bluestacks was until I looked it up- since it's an emulator, you might be getting weird noises because of your COMPUTER'S microphone/ audio input device. What kind of mic do you have?

Thanks for taking the time to answer.
In that Reddit thread, it was suggested to replace a recorded voice files with a celebrity voice pack instead of doing so to a useless foreign voice. I tested that method and it worked and I could hear the prompts while navigating but the share button didn't activate (which means Waze realized I manipulated the files).
If we find a workaround (like changing SE context (which I tried to pull off on these files as well but failed)), then there will be no need to come up with a solution for non-root phones because we can share the celebrity voice as a recorded voice.
P.S: I didn't use any real mic. I used Stereo Mix (aka What You Hear) feature of Windows. I played the celebrity's voice in VLC and started recording in Waze in Bluestacks. So, no extra noise actually adds up to the source sound. But the result in Waze is awful.
It seems there's something wrong with Waze while recording.

The permissions and SE context are correct, but still no sound.

But for me it only works when I choose a language that doesn't contain a _ in the foldername.
Like Croatian, Swedish, Turkish.

Hmmm... I wonder if this is a "my phone/OS only" thing. But this doesn't make sense since the SE context thing is within Root Explorer, not exclusive to my OS. Not quite sure if I've got the free version of Root Explorer (Version 4.1.6) as well, but these options were in my version when I long pressed the files/3-dot menu/Change SE context near the bottom of the drop-down menu. At the time of writing this the free version is up to 4.4.3 FWIW.
Gotta admit I'm flummoxed on this one. There's just too many variables from phone to phone to explore here, but an app is an app - either it has the same menu items on every phone or it's not the same version or app!
Some ideas off the top of my head that may be worth chasing down:
*The free version may not provide the SE context option (to be honest I can't remember whether I am on the free version, or if ages ago I cleverly "got hold" of the paid version if you follow my meaning). Maybe bite the bullet and buy the app (or "get hold" of it somehow)?
*An upgrade to Root Explorer somewhere along the line maybe broke or eliminated this option. This is not out of the question since I read all the time about loyal users *****ing about how their app used to "be perfect" until the latest stupid upgrade changed everything for the worse. I never have this problem since I sideload every app into my phone manually and turn off automatic upgrades on all apps, because I can't stand upgrades breaking and/or ruining perfectly good working apps. Sure, my apps are sometimes a little behind the times, but they freaking work and keep working until I outgrow them or something better comes along. Maybe find version 4.1.6 somehow and see what happens?
Sorry if none of this works and if I can't be of more help than this. Bummed to think only an elite few may be able to do this, because I hate it when software nazis lock up options that allow us users to customize.

I had installed the first "Root Explorer" that was free, but it has different version numbers. Based on your info it looks like the one you have (by Speed Software) call their pro version Root Explorer and their free version simply Explorer. And yes indeedy do you need to the paid version to view/edit root files. I happened to come across the current version and everything you said fell into place.
Even though it was 3:40 am, ran down to my car (3 flights) and was ELATED and did a happy dance when 3PO said "In 0.1 miles turn left master"!
