Clockwork mod help - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Im trying to flash a new rom but when i go to flash clockworkmod recovery nothing happens. i have internet, no error signs pop up all that happens is the bar goes green then stops.
Is there any troubleshooting i can do?

Turn the phone off, and then hold the three volume buttons and the power button. when you get to the recovery screen, select reinstall packages and it will go to an AT&T screen then back to the screen. select it again and then if a green screen pops up, your in clockwork.

I have not flashed clockworks yet though it is not on my phone.
I tried that already. I dont know what to do now

Go to my files on your phone, make sure there is a file called update.zip
Then phone off
Three button combo
Reinstall packages
Repeat
Done

crap, you beat me to it

Reading this forum is really helpful before flashing
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884364
And the file that you need to have on the root of your sd card is the one on clockwork mode renamed as update.zip
Best of lucks

i reinstalled packages and it did not work when i tried to flash

You can always use rom manager
If you are rooted already. You can use rom manager to get into recovery, as follows:
1) Install rom manager from the market
2) Start rom manager and flatsh ClockworkMod recovery, make sure you select "Captivate"
3) After you havedone point 2, select the second option on rom manager "Reboot into recovery".
Reinstall packages two times.
Voila,you are in recovery.

worked beautifully thank you!!

[Q] Htc dream g1 froyo root question

I am a first time rooting. A couple things. First I'm pretty sure I've gotten up to Armon Ra Recovery and just want to know is there any way to check? Also if I've done everything correct then why is the radio update working? I have the file on the sd card root it goes to read it in recovery mode and it says installing cannot find file installation abort. Lastly I just want to make sure I do everything right after those steps because I really don't want to brick my phone.
To check if you have amon RA recovery working, try booting your phone into recovery mode. Power off the phone. Now hold down the Home and Power button until you enter Recovery mode.
For the radio, put it on the root of your SD card, and make sure the file extension is .zip, then enter Recovery mode by powering off the phone and holding down the Home and Power button. Go to "flash zip" and select the radio and proceed to flash it onto your phone.

Can't back up my rom with Clock Works

I go into ClockWorks and try to back up my stock ROM before loading the CW rom. It sends me to the recovery mode screen and just sits on installing CSC (i think that is it)and nothing happens... What am I doing wrong... or how long does it take for it to complete that process??? I checked back in CW and looked for the back up after I clicked reboot in the recovery menu and it is not there.
These are the steps
Dl rom manager
Open app
Flash clockwork
Select captivate
should have an update.zip saved to you're sd
Turn phone off
Vol up and down and power
At&t let go
Recovery
Reinstall packages
Reboots to same screen
Reinstall packages
Green recovery
You can backup from the clockwork menu, or boot up phone and do our through rom manager
Worked like a charm! Thanks a million!

CWM wont boot up. PLEASE HELP ME

ClockworkMod recovery wont boot up AT ALL
It wont let me in my recovery settings.
Pressing the down volume button and the power button gives me the recovery option, but will do the same exact thing.
In fact the second I go to it from ROM manager the screen goes black and then takes me to my HTC screen and just stays there.
I cant even go back to factory settings.
I would like to just restore my origional phone/settings and just forget about this whole flashing rom idea.
PLEASE help me. How do I get to my restore so I can go back to my old settings???

2 options you can try.
1. Copy the ClockworkMod.zip to the root of your SD card and rename it PG32IMG.zip and then boot into HBOOT and let it reinstall CWM.
2. Boot into HBOOT and use the FASTBOOT command to flash the CWM recovery image.
Not sure which one you had used before, but it would be worth trying the other option.

or even easier, install ROM manager from the market and use the one click option install CWM mod from within that.
Thanks...I used Android Flash 1.8 to flash the recovery back on my phone!!! And went from there. Actually the **4EXTRecovery_v2.1.0_RC1_vivo** is better to use for recovery and flashing in my opinion...Thats what I used..
Thanks for the reply guys.

[Q] Trouble w/ Gapps and recovery mode for Cyanogen 7.1

I installed Cyanogen 7.1 following these steps and selected the option to download Gapps:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Captivate:_Full_Update_Guide
I used the ROM Manager method. Everything worked fine until Step 7: "The Samsung Captivate will now reboot into the recovery, wipe data and cache, and then install CyanogenMod. When it's finished installing it will reboot into CyanogenMod."
The phone did reboot into recovery mode but I had to navigate to the .zip file for the install. Cyanogen is now up and running. However, since I manually selected the file, the gapps zip file was not installed along with it. I know where the file is at, but the three button combo to get into recovery mode does not work.
Any suggestions?
long press power button, reboot, recovery, ok?
without working 3 button, you are playing with fate.
buy/make yourself a jig....sounds like you are going to need it one day.
Or go into rom manager and select reboot into recovery.

Yeah, the jig is the plan. I'm not sure why it's not working. It should work in Cyanogen 7 right?
And thanks for the "long press power, reboot to recovery". I didn't know that was an option on Cyanogen.
Now I was able to install the gapps zip and restarted the phone. The apps started installing on reboot but now the main screen says "Problem Loading Widget". Any ideas how to correct this?

[Q] Mmaybe my phone is bricked...help

I rooted my phone with superoneclick, then followed the instructions on one website to install the jelly bean software,Tthe instructions are as follows-
DownloadXWKT7 Adrenaline ROM based Jelly Bean Firmware from here to your computer. After the download completes, connect your phone to the computer and copy the ROM zip file to the root folder on the phone's SD card.
After copying the ROM file, disconnect the phone from the computer and download the ROM Manager app from Google PLAY Store to flash the ClockworkMod (CWM) recovery image.
Once CWM recovery is flashed, choose Reboot into Recovery Mode in the ROM Manager app. Now, boot the phone into recovery mode using a button sequence. Press and hold the Menu Button and then tap the Power button to turn on the device. In case the device accidentally boots into normal mode, you need to repeat the above steps to enter recovery mode.
I did all, as were the instructions, I choose Reboot into Recovery Mode in the ROM Manager app.then, boot the phone into recovery mode using a button sequence. Press and held the Menu Button and then tap the Power button to turn on the device, but the device would not start up again, I even removed the battery and tried charging it, and it still did not work.It does not turn on at all...What can I do to overcome this problem?
Your device is bricked. You should have read the rooting guide before doing that. Never touch rom manager :/
Thank you...How can I overcome this problem?

Samsung service centre. If your device is in warranty, you are lucky. Do *not* tell them about rom manager or rooting. Just tell them that you were updating via kies and after update your device stopped working. If you are out of warranty, you might have to shell out a lot of money.
Thank you for your reply...I still have warranty, I will do as you advice...thanks again....
another head count for rom manager victim huh...
anyway care to give link to the site where u follow the instruction?
clearly the author is an idiot who doesn't even own an ace thus instructing other to use the famously dangeous rom manager.
