Goliath Pro Case for Adam - Adam Accessories

Hey XDA Adam fans I'd like to introduce my work in progress case for the Adam. I'm calling it Goliath Pro, short for Goliath Protection. I just started last weekend after pre-ordering my Adam (wifi+pixelqi) and finding no suitable cases for my requirements (rugged yet stylish).
I've been posting on Notion Addicts but want to get the feedback of the XDA community too. I'm already on version 2 you can see renders at goliathpro site. I'm hoping to get to prototype next week so I can move quick with this (I work for a product design company so I've already got manufacturing connections in China). If you guys have any suggestions or needs you'd like to see implemented let me know and I'll do my best to produce everyone's dream case. It may even end up being two renditions one being the base model and another later thats beefed up to mil-spec. (NIH also has a cool case but we need variety!)
I figure Adam lets you use the tablet comfortably outside with pixelqi so it better be built for it.
All input is appreciated!
(oh, and I've attached an exclusive XDA preview of a new the version 2 color scheme, smoky grey transparent)
*UPDATE: First prototypes arrived today!

Prototype Case!

Looks great! Not sold on the name though. 99.99999% of the time, 'pro' is short for professional and imo, it just sounds strange. That's like calling a product solid-tit where the 'tit' is short for titanium. Makes sense, just isn't a good name. Not that the name actually matters if the case does its job...
Off topic: Did you use Solidworks to draw this up? I'm an ME and I've used Inventor rather extensively but I just got a new job at a startup (I'm the second full-time employee) and I'm going to be using Solidworks for design. Can't wait to get the program in because I'll get a free home license too!

Valid point wynalazca, I guess I like pro 'cuase its what you call your protective gear in rock climbing. Then again you could think of it as a case for professionals or maybe in its final rendition it'll be the full Goliath Protection, we'll see how the logo's look . Yes, solidworks was used to mock up the case, it's a really intuitive program. I'm in the opposite situation, I'd like to try inventor as a lot of people I know use it and love it.

How about a stand build in...somewhere..?
Looks good though.

Looking really good! -CC

nice idea
for sure i will put it on my wish list

Logos and Eco Friendly Materials
Finally, Logos! let me know what you think of these, the top one is the primary logo which i envision embossed on the product somewhere, haven't decided if it should be prominent (like the apple logo on back of iPad) or kinda hidden so you only see it on the inside or something. I guess that will depend on what you guys think. Let me know if you can get down with this or if you hate it, another idea I was playing with was a silhouette of a Goliath beetle from the side. I thought it'd be cool to reference the insects exoskeleton but I put the idea aside for this more clean looking design (if you guys hate this one and want to see the beetle I'll revive it!)
*logo attached below
I got an email requesting Goliath be made from eco-friendly materials, such as recycled plastics etc. I would love to do this but fear that recycled plastics would shorten the lifespan and quality of the product. From my experience recycled plastics tend to break/fracture much more quickly than virgin material. If anyone knows otherwise and has eco-material suggestions I'd be happy to take them. I've seen a lot of requests for a leather case, so maybe I'll have to do a recycled leather case to compliment this one.
Again, thanks for all the feedback, it's awesome how Adam fans like to get involved!

Reminds me of aftermarket car mods for some reason, which isn't a positive or negative ...
Let's see the beetle, the idea intrigues me.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App

On another note, if you designed the connections right I don't think the brittleness of recycled plastics would be much of an issue. There really isn't much stress placed upon these covers unless they arent tight to the device body or (obviously) dropped.
Any possibility of a bidirectional kickstand?

Sorry to stay off topic, but after going through a hands on course from one of the sales people, Solidworks is a much better program to use. I'm not sure if it was just the computer I had, but Inventor seemed a little buggy and crashed all the time on me.
Also, I'm really digging the logos. If the price is reasonable, I'm definitely interested in purchasing!

Hey XDA, so last Monday my server got hacked and it screwed up my entire weeks schedule. I learned some lessons, i.e. never host all your work critical websites on one server. Luckily no damage was really done and I learned a lot about what I need to do in the future to be more careful. Monday was going to be dedicated to version 2 modeling and updates but since that day was completely occupied by damage control I've had to fit in the modeling after hours and this weekend. Luckily our manufacturer was able to get me estimates and timetables for prototyping and first production, so all was not lost. I hope to have some prototypes by end of next week so we can all have something real to look at, not just renders.
football0552: thanks for the heads up, I'm considering using living hinges to create the integrated stand while keeping everything flush. Do you know about recycled plastics in this application? I know virgin material can be flexed over a million times. Bidirectional Kickstand is in the works, I have several solutions, working on a final to patent before releasing images.

That looks great, hope your planning on shipping international!!!
One question / idea are you planing a cover / folio case to protect the screen.
I fly in helicopters occasionally and the luggage gets tossed about a bit so I am needing some protection for the screen too.
Cant wait to see the real deal.

To answer your question about recycled plastics and living hinges-- No, I don't. I could do some research if needed, but off the top of my head I don't know.

I like the Icon only as well as the Horizontal format. Torn, as either one would be nice.

living hinge
Hey, maybe you could do something like a snap version of a livinge hinge; at the top and sides. Disconnect the snaps you're not using and flip the cover open to either a portrait or landscape kickstand. My concern is for the longevity of a living hinge...

it could die... (sorry, couldn't resist).

I saw a funny engineering post called Night of the Living Hinge. Anyways, got updates!
It's been a hectic couple of weeks but finally I'm ready to share pre-production renders. We've patented design in China and US, as well as trademarked our name so without further delay. Here are the updates:
1. Ruggedized re-design brings a better grip on the second skin as well as increasing impact resistance.
2. Screen Protector with design features that direct screen impact to the outside of the case not the screen.
3. Micro SD card slots to store 3 extra MicroSD cards
4. Integrated kickstand
5. fully accessible ports when open, fully protected ports when closed
6. Sliding Camera cover protects the lens when closed, allows full use when slid open.

The site is goliathpro.com and the cost we're shooting for is estimated around USD$20 for the Second Skin and USD$50 for the Full Protection. These estimates aren't solid yet tho as we have yet to finalize our manufacturing partner.

Build your own case for the nexus7, choose the colours etc.. amazing....
oh, and every case is built with a magnet in the lid for smart screen!
I went all black with Manhattan Blue line colour... looks very nexus7
Yeah, we have discussed this case in several other threads.
I went with the Red + white elastic and purple cloth interior
+1 I spoke with them since Sunday regards to the kinetic clip/stand and smart cover which will be included. A bit pricey but I think worth the pennies I earn to have a unique, one-of-a-kind case (well to me lol).

Man you're advertising this everywhere lol. I preordered mine a few days ago. Can't wait.
Black outside, natural wood, yellow cloth inside and kinetic latch!!
Can't wait. I asked how long it'll take she said ships july 30, probably take 2 days to get to Cali.
It does definitely looks nice. I think I will order one for my nexus 7. Black covering, ebony wood trim, gray lining with a white elastic band closure strap.
just ordered mine. black exterior, ebony wood, apocalypse blue inside and kinect latch
Ooo i don't know, it looks great but also looks like a lot of extra bulk
Mad Midnight case, Ebony Frame, Knight Gray Cloth, and Black elastic.
I thought about the kinetic latch but with all the other tablets I have had, the cases that stand up were never really used.
Man, I am really tempted. Bit pricey, but I love the moleskin style and these seem like top quality. Hmm ....

Yeah I figure this is my "warranty" seems pretty protective and it looks really nice. Their customer service seems really good too, received a email reply the next day and they are active on their G+ and Twitter.
Edit: From their G+ in response to a question about the speaker and mics
"
We're so glad someone asked this, because we put a lot of R&D into it. We will be posting updated photos of the Nexus 7 case design very soon.
The speaker aligns with the bottom ledge of the frame, which helps direct the sound toward the user through the bottom port. It actually sounds better in the frame than when it's sitting on its own.
Regarding the mics, this really has to do with how we engineer our frames from the beginning. The rubber corners and accents allow for airspace around the device itself where the mics are located. This airspace is exposed to the wood, which helps capture sound.
"
They answered my query regarding magnetic lid very fast as well, wanted to make sure it was include regardless of latch/elastic strap, it is.
I did a bit of research about them and the general feel was bad quality for their ipad cases, but that was a few years ago. People had issue with the corners being quite blocky and the ipads falling out, but looking at the images online and on their facebook it seems a lot has changed since then
I did some research before making my order and I couldn't find anything from 2012 it seems. Which I think is ok since most posts are usually complaints. Some things I found were about shipping delays which I think they have fixed. But I did find posts where they did try to fix issues and I think they have been redesigning to make sure any past issues have been addressed.
Those do look like excellent cases, but man, $50 for a case for a tablet that cost $250. I'll have to ponder this one a bit.
Saw some of the shipping mentions too, but as stated they were older. I will be having to exchange my device in the near future, so really considering it ... this is where I'd like to see some user feedback / photos.

I couldn't bring myself to spend this much on a case, especially when I'm holding out for the docks to be released. I would dislike taking it out of the case to put it on the dock, as well as the added thickness and weight.
I hope i don't break my nexus 7 before the case comes..

I'm seriously considering pulling the trigger on an epic black exterior, ebony wood, Old World Atlas interior print, and a Kinetic latch. Damned nice looking, even for the quoted 64.95.
i've found the same as everyone above. I would like to mention there are quite a few similar cases to this, not sure how many are making nexus 7 cases, but I did just email pen and quill. I also saw beaconcase.com and portenzo, but they are all about $50-$60....i'd go as high as $40 I think, but 50 and 60 is really getting up there, it would have to be a really good quality for me to pay 1/5 of the price of the tablet.....
Update from Portenzo:
We are so thankful to have customers who demand a well thought out, high quality product over instant gratification. We are looking into it. Stay tuned to our Facebook page for updates.
Thanks!
Lea

OFF TOPIC:
You talk about price, now I have started using vaja cases from my days of the PDA Sony Clie days and I still have this case this very day. Argentinian leather and top notch craftsmanship for protection. Its EXPENSIVE, but the leather and product I can def vouch for. They take about 3-4 weeks for custom orders which is awesome IMO and coming from Argentina, is pretty cool. Here's a pic below of an example of what they can do. I have posted a question on their G+ account about making cases for us. (well more begging lol).
This is an example of one of their more expensive cases for the ipad2. I personally don't like the texture and I am not a pink/fusia person, but some do (reminds me of the Soul headphone pads in the Ludicrous lines lol)

The Good:
- Made Entirely from Recycled Materials
- Totally customizable
- Holds case firmly
- Elastic Strap holds firm
- Internal pocket for storage
- Buttons mostly accessible
The Bad:
- Made Entirely from Recycled Materials
- Adds a surprising bit of bulk (far less than the Blurex, but more than the Belkin)
- The Design Process vs. final product (more on that in a bit)
- Not a smart cover
The Unknown:
- Durability
Review:
I love the XDA forums around the time of a device launch. Yeah, you get an influx of short term users and forum complaints, but the place overall reflects the unadulterated joy of geek-fanboy-ism in a primarily positive way. Moreso than most of the internet.
As we all watched accessories roll in, I decided this would be the "pricier" case I decided to take the plunge on in hopes it would be my "final" case. I am an obsessive customizer/tinkerer, so it was a pretty easy decision. I decided on a pretty simple design that I thought would compliment my overall device theme (at least for the time being).
This is largely where my biggest complaint comes in, which I think is demonstrated by the screenshot below:
It is important to note that I chose to have the order altered to incorporate the black strap (as opposed to the white), however the overall base color is simply not similar. I didn't agonize over the design, and used stock background as opposed to a provided image file, so I definitely did not take full advantage of the customization - but still feel the colors don't match up particularly well.
That said, the print is high quality (especially given that all the imagery I provided had a fair degree of transparency to it, I wasn't sure it would turn out the greatest), the sturdy feeling recycled neoprene has a nice worn texture to it, and in general I still think it is an incredibly attractive case.
The fill seems to be some sort of either recycled cardboard, pressboard, or plastic. It does flex easily, but doesn't feel bent easily (if that makes sense). Overall, this is an area where only time will tell, but I'd say I'm leaning on the optimistic side. It certainly does not feel as though it's about to fall apart, and the stitching on the neoprene is absolutely top of the line. Incredibly well done.
The lack of smart cover functionality is a bit disappointing, however, I had no expectation it would have one when I ordered it. There was no mention of it on the site, anywhere, and I did not choose to clarify. I had purchased the Blurex smart case immediately on ordering my N7, and when I ordered this case decided if necessary, I would do a bit of surgery with an exacto knife to extract the magnet. I will update this thread with my success to this end, but it is certainly encouraging to have the pocket sewn inside already, as I'm fairly certain it will be simple to stitch the magnet into this case.
tl;dr aka Final Thoughts:
At $40, this was not necessarily a cheap case, but in my opinion very reasonably priced. Turnaround time was definitely satisfactory, and my interactions with their customer service department were very prompt and courteous. It holds very comfortably in the hand.
While it would be foolish to estimate how it will wear over time, I feel like it's going to hold up just fine for my use.
Looks nice! For $40 that didn't sport a smart cover/magnet option....kinda suXors IMO
But I do like the look and it doesn't look very bulky at all. I'd be on the fence on this one but because of the lack of the smart cover, that would be a pass on my book. But I know some who don't like the smart cover option, this may appeal to them.

In reality, it's not that bulky - I just feel like adding any bulk to sleeker devices like this kind of ruins the form factor - so it's not just this case, I struggle with almost all of them.
The smart cover will likely be a deal breaker for a lot of people. My advice to anyone considering ordering one of these is simply to contact them and see if they have any plans on implementing the magnet in future designs. They replied to my email within 24 hours, were very courteous, and I imagine it's something they more than likely do plan on implementing. I'm just an early adopter
And I don't mind hacking my own together. We've got a sewing machine, fabric, and a magnet already - why not?
If you want a smart cover, just download an app to do the job.

True, that's an option, but I prefer the reliability of a hardware solution, particularly when I already have the hardware.
I know someone who used to work at Caseable. I got a free custom Touchpad case (technically iPad case, but it fits the same) because of it. Never used it though. As much as I liked my custom design, it wasn't really a 'case'. Just a book-like cover, and a strap in each corner to secure it. I'd rather have something that snaps onto the back of the device like most cases.
I am waiting for mine to arrive, I thought the corners were rounded? It looks nothing like in the pictures on their site!

Yeah it does there... When I ordered mine there were different pictures in that spot, showing a blue and orange one, as well as the pink colorful one I ordered, and those looked narrower across and with more rounded corners, the way it does in the image where you choose the pattern. I still can't wait to get mine though, I'm sure ill still like it (and will add my own magnet of course)

Definitely a bit different, and way different than the design app makes it look for sure.
On playing with it throughout the day, though, I definitely think I am pretty happy. My gripes are largely superficial to this point.

[Review] TreeGloo Case for Nexus 7

EDIT: 9/20/12 Taken from the other Treegloo thread:
Just to report back. I think I was one of the few that had received their cases the first week of release. In any case, I have dropped my N7 twice. Once on the curb getting my 4 yr old out of my truck and yesterday in the garage from a 3-4 foot drop straight to the garage floor with the flat back hitting the ground
I picked it up, and nothing was damaged (thank the heavens!) and I just left it for my wife to use and I went to work. When I got home from work, I opened up the tablet and found that the tablet was not seating correctly on the case. I thought to myself, "crap something is wrong" so I took the N7 out of the case. What I found was that the back case had popped open when it hit the floor in the garage. I initially didn't catch it, but all I did was pop the case back into the bezel. (whew)
So I have to say it was a good day for the Treegloo case lol. I don't think it would have of survived a fall like that without certain issues if I was using a leather case. But that's just speculation .
EDIT 8/10/12: Update on my case. While talking with treegloo.com through G+, it was pointed out to me that I have a cloth lining not a paper lining, which is the default. The reason is because not many people order the green liner. I am weird like that lol. So kudos to treegloo once again for a FREEBIE!
Still loving the case. I can carry my N7 with the utmost confidence anywhere I go!
The issue well not issue, more of a FYI to treegloo, that I have an imprint of the inner lining on the lower left corner of the screen protector. This doesn't affect the tablet at all, just a FYI if someone does have a screen protector on and if you see something like this.

Ok here is my quick take of the Treegloo cases which you can make your own at https://www.treegloo.com/
As you can see the case is wrapped with care and with a quick personal thank you, which is nice because you really do not see this type of service. I chalk it up to being in Texas, but I guess I am bias because I am in TX (grew up in NY) and with all the 'southern' hospitality it didn't totally surprise me .
And before I go into some of the aspects of the case, I have to say they have been above and beyond the scope of service in terms of this case. I mean their bread and butter is most likely the ipad lines, but at this point they catered to many of our needs, which is awesome in my book, and they are in the US to boot. And in addition, I know of another member who chose the kinetic latch systems as well that received a Fedex'd replacement latch in case the one installed was the incorrect one. I replaced it on mine and kept the old one in case I needed another as a backup. :good:
Crack open the plastic packing and you can still smell the dyes and glue from the case
Ok before I stuck my precious N7 into the case, I took a look around and looked at the suede lining (which is an 'extra' option I paid for) that would protect this beast. I looked at the Kinetic Latch system (also extra) to see how it worked. It's a very novel idea. Having multiple angles on this thing. It's really well thought out!
Now putting in the N7 is very interesting. You have instructions enclosed to push in from top first and then follow up with the bottom of the device and push down firmly. After that I can confidently attest that this tablet will not be coming out easily. So I was curious, how hard is it to take out? Apparently not too difficult at all. It's like taking off a TPU case off a phone. No biggie.
All the buttons are easily accessible. People with bigger fingers may find it a bit difficult to access, but users may vary here. :silly:
Now looking at the bottom part of the device you see the cut out of the frame and the reason's are pretty self explanatory. The bottom port portion is quite large because of the speaker and of course the headphone port is carved out perfectly as well...well almost perfectly. The only headphones plug that did not work well was my Shure SE215. The reason is because the 3.5mm plug has a big head to that and any twist will disconnect the SE215's. But all the other headsets like the earphones from a Beats Rezound and also my Sol Republic Track HD headphones work here as well. Again users may vary on this one.
The smart cover works as advertised. No worry about that there. And folding the cover back does NOT affect the screen at all. I tried .
Any negatives? Kinda. Other than the stated access to the buttons if you have bigger fingers may drive you nuts. Also the case yet small and like a small paperback, does take away from the sexy thin Nexus 7 original nekkid form. Too bad there's no bikini case out there :silly:.
So do I recommend this case? A resounding yes! If you are looking for a case that will protect your precious N7 this will do it's job well. The wood is buttery smooth and the case holds the baby in nice and tight. The wood is smooth as butter and the materials used is perfect in my opinion.
And on an off note, I was asked recently if the case affected my wifi. And I have not noticed anything degradation in signal. All my pages and play store pull up as quick as without the case.
Anyway, here are the pics. Pretty much an unboxing photo journal lol. Questions?? Sure whatcha got?
This is not my pic, this is from treegloo. I didn't take a pic of this angle, so I figured I take it from the site. Reason? Because I forgot
What about the two mics? Are there holes cut out for them? If not, do they still work fine?
I have been debating on one of these for a while now. After reading about several bad experiences I thought I'd forego this type of case, but I can't find anything I really like. Maybe I will take a leap and try it out. Thanks for the review.

No I meant that because if there is not lining, there will be no obvious cut outs. There would be rubber bumpers at the corners from what I understand.

Give me a test and I'll test it. I already did a few google searches via voice search and it came up fine. Asked to play music two different albums and also asked for the weather without issues.
Welp, this will make the fourth case I've purchased now. Just ordered one.

Thanks for the review Jimmy. Can't wait to get mine. Ordered it on the 28th and still waiting for the shipping confirmation email.
My order:
Ebony frame, Manhattan Blue Cloth liner, and a Kinetic Latch closure

I highly suggest emailing them or post on their G+ page. My last email was quickly responded by Jen within the hour on a business day.:good:
And as for the 'bashing' thread. I posted there as well and posted my opinion on the guy. I don't think he responded. . I'll let that thread die. It was a complaint on his personal experience, where I do not fault him, but a newbie badmouthing a company just on his/her/it experience rubs me the wrong way. I mean there was no defending treegloo in his/her/its eyes.

Oh I already know they're quick to respond. Jen answered a question within 30 minutes before I made the purchase. My order is still within the 5-10 business day window so I don't need to pester them yet.

Ah ok. Cool. For the "basic" cases like mine with a few add-ons, you should be fine. But if you had added ALL of that fun stuff, that's where they have to do some quality control stuff because that is indeed an "one-off", unique case :cyclops:.
The case looks really good. I ended up with a Portenzo case because it was a little cheaper and had more appealing colors but I really prefer teh TreeGloo's wood frame. I'm glad that you are happy with your case!

These are so beautiful... I'm just apprehensive about the cases breaking after a year of use (reported from them iPadders).

Which one? The slim-folio or the thicker ones? Just took a look... neither their price nor that of the EXOTEKs are too bad to get while waiting for an order from Treegloo...

Has anyone tried this specific "smart cover" case?

I looked around for smart covers on ebay and found the cover below. It doesn't fold around like this case does and in general looks more stable judging by the pictures (they could be wrong though).
Have any of you tried it? I have not found a review of it yet but I figured it might be worth asking.

Good question. I've been thinking about getting this case too. Anyone actually got it?
Looks cool, but it would have to be much more stable than it looks to me.

Yes I have this case, I tell you its a beautiful case to hold and look at. There are other colour variants available which I got the red one.
Its very sleek, doesn't add much weight or bulk to the device.
The sleep functions works brilliantly, and doesn't lock the device when you fold it over to hold like a book, which some do.
ONE DOWNSIDE!!!! - The stand is very hard to figure out (i have not yet figured how to fold it to make it stand up haha !)
Hope this helps answer your questions.
And I genuinly recommend this case as its ace ! (that rhymes weee)

Have you got a link for any of the other colours? The ones I see in multiple colours are the ones with the wrap-around magnetic closure in the back (which I have, I'd like to have one that just lies over the screen for use at home).

You're right mate, asif
Yeah the coloured variants have a lip that does go round the back, but its not noticeable and surely you want this to keep it nicely closed and secure?

I think it's noticeable, especially when I have that extra flap to fold back over when I'm using the N7 in my hand.
I want to keep it closed and secure, sure, when it's in a bag or something. But my N7 spends most of its time on my coffee table or bar; I'd love to have a slim case with just a flap over the screen to keep the dust out. That doesn't cost $30+ like the Poetics or Portenzos of the world.

So do you have this exact case or not? I've seen the other ones and I'm not interested in them after reading the reviews. That's why I started a new thread about this one. If you do have this one, some pictures would be great.
I went and ordered one of these, but likely won't have it for a couple of weeks since it's coming from China. Will post my impressions when it arrives.

That's a different case, with the wrap-around flap on the right side. I already have that one.
look, heres the deal, that case may look pretty but any case like that wont stay closed. for it to be closed, there would have to be magnets along the edges like the portfolio. any case maker that says the case will stay closed without magnets on the border is lying.
I own one and its awesome. Buy it.

I have got 1, build quality feels nice and it doesn't add much bulk to the device and also looks pretty sweet.

I have to admit, I never really liked these cases... but after seeing that YouTube review online, I'm curious enough to give it a shot.
I'm absolutely in love with this Speck case, but I do have a minor concern with it. I use my Nexus 7 frequently, very frequently, and not only that but I use it for work. I'm continually walking up and down the hall at work going from one problem to another, using my N7 along the way. As a result, I'm concerned I may wear out the clip on the Speck case quite a bit. This only became a thought when I realized the clipping mechanism is significantly easier now than it was when I bought it. Broken in? Maybe. Will it get even softer? Very possible. This case ensures that won't happen since the magnets of course don't have physical contact to wear like that. While the higher stand up position seems a bit easy to topple over, the other one with the N7 (one I'd likely prefer anyway) looks a bit better in terms of stability.
At any rate, ah, I bought one just now - we'll see what happens when it gets here.
Edit - for what it's worth the one I ordered did indeed have the magnetic flap that goes around back to ensure it stays shut. I'm not sure I'd consider one without...
Case arrived today, so far I like it, the cover lies flatter than the eBay case with the extra flap, and it feels slimmer. Only downside so far is that it sometimes puts the tablet to sleep when I fold it back. We'll see if it gets better over time. I'll try to take pictures when I have a chance.

maybe slip something to block the magnet on the back? not sure what can maybe help on that front, but maybe a little thickness might be enough.
Side note, anyone have this and the poetic slimline case? I got the first case they had for my uncle, but it's a bit difficult for him to open. I'd get him a portenzo like mine, but it might actually add more bulk than I'd want for him.

Nice. I always wanted something like this but with a flap for the front.
I want more reassurance that the magnets will have no ill effects. Otherwise an awesome idea.

We researched extensively in magnets (magnet size, thickness, pull force, finish, vendors, performance relationship affected by distance) and optimized the best magnets to achieve the performance that we required. We've tested our Nexus 7 tablets extensively with various magnets in the prototype cases for almost three months, and have definitely concluded that there are no adverse side-effects.

Encouraging.
Is that stand a separated piece?... (Never mind... I just saw the video) I like the case, but I'd want a built-in kickstand... Very promising minimalistic approach. I'd be happy with a skeleton case like the one shown with a built-in kickstand and separated invisible screen shield.
EDIT: Short of having a built-in plastic kickstand... can a separated (detachable) stand be made mostly of plastic with metal where it needs to be attached to the back of the case. Also if the stand was fold-able or made with a hinge so that it can be easily placed in a pocket or attached magnetically (flat) to the back of the case.

There is absolutely NO components inside the Nexus that could be affected, other than the compass chip, which in itself is non-ferrous, so it won't be damaged even by the most powerfull magnet you could come up with. The only ferrous parts in the Nexus is the shielding cans and the mounts for the USB connector.
So you can place whatever magnets on the Nexus without any chance of damage.

I agree. I ended up going with something that protects a bit better. Cool idea, and I probably would have bought one. Maybe someday they will get the startup.
Make something similar with a flap for the front so you can use wake on open. This design failed because it didnt have that.

And a couple posts back someone basically said the deal breaker for them was no built in kickstand. There is no one reason it failed other than we didn't help enough with the startup.
We all have our own reasons we didn't give them money to help them start this up. I wonder how far they were from getting off the ground?

Hi, one of the founders of Less Case.
Hey guys. Just googling about the less case and saw this thread come up . Longtime lurker, first time poster (android user since the G1 days).
The project moving forward was contingent upon the kickstarter campaign succeeding (obviously), so unfortunately we're not pursuing this product anymore.
Just to talk about some of the things being brought up in this thread...
Me and my 2 buddies that were making this really debated about the kickstand integration. There were many reasons why we decided to leave it out of the design, at least for the "version 1". Primarily, the case was initially designed to be as thin but durable as possible. Adding a kickstand to the Less case would have required considerable amount of redesign and re-prototyping. I know it sounds trivial "just add a kickstand"....Problem was, if it was plastic, we'd have to add extra thickness to the entire case to make the rest of it uniform thickness to where the stand folded back into the case. We could solve the rigidity issue of the kickstand by making it metal, but then our manufacturer was solely a plastics maker, and the logistics of sourcing a metal manufacturer, then adding post assembly would have taken it to a cost and timeline we weren't comfortable with. I'm sure we could have come up with the solution, but it was a matter of time and money management.
At the end of the day, the primary idea was to be able to slap this thing on any metal surface, so the ROI of adding a kickstand didn't add up. Double the project time, more cost, to accommodate what's essentially a "secondary" feature. I know a lot of people would disagree, but we had to weigh the pros and cons, and it just eeked towards "no kickstand" a bit more.
Also, for those talking about a cover, we had that planned. It was contingent upon the success of the initial case, and Kickstarter doesn't allow us to show anything that hasn't been already made. So we couldn't include the idea in our campaign. For me, the cover we had planned was the best part, so it was unfortunate we couldn't share it to potential kickstarters.
Here's some early mockups we did of how the cover would work...
(See attachments) If thats not working, just go to lesscase.com/pics and click on the files. Can't post images yet
Basically the thin plastic arm would connect magnetically to the back, and since the Nexus 7 is primarily a "portrait" device, we figured it would be good to have the cover be vertical, almost like a journalists notepad (which by the way we were going to make it look like that, kind of retro'ish). The plan was to input weak flat magnets inside the cover to activate the Nexus 7 sleep/wake functions which we tested, and worked.
The beauty of the case was that it's just like the iPad case, in the sense that it can stay on all day when you need it, but if you want to use the tablet sans-cover, you can easily snap it on and off w/ magnets. The fact that you could do this allowed you to re-purpose the tablet quickly and easily depending on how you wanted to use it. Take the case off, then car mount it, put the case back on, etc.
Anyways... it was fun to work on while it lasted. We had big plans, but they didn't flesh out . Thanks for the conversation!
Welcome to the forum, wussyib, and thanks for sharing some insider's info.
A real shame the campaign didn't succeed.
