Simple App to change icons on your Android Phone - Captivate Themes and Apps

All,
Please do take a look at this... Awesomeness ... Thank you Whiskeybro!!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=890876

I've seen that before and maybe I'm just not understanding what it does but it seems like extra work when you can just drag and drop the icons in the first place. Maybe I haven't looked at it hard enough.

Help with making a custom lockscreen

I usually make a custom wallpaper for my lockscreen or homescreen everytime I switch a rom but so far they are pretty elementary mostly because I have no idea what the hell I am doing lol. I am on a mac so I am working in GIMP but I have a few things I cant figure out. I am uploading a picture of what I have so far. I would like the black areas around the pictures to be semi-transparent and the edges of the pictures themselves to be rounded slightly to give it a smoother feel. I will upload the individual pictures also. I would much rather learn to do it myself but I understand if for whatever reason no one wants to show me. Believe me its not the end of the world. Just something I like to have so when I pull my phone out at work I can see my family. That is me, my wife, and daughter,by the way. ....oh I also wanted a small slightly-less transparent box around the time and smaller but proportional boxes around the sprint and date. I know its alot but I got this image in my head of the perfect lockscreen and not a clue on how to get it to the phone lol.
oh and the reason I posted this in CDMA and not themes and applications was because I wasnt sure if to get the transparency it would have to be update.zip style and I wasnt sure if it made a difference if the phone it was being flashed on was CDMA or GSM. Oh and I am on modaco 2.0
I've got the photo shop experience for this, but I can't seem to find the images in com.htc.resources.apk or lockscreen.apk that need to be edited. If you can point out which images control the lock screen, I will help you with this.
I'll write a quick how to later when I have a linux box/gimp at my hands.
I was just looking into this myself. I know that any overlays are a file known as lockscreen.topedge. I am not good with Photo shop so I havent tried but I downloaded a lockscreen and extracted the .apk and found that image to be the overlay. You could create a picture and use the wand function to single out the background, add transparency to it. I wish i had to the time to mess around with it but work isnt the place unfortunately.

I wish work wasn't the place for this kind of stuff
Well it would be if i owned a laptop. Lol Hopefully I can dig in tonight or tomorrow and see what I can do.
The 1st part of what u need I can probably help with, u want the black background semi transparent and the pictures of you and your family rounded a bit correct? That's what I understood from there. The second part I'm not so sure of still
I see in gimp that there is a menu layer ->transparency but I cant see how to make certain regions transparent and if I try to make the whole image semi transparent I do not know how to preserve that transparency through saving, transferring and applying the image to the phone. I figured it would be better off as an overlay as NOJs lockscreens are but I am unexperienced in update.zip and how to sign and package them. I could push them via adb but I am not sure where to push overlay images to the lockscreen. Thanks for all of the help yall are giving me I really appreciate it. This stuff can get frustrating nice to have helpful people in the community.
I am not sure if you are willing to pay a few bucks for it, but i know that Noj is taking requests for custom locksreens for a small donation.
You can find Noj's custom lockscreen request @ Flipz's GeekFor.Me HERE
p.s. I would love to see someone write a quick tutorial on which files need to be edited to make our own lockscreens.
Im really hoping to learn how to do it myself I'll go broke as much as I change the pictures on my lockscreen(about twice a week) lol
The reason you are having issues is due to you probably not following a correct workpath in PShop/GIMP. Use layers/masks/etc.
really he would make u pay money for a little project -___-, well since i dont work today let me take a shot @ this, ill post up what i done later

I stumbled coincidentally in this thread. I wrote a tut for Desire HD recently, since this mod is one of the easiest around anyway. This should answer all your questions.

[REQ] Black Notification Bar for eclairOG rom

I was just wondering if any themer out there could make a simple black bar for eclairOG v1.11(preferrably somewhat glossy) with a round battery icon (used in MAT-Theme, I believe its made by kspec?)
A lot of people have been asking for a black bar in the thread so I figured id try to get a themer's attention. Thank you!
To make things easier for the theme devs heres the link to the ROM
EclairOG:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=620673
and this is the theme that contains the notification bar and battery icon, id like. Thanks!

heres a screenshot of it:
OOhhh yes...Desperatly waiting for this
i am too, I really want it. i have really basic knowledge about theming, ive been trying to get it done myself, but all i get are bootloops...lol
I really hope someone does this haha. or a full sense/hero theme for eclair

Id be happy enough with just the black bar. I managed to modify the framework-res.apk a lil bit but all it flashed was the battery, pulldown menu and the lil network icons, but the bar still comes up white even though i used the black images from the MAT theme, eclair is so much different than donut when it comes to theming, im not asking for much, just the black bar so hopefully someone will do it, because a ton of people are asking for it on the ROMs thread.

yaa i assume it will come sooner or later, hopefully sooner.
In my opinion, i bet bbuchacher will be the first to port one to his eclair ROM, since he did so with his Super D roms

I haven't tested it. I really don't feel like spending the 30 minutes or so to set my unused G1(s) up to test it out, so nandroid before trying it.
It has the pull down, notification bar icons, and status bar from the MAT theme (all credit to the creators of the images used).
http://android-theme-minus.googlecode.com/files/simple_black_bar.zip
There are the images I used for it along with the steps I used for colorChangev3.jar based on what the images looked like.
You have to change statusbar_background.png to statusbar_background.9.png for the status bar to show up black.

you sir, are EPIC! thank you so much for taking the time to make this! I flashed it, only the text turns white, but i found out why. In 2.1 roms, the system icons are no longer located in drawable. theyve been moved to drawable-mdpi. so i think if i move your images to mdpi itll work. ah, i didnt realize that statusbar_background had to be converted to a 9.png. Thanks this has been a great learning experience for me. Ive been fumbling around with the files and images all day and all of last night trying to get it to work. I think i can fix it myself. when I do finish, ill post it here and credit you and the original themer for MAT. Thank you very very much!

[BlackBar Mod - eclairOG1.0-1.2]
I DO NOT take any credit for this.
The notification bar is from MAT Theme made by matata86
and was ported over to eclairOG by david1171
UPDATED!!!! - I found some files that were in the wrong folder, and 3 images that were missing. I moved and restored the proper files into the right places. GTalk no longer force closes, no slowdown, nothing. Everything should run fine now!
Screenshots:
Installation:
-Make sure you have no widgets on any of your home screens before flashing
-Boot into Recovery and flash normally as you would any other theme
-No Need to Wipe anything (If you really really wanna be safe, wipe dalvik, but you shouldnt need to)
DOWNLOAD HERE!!!
Oh, and i might make a couple more versions and use battery icons from other themes on xda. Thanks again david1171 for porting the black bar to eclairOG!
Nice work.
love that battery icon...
Just flashed it and running good so far
EDIT: Got the feeling, that it slows down the phone a bit...
Does your Beautiful weather widget has a transparent background?

no its just the normal semi transparent gradient black background, but because theres a black wallpaper behind it, it looks almost invisible.
@Che: are you sure its slowing down? My phone is still super fast, i havent noticed any slowdown at all...
for some reason when I install the notification bar I get a force close when I open a chat on gtalk

Oh well, I was going to PM you for it. I think I know how to make it transparent, but I think the application needs to be resigned after replacing PNGs coz it didn't install. I tried signing made easy, but couldn't figure out how to make update-script.

yeah it needs to be resigned. I use stericsons autosign.bat file.
Check out the zip file i attached and look in META-INF < com < google < android < update-script and open it with Wordpad and you should get an idea of those work. theyre very simple. im not at my comp right now so i cant explain much about them right now.
and to anyone having problems with the black bar, ill see if i can find anything wrong with it and fix it.

[Q] Help create a Steampunk theme...?

Ok folks, my friend just got a hero and we were talking about why to root. I showed him several ROMs from this site and all the cool themes. We got to talking about how cool it would be if there was a STEAMPUNK themed ROM out there.
Here's the rub... I SUCK at theming.
I looked at the "buufed" rom and I like some of the style, but it's just not quite what I'm looking for. Props to the developer of that ROM because it's very thorough. This is the depth I'd like the Steampunk theme to have, but I just don't know how to do it. I've never built a ROM from the ground up, so I don't even know where to start.
Is anyone out there interested in a project like this, or could someone help me know what to do?
Thanks!
-mb
+1
A steam punk theme would be pretty awesome
It has begun...
Ok... I have a great deal of respect for all you devs and themers out there. This is a beast. Time-consuming and not very forgiving...
I have started working on my steampunk theme. Here are some screenshots of what I've done so far. By no means is this a complete theme. I am using ZenHeroFX 2.0 by nfinitefx45 as my base. Credit to all artists/devs for their work.
I have themed the notification pull-down as well, but I don't have a screenie of that yet. Also, I themed the stock sense rosie, but (again) no screencap yet. I'm curious what y'all think...

Looks cool so far.
Wow. You're a fast learner! Here are some clear notification bar icons that I made. You can use them so that the black squares wont show up around the icons in the notification bar. Just unzip the zip file, and you'll see the folders that the icons are supposed to go into. Good luck!

This is looking really good. Here's another theme I found a while back that has some of the same elements of csrom and your current build. I've never used it, but maybe something in there will help you, or maybe this dev can help you.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=478570
wow! this looks ... awesome! not usually an "extreme theme" kinda guy, but this I would use!
sadly though, I am using CM6 or AOSP, so would not actually end up using it, but I will be watching this thread for S&Gs anyway. the end result should look spectacular.
if I could add one "suggestion"? Get rid of the "branding" (SteamMod in big letters on the lockscreen?), I would think ppl would rather have something less intrusive in the look. I know I would. something clean and mechanical. just a IMHO kinda suggestion, great work regardless!

No problem-o... I appreciate the suggestion. Funny thing, too... I was using some of the mods from this on my daily use, and I thought "I need to take off that lettering 'cuz it's getting on my nerves." I'm just going to use it as the splash screen when sense loads rather than on the lock screen.
I have to take a break from this for a couple of days, but hopefully I can work on it some next week. Here's where I'm going to have most of my problems... DISTRIBUTION. I can theme my own phone b/c I know what I'm editing... I just am not sure how to make it so others can use it without bricking their phone. Any ideas? I hate Metamorph... was thinking more of a flashable zip? Or maybe just a themed version of a full ROM? ??

I may be way off, but I'm a Hero user and digital scrap "designer". I have photographed and extracted some Steampunk watch parts that you are welcome to use if you like for your theme.

The DL links are right below the pics for each post. Again, if I'm way off and you think my stuff sucks, disregard this post!
I love your theme btw!

Justice League of America Icons

So, I have had an awful lot of free time on my hands after getting laid off last week. Thought I would play around with GIMP a little more and custom make some icons. I made these for Folder Organizer icons, but they are 72 x 72 px and can be used for whatever devices support that size icon (I believe HDPI devices only, please correct me if I am wrong). I attached a little pic with all of them together.
Screenshot 1: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/9903887/BatsJLA1.png
Screenshot 2: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/9903887/BatsJLA2.png
The first one is them just lain out so you can get an idea of the size. The second one is used in the medium sized icon format of Launch-X Pro widget. I could not upload them to the site without resizing, and I didn't feel like it. It wouldn't look the same anyway. You should be able to right click --> Open in new tab so you don't have to download them. Hope you all enjoy!
These are really great! Thanks I'll be using them
Cool! I'm glad someone else appreciates them like I do. LoL
Thanks for sharing!
My pleasure.
Nice work, but is there any chance to get the wallpaper too?
Sorry, you can insert the only original wallpaper of Batman please?
Is beautiful ^_^
Ty very much! like them alot! +1 on wallpaper
nice. Great job, keep it up.
How do I install these, they are AWSOME!
Very Nice . Any chance u can make a Marvel's Avengers set of icons ? Would love too get a hold of that Batman wallpaper too .
I would donate for a set of spiderman icons....both black and red
These are awesome...sorry to hear about he job, slow for me right now too.
Using the scrolling wallpaper
Using the circle scrolling wallpaper, the Batman image and his icons, I came up with this. Nothing fancy, but still pretty cool (to me at least).
*edit*
Here's a better version of the wallpaper with his shoulders not cropped.
original wallpaper is here
Thanks everyone! Feeling the love Here is the wallpaper: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/9903887/default_wallpaper.jpg This one is sized 960 x 854, or perfectly for the Droid 1 and is a bit more on center that the one previous posted. As far as how to install the icons, you can use them easily with Folder Organizer (just open the app, pick a folder, tap on the down arrow on the right side and choose Icon), LauncherPro (long press on dock icons and choose custom icon), or you can use Ninjamorph to substitute them for any app icons of your liking. This is assuming they are already on your SD card and unzipped. As far as making more of them...I would LOVE to! I just need a couple of more days as I am doing a ridiculously detailed theme for my phone that I might release at some date. It's not comic themed as I was looking for something a little more for the masses, but it'll be nice. It's weird because I posted these like a couple of weeks ago on 3 different forums and I think I got maybe 4 responses between them so kind of just figured no one cared. Please start listing a few characters you would like to see and I will try to do the most popular ones. I only ask that it be a figure with a somewhat recognizable symbol so it won't take a year to find something that will work. It took me quite awhile to get the Martian Manhunter icon because of that. Anyway, thanks again for the interest and now I know some more people are interested, I will keep a closer eye on this thread.
Hi - Great job! These Icons with the Scrolling Wallpaper "Dock" and the Batman image combined are the best setup I've had since getting my Captivate.
I have one very minor request, though - Anyway to fill in that hole in the Batman icon and repost it? I don't know if it's just me or my set up, but in the middle of the shine, there is a black hole that looks kind of like a bullet hole. You can see it in my screen capture above.
Again, though, it may just be me...
LoL Wow...I never even noticed. It doesn't show up in the pic I put in the original post until you click on it and enlarge it. I'll look into it a little later on today, so stay tuned. I found a little quicker way to do these so I might be putting more out soon. I already have a couple of Venom ones done...
Actually the same pic that I used for the zip, I had in my dropbox too and I don't notice the hole in this one. Weird. Try it and let me know please. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/9903887/Bats.png
Sweet! Looking forward to it!
Looks like it's still showing up, my man. Sorry!
It's cool. I will whip up another one later on tonight after I finish some school work and watch Modern Family heh. Since I'm making another, any preferences on color?

i mean tutorials are the way a lot of us got going, or really got into it
basically though, just start by using 7zip to take apart the frameworks from another theme and look through the drawable-hdpi or hdpi-4 folders and see the changed images
its a lot to take in though really...not something that can be picked up in a week or something...but dont get discouraged

i don't think you understand the concept of a tutorial
to bo honest i dont think i do...thats why im trying to learn
You really just have to jump in. I use winrar instead of 7zip . But to start, open up a theme that already works for the fascinate ...and just look at the folder tree and understand where everything is ... after that, Start replacing images. XML editing is going to take a tutorial, but there is a lot you can do before you take that step. It takes time ... and patience. Pretty much just jump in .you have an advantage being that this phone is so easy to recover if something goes wrong. It is addictive though ... be warned. The theme I'm working on has consumed my life almost haha.

The point of a tutorial is to show you what to do. So you should give them a shot instead of writing them off.

while i *should* update my tutorial to include more of the basic stuff, the reason most of it focuses on the more advanced xml/.9 things is because in december/january that seemed to be the most pressing issue for many.
i was getting dozens of pms a day on androidforums/xda/irc with many of the same questions, and while i was trying to be helpful and respond it was getting to be a bit overwhelming....so i figured id answer the most commonly asked things first and work back from there...but then dl30 dropped, then eb01 and i got tied up by porting the themes/ports i maintained.
now that im working on more detailed themes that takes up most of my android time...but ill see what i can do about updating the tutorial
Thank u man...sorry for being such a noon :/

So is it really hard to combine elements from different themes to make a new theme? There are several different ones that I love parts of, but I would like to be able to pick and choose and piece one together...
Like for instance, I like somebody the dark themes, but I don't always like plain toggle buttons, and I love the stock gingerbread statusbar with the little vertical battery meter that has the percent in it.... some themes I did the transparent pull down, etc....
I'd like to be able to mix n match
How hard is it to do that?

are most APK's ok to copy from one theme to another? I have many themes that i really like alot and then i found some areas of one theme i like but would like this or that from another. But overall i give you all alot of credit as you all do some amazing work!!!! THank you all
