[Q] Please help with unkown problem - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

galaxy i9000 on froyo, rooted, one click lag fix.
out of the blue, whilst playing my gameboid emulator, phone started vibrating and rebooted. now i can not get into any of my phones data or files, all i get is a black screen, quick glimpse of my homescreen (correct times and up to date messages being received) more vibrating, then another black screen with more vibrating and a quick glimpse of my homescreen. this process continues in a loop for as long as it wants, or until i take my battery out.
my phone was one of the unfortunate bunch that got dispatched from orange that can't access recovery mode.
don't really want to send it back to orange because its rooted, so just wondering if there is any way of doing a factory reset, or any other solution to the problem would be highly appreciated.
thanks, tom.

please help i really dont want to send it back to orange

I would reinstall the stock firmware. I mean do you have a custom rom in your phone as this is all happening? If so, reinstall that rom. But which ever you have, get into download mode by one of these two methods:
Turn off your phone, hold volume down, home button, and vomlume button all at once and at the same time.
Or
Take your battery out, hold volume down, home button, and power then reinsert the battery.
What you are trying to get is a yellow android that's digging. Once/if you get into download mode, use Odin to flash the stock firmware or any custom rom that is Odin compatiable.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App

but he doesnt have the 3 button combo.........
anyway there is a way to fix the 3 button combo, put it in the search bar.
if you wanna do a hard reset and see if that clears the problem type into the dialler *2767*3855#

ah i see. still worth a shot though. my other SGS phone (vibrant) had recovery disabled, but i could get into download mode by taking the battery out and reinserting it while holding volume down, home button, and power button.

PROBLEM
JUST FLASH NEW ROM VIA ODIN YOUR PROBLEM WILL BE short out..........................if I really help u plz click on thanks meter

[Q] HELP failed 2.2 update, phone not coming on

Hi
I have just tried to update to 2.2, i updated Kies first, connected my phone, it came back saying update available, fully charged battery, all seemed to go ok, phone rebooted, but when coming back up I get the logo, and the start up music, then it vibrates a bit the keys on bottom left and right are lit up, screen black and doesn't seem to do anything.
I have removed battery, have tried 3 button restore (no effect) it just keeps vibrating every min or so.
holding the power button restarts it, thats about all i can get it to do.
Have I ruined the phone?? please help.

First question... Did you have a lagfix on the phone before you tried to update it?
Second question... If you answered yes to question one... Did you remove / disable the lagfix before you flashed through Kies?
i had lag fix and was rooted, i plugged it in to laptop and it was recognised and said update 2.2 available, so i thought that was ok.
Now it is as i describe as above, i get battery logo if i plug into laptop, bottom left and right keys are lit but don't do anything, screen is black and vibrates every couple of minutes, if i hold power button get the GT galaxy s screen then the music, then the S galaxys screen which goes black with the two keys lit, if i press power button again it goes off and to the battery logo again.
Cannot get odin or kies to recognise phone plugged in, or get it into recovery or download mode

you didn't answer the question but I will assume that you were using a lagfix but did not disable it before you tried to update you phone.
try removing the battery for a few minutes and try going to download mode (hold vol down + home + power)
Go into recovery mode (vol up + home + power 'till screen switches on) and select the delete data/cache (?) option with the volume keys, using the middle button to confirm. Your phone will work, but unfortunately, you'll loose all your app/settings =/
Should have un-lagfixed before updating :-s
let us know if Rawat's way worked for you.
I had disabled my lagfix too when updating to doc jk3 using cwm and same thing happened to me.
Only way i fixed it was to flash my phone's stock rom, jh2 2.1 using odin3 v1.3 and the firmware from samfirmware. (pda only, no pit, no repartition)
then i upgraded to froyo again and it worked.

[Q] The phone screen turns all green when starting but doesn't freeze.

Sorry friends, I am a newbee and seems I have done a stupid thing on the first hour I got my phone. [It should be reported to the Guinness World Records!]
I tried to check all the combinations of different keys pressed together. The one that got me stuck was – Volume Up + Volume Down + Power. What happens?
The screen turns all green but doesn't freeze. That means, the phone is not bricked but something happened to the display.
I still hear that it works playing the starting music. When I press power to close it, I try to guess where is the place of "Power Off" on the screen, I press it and the phone plays the "Good Bye" music and closes.
If I remove the battery, put it again and press Power, it enters again into a "greenish display" state.
Somebody can help me with any solution to get out of this situation?

These are the details of my phone:
Galaxy S 16Gb unlocked branded from Vodafone
PDA: I9000XXJF3
PHONE: I9000XXJF3
CSC: I9000VODJE4
I bought it from a seller through AMAZON UK a month ago shipped to an address of a friend in London and got it only today. So it will be impossible to return it back and difficult to arrange with Samsung UK support the sending of the device to fix it. The warranty is original Samsung Europe for 24 months.

Can you get the phone into download mode? (volume down, home + power). If you can you can try reflashing the firmware through odin. You could also try taking the battery out and leaving it awhile, but if I'm honest I have never heard of this problem before so am only suggesting the methods I would try. Otherwise give samsung a call and get them to sort it, I would imagine they'll be ok... Good luck!!

Thanks Nagrom78 for your efforts to help me.
I have tried what you have suggested and with no success. I fill in my fingers that it continued to work for a while and seems it is waiting for an input but I don't know the sequel of the keys and which keys I have to press.
I have also tried to do a Factory Reset to resolve the problem. Have you tried to do things blindfolded? It's like working in total "blindness". The phone shows a bright blank green screen and you have to guess what has been written so you could carry out the instructions it gives.
I followed the "Step by Step Instructions to Restore the Galaxy S Factory Setting", as following:
------------------------------------------------------------
1.Turn the device off, or if the device is halting, you can remove the battery and put it back again.
2.Simultaneously, hold the volume down button and press the power button.
3.Menu will pop-out containing the option Fastbook, Recovery, Clear Storage, and Simlock.
4.In this case choose Clear Storage by pressing the Volume Down button.
5.Then press and release the power button.
6.Here you need to confirm your decision, to choose YES press Volume Up button or NO by pressing down button.
Choosing YES will erase all data including apps and games installed; if you choose YES then the erasing process will start. After erasing process finish, the phone will automatically reboot and turn back on with default factory setting.
-----------------------------------------------------------
…. But it didn't does anything. When the phone is supposed to start the process I hear [and fill a vibration] but after waiting more than 20 minutes seeing no reboot, nothing at all, I closed the phone! I suspect they skipped a step in the instructions or I have waited a too short time.
By the way, do you know how long should take the restoring process?
This is the last try before sending back to support
This is my last try before sending the phone back for support.
Somebody has a brilliant suggestion to fix the problem?
Does somebody know the email support address of Samsung UK?
I believe it should be: "[email protected]".

From what you say I guess you didnt try odin yet.by pressing power+down+home then it should go in download mode and let you do the work with odin.so download odin, open it in the pc,press the buttons on phone and connect the usb.if you see yellow in odin then its connected to the phone.if it connected you can probably fix it...

What you're describing isn't what I've heard of before. Take a video or a photo of what's happening?
What did you do to the phone?
Going into download and flashing the phone should fix it I guess.

It seems you haven't read all my explanations. Never mind I"ll repeat them shortly, I know you want to help me:
I go into download mode (volume down, home + power). I hear the phone works (the vibration is on) but I don't see anything. I see only a bright blank green screen. It's like been blindfolded! I don't know the sequel of the keys and which keys I have to press to pass all the process (including Odin that I haven't yet installed). I have to guess what instructions I get. I don't even know where in the screen I have to press!
I suspect I have done a short circuit of the screen and I"ll have to send it back to Samsung Support.

BAD thing after 2.2.1 update

I have updated the phone to android 2.2.1 and after reboot it appears Samsung's logo, vibrate once, but then it goes to a black screen, vibrating something like this: "bzzz.....bzz-bzz.............bzzz....bzz-bzz...." and so on )
The phone didn't restarted by himself, I had to chose system reboot. There were some red lines, but I don't remember what they were saing, as I did not pay attention to them
The update was made through Kies. The phone was with 2.2 version and was rooted with some app from the market, don't remember which, and is from Orange Romania.
So...what I need to do? Does anyone knows? It's not even my phone, my brother has it, but I'm the one who wanted the update )
L.E.: LagFix was also installed on the phone and I think those errors was from some files which could not be edited or something like that...and please, I'm a little desperate...

Which firmware you had before update? 2.1 Eclair? Most known lagfixes supports for 2.2 froyo
Did you tried your luck with odin?
Thank you androidsl for reply. The phone had froyo 2.2. I don't know where to get odin, this is what I'm searching now. I am downloading I9000XXJPY.rar from samfirmware right now. After I'll get it, I will try to install it with odin, even if I never used it before
And that charghing battery appears on screen when I plug it in USB powered off like it's charging. If I turn it on, no sound as a new hardware detected hears, so it's posible to do anything with odin if my computer doesn't see the phone connected?
Another thing...I can't get the phone in download mode :| It must be the one with 3 buttons problem..damn! What can I do?

My every post have a THANKS button. you can thank me from clicking on that
Did your phone have working 3 button download mode?
Press Volume down key and while holding that press home key. while keep pressing those two, press the power button and hold the all three keys until you saw the boot screen. then release all keys.
If you have a yellowish screen saying "Download mode, do not turn off the target", Man this is your lucky day
If I press those keys and release them after that samsung galaxy s logo, it gos into that black screen and vibrating thing again. If I keep pressing those 3 buttons for a long time it just rebooting continuously (samsung galaxy s logo appears-disappears-appears-disappears-appears-disappears etc until I release the buttons and goes into that black screen)
So, to be clear what is going on with the phone. It's turned off. I turn it on and it displays that samsung galaxy s gt-i9000 logo, then that animation with that sound..and that's all. After that..a black screen and vibrations
If you can not get to download mode that is a thing to consider. no download mode mean no odin
In that case i think you have to get a custom USB flashing cable to get into download mode. i saw ebay have that cable for a low price
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=819551
Or return phone to vendor for repair .
jje
you need to hold vol down + home + power while the phones off and it should go into download mode.
what rom did you have before trying JPY?
My brother is leaving town after a few hours and he needed the phone. Eh...)
I will buy a microUSB cable and mod it for download mode. If that's not working...I will go with it on a service. Thank you guys. I thought that something could be done, even the 3 buttons method doesn't work

Captivate is freezing after trying to disable voodoo lagfix

When I tried to disable the voodoo lagfix my phone froze, after about 20 minutes i decided to pull the battery and now the phone freezes when trying to boot and even after plugging in the charger, it freezes on the battery load symbol. Unfortunately, the 3 button way to get to the recovery menu doesn't work. help me please??
I'm having the same problem - phone just hung on the kernel load screen (firebird 2) after trying to shut off lagfix - although I can get to a red recovery mode menu. Not that it's helping at this time. It would be nice if I could recover without a clean wipe of the phone.
Anyone have any ideas. I'll be scouring the threads...
You could try making a jig and flashing to stock http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=841512
how are you getting to the red recovery menu?
i have the same kernel and i'm running the firefly 1.5 rom
I can't boot into anything and the only solution i have so far is to make a jig or buy one and not have a phone for a little bit, which is going to suck..
I've tried the following combinations, just because I know people are going to ask.
1. take out battery, sim, etc.
2. leave out for about 15 seconds
3. plug in the battery, plug in usb and hold two volume buttons-> freezes while trying to load battery status
3.b same precedure as above except plug in usb first hold volume buttons then battery-> still frozen
3.c hold volume buttons, battery, then power button, let it cycle atleast 2 times and let go of power at att logo while holding the volume-> frozen at kernel loader
3.d same as above but with only one volume button at a time, both up and down-> no cigar
3.e all the precedures above while wildly pressing all the soft keys (home, search, yadda yadda) out of frustration -> thinking, gosh i'm screwed
did i miss out any secret other combinations or methods known to work?
I'd really like to do this without hardware, but making a jig kinda sounds like a fun project and i do have a soldering iron in storage somewhere...

I'm afraid not. This happened to someone I know and they told samsung the OTA update bricked it and AFAIK they fixed it for free. They never tried using a jig though, so if you don't want to wait to replace it or anything you could try a jig since it might work and the parts are pretty easy to get (and if you'd be replacing the phone, a jig is ALWAYS good to have anyway)
Just another note to throw in there, the computer recognizes the phone, but strangely my computer freezes while trying to read the media storage drives. I can't tell if the internal sd is mounted because of the ever-lasting wait but i'm almost positive its not.

nope, it says "error device is offline"
You could try ... when the phone is booting and trying to catch it before it freezes is spam the heck out of the command adb reboot download then after hitting the enter button hit the up arrow and keep repeating until either the phone a) hopefully goes into download mode or b) freezes and throws the error.
Who knows.. might get lucky.

it connects even though the phone is frozen. I'm heading over to "The Shack" pretty soon and just making a jig.
Thanks for all your help everyone.
Edit: Just confirming that with much dedication and a steady hand I finally have my captivate up and running with the help of the resistors. I also flashed the 3 button fix stock rom.
Well, I kept trying the least invasive methods first. Tried to reflash Firebird. Then went adb and such. In the end, it was pretty clear that it had hung at the lagfix correction, and I was dealing with a file system error. I was eventually able to get into download mode. The hardest discovery was finding that I had gotten the wrong drivers from samsung. The ones in the [stock rom] odin master clear page were what I should have been using. When I loaded those, the computer recognized that I had a phone and not a "serial gadget" and then I knew I was close. Odin finally saw the phone, and a couple tries at "light" re-stocking failed at file analysis, so I did the repartition (aha, file system error), and it shot through the whole process and I had my phone back and flashed to Serendipity in about 20 minutes.
But I would like to know about the red menu. That was unexpected (blue for standard, green for cwm).
No need for a jig. I had access to some phone functions, most importantly, download mode.

Phone freezed after rebooting!! HELP!

FIXED
After rooting my Samsung Galaxy S, it got bricked and got stuck on the black and white logo sign. The home buttons would light up but I had to take the battery out to turn it off. When I plugged in the USB at the battery sign, I pushed the volume up and volume down and power button at the same time and let go of the power button when the screen flashed back, then let go of the volume buttons after awhile. That took me to the download mode. I tried other methods like one click un brick but it didn't work. After following the instructions to the link below it now works fine!! I'm so glad because I almost sent it to Samsung for $70. I hope this will help anyone else who is having the same problem! If I can do it, I think anyone can do it! This was my first time trying to root a phone without knowing anthing.
Here's the link:
http://androidspin.com/2010/08/09/how-to-restore-or-recover-your-samsung-vibrant/
Also some helpful tips when using the Odin program:
-before you plug in your USB cable, put the tar and pit files into the same folder as the extracted odin file so you won't run into any problems
-then after plugging it in, if the box in the Odin program doesn't turn green then disconnect/connect USB cable again and it should turn green
so I found out it crashed because i was using root explorer >< I had no idea it could do that to my phone. anyways I looked up how to hard reset the phone when its frozen. is that the only way? because its not working. the first thing to do is hold the volume button down and then press and release the power button then three things are supposed to pop up. but everytime i try to do that, it just goes to the black and white screen >< any tips or advice?
You should press the volume down + home button + power button, then the phone will enter in download mode and from there you can flash a new working rom with odin.
Or if you want to wipe data you can press volume up + home + power and it will enter in recovery menu.
thanks, but I think I really screwed up my phone. because I tried that and all the other ways to put it in recovery mode but everytime I push those buttons the black and white screen keeps blinking
Can you put the phone into recovery or download mode with adb?
adb reboot recovery
or
adb reboot bootloader
That sounds way too complicated after looking it up. I don't think I should mess with it because it might mess up even more. Do you think how much it would cost if I went to a phone repair shop? If it's more than $20, I'm gonna do whatever I can to do it myself. T_T
So i found out that if you push the volume up ANd down button ANd power button at the same time it will let you clear all data and restart the whole phone. I did that and when I turn it on it makes the tmobile sound but it still freezes at the black and white sign. Any suggestions? I don't want to pay $70 and send it in to samsung T_T also, I forgot to mention but I used root explorer to try to change the framework. would that have been the problem? or would it be the installation of bug busy installer? because after I installed that it kinda froze on me. But I used root explorer before and didn't have a problem with it. Anyways, anyone can help me on how to get it off the black and white screen?
