Picture of CM7 on the NC - Nook Color General

Just came across this thread on the CM forum. It really looks like a nightly is on its way. Not to rush a ETA though, let's give them time to cope with the SOD.

[ROM/AOSP] Cyaonbread - The Best of CM6 and 7 All Rolled in to One - v1 soon

With the buildbots not up yet, I've been working on a little project in secret for a while. I call it Cyanobread. My plan here is to make a CM7 that has all of CM 6.1's bells and whistles before the CM7 team does. Some patches I will probably submit, and some will be only for this ROM as they go against the ideas of what Cyanogen wants. I haven't decided yet if I will keep this updated once the buildbots come back. If it divulges from the CM7 project significantly than probably.... otherwise I will just keep this as a mod for a few patches you can add to CM7.
My philosophy behind doing this ROM is the fact that I love CM6 and have used the nightlies as my daily driver and was very dissapointed 7 wasn't up on the buildbots.
Even though this is mostly a CM7Src ROM, please report any bugs here and I will do my best to either report them to the CM Team or fix them myself if I can. Same thing goes for any features you'd like to see added.
My approach to deving is a very collaborative one. Invisiblek, jladronka and DS36 will be helping me with this project. If any other devs would like to help, please shoot me a PM. The more the merrier, I really want to see a nice group project out of this.

I'm very interested in this.
You let me know if PSX4droid works and I'll be all over this ROM.

Just saying...
Interesting (but then again, I'm a ROM hua), I'm on board.
I'm also interested in Cyanocomb when it's ready. ;-)
sounds interesting, i'll definitely try it
Looking forward to it.....I know I should not ask, but.....ETA?
lol I dont go by the No ETA rule so long as you dont mind if you're wrong.
well this has been an in work project for a few weeks... finally had a full compile this morning but was missing some apps.... so i decidedd to make clean and do it again... first time my laptop blue screened, then it hibernated because I forgot to plug it in.... I'm thinking within a few hours.
I'm looking forward to this.
Back in my Blackberry days we used to call these Hybrids. Some of the most functional, stable BB OSs were patched together from different OSs or even bits and pieces from different phones.
Of course, some hybrids were the biggest train wrecks also...
I have high hopes for this. Good luck!
Heh, FrankenROM.
sorry for not getting this out tonight... I had a few minor setbacks. Teaser installer video coming in a few minutes. Right now, it is completely stock CM, and you can think of the teaser as a .5 of sorts. v1 will be out tomorrow I promise. Very minor tweaks that I am going to do to start out with.
Excuse my ignorance, whats the point? Isn't CM7 the best of 6 and 7 all rolled into one sprinkled over some Gingerbread?

This ^^ I'm running gridlock's CM 7 latest build and so far, it's got all the mods that CM6.# has, on GB.
What exactly are you planning on adding that it doesn't already have?

Cause I went from Cm6.1 to to 7 up to the latest 32, and there's nothing at all that has made me say "Oh damn, I miss that from CM6". CM7 has TONS more tweaks, and a pretty bad ass music player.
Glad to see I'm not the only one wondering what the point of this is...
when i started this project that wasn't the case. a lot o the goodies in CM6 were missing... I plan to add my own little touch to it and hopefully diverge from the CM project slightly. Video's not going to happen, having some issue with the touchscreen....will look at it in the morning.
hmmm... no issue with the touch screen... but somehow this compiled lacking a keyboard... blah... i was hopeful... oh well... will deal wiith it in the morning

Is Nook Color in Limbo, or are we at the cusp?

Is Nook Color in Limbo, or are we at the cusp of something new?
I hope development for the Nook Color has not stagnated. Are we waiting for the new kernel or is there just nothing new on the horizon?
I am just wondering because I have been watching and waiting and it appears development has slowed up for the time being. Not implying anything, just looking to see if something new and wonderful is on the horizon???
I was so looking forward to Honeycomb and it seems Google has pulled the rug out from under us in some back room deal.
Hopeful

What are you talking about? In limbo? Bluetooth, recent video fixes, new overclocked kernels, work on the next coming edition of kernel to prevent SOD. Man, you must be out of the loop or really impatient.
The Release Candidate of CM7 came out recently. That means a final release is eminent. That final release should include all these awesome tablet tweaks:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1002000
I don't know why you say development is slowing down. I have been flashing a new ROM everyday thanks to mad-murdock!
Im sorry, but what ARE you talking about? In the last month, both hardware accelleration for video and bluetooth were turned on. CM7 has reached release candidate stage, and our devs have said that work is progressing on both a newer kernel version, as well as fixes to the few remaining bugs. Maybe you should actually read some of those nifty development threads around here...
If i am coming off as rude... perhaps that is the intent. There are so many needless threads like this, where some reading and critcal thinking could answer alot of questions. I mean.. developent stopped? As it is, things are ramping up, and a quick read of the forum would show that. Add in the constant misleading talk about what the nook can and can't do, and it is rather frustrating. So yeah, I am venting, but i think it is well deserved.
On the contrary, I think that things are happening real fast. CM7 is heading for a stable release, Mad Murdock's tablet tweaks are a real innovation, as are brianf21's froyo status bar improvements, and real progress is being made in the kernel area - blue tooth, hardware acceleration, etc.
What more can we ask for?
only HC is at a minor hump, the rest are busy, and b&n update is dropping soon. you crazy!
had to chime in to see what the op is smoking...
cm7: hardware video acceleration, tablet tweaks, bluetooth, kernel mods.
froyo: status bar tweaks, 'nookie-comb' looks nice, new official rom coming soon
honeycomb: who cares. google screwed that one up so we wait for IC.
Honestly, right now I'm in limbo about WHICH custom, daily updated, feature rich build to use !
Rooted Stock is good enough for what I do, but then a few games didn't work... so i went to froyo... then tried CM7... then a custom froyo, then another CM7... (and a few hardlocks and flash to stocks in between)..
At this point i just want a "1.0" release of CM7, or for HC to become available... although i'm sure the weeks following HC will be daily build after daily build.
p.s. kinda jealous about the $300 Tegra2 tablet floating around.

You want limbo?
My new Droid 2 Global has just one rom which works with global sim capability- flashed it shortly after I got it and no updates since.
Another crew did get D2 roms working on the D2G but no sim card use.
Nothing for months now...
My original DROID has more development work going on than THAT!
The NC has been fairly exciting as far as dev work since Christmas and the last month has been incredible...
I even saw a post fairly recently that leads me to think some folks are working on USB host.... Crossing my fingers on that one.
The last two weeks we have even had a guy working on tweaks for tablets that pretty much makes Honeycomb's issues irrelevant as far as I am concerned.
I'd say that is pretty good.
Sorry, not the intended result.
I guess I am waiting for BN to come out with Android 2.2, I wasn't denegrating all the hard work that has gone on here. A couple of developments have kinda skewed my perceptions, one of which is Honeycomb source being yanked, and the other is of course the expected update from BN not materializing yet... I guess I am getting a little impatient. Sorry for the misunderstanding.
I am using Nookie Froyo at the moment and it is working, however I really liked Stock 1.1.0. but with the NC using Android 2.1 I can't do some things I'd like to do. It just seems to me that BN is dragging their feet. Hence my concerns.
As I understood your original post you are waiting for the official 2.2, not a developer build.
The last rumor that I heard (from these forums) was that it was to go out this month. (but that was a rumor)
Not really sure why people are flaming the OP so hard. Besides CM7 nook color development has practically stopped dead in its tracks. HC is stuck, froyo has been dead for a while.
So i can see how it seems that way unless you watch CM7 development it does look very dead. CM7 is usable enough that froyo is not really relevant and with googles decision to not open source HC means its pretty much dead in the water.
Actually with Tablet Tweaks, CM7 is still seeing updates almost every day. And there's I believe an Experimental Kernel hiding in the CM7 User Thread which seems to have cleaned up the Battery Life on CM7.
As far as the official 2.2 update... Who needs it when you've got CM7? I mean, even if it does come out and we nooter it, it's still not going to do everything that CM7's custom rom can.
HoneyComb, yeah it sucks that it's not coming out right away. And I was pretty upset myself, but with tablets coming out (with similar prices to the nook) that have HC already... I can wait.

Why waste any more time (right now) on anything BUT CM7? I mean, yes, Froyo and Eclair are dead in the water, but that is good; it just means all the devs are working on the best system we have. When HC source drops, i expect most work on CM7 to dry up, and again move to the better OS.
So yes, dev is on one OS right now, but my oh my, what sweet dev it is. If you call that stagnation, you are crazy..
I'm eager for the bn update just because I like to actually us my nook as an ereader rather than just a tablet. I'm a big fan of the mags and the kid books. Besides, I get my cm7 fix on my dinc.

if you know of such a kernel can you link to it?
Also if stock goes to 2.2 and gives us all ability to play flash and the extr speed improvements of a JIT compiler ad can then be nootered and overclocked, why would one need CM7? This way you also get the ui from B&N which includes built in back and menu buttons. It also includes the full B&N experience for reading magazines subscriptions books......You los that on custom Roms.
So while I laud the Devs work, getting nook color to froyo might make much of their work unnecessary, unless it gives them a better platform to make the NC even better.
Unless the stock update brings bluetooth, CM7 will always be better. Sure, i guess there are some people that want the ereader functionality, but there are those the enjoy better hardware functionality.
Not to mention, i guess i am one of few, but i really hated B&N's framework modifications, and really enjoy a stock Android UI..

I really hope someone manages to port over the slick reader app from stock to CM7.
I like reading on my nook but not at the cost of such horrible performance in everything else.

Bluetooth works awful at best.
Regular headset doesn't work and range is a foot.
So far most people have keyboard trouble. Seems ext. bluettoh gps seems to be the best bet. So for me a stock rom with all the current missing goodies fixed with nooter and o/c?
I'd be happy.
Outside of bluetooth, if you had fully supported 2.2 on your device so hardware accel video and flash worked perfectly and yet you still had the B&N experience when you wanted it for free instore reading and subscriptions .....what else would you really want?

Thoughts on switching from HCv4 to CM7?

I'm curious what anyone who has had experience with both thinks about switching from HCv4 to CM7. I've read some of the previous posts on the subject, but it looked like most replies were back in February, so now that we're at the end of 2011, any thoughts?
I've been using HCv4 for about as long as it has been out, and it runs very, very well in my opinion. But since development seems to have died, and now ICS is maybe going to make HC development DOA, until ICS comes to the Color Nook I was thinking of checking around for alternatives.
I've seen that CM7 seems to be very popular, so is it currently the most compatible and fully functional Android version that runs on the NC? Is it better all the way around now than HCv4? Have the video and audio problems been worked out, or are there other drawbacks? Any suggestions will be appreciated.

CM7 is actually usable unlike HC. Yes basically all issues have been squashed. I suggest you switch ASAP. No point using dead, and incomplete software.

The main reason that it has no report/response since Feb is 'cuz nobody else uses it (a little exaggeration) except you and some others, very minor. Did I love HC, heck yes, beautiful GUI, I'd tried both HCv4 and 2 others (forgot from who), honestly, beautiful, but that's about it.
Since Feb til now, when ICS is being developed, I'm surprise that here and there, still people asking about HC.
CM7 - Gingerbread (full support)
CM8 - Honeycomb (die before born)
CM9 - Ice Cream Sandwich (in labor)
As the author of one of the ports, it still baffles me that people are using the darn thing. It was designed as an experiment, and honestly never expected for real use (without the hc source). Any remning users ould go to cm7 post haste, and hang in there for cm9 to roll aound..

You know why? 'cuz the one you've made, I believe the entire HC image file, was so beauty, seeing the GUI, honestly I didn't want to go back to CM7 but like I said, that's about it.
Yeoouch..
Hmmm, I guess I feel chastised for still using the Honeycomb SDK hack on my color Nook, but honestly, it has worked very well. Though I'm not living and dying by what I can or can't do with my Nook, it's been plenty usable while waiting for a better, cleaner, faster version of something to come along. 99% of the apps I've tried have worked, and the few that haven't have not been missed enough to change to a different mod just for them. So I'll grit my teeth and just say thanks to anyone who contributed to the HCv4 version I've been using.
I may try CM7, if only because I like knowing what my options are, and because I may give the thing as a gift to my daughter, who won't want to mess with a kludged version of Honeycomb. It's the eReader apps and their functionality that matters most at the moment, and I don't think that will matter whether I'm on CM7 or HCv4.
eh, I wish ICS was already out...

Unofficial nightlies?????????????

I dunno I seem to remember there being Nightly's and stable releases. Now we have Unofficial Nightly's. Why? This isnt going to continue is it? Eventually we will get back to just Nightly's and Stable right? Not that its a big deal just seems unnecessary.
As I look through the threads I see there are a good number of people running these Unoffical Nightlys so maybe someone can explain to me the difference between Official and Unofficial. Are they that bad that they cant be official? If they are that bad why are so many people running them? Seems to reason that the unofficial is stable enough so cant we just make them official for god sakes. I mean really whats the worst that can happen? Its not like Cyanogen is going to be sued. Its already assumed that official nightlys are not going to be stable so whats the problem?
Official is being built by the Cyanogen servers and released at their discretion. The unofficials are users creating their own builds (usually with modifications) and being released separately.
That being said, CM7 has been in development for a while so there are both nightlies and stable releases. CM9 is still in early development, and Cyanogen team hasn't been releasing nightlies yet. The ones you see are users releasing it on their own.
You're either not very smart or a terrible reader. Unofficial simply means private individuals are taking it upon themselves to regularly post private builds that they made themselves, for others to take for a test drive. Official builds would come directly from CM, which has not happened yet.
Get a clue.
Perhaps your highness would be kind and gracious enough to direct us to a place where we could read that explanation (assuming, of course, that we can read such lofty material)..
Tongue firmly in cheek.. but.. hey Dude.. lighten up.

I'm kind of confused due to your confusion
What "Unofficial Nightly's" and "Official Nightly's" you are seeing?
Don't tell me that you are confusing the Official Nightly's of CM7 and the Unofficial Nightly's of CM9.
Two different things.
Im sorry! Im trying to keep up with the development of the Nook Color, HTC Droid Eris, and the Galaxy Nexus and I lost it. LOL Not too mention my search for the perfect router to finally rid me of that god awful Linksys WRT54GS combined with the overkill Smoothwall finally ended. My home network has been in shambles till recently. Again I apologize. Its purely my mixup and clearly nothing to do with the information provided at XDA. I just needed to search a bit more. Or I could have asked like I did here but maybe in a more positive tone. Im sorry for that as well.
So I recently purchased the GNEX and I love ICS. OMG I cant tell you how nice it is to finally have a proper smart phone with polished Android Goodness. I want the same for my Nook. From what ive read so far the "Unofficial Builds" seem to run pretty good. Users reporting it runs as good as CM7. Is this true? I mainly use my Nook for watching Netflix and Hulu. I do some light browsing as well. Would the latest build work well enough for me to hop in now?
Thanks for your help and understanding!
I don't know how far but CM9 is far from stable as CM7

Awesome. Reading comprehension skills FTW.
CM9 is nice. Personally, I'd wait for solid wifi and any true resolution on HW accel.
CM7 had 'official' stable releases and 'official' nightlies built by the CyanogenMod automated build process. The last stable was 7.1 but there were nightlies after that which continued to fix some remaining problems.
Back in mid November 2011 the build process suffered from some hardware failures and the nightlies stopped appearing. At the same time ICS was being released and the devs switched their attention to that (CM9) and, although the build process got repaired, the CM7 nightlies were never restarted.
There were some outstanding issues in CM7 that had got fixed but never built by the official process into either a stable or a nightly. That is where the 'unofficial' builds stepped in and built new ROMS from the source incorporating the latest fixes and including some other improvements. The most common of these is the MiRaGe build found in the thread in development and that has been very stable, gives great performance and is often referred to as 7.2
CM9 is effectively still in an alpha form and does not have official nightlies or 'stables' yet. The developers did encourage people to learn how to build ROMS from the source and some have now made these 'unofficial' nightlies available.
Some find these unofficial CM9 nightlies good and stable enough for daily use; I am one. There are trade offs; the CM7 ROMS are generally a bit snappier in performance and there are one or two limitations in CM9 functionality (e.g. hw video acceleration) but this is balanced by a significantly nicer user interface and functionality in CM9. You just choose based on what is important to you.
Nandroid backups are always your friend and allows you try out various options at low risk and just a few minutes to fully restore to a former point.
Thanks for the summary and info.
But how well does Hulu and Netflix work? Right now thats the most important thing.
Im currently running CM7 stable with the processor clocked at 925. I see alot of people running overclock kernels so when you say CM9 isnt as snappy to which are you comparing to. Low end or high?
Either. I'm running CM9 at 1200 right now and there is still lag (haven't done any tweaks though, working on other things). Besides that, I don't think Netflix is working on CM9 yet. If you are wanting stability, smoothness, and more application compatibility, CM9 isn't quite there yet.
It's funny how the people calling the OP clueless seem blissfully unaware of the situation with nightlies the last few months, but bobtidey broke it down well. The automated system for CM7 nightlies is broken, but the updated source is still available, and some people are sharing their builds from source (MiRaGe being the most reliable atm).
If Hulu and Netflix are your priorities, CM9 is probably not for you just yet. You can try it out a number of ways,
As bobtidey said, back up your current build, flash CM9, and if you're not happy go back.
Set it up on SD--there's a link in my sig for that, just grab CM9 and a compatible gapps instead of CM7.
Repartition the NC and set up a dual boot like mine (also linked in my sig) with MiRaGe's CM7.2 and Samiam's CM9.
If you just want a fresher flavor and don't want to mess around too much, I'd say go w/ MiRaGe's build.
Blah! It is what it is. As stated things have been pretty hectic around here. Now that I think of it things are always hectic. So I overlooked something and needed correction.
I just may dual boot. Ive wanted to try MiRaGe for awhile now anyways. I hear great things. Should be a nice upgrade over CM7 stable right? Thanks for info!

[Q] [DISCUSSION] AOKP vs CM9

Slim coz its near stock, fast, smooth, better battery etc...
I use AOKP milestone 4, at the moment I think it's better than CM9 cuz it has less bugs but in the future CM9 will be a great release.
I tried CM9 nightly 20120402, after using AOKP since Milestone 4. AOKP put up a new build shortly afterward, and I switched back. Only really missed little things from ROM Control, like the battery icon and centered time+day. CM9's root permissions looked interesting, but I didn't play with it enough to test it.
And mini-droids circling a burly unicorn is way better than the non-skating "Cid" flying past a ghostly fog. That's pretty terrible. Weird, considering Steve Kondik said they were dropping the term kang to make things more professional. This boot animation is ghetto; CM7's is much cleaner.
errata: Linux Outlaws just made fun of Cid: "He looks like a Teletubby"
On Rootzwiki.tv, Roman said he hasn't tried CM9 in months and couldn't run down the differences. Hah.
Anyway, these are nitpicks. CM is pretty awesome. I just like swaggy unicorns.

AOKP for sure ... faster & give more options
CM9.. its stable.. works for everything I need it too.. slim is alright too.. a little bit of both worlds

I expect CM9 to go full throttle in the near future.. For now, I gotta give it to AOKP. Customizations are better, I think. Also, it's faster than CM9 (that's how I feel about it, guys). Always, it's a matter of preference. But, again, for me, AOKP is slightly ahead for now. ^.~
Both okay
At the end both of them are awesome so choose which one you know well
I will be waiting for cm9 to post a stable release... till then its JW4 for me.
I think AOKP's ROM Control has a little more customization right now, but I still prefer the toggles and overall operation of CM9. I am hoping that they're "preference stub holder" options will soon be filled in
