Thanks to Getaphixx, the guy who dumped the phone, for testing this out for me! He has the worlds first rooted Atrix, CONGRATS! Thanks to Fixter for confirming on a retail model.

MOD EDIT:
This is a development thread, so please help keep this thread clean. Questions like "What is the advantage of root?", "What is an encrypted bootloader", "What is a locked bootloader", SHOULD NOT be asked in this thread. Use Google or go here. Any relevant useful information will be posted in the stickies in due time after the device is released. Thanks for your continued support of the devs but let's keep things tidy for everyone else.

Woot! Oh boy I love to see root before the phone is even out. Makes my day!
Why did it take so long?

Thanks Designgears and youareme7 and others that assisted in this endeavor I wasn't made aware of.
It has been a refreshing experience dealing with XDA and their Devs. I only hope future contributers are lucky enough to encounter someone as genuine and intelligent as Designgears. This interwebz would be a better place for it. Look forward to getting more phones for some rooting fun with ya'll!
Also A VERY SPECIAL THANKS to those who've donated to me and others here. What may be a small token of your appreciation speaks volumes to the type of community members we have here! And receiving money is never a bad thing!
Well that was anti-climatic. lol
So what's next on your plate? Encrypted bootloader by Sunday? (I know it might not be encrypted, just making a point.)
No joke the NSA couldn't crack the boot loader.
Grats Hope further development will come! and no Problems will arise.

Man it is nice to see that you're going to be active on the atrix DG, you made the captivate worth keeping as long as I have.

+1 Totally agree - had it not been for DG and some of the other devs, i would have surely abandoned my captivate within the first week i owned it!
As always, nicely done DG. +100 online respect points.
Fantastic! This was something I was hoping to see before I put the money down for my Atrix. Now let's see that boot loader folks! Fingers crossed.

Speaking of the bootloader, DG, will you and Getaphixx be able to put your heads together and find out if the bootloader is locked, or will you actually need to have one in hand to play with before you can check.
Does this mean Froyo built-in wireless tethering can be enabled? And junk apps can be removed? I don't have any experience with Moto so I am not sure if an unlocked boot loader is required for those.

Yep! 10char
Im amazed that they have already got root for this! I really cant wait to see what gets cooked up for the Atrix in the coming weeks im super excited!
What method was used for root...rageagainsthecage?
I had faith presale... lol I knew this thing was going to have everyone on here's attention.
I will transfer funds to my paypal and go 50ea. as well. ROCK ON GUYS!
Can anyone quickly advise if it would be feasible (if the bootloader is locked) to build a distributed computing XDA app so all us non-chefs could help out in that way?
Make that 75ea. I'm so excited. lol. (bank trans takes 3-5 days so prob end of next week).
I'm confused as to why no one knows if the boot loader is locked or not if there's a rooted one in the wild? please be gentle I'm noob-ish, I've been installing custom roms for years but I read what I need to, in order to get that phone done how I want it then usually drop out again so I'm not very familiar with all the processes going on behind the curtain.

I can't seem to find a good post or thread about this so I'll be the one to ask the dumbest question.
Can a GSM rom be flashed to a CDMA tab? Other than networking issue with the modem, will phone actually boot and be usable on wifi? I'm assuming it most likely will either not work at all or just FC constantly but wanted to ask first.
MODS please delete after a few answers. I don't want to waste thread space...
Anybody has flashed this before ? And i don't know can Verizon tab be able to flash rom for Sprint Tab ?
Waiting for anwser too .

One of the other members did and it worked, I am not sure what was FC'ing but he was using it that way. A word of WARNING, if you accidentally flash the modem with the GSM one, its dead forever! You cannot restore it!!
But yeah it should boot, and be able to use WiFi.

Verizon and Sprint use the same radio's so this should not be an issue
OK second question. Where on earth can I find the VZW firmware files to use with Odin or Heimdall? I flashed the Klean ROM and like it but then I realized I was having problems finding the stock pit and pda files to revert back to stock if needed!
I would love if I could use GSM ROM's. I bought a Verizon TAB (mistake now that I realized this) and just use it for WIFI only so network access is not an issue for me.
Is that file you need ?

Downloading now but I'm pretty sure thats it! You are awesome. And I'm a lazy searcher.
try this... its the vzw recovery package i use... unrar and bring it into hiemdall... try using the voodoo overclocked kernal with it... great improvements, blazing fast, and the sound is unmatched... im not sure why, and i could very well be doing it wrong... but when i flash the zImage for the kernal, i always have to flash that zImage into the recovery as well... like i said idk why but 90% of the time my flash will fail unless i do that... so if you have any problems try it... hope this helps!
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=TC4G5IYC
probably the same files... beat me to it haha
I'd actually really like to know this as well... I've got a VZW tab I was given from a friend who updated to a Xoom... I'm only ever gonna use it wifi, and am a bit disappointed in the lack of roms for CDMA tabs... if a GSM Rom would work, and let me use wifi, that would be great for folks like me.
How can I avoid to flash the modem with the GSM one ? I usally use heimdall-frontend.exe to flash !
I could be wrong, but if you go through frontend dont you have to manually palce the moden file into the slot for modem? couldnt you just flash everything but modem? or is it in the kernal as well??

Yeah, I got a free tab, and I know next to nothing about it, so I'm trying to find out some information. I dunno that I would call expressing mild disappointment really classifies as "*****ing" but, hey, thanks for YOUR contribution to the thread too, guy. Super helpful. I understand the VZW tab isn't nearly as popular, and that means less people working on it, or maybe there are technical difficulties or something. I have no idea. I just know there is less information, etc. out there about it, and that's disappointing. Nowhere did I say anything like "people here suck for not supporting my device!" The ROM makers here are a talented bunch, that much is obvious... I really like what they're doing, and I'm guessing so does the OP. That's why we're asking about GSM roms... we obviously liked something someone made, and wish we could use it on our device. We're trying to find information, and you come and attack someone with the equivalent of an ER nurse getting mad at a Vet for coming in with a question about their daughter, and demanding that they help treat her themselves.
If I had ANYTHING even CLOSE to as helpful as some of the people here to contribute right now, I would... but I don't... I'm just trying to learn about this device. At my level of knowledge right now, I don't HAVE anything to give. So very sorry if that somehow offends you personally.

Hmm. I wonder what my PM reply from you will have to say in it lol. Anyhow, is a soft brick inevitable? Are there options I can avoid such as obviously not flashing the modem? Or param.lfs? To prevent a soft brick. One person claims it worked on a certain ROM from them. I know I can find out the hard way myself but if I can benefit from someone else's experience I'd like to see if I can do that first.

Think about it guys you've got devs, and then you have those of us who are just using what the devs design, be it lack of knowledge or lack of effort, either way if you have a free tab, make a backup, make a couple backups, and try it, or maybe get with a dev working on your tab to add the features of the gsm tab to our vzw tab. help them test it, It makes sense that devs get pissed when someone says i got a free tab, do some research, make some effort to further the development for a device in which the devs purchase in most cases with they're own money, and if they brick it in the process they are out alot more money then you are. and the way they save them selves is by again treading on undiscovered territory. So instead of asking make some attempt. learn to use the emulator, learn your device, if you are just getting to know the device then it may not be a good idea to jump right into rooting, and flashing roms....

hey connexion2005, any update on the video? i´ve been surfing around the forums for a couple of hours now and haven´t found any procedures on how to get overcome on the VZW tab. just wondering
Greetings everyone,
Well, Please know that I'm just placing an idea here and it's up for discuss before executing.
We (Users) sometime see those new atrix roms posted here and we think.. Oh! I don't want to flash a new rom now because I need my phone up and running or because we don't have the time.. But... I was just thinking then how it is for the devs??!
I'm talking especially about Ririal and Kennethpenn. Wouldn't it be easier and more convenience for them to have another Atrix phone beside theirs to crap the hell out of it testing new things for next rom changes and added features for all of us? + It still makes a nice gift for all the great work they have done here for all of us.
I was thinking that a new off-contact Atrix 4G at amazon wireless costs $600 USD.
So if we said each contribution is $20. then we need 30 donations each to buy an Atrix. 60 to buy two, for Riral and Kennethpenn.
That is just one suggestion on how donations are divided. I'd like members opinions as well Riral's and Kennethpenn's response about the idea.
Thanks.
I think its a great idea/gesture. I just wish I had done money to donate. Switching jobs now. Hopefully I'll be able to contribute soon.

I would much rather get it into the hands of people like Quarx, who are working on 2nd Init or the Devs who think they might have a chance to bypass or crack the bootloader. Like the guy that cracked the Xperia X10 bootloader.

I'm with you on this one. Most of the guys here probably have a backup phone to use if things go downhill while deving.
What a nice gesture, guys. This is really kind of you to think about.
However, I strongly reject the idea that any Atrix devs need an extra phone. With the exception of kholk, who is working hard on the bootloader (if he's still working on it), none of us are at risk for bricking our devices. Save your money or donate to the themers and MOD creators instead.

Almost all bootloaders are locked. Its the signing/encrypting that is the problem not the lock.
Appreciate the gesture guys. The kind of work we do, at it's worst, will require a reflash. While a second device would be nice to have (Atrix is my main device, so every time I mess up I get to wipe all personal settings ), it's not really needed. If you want to contribute, the donations you guys already send us are more than enough.
Thank you. it was just an idea.
Because we know how it must suck to have your device offline and in the bed-test for too long in order to bring those goodies for us.
I hope you guys will continue supporting the Atrix after a method to bypass the bootloader is achieved. It must be a harder work if it was a full-featured rom, so maybe we will re-open this subject then.
Thanks.
Well if new phones do come out, some employees at certian national retailers do get discounts on phones. I know at some places this can be $200. Where I work the atrix was about $200 off for an off-contract phone. So if in the furture a new phone does come out that the devs need then it might be a good idea to try that route. Also, since it is considered a "gift" than it should not be breaking any internal rules of any kind.
I donated to tenfar specifically so he could get a phone. anyone know if he still around?

Partially true. The security on the x10 is very different than the security on the Atrix. Motorola seem to be the only people who are able to do it properly

I rooted after a week, but I could personally care less if you root yours or not. If you aren't new, then you should already know what to do.
Personally I think it is a little deeper than the question you pose. To me it is all about pushing Android itself to better places and thus having wonderful developers in here doing just that. Supporting the developers as they help mold Android into the best it can be is what it is all about. HTC and other manufacturers do take note of what is going on by the developers on this website and thus, it is helping to mold Android to better things. That is just my humble feelings on that.
In saying all of that, I have not even rooted yet...LOL!!! I always root and support the devs but I will feel way more comfortable when that 4.2 update hits this phone to do so. I thought we had it for a sec there with that first update. Not real sure why I feel this way other than feeling all warm a cozy and to settle in on a particular rom and kernnel. I am not what you would call a flash junkie so when I flash something I like it to be at least based on the latest Android version if possible. And I am a dummy at this dev stuff so there ya go my 2 cents. :silly:

Even with stock this phone is simply outstanding and I'm sure LG will update it to lollipop
But it needs lots of developer love for sure
I'm also learning how to develop, just for the love of this device

Not by any means a developer, but I'm pretty tech savvy and know a few languages, so if i can help in any way let me know. I want to get this ball rolling!
We are gonna need some help from mattwheat also. Busy this weekend but will check out some things soon....
Guys the bootloader is definitely locked down tighter than sh#!. But there is a work around. I.e. "BUMP"
With the Flex 2 now out I figured all hope WS gone for this device. If I knew more or had the time to learn like I used to have we would be rockin some AOKP, RESERECTION, OR some CM-12 based ROM.
I used to be on night shift for years and had all the time in the world after work (hence my 3am and 4am post). But I've left that company to start a new job that is now day shift. Which allows me more time with my son. But cuts into the amount of time I used to have. But I wouldn't change it for the world. But I will help anytime I can. But I think by summer I may move to either the Nexus 6 or the Flex 2 <--- only if the boot loader is unlockable like the LG G3 is.
It is a shame about the boot loader. Gave the flex to my daughter and moved on to the
Nexus 6 and have no regrets.
Great news cm12 incoming.check out lg-devs at github
Got 4.4.2 ZVB Rooted w/ TWRP 2.8.0.0 w/bump so if you need a tester i'll be scoping the forums, if you need a tester!

It's about as old as this thread. This phone needs a developer willing to spend some time. Start a CM bounty thread and see where that goes

Since it is rootable and a custom recovery can be installed. It should be a near walk in the park for the devs.
XDA has become part of my morning routine now days. Getting up, eating and checking to see if any breakthrough came with the Sprint G4. I may just be blind, however I don't see anything coming soon. Granted it's a /newer/ phone which plays a huge role. Anyways does anybody know of anything relating to what's going on with the Sprint G4 rooting process or possible new ROMS that may be coming out if I didn't see a root already available?
Note: I'm also not the most knowledgeable when it comes to this but I know my fair share.
You should probably follow this thread for now:

Thank-you for the link! After I posted this I found another thread where a few developers have managed to get root with all carriers however it isn't necessarily the "easiest" way to succeed in their efforts. They just don't want so many bricked phones which I understand. However, thank-you again!
this crap is taking ridiculously long.

Sprint G4 is already rooted, and chances of bootloader unlock are slim to none.
