Question for WiFi Tether - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have an Ipod, and want to use my WiFi tether using my phone for the internet on my Ipod. It reads my Phone when it scans for wifi networks, but does not have a connection. But when I try using it for my computer, it works. Does the settings need to be changed? Thanks.
Using Liquid Sense Rom 2.1

Witch tether are u using

nvm, seem to got it working, although a harder method. I tried using barnacles wifi, but keep giving me shell init error, and wouldnt broadcast. Then used WiFi Tether, but in order for me to use that, I always have to go into terminal and type in
su
cd /data/data/android.tether/bin
./tether start 1
otherwise it will not give internet access, even though it broadcast.
any other methods to fix this?

When using barnacle u have to go to settings and custom adhoc and select hero that's why I just use wireless tether from google lol

Jezzz, thanks for making me look like an idiot, haha, thanks alot. Had to update my barnacles to see that in settings.

I agree. Wireless tether is so much easier. Even changing settings, barnacle has never worked for me.

Tethering app out for Dev Phones!

I was just browsing the Android Market earlier today and then I found an app called "aNetShare". It does the same as WMWifiRouter (minus a few features such as encryption and custom SSID), but still it works well!
You need a rooted\Dev phone in order to get it working, but it is available for free from the Android Market!
unfortunately like WMWifiRouter i cannot seem to get my linux computer to find the AP, oh well back to tetherbot
i have been using wifi tether for root users and it is working great and alot easier then the iptables great app

Yeah, but the wifi tether only works through the phone's wifi.. then the point is kinda gone.. This one uses the 3G\HSDPA\GPRS connection!
Wifi Tether for Root Users uses EDGE/HSDPA/GPRS. You connect your computer to the phone via wifi, and the phone in turn connects to the internet via EDGE/HSDPA/GPRS. Not sure what else there is. I guess the ability to connect the computer to the phone via BT amd USB.

[q] wifi hotspot

I keep reading that this is possible on the hero, both with and without rooting... I know this is a noob move, but will anyone forgive me and point me to the right forum to accomplish this?
Go to the Market and search for Easy Tether. There is a free app and paid app.
tried that, but it doesn't make the phone into a wifi hotspot... unless i'm missing something...
AFAIK, the only way to do what you want is to root and use this app, Wireless Tether for Root Users

+1 this is the only way that I have found. And Btw this makes a wifi tether via ad hoc and therefore is not an actual hotspot. Think tether not router.

Yeah, it's not infrastructure mode, but you can still connect multiple devices at the same time. Some devices won't connect to ad hoc though

Since I have only ever connected one device at a time to my phone, how much slower is the internet connection when more than 1 device is attached at the same time?
Two works ok, but three surfing at once seems to push it

What if I use my linksys router as a repeater or repeater bridge?
Hell I will try it tomorrow and let you know. I have dd-wrt flashed on my router and I can change my wireless mode to anything. i also have 2 separate wireless reapeters.

Yes, that should work in theory. Don't know if it matters or not but our devices run wireless tether in ad-hoc mode, not infrastructure

I know, but I'm hoping that my router will detect it.
I saw a post on the Incredible boards that they got their wifi tether to work in AP mode... is that not possible for us?
also, I've connected up to 5 devices to my phone at once and it doesn't go too slow as long as my phone has a decent ev/3g signal.

[Q] wifi tethering not working

i installed cyanogen 6.1.0 RC1 after which i am unable to using wifi tethering. someone suggested me to use the wifi tethering app for root . but that also hasnt worked.
my laptop connects but i can browse any websites.
Me too... Same problem (no data transfer showing in phone)
I wonder if T-Mo have disabled some how?

There is no reason to use WiFi tether for root, when it's implemented much better in the OS itself.
As I wrote before in another thread, there might be another APN that needs to be used to allow tethering and full internet access.
In T-Mo case - I don't know what might be the reason.
I'm only using the native tether, or at least trying, but it doesn't seem to be working as of this morning...

well for some odd reason i tried to connect using my office laptop and it worked . there wasnt any problem with wifi tethering. so my personal laptop wifi driver might have an issue. cant think of anything else.

reverse tethering?

greetings,
just got my first android phone a week ago. captivate. kicks arse. anyways ive been wondering if there is a way to 'reverse tether'. in other words share my pc internet with my phone so i dont have to use so much of my data. i dont have wifi on my pc but i have a bluetooth dongle that plugs into usb that enables connection of bluetooth devices. i was thinking maybe i could tunnel thru the bluetooth and somehow access internet thru that. wishful thinking or a possibility?
Actually what u want to do is create a adhoc network where ur computer sends out wifi via a incripted network go to network and sharing center and go to create a adhoc network u can look it up in ur help guide its differing with each operating system hoped I helped

Ad hoc eh? Been seeing ad hoc something-or-anothers in the market and whatnot and wasn't sure what it was. That would be setup within windows on mah pc correct? And then mah phone would just recognize it as an available wifi connection?

Non rooted phones can't connect to Ad-Hoc networks.
Yeah im rooted. Should have made that clear right off the bat, sorry. That being said, it IS possible then to tunnel thru the bluetooth dongle and use my pc's internet? Remember, my pc doesnt have wifi
Just cable internet. Im just looking too leech off my pc with my phone and not vice-versa.

After further investigation pdanet seems to be able to do what I seek. Is this the only/best option?

Since the PC has bluetooth, you can create a Bluetooth NAP or PAN on the PC side. This creates a "personal area network" that you can then connect to from the phone. Some bluetooth PC software supports this, some do not. Depends what your dongle supports!
right on! thanks for the reply.
i was actually trying the PAN option yesterday after discovering it via google. couldnt get it to work tho. i get stuck at the part where i have to select the service i am wanting. it says the only services available from my captivate are Active sync, Headset Gateway, Object Push, Obex File Transfer. Active Sync seemed to be the closest thing but when selected it doesnt add a shortcut in my devices like the options do so i figured it didnt work. far as i know active sync id for winmobile or something anyways so i wasnt counting on it.
Any advise from here? It's all very much appreciated.
This too must have already been covered. I'll look elsewhere.

As said before, unfortunately Android does seem to connect to Ad-Hoc networks easily. If you are running Windows 7, you can use Connectify to create a WiFi hotspot and connect through that.
The other alternate is to create an Ad-Hoc network and join that network. I have not been able to get this working correctly yet but other phones have.
The problem is that the native wpa_supplicant filters all the ad-hoc networks from the wifi network list.
You can get the patched wpa_supplicant with allows you to see all the networks here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=754961
Remember to get the 0.6.x version.
Then I believe you have to set your wifi to use a static ip to be able to connect.
The last time I tried I managed to get a connection on Froyo ROMS but no data. It just might be my settings on either ends.
excellent reply. thanks are in order here.
For closure, I ended up using connectify. Works perfectly.

Tether without root app?

So the wifi at my college is really messed up right now so I really need to Tether. Are there any that actually work? The ones I try just tell me I don't have an appropriate data plan. Even something like a wifi repeater would work because for some reason my phone and xbox can connect to the wifi just fine yet my laptop can't

Without root I don't know of any 3rd party tethering apps. Besides it sounds more like your laptop is having the issue not the phone/router. A couple things you could try from the PC end, run "ipconfig /release" then "ipconfig /renew" from an elevated command prompt. If this doesn't work or give you errors about the network state try this as a last effort. Go to device manager, locate the wireless adapter, then uninstall (note do NOT check the delete drivers check box). Then do a rescan of hardware and it should reinstall your wireless back to default without any conflicting settings it may have had. You will however lose your list of previous access points and possibly keys. But I've fixed many a dead internet connection by just doing that.
