I'm trying to root my friend's G1, I've downgraded to RC7 (Or the US RC29) but I can't access recovery mode. Every time i press & hold (home + power) it boots me into the boot loader.
I've tried flashing using a different memory card, no dice.
Anyone have any idea? & Is there anyway to flash RC8 (Or RC30) without using the recovery mode?
I've searched all over google & all over this forum, nothing would fix MY problem. Appreciate any help!
Catch me on Irc and I'll see what we can do.

root your phone via Superoneclick method and download CWM's rom manager. Open rom manager and click the "Reboot into recovery option" and see if that works.
If it doesnt, try flashing CWM's newest recovery or alternet recovery from the rom manager, in this case, RA's v1.7.0 and see if that works

Appreciate your reply.
I would use superoneclick or androot, but I'm on RC7(RC29) OS 1.0 & the apps just force close.
I've also tried a ton load of Amon's recoverys & Clockworks, but they don't seem to work.
I can't even access the stock recovery when I press home & power buttons, it just boots up the boot loader with a "seria0" in the middle of a white stripe.

Guys,
I'm losing my mind here.
I've tried to install the CyanogenMod but I've run into some problems.
Why is it so damn difficult to install this?
I've spent 4 hours following different guides and none of them are step by step.
The ones that come close, never mention possible issues along the way which you then have to find on other forums.
Anyway,
can someone please help me with the following:
I'm getting stuck on booting into recovery.
I run the command and the phone reboots. however, it then presents a Triangle and an exclamation mark!
The instruction show that I am supposed to see a Green text recovery screen.
I'm having to hit the up volume and power button, which gives a blue text recovery screen with limited options.
I've tried the Amon_Ra's Recovery process and the ClockworkMod Recovery process to no avail!!!
I also tried the rom manager but the app keep giving "An error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands"
I know it's something that I'm doing wrong but I'm very close to throwing this phone out the window and going back to an iphone... This is just not ****ing worth it.
I've done everything up to reboot to recovery part from this guide: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Nexus_One:_Full_Update_Guide
/please help.

Go to this thread. Read it. Download the apk. Root your device (you could not flash a custom recovery because you are not rooted!...). Download RomManager from the Market. Install a custom recovery through RomManager and you are done.
Reading other thread now.

mhhh ok. So you probably have no insecure boot image. That's probably why you can't flash any recovery from RomManager....
Try this at MoDaCo. Download an unsecure boot image... And try again.
Downloaded Universal Androot.
Clicked to root, goes OK ok ok ok ok ok ok ok then "Failed ! No ~~~ Fu Goo ~~~
edit - trying superoneclick

ok, superoneclick seemed to have work and rooter the phone!
using rom manager to flash the clockwordmod recovery now. Lets see if it fails and gives and permissions error. If not, I'll boot into recovery and see if that works.
thanks for the assistance thus far.. /puts iphone back in the drawer.
recovery worked, ran the update.zip
downloaded the Cyanogen mode via rom manager, but when it tried the clockwork recovery, I get the triangle again... frustrating.

what update .zip?
I have the same problem...Well i rooted with superclick then when i go into recovery mode and click on recovery it shows a white triangle. I removed the memory card while rooting, could that be the problem?
You need to delete the following two files, and reinstall your custom recovery. These files restore the stock recovery during a full boot.
/system/etc/install-recovery.sh
/system/recovery-from-boot.p

Remember, once rooted you will need to instal a custom recovery. You will also need to delete the two files I mentioned above, otherwise you will lose custom recovery when you boot...

Sorry, I'm a bit new to all this.
Can you please tell me exactly how to remove these files?
Do I need to download a terminal for the nexus one and run some rm commands?

The CyanogenMod file that I downloaded. Number 7. I changed it's name to update.zip and moved it to root of sd card when trying to do it manually without rom manager before.

so are you now rooted and running cm7-build#10 nightly or still trying to do it?
my lack of knowledge/terminology been sitting here for hours trying to root my phone with no luck. I know it is doable through ADB but I tried installing it and it didnt work. I tried the one click root method too but when it gets to the "repackage files" step, I just plain don't have the option on the menu, here are the options
reboot system now
apply sdcard:update.zip
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
format internal sd card
when I press the update.zip it says unverifiable whatever. ( not in the mood to reboot it just for this)
is there anything on here that actually is just straight up for a beginner?
I am completely confused past this point.
Try using Superoneclick v1.5.5

You're on jl2 right?
Problem is: Recovery 3e is verifiing signature on update.zip file, you'll have to get on Recovery 2e in order to root from an unsigned update.zip.
you can probably use the search fonction to find the "how To" easely. It took me less than 10 minutes gettings mine rooted.
Personnaly, all I did is flash another kernel with Odin
http://touristinparadise.blogspot.com/2010/11/samsung-galaxy-s-how-to-install.html
K So I upgraded to the kernel you told me to and it booted up normally I have my market back and the superuser permissions but when I press superuser permissions it doesnt show anything other than settings which only have two trivial options.
what do I do from here.

That is fine if you have the superuser app show up, that means it's rooted. You won't see anything in there until an app needs superuser permission. Download titanium backup when you first boot it you well be prompted for superuser access click allow then next time you go into superuser app you will draw titanium backup in the list.

I love you more than anything.
How do I start adding paid apps and stuff for free? possible at all? I downloaded that and busybox
Bump i really need help im not the smartest
bump ive been trying to do this for 5 days now
super one click is the easiest way of all
make sure it is in USB Debug Mode
and that it is connected to a computer that can see your phone in ADB mode
make sure the USB drivers are installed for the Kies and Android SDK
+1 for SuperOneClick
I'm on JL2 i9000m too and rooted with SuperOneClick.
Sup guys, I've got the Bell I9000M in Canada aswell, bought it less than a month ago, and I am not on JL2.
I, instead am on JK4.
What do I have to do to root my JK4 I9000M?
Any replies would be helpful. In the end, I would love to be able to get Darkys Rom on my phone, but no one responds in that thread nor does anyone really know what to do with my phone version.
If anyone could help me out, that would be great. Thanks
Help pls
OK so to start off i had this samsung galaxy s GT-I9000M from bell and i was trying to upgrade it so that my sister could use a newer version of android and not the boring v.2 . ANYWAYS I rooted it then reboot it and it was stuck at the splash screen so i thought it was stuck and i searched for a way to fix it which was to get the PDA PHONE CSC and PIT files and put them in odin and hope for the best. well that turned out horribly wrong. i ended up getting the phone stuck in some boot loop where it flashes a white screen and turns of and it does this constantly :crying::crying::crying: I can still get to download mode but not recovery mode for some reason...... PLS HALP
I rooted my sprint htc hero a few weeks back, I think I did it right due to being able to use WiFi Tether from market, which only works on rooted phones (as it says). Anyway I'm using the wifi tether and its working well, but now it seems that my phone is not rooted, the wifi works still, but when I downloded busybox, titanium backup and both state that they can not be installed due to non root access. when I hold down the home and red keys I get this triangle with an exclamation mark. so am I still rooted ( I dont think so) and if not how do I get back to being rooted. thank you, and please i'm noobish here so links with simple step by step instructions please.
The easiest way to find out you are rooted or not:
1. Connect your phone to a computer that has "ADB" setup. With your "USB debugging" set to On on the phone, type adb and then "su" without quotes
2. If you have "Terminal" installed on your phone, open the app and type "su" without quotes
If either of the above give you "#" prompt, you are rooted... if not, then not .
About the red exclamation mark, have you flashed a recovery? If not, you need to flash a recovery.
u need to have a custom recovery for busy box when u get the red triangle thats your normal bootloader.
to instal a custom recovery the easiest way is to download rom manager from the market and go to the top of the app to were it says instsall clockwork mod recovery and click yes.
Another method to tell if you're rooted is to get the app Root Checker (free) from the market.

Hi,
I was wanting to perform a nandroid backup of my phone so that i can upgrade to the latest baseband as I don't really want to wait for it to be released in the uk.
So I turned the phone off and then powered the phone back on. I have read through this forum and on google and found I need to press The power button and volume down until android appeared. So...
The first time I did this the first screen I got to was the updating screen. I let go before the screen appeared as my htc hero (phone before my O2X) booted straight into recovery mode after holding for a second or two. I had to pull the battery and let the phone reboot.
The second time I did it I got to a box with an arrow pointing out of with the android outside of it so I let go again. This time it has wiped the phone back to factory defaults.
Could someone please tell me what I am doing wrong please. Obviously the nandroid backup is useless now I have nothing to backup but I'd still like to know for the future.
I hope someone can point me in the right direction
Sedge
If entering recovery reset your phone you didn't install clockworkmod recovery. Install CWM from a thread in the O2X development forum or download ROM Manager from Market
Oooooo that makes me feel like a right n00b.... cheers for that. Do i need root access for cwm?
If i was to get rom manager does that do the same job as cwm to get into recovery mode??
thank you so much for your help!!

Yes you need root, if you use the one from my thread, it gains a root shell to flash it, but doesn't perm root the phone.
Use SuperOneClick if you want proper root.
Cheers for that rusty. I might just perm root it tbh then i can also do a titanium backup and use that. When you say it needs root to flash, does Cwm flash something onto the phone to make the phone enter recovery? If it does, what does it flash?
Thanks again!!

It flashes itself so you can boot into it.
You can use ROM Manger to boot into it, vol- & power, reboot apps from the Market etc
