Would anyone like to post there likes and dislikes about the ROM so people who do not have it can know what to expect?

This thread is for issues related to the rom. Likes and dislikes are user based and will not do any good as for what to expect and all custom roms are a best for you type of thing. I could say that I like this this and this about the rom but some one else would say that they dont like the same things. See my point? Each rom has an outline for the rom in the first post.
Love the rom. I'm on 2.1 and have noticed my camera won't work, just FCs. Extracted some old phoenix and SN roms I had on my phone and tried to copy the .apk and camera firmware into system/app using root explorer and reboot. No luck. Any ideas? I would prefer not to reflash.
Thanks in advance.

In addition to the point that each user/device could respond differently to the ROM/Modem/Kernel. The 3 of us could be running identical setup's and all have very different experiences

Just wanted to say thanks for starting this thread. As a noob it's nice to have a way to communicate until you reach your post count.
I am running;
Rom: super nova 2.1
Kernel: speedmod-k13b-500hz #54
Baseband version: i9000ugjk4
The problems I am experiencing aren't a major deal, just thought I would mention them.
1. When I am connected to wifi and try and use the Facebook app I get a connection timeout message. While using at&t data I don't.
2. I get a FC when trying to open the Fox News app.
Enjoying Adams and teams work, thanks.

Try restoring the stock email.apk that came with the rom, no idea why they're tied together but they are.
As for FCing on the Fox News app, I got that too and just uninstalled it, not sure why it was doing that.

Thanks for the help. I tried replacing the email.apk that I had with one from my other ROMs and that didn't work. I ended up using SGS Tools and updating the Hacked Camera.apk and that did the trick.

SN 2.3
Has anyone checked their "About Phone" info under the settings after flashing the 2.3 download and still see their "Build number" as Supernova 2.1??
Shouldn't this be 2.3 instead of 2.1 or was the revision number suppose to stay the same this update?

Have not had an issue with gmail at all. Are you restoring anything before trying it? Did you do a stock flash and master clear and then load the rom?

Thank you for letting me know. I went through a few pages, but I must have not looked at early enough postings to see anyone comment about it.
I could tell the update took effect when the kernal was updated to Speedmod and some other graphical difference when flashing from 2.1, but just wanted to make sure.
Also, does anyone know where to grab the 2.1 ringtones from the zip file? There was a nice one in there that I'd like to get back.
Thanks in advance

Ah awesome, that was so easy! thank you!
I am on 2.3 and this is my favourite one so far. Really enjoy the Phoenix team roms. With other roms I have noticed that when you touch the screen the soft home keys do not light up. If you touch the keys themselves they light up for only 3 seconds. I found I had to use an app/widget called keep the lights on for that issue. With this rom however, the soft keys work perfect. If I touch anywhere on the screen they light up for 10 seconds or more just like my stock did.
If I ever check out another Rom is there something I could import from this to keep that great feature? I don't think I will be flashing for a while after this one. But once flashaholism sets in sometimes I have no choice...lol

Thinking About Migrating
Hello all, I've been a loyal Perception user since I purchased my Captivate and tried out several of the active ROMs. I've started to look for a new ROM since DG announced that the Perception line was defunct. I have a few questions regarding Supernova:
1) Are there other themes, loaded stock, with the ROM. The black one from the screenshot isn't really my style.
2) Does this ROM include the three-button fix? My phone is one of the unlucky few that cannot boot to recovery mode via button holding.
3) For those of you who have flashed many a ROM and decided to use Supernova, what do you like about it best? Why did you select this ROM over the others available?

1) Yes there are other themes, I am currently running SN JS5 version and using Nunhugger's Absolution:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10254722&postcount=5
at this point, it appears most JPY/JS5 themes will work with any JPY/JK3/JS5 ROMS
2) My phone also does not have 3 button. But it has the extended power menu, long press on the power button gives you the option to boot to Download, Recovery, Reboot, etc.
3) Honestly, I move between Phoenix, Supernova, and FireFly. Adam and Team have a level of detail I havent seen around, but the big part is the support. There is NO flaming on his threads, so people arent affraid to ask question if they cant figure something out. They are all solid ROM's very stable, very well put together. In the end I couldnt tell you one of them is better than the other, just a little bit different
it's a long way to go.my captive's screen is so cool.

Alright guys, getting a little bored with the stock ROM! What is the best ROM floating out there? Are all the ROM's just easily done with a update.zip file, or do you usually have to use Odin?
Depends on what you're looking for... official Captivate firmwares other than JF6 are all internal test builds ATM. As far as ROMs go there's a decent variety of options to choose from, but they all depend on your personal preference.
However you've come in at sort of a transitional period, we've got lag fix kernels, we've got OC kernels, and we've got kernels that make I9000 ROMS work properly on the Captivate, but all of those things aren't yet merged.
I recommend you keep on reading, check out the different threads, figure out what suits you, and if you don't find what you're looking for- wait a week, I'm sure someone will come up with it

the i9000 ROMs are generally cleaner (less bloat, a little more streamlined). they're also more recent for the most part. they have other features that really comes down to user preference though. I enjoyed the i9000 ROM I ran much more than the stock captivate one.
I suggest trying it and comparing it to how you used JF6 and go with whichever feels better to you. Each ROM has it's own bugs. Last time I ran an i9000 ROM was JM5 and it refused to clear message/e-mail alerts unless you manually backed all the way out, can't say if it's fixed yet with later releases.

They're a bit more mature development-wise. The I9000 has been on the market longer is and is ATM Samsungs "baby" so they're getting all the newest updates. In addition their firmwares don't include any of the bloat that the Captivate has since international carriers don't care about stupid crap like "AT&T Navigator"- they also don't care if people can sideload.
Don't get me wrong, cross pollinating I9000 ROMS can have their own little annoyances, like flaky haptic feedback and scuh, but the reorient kernel takes care of the really big issues.
One thing you should REALLY look into before you start flashing ANYTHING is whether or not your phone is capable of using button combinations to get into recovery and download mode. Some of the newer handsets arent. A good starting point would be to turn off your phone... let it shut down completely, then hold both volume buttons and power on. If you get into the recovery menu, GREAT.
Next step (Assuming you passed the first), power off your phone, hold both volume buttons, and plug in USB, if you get the android guy with the shovel that means you're good to go, you'll have to yank battery to reset from this point, but this verifies you can achieve download mode, which means game on for careless flashing!

I've seen mention of people being unable to achieve that. I presumed they were just getting the timing wrong.
So if you fail that, does it mean you are unable to change ROM?
no,it just means that you will have to be more careful, and that you may not be able to fix your phone if anything goes wrong.
my 2 cents
Well for what it is worth. this is my daily driver as of now.
I went into odin and flashed back to stock.
Flashed the i9000 JM8 rom( the Phone CODE file from JM8 and the CSC from JM5)
Then flashed the stock captivate kernal and the .512 pit file
once that is done i flashed Unhelpfuls kernal over to OC
Then i flashed the Tatumia(sp) rom over it.
Ran the OCLF app from the market and changed my scheduler to deadline.
It is by far the best for real world performance and my quadrants are in the 2200-2300 range(like it matters).
Enjoy
P.s. i have flashed i am sure every other combination of roms and kernals and stuff. Voodoo kernal is freaking awesome but i cant get Clockwork to work with it and that is just not okay with me!
I just found the long thread about this topic here. Haven't read through it all yet. Won't bother unless I find I end up with a phone with that problem.

Nobody knows when it will be available since it is only getting Vibrant support to start. Cyanogen mod is probably the most popular ROM for Android, I don't know much about it though. They have a wiki page and a website for information.

cyanogenmod is a HUGELY supported ROM based on AOSP (android open source project) with various tweaks to improve usability. as for release, well the only rule about cyanogenmod is that you don't ask for release dates
officially, the Captivate isn't even supported, only the Vibrant is. But as shown, moving things over from Vibrant to Captivate isn't terribly difficult, but still takes time and we'll need someone to maintain it (cyanogen does not release/support devices it doesn't expect to work properly on). support for the vibrant is slated for 6.1 (which will probably be November, it's hard to say)
let me pop in and say there is no "Best Rom" just best for you. We all look for different things in the roms we use so it really is a trial and error. Just make sure to read, read and read some more to make sure you have everything set up right and dont end up with a big brick.
I am closing this.
good luck with your rom search
Can someone tell this newbie what the differences are between these two ROMS? I've currently running Eugene's (saw it first), but am curious as to what I would get (or miss) if I was to flash Team Whiskey's instead.
My biggest gripe with the Vibrant is the piss poor batter life. I run Launcher Pro and never really cared for TW.
Can someone post the biggest differences between these two ROMS so I can decide if I want to reflash? Also, I assume if I flash to Team Whiskey's Obsidian, I'll have to reload all my apps....... yet again? I have them backed up using Titanium Backup.
Thanks for helping the new kid out.

honestly its all personal preference... theme... included apps / removed bloatware... each rom (and theres actually one or 2 others floating around the first couple pages) offers different things... I flashed eugenes unoffical stock tmoobile rom... and like yourself i hate stock tw launcher so i installed the modified tw launcher.. which is located in the i9000 forum... (also in eugenes r10 rom... and a link to the thread in his rom description)... so flash each one.. if you use odin make sure you are able to access recovery / download mode via the hardware buttons... (read the vibrant bible.. all the info you could want / need on customizing ur vibrant)

If you go with Team whiskey's Onyx it already has TW removed and LP installed since no TW also cuts down more on lag since TW never has to load

Hi all Thanks to all.... Newbie here with flashing and all so i just want to get started on the right track... being doing alot of reading just wanted to know what is the safest rom right now for the captivate....
also ive downloaded bay_wolfs AIO captivate tool ...if i use this tool i dont have to go through the the whole process of installing rom manager..zip files etc..do i if i read correctly..well thanks all in advance for the responses.....
It depends on What you want. For a really bare bones rom, use precision. For a close to stock rom, use cognition. For a well themed and polished rom, use serendipity or ultimate. Cognition is the only captivate based one though.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk
yeesh - sorry but most of these get locked in 10 posts or less as these become "My ROM is better than Your ROM" epeen arguments.
With that being said.. if a ROM is posted in the Dev forum and as long as it doesn't say Cyanogen Beta or Gingerbread alpha AOSP in it? It is pretty much safe to flash.
Most of these ROM's use either a Rogers, Captivate, or i9000 Source and don't deviate other than tweaks to apps/kernels/modems/lagfixes/themes.
If you want to be safe - I would go with Cognition as a first ROM flash then go from there. It is basically "stock".
Thanks guys for the quick posts....Just a little worried about doing it for the first time i have read, watched videos, this is why im asking before taking the plunge...
i really like Bay_wolfs tool seems great for newbies has anyone used it...i think i may go with cognition is there a better version than the 3.4 what i mean is the newest version seem best or and older one...
I also flashed my first ROM the other week after lots of reading and studying. I went with Andromeda 1.0 at and have since gone to 1.1. I didn't use the tool that you're wondering about, but have downloaded it for future use. So if you do use it, let me know how it goes for you. I went with the installation instrustions on Andromeda's website, and that worked flawlessly. Once you do decide on a ROM, I'm sure that you'll be extremely happy as the performance is way better than stock. Happy flashing and good luck!
Like the other posters said, it's all about what you want and then personal preference. Once you have flashed a few you will start realizing what you do and don't like about the ROMs and what you really want in them. (My first ROM I had no idea, I was like, lets just flash because it's cool and custom and I feel like it. Then I started noticing the differences between my first ROM and stock, realizing what they can actually do with it and what they cannot. From there I figured out what I was really looking for by going custom, and starting browsing the released ROMs to find it)
In short, your first ROM is just that, the first. It wont stay there long so it doesn't really matter which one you choose. Cognition, like stated above, is a good start because it's pretty close to stock. If you want to just straight into a very custom one and screw the baby steps, try something a little more feature rich. Eventually you will get into trying different ROMs with different kernels and test out over-clocking, etc...
I would recommend for your first that you don't go with an OC ROM though, save that for when you feel more comfortable with your ability to flash and tweak things.
I have never used the tool you are talking about because I feel more comfortable doing all the .zip stuff and seeing what is actually being done to my phone, not trusting something else to do it. The tools I do use are Odin3 and One Click Root/Unroot. If you want to try flashing without that tool but aren't sure of the exact steps or why they are necessary you can PM me and I'll help you out.
Welcome to the addiction of ROM flashing! (It's harder to shake then cigarettes once you start)
You guys are great here thanks for all the tips...tonight i will be flashing my first Rom hope all goes well if i have any questions i will ask...once again thanks...

Do not flash any of the Gingerbread ROMs unless you really know what you are doing. They are still unstable and you risk bricking your phone. As for stable ROMs, there's a wide variety of them, and they're all based on Android 2.2, which is really fast. There is no best ROM, and it all depends on your personal preferences. Try visiting a few of the ROM threads to check them out, and hopefully that will help you decide which one to flash.

Ok well not 10 or less this time but close.
There is no best rom just best for you. I could say Rom X is the best and does everything I need it to and when you run it, you dont like it or doesnt work well with your set up.

Serendipity 5.10 + Da_g GPS Fix?
Hello,
I'm a new comer to this Forum (aka noob )... Since last week I've been flashing different ROMs to my Captivate, always looking for a workable GPS on them.
I tried most of them, liked Serendipity the most, however I cannot make the GPS to work! I was reading the Da_g GPS fix, however I didn't look anyone there testing in on the Serendipity ROM. Has anyone tried the Serendipity + Da_g GPS Fix? Is it possible? Is there other way to make the GPS work on Serendipity that I'm skipping?
Another question, why does the Labs Test Mode Secret Code doesn't work on the Serendipity ROM?
Thanks and apologies if the questions are really noobs or asked in other forum.

Cadejos,
First off the GPS on the Captivate will never fully work. We as ROM builders can do the best we can to make it work just slightly better. Serendipity does include some of these GPS fixes.
To get into the lab test mode try Captivate SGS Tools. Here
Hope this has helped!
ChanceM
The GPS works fairly well on Serendipity, for a Captivate, I've had pretty good luck with mapping and navigation. Get the GPSRestore app Samsung put on the market, run it to reset any fiddling you might have done, and then go from there. I had followed Da_g's thread, but the GPS was working ok, so I never ran his fix.

First off you guys have done a great job, everything works the way Samsung should have made it work and then some, phone is impressively fast especially since it's not running on 3g network. Although I have only been running serendipity for about a week it's great and my GPS locks within seconds every time.I just want to make sure im not missing something since i'm new to the ROM thing, everyone keeps mentioning making sure the kernal is up to date now I started with serendipity 5.7 and am now running 5.10 do I have to do anything else as far as upgrades go?

Although I have only been running serendipity for about a week it's great and my GPS locks within seconds every time.I just want to make sure im not missing something since i'm new to the ROM thing, everyone keeps mentioning making sure the kernal is up to date now I started with serendipity 5.7 and am now running 5.10 do I have to do anything else as far as upgrades go?

Here is the link to the SpeedMod kernel thread. This is the kernel used in the ROM. The kernel is now up to version 13c, the one that comes stock with the ROM is a few versions back. You can flash the newest one with the SGS Kernel Flasher. Download the ODIN version here.

I update the kernel version in the base ROM. If you were to flash the full 5.10, you'd get 13B.
I leave the kernel updates out of the updates since many people don't use speedmod and would have to flash their kernel if choice again after.
Sent from my Captivate.
Mikey, I wanted to say that I absolutely love your rom. I'm new to the flashing roms but I'm starting to catch on to it a little bit. I love the inverted Gmail, but there is only one issue and was wondering if it could be looked into, it's very hard to tell which is the new email and which is the old email. The only difference I can see on mine is that the black background box is a little darker on the new emails. Is there a way you could make the old email maybe not bold or something. Just anything to distinguish new emails from old besides the darker box (which isn't extremely noticable). Besides that, I can't say enough good things about your rom. Thanks again.

Can I flash the clockwork mod version of speedmod from recovery? Great idea to have a separate section for us noobs. Remember, there are no stupid questions...

Actually, I was asking about updating the speedmod kernal. I should have quoted the previous post that refers to using sgs kernal flasher with odin version of speedMod kernal.
Yes u can. download the cwm version and flash.

I used Odin and it took me about 2 min.(including downloading ODIN) so not sure if clockword mod would be any different but it was extremely easy to do with ODIN and I'm new to this stuff

Hello,
I'm a new comer to this Forum (aka noob )...

I haven't read the other replies to you yet, but have this to offer:
I have found the GPS to work fairly well, but not perfect, with the Serendipity ROM.
However I have given up on expectations of great GPS from the phone natively. What I have done is invest $35 (some are less expensive on eBay) for an external GPS that the phone hooks to via blue tooth, and it provides accuracy down to 3 feet. I'd suggest saving yourself the aggravation and making that investment if you expect to use the GPS much. I only use it for actual navigation. I find the internal GPS is fine for all other things needing GPS.
Here is a link to a thread about using one.

yes it is possible and i do it via cwm. use cwm zip of the kernel (good that now the odin version is in .tar to avoid any confusions and errors)
quiet a few point you shall consider before doing so:-
You may want to change /system back to rfs if you converted it to ext4. It may not flash/install otherwise if you are changing from a different kind of lagfix.
This is my first ROM to flash on my phone, and I really enjoy it. I am overall very happy but there is a few issues I have ran into.
The major one being the "reject with message" feature. It does not work at all. Am I doing anything wrong? does this just not work on serendipity? Let me know if anything can be changed because I really miss this feature.
I also cannot get my e-mail to sync up, but this may be a user error.
If anyone can help me with the reject with message feature, that would be great.

Are you by any chance using Google Voice? I am , and it has never worked with it. (I wish it did).
I'm thinking it may have to do with the Messaging client you are using. I know that there have been various posts about loading different messaging, due to various issues. Haven't seen this one mentioned before though.
I am using the stock messenger that came with the flash. If this is an issue with just this client, any opinions on what I should use? I really didnt have a problem with the samsung messenger, but I have heard good things about other clients
Flashed Cognition 4.3.1 last Friday. Just took the family to the zoo today and made heavy use of the camera. numerous times the phone would Hard Lock and reboot itself while switching from Video mode to camera mode and vice versa. Anyone else have this issue? And if so, is there a tweek to fix? I tried the Cognition Q&A but got no replies.
Thanks.

Are you OC/UV?
Also, it could just be a bad flash. Try flashing over Cog and see if that fixes it.
What do you think the ROM-specific stickies are here for? Please use them and do NOT start a new thread. If no one replied it is probably because no one had an answer or experienced the same thing.

Sorry... Don't know what OC/VU is....
Appologies to all for posting a new thread here. Will revert back to the Cognition Q&A. XDA is Awesome even if some people are rude to noobs! (Miami_Son)
@ Miami_Son - Man you got told haha
Either way, just try clearing cache/dalvik and reflashing. I believe it should fix your problem
Thanks.! Quick question.... I see you are using the Firefly 3.0. Do you like that better than Cog? how is the GPS issues etc...? I had to flash plumbob 1.0 to get my GPS to work with Cog. I may scrap the whole Cog tryout and go the Firefly route. Not sure if the Moden is compatible though...UCKB1

If you go for FF, get a full flash FF 3.0 / speedmod k13e / jk4
It's your best bet for stability
As for the GPS, it's not really a ROM problem but a Samsung problem lol. I personaly use Adam's GPS Fix (you can find it in the theme and apps section I believe).
As for the ROM, it really comes to personal preference. I can't tell you "use this, it's better than this" as they all have their pros and cons but tbh FF is by far my favorite.
All I can suggest is that you give it a try and if you don't like it as much, feel free to revert back or even try other ROMs (beside 2.3 based one as they're all on beta state).
Also if you go for another ROM, know that you do NOT need to flash back to stock before switching. Simply clear your cache/dalvik and flash your new ROM through cwm.

Rude is thinking you deserve special attention and that you can just bypass the forum rules for your own gain.

Please note the "APOLOGY" given! I do not think I deserve "special" attention. Get over yourself already.
