Perception Q&A - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey Guys I put together a Q&A thread for this rom to prevent tons of new threads about rom Spicific questions from new users.. Please feel free to post any questions here.
As Aslways there is no Flaming, name calling or the such.
No question is too noobish, But please look for your answer first.
Now for the info needed to help. In your post make sure to included the version of the rom you are using, modem, kernel, ext...
Also please give it some time for your question to be answered.

is there an easy way to get the rotary lock screen on perception?

Has anyone else had trouble getting FB contacts to sync with their phonebook? I've been trying non-stop for two days now, with full bars and 3G. Anything i could try that might work? I know its possible because i've flashed this same rom before, but its not working this time
Romerception Build 10.3
Kernel: rGB-v.4-Voodoo # 10

R.I.P Perception.
DesignGears has pulled the plug on Perception...see the dev thread. It has been my favorite! But, he's still working on Cog and MIUI.

I have perception 10.1 and its worked great. Except for the fact that yesterday for the first time I tried to play mp3's on it and they wont play. The built in music player tells me it doesnt support this file type. WTF?? Is there a missing codec from the android system or is the music player just messed up?

My only question about Perception: DG, will you please resurrect this ROM?

Doesn't seem to be working with perception 10.3. I'm trying to use odin to flash back to 2.1 with no luck. I know this rom is discontinued but if anyone has any advice that would be great. Thanks in advance

I've been reading and romming since Nov. 2010, but not alot of posting.
I have run mostly Design Gears roms. Currently trying Cog4.3 with Overstock kernel because of sleep death. I'm testing Cog for a friend.
I still like Perception better and prob will go back, but the last Firebird Kernel had a bug that wont allow the pc to access the external SDcard. Not really a problem for me, my work around is to use other software to access home network via wifi to move music files on to the external SD.
My question; is there another kernel that works well with perception?
I know DG has dicontinued Perception, is it also true for the FireBird kernel?
The thing I love about Perception is it has the best of everything. HSUPA, Bluetooth worked, Wired headphones worked.
Noteerception 10.4 had Firebird .9, I believe. It had a bug that killed the mic on wired headset during phone calls. Firebird 1.0 fixed the mic bug but has the Ext SD card bug.
I was told to post this here. It was posted in General but now closed.

And then there is the JS5 based perception that never saw the light of XDA Now that was a beaut, but as every other release of perception my keyboard won't vibrate.

How do you OC/UV in perception GB?
With VC not working in GB, I don't know how to OC/UV.
Please post link to instructions if they are available.
I don't mind going into the CPU clock speed files, just want to be sure I change the right files.
Thanks

In the jvb rom, do we have to flash back to stock and re odin the bootloaders all over again or can we just flash p10.1on top of the other kernel (which happens to be continuum)? Thanks.

Perception II Beta Phone goes blank after dialing
Any Idea why I am getting blank screen after dialing from dial pad but not when I choose contacts?

How do you toggle 2G/3G
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App

It seems when using dial pad you get back the screen if you move the phone (which activates the sensor). It seems that is how it is built in. No buttons work simulate movement as putting phone to ear and then back

[KERNEL] [TEST] CyanogenMod 6

A test/stock anykernel for CM6 inc is up on rom manager under the Koush section. Please test it out and let me know how it compares. I am working on tracking down some instability issues.
Having issues with built in tethering says error. Pre 9 seems to work however after toggling wifi.
Anyone else?
Used it for a day...
I'd have to say one of the biggest downfalls was that it didn't have most features within the kernel enabled. I didn't notice any immediate problems even with the stock kernel, unless what I ran into (described below) might be involved.
When trying to initially download the new kernel via ROM Manager, I was in a location where cell was -120 dBm (basically non-existent) but I had Wifi. Wifi always seemed to take forever to link up, unless I went into settings (then it'd find the AP immediately and connect). ROM Manager basically said it couldn't do anything, despite having Wifi. I don't know enough about the inner Android workings to know if that's unrelated or not.
With the new one I noticed mainly I had very few governors to work with. TBH I only spent a day with it because I couldn't stand how often I ended up having to charge it. I don't OC so that sort of thing has never been an issue - just UC
Edit -- I should mention I'm using 2.15.00.09.01 baseband and CyanogenMod-6-09202010-NIGHTLY-Inc build. Haven't tried newer dailies yet.

At the moment, I'm using Miui but wanted to note that this is the only kernel which allows Pre-9 Wifi tether to work on Miui (in my hands, King's #1 and #2 AOSP kernels gave me errors with Wifi Tether). Thanks for providing this kernel, Koush. Will give it a try with CM and see how that goes.
I had a soft reboot last night with this new kernel while I was on facebook. 0 wifi used.
Radio 2.15.00.07
Not sure if it's the kernel or just the latest nightly, but I'm loosing my data connection quite often. Otherwise, its running great.

Funny, I'm running the test2 on Ruby as well. Been rock stable for 4hours. Practically a record for my phone on Ruby. Hope it makes it through the night.
Using the "test2" kernel.
Built in tethering works for me.
I'm running the 9/27 nightly.
No other issues so far.
P.S. I would love if internal memory was mounted properly in Windows.
Does anyone know if this new kernel is underclocked?

Another question would be, does anyone know if test kernel #1 or #2 is the test kernel in rom manager?

#2 is running at default clock.
So far looking good on test#2 for me (9.26 nightly). I just had a meeting in a location where the phone has frozen up nearly every time I was running CM 6.02 or any previous build and it worked fine. If I make it out to lunch, then back home later today without a freeze I think we may have a winner. Or at least I'll have a winner...
I grabbed the test kernel on friday night via the ROM manager, am I running the latest test, or is there a new one with the same name? In other words do I have to redo it to get the test #2 I am seeing comments about?
I am running test2 and my only issue is with wifi cutting out and erroring out when running things like streaming media in the background, but no reboots. Tt just cuts out the wifi, and resumes relatively well upon turning the screen back on. For some reason the screen being off sets off a timer that cuts out the wifi after a while. I've tested this with both Pandora and Slacker. No cut outs when running over 1x CDMA (3G doesn't work in my office) except when my signal becomes nonexistant.

Yep, this looks the same to me as one of the other versions of claimed "stock JI6" that I falshed on my friend's phone via Odin. This one of course has all the apps and such, since it's just an update and not the entire OS. It only took about 3 minutes to flash this one via Kies.
Hey guys, Im a little disappointed here.
I got the JI6 Installed on my phone both from OTA, and KIES.
And ever since I bought my phone I have never gotten GPS to work correctly.
All these fixes, that we have gotten so far is enhance how your phone tracks you through wireless networks, and not one of these fixes has actually fixed the GPS it self.
Here is my dilemma, sometimes I am forced to use airplane mode, but am allowed to have GPS on, to use applications that only rely on GPS.
Well the minute I go into AIRPLANE mode with GPD on. All GPS functions go to hell since the phone can't use any wireless networks in airplane mode to track me. So I am forced to use my good ol G1 instead hehe.
My question is, has anyone else noticed having this problem? Because I am really starting to think that this is more of a hardware issue and not software. And all these new updates are made to use wireless networks more efficiantly in order to cover up the GPS fail.
I am inclined to agree with you. The Vibrant has to be the worst gps I have ever used. I will be sitting still and it has me jumping from street to street in my neighborhood jumping with Incredible Hulk like distance. It renders traking your phone through lookout useless.
I feel that smasung dropped the ball on the gps hardware and that is the root of all our issues. It seems the cut corners to save by using a bargin bin gps chip is bitting the in the ass. I also feel if the issue is in fact never rectified that it would be a great case for cals. It is sad when a phone that is this costly can not be used as a reliable gps solution.
I love this phone don't get me wrong but if I would have known of all the issues with gps and the faults of the rfs file system and lag attributed to it I would have probably went for another option. I really hope that sammy loses the RFS it is utter crap.
So, this didn't work for me. It tried to flash, said it couldn't, and now I've just got a screen with a picture of a phone, a computer, and a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark in it. Worse yet, it doesn't appear as if I can turn the phone off. Holding power makes the image go away for a bit, but then it always comes back. I have removed the battery, and when I put it back in, or plug in the USB, the image comes back. I'm going to try to use ODIN to recover, once that's done downloading.

You're bricked but don't freak out. Unless you were using Voodoo, then you kinda need.to.freak out. If you weren't using Voodoo, then you should easily.be able to recover it using ODIN. I suggest using v 1.3 because its more stable. Grab the zip file in the ODIN stock JI6 tjread
I was able to fix it. Oddly enough, I couldn't really get ODIN 1.3 to work, however, ODIN 1.0 worked just fine to restore. Neither of them really let me flash the JI6 update, though. I ended up flashing Bionix 1.8.

I'm inclined to say that it's poor quality control, not necessarily hardware. My 1st vibrant had satisfactory GPS with JFD, but had to be returned due to build quality issues. My new vibrant has rock solid build quality, but a horrible GPS. Even updated to JI6, it's completely unusable. Some phones work well, others are inoperable.
ran kies mini and installed update with no issues. didn't lose any data, but you lose root access (until you root again). my V was rooted with JI2 gps fix and adw launcher. my gps gave me ~25ft accuracy after JI2 and its the same after JI6 update.

JK3 modem, loss of all reception, drains battery, requires a reboot

So, right now I am using the Axura RC1 CE (I will update later), but I have had the problem described in the topic on various other ROMs using the JK3 modem.
It works fine for a few days (time is random, I have not been able to manually reproduce the issue), then randomly I lose all reception. Switching to flight mode fails, it gives no error, it just does nothing, in the notification bar it just says (searching). I have to reboot the phone to get the phone functioning again.
Anyone else experiencing this on ATTs network, or if there is a fix, I spent the last hour searching and going through the various threads to no avail (or I just suck at searching)..
Did you try the Axura thread?
Sent from my liberated Captivate via XDA App.
I'm having the same issue but I've tried Assonance as well and still get the random no service. Tried different i9000 modems as well--anyone know if its safe to use a captivate modem??? I'm guessing no but just want to know if anyone has tried it without borking the phone.

I'm having this same issue as well, that's why I've tried to stay away from the UGJK3 modem, however, it's seems every custom ROM is starting to use it
As far as using a captivate modem with an i9000 ROM, I've tried that also, while it didn't totally brick my phone, I did get random FCs. I've read that is a dangerous path to go down.
I feel the same way. I might try the CogKernel and see if that helps...
Please, please, PLEASE do not post these types of things in Development.

+1 Lets keep this forum area clean .. its just for development stuff guys.
I have had the same issue with all I9000 modems, the only fix that has worked for me is to enter the service menu and force WCDMA 850 Band only. Also, questions should be posted in the question forum.
[this thread is pretty relevant to development - considering the rom chefs are using this modem in their releases and it has a potential major flaw. if the mods find it better to be in Q&A, then please move it - otherwise, i think the right eyes will see it here]
yes, yes and yes!
ive been posting about it in the perception thread, but no one (save for 1 user) chimed in with the same issue.
we both noticed that we both have an issue where we will bounce from 3G to H and back fairly often. this leads me to believe that it could be part of the problem.
i just odin'ed back to stock because my phone isnt receiving incoming calls now.
what i had planned to do was flash the latest perception but use a different modem... but it seems like the only sensible modem is the JK3 (although there is word on the street a new one just leaked?). so that idea is kind of out.
someone here said they were going to try cogkernel2, but i was on setirons and cogkernel2 and it happened with both. it seems to be a modem issue.
i wanted to lock the phone to use 3G only to see if that would help, but no one shared a way how... but reading this post it seems i can do it from the service menu - though i dont know exactly what to set/change to keep it only on 3G. (any help would be great).
so i believe im going to flash perception 8 and see if i can lock it into 3g mode and go from there. this is getting pretty tiring. im hoping if a new modem releases that will help, but i honestly am not sure i can wait since it is making the phone unusable.
below are my posts from the perception thread on the issue.

i searched but did not find...
i see others have had issues with APN force closing. i do as well, but assuming that isnt a problem, i dont mind.
my issue is that after a certain period of time left asleep, my phone will completely fall off the network. changing flight and data mode dont work, nor help. a restart works. this has started a day or two ago, but was not an issue for the first week (give or take). if it is relevant, my network constantly swaps between H and 3G where i live.
i have not found a setting to force 3g (and disable hsdpa) as i figured it was the network hopping that was doing it. am i just missing that setting? anyone else with this issue? (again, i saw people with the apn force close but not complete loss of network unrelated to initial flash)
also, i think that each build should get its own thread. it is VERY difficult to find accurate information on the current build once a thread has 4 builds and 250 pages in it. even with search, it would still be a good idea.
thanks and thanks.

in relation to my post below yours, does locking the 850 band only force the phone to use only 3G, or is HSDPA/HSUPA still enabled but you found the 850 band to be more stable.
this is what my next attempt will be to get a solid platform going.
I've tried different modems other than jk3 and it doesn't fix the problem. Stinks that you've used Cogkernel2 and it doesn't help. I also tried the different band selection in service mode and it also hasn't help me (apparently this worked for some people). If you want to give it a shot do the following:
1. Dial *#0011#
2. menu button then soft back key
3. then phone control -> network control -> band selection
4. good luck!

can you confirm or deny that when you notice your phone goes completely out of service that it has been hopping between 3G and H? it would be interesting to see if we all have that issue as part of it.
also, fingers crossed for that supposed new modem.
/sigh
Yeah this really sucks because these roms are great with this one very big exception. I haven't noticed the hoping before I need to reboot. I have noticed that if I switch into airplane mode once I drop service I can't turn it off.
I had the same issues with Axura and Percetion. I found that switching my network control to WCDMA 1900 only pretty much fixed it. The only problem I had after was that any time I lost service naturally, ie, bad area, or shielded rooms, whenever I came back into a good service area I could never get a signal again. So I would have to reboot.
In the end, I'm back on Cog, 2.3b7 and no issues for about 14 hours now.

Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Runs fine on stock rom. 2.1
It runs great on the leaked Foyo ROM as well. Can you check to make sure it is on your internal SD? I tried to run the files from my external SD, and went into boot cycles. Hope that helps.
Works great for me on Cognition 2.3b7 I have the bought version and the early version that was leaked a couple of weeks ago, 1.0.4 and they both run without an issue.
Im running darky V6 with setirons kernel, and it just hits the splash screen, the music plays, one out of every 5 times I can get to car select and it crashes. I dont get a FC message or anything. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling also, and restarting the phone. The data it downloads is on my internal sd and everything. I have no idea what the issue is.
I'm with stock XXJPY and this crap is closing... I think we just were stoled...

Still not working here and EA hasnt contacted me back at all yet. Anyone get this game working yet?
Mine works just fine on perception 5, no lags, no fc's, just fun

How odd... I wonder what the issue is. I mean it starts up, then just exits. Hmmm....
same here
same issues here with 2.2.1 based roms. i could play once running Cronus.
Grab somewhere APK from Galaxy Tab - it's working for me perfectly
Beware: 120mb size...
Im wondering if it has something to do with the market. As in, because we are using the different baseband version, the market is trying to give us the copy made for snapdragon chips.
I guess to confirm this, what version of nfs shift do you all have? I think in my many wasted google searches I saw different versions for the phones that use the snapdragon chips.
It's not a market issue... It's a NFS game issue - version 1.0.56 worked, but .58 not
So I dont know if anyone was able to fix this, but I did find a version for the tab and its working great now. I can't share it on here, because I know its warez or whatever it's called, but mine works great now. I will add that I paid for the game, just had to find a copy that actually worked.
mine works fine and im running firebird 2.2 no problems whatso ever
I bought it during the sale and haven't ever gotten to play it either. I put a support request into EA, but 2 weeks later, I got a canned response (what's you phone, OS version, etc.... info that as already provided). I'm disappointed, since this was my first and so far only market purchase... I can confirm that it bombs on Xcal's and speedmod kernels, does anyone have it working with a newish rom (2.2.1)? If so, what kernel and game build are you running??
Mine works fine on phoenix, never have had a fc on this game.

What version of NFS are you using? I've got 1.5.7, someone mentioned 1.5.6 working, is that what you have?

[Q] 1st Time ROMing. Input Needed

I realize this is probably a very frequently brought up topic, but given that I have certain specific requirements, I hope it merits not being redundant.
I'm fed up waiting on Samsung to issue out 2.2 and so I have finally decided to try ROMing it. The help that I need is determining which of 3 ROMs: Darky 7.7, Cognition 9.5/9.9, and Perception 10(.1). These all seem to be top mentioned ROMs for the Captivate. I watched the comparison video between 9.5 and 10 and am more inclined to go with 10.
However, each ROM has easily around 100 pages minimum and I've lost 2 hours of sleep trying to just keep up with Perception 10 as it is trying to find out if it will still allow me to do the things I require.
What I need is the following:
GPS Working (I believe Cognition 9.9 states GPS does not work)
Bluetooth Voice Dial/Control (I have a BlueAnt T1 which I love, but I have been told that only 2.2 allows full voice control via BT - If I am wrong, please correct me)
Froyo's Wifi Hotspotting feature would also be nice.
Other than the notice about GPS issue on Cog 9.9, I couldn't find anything to clearly confirm both the GPS and BT requirements. I know Per 10 is running 2.2.1, so that is something else that appeals to me.
As always, I greatly appreciate any help I can get from XDA. As long as the winter weather doesn't take out the power, I look forward to joining the Froyo ranks later today.
EDIT: I should also throw on that minimal risk of battery problems and/or signal/call quality issues would be great as well. And that a working (or fixable) Barcode Scanner is needed. My wallet lives off of Google Shopper these days.
Well I haven't personally used Perception or Cognition. However, I am running Darky's 8.0 with hardcore's Speedmod k12i kernel, JL3 modem and DXJPA wifi, and I haven't had any issues with GPS, mobile hotspot, signal/call quality or Barcode Scanner. I also get about 3-4 days of battery life on a single charge with light usage. Your experience may differ, but I thought I'd offer up mine in case it helps.

I'm really not that familiar with Dark's ROM, but Perception and Cognition I think I know enough to tell you a bit about them. Perception is built off of the i9000 and Cognition is built from the Captivate. only problem I've had with Perception was that the i9000 modems don't seem to be fully compatible on the U.S. Captivate and you will intermittently lose signal for short periods of time, sometimes to the point where you will have to reboot. Both builds are by DesignGears and I really do like his designs. Cognition is most likely more stable and easier for a first time flasher. Again, this is said with ignorance of Darky's ROM. You can find change logs and problems within the first few posts on the first pages of official ROM threads. There you can find out all you need. Just PM the dev if you have questions and I'm sure they will be able to answer you.

I would agree with this, and I'd just like to add that I'm using Cognition 2.3b8 (not sure where you're getting 9.8/9.9 from) and it's very stable and easy for a first-time flasher.
One queston for Jmurph, with the Perception rom, would it be as simple as flashing a new modem (TLJL3 for example) which works well on AT&T?
One of the things about Darky's ROM that scared me away was that people seemed to have to mix and match kernels and modems to get one they liked. Designgears' rom seemed to work really well for most people out of the box, as it were. And I found that it's fantastic. Yesterday I decided to flash the TLJL3 modem (but I just read on the changelog that Designgears included it in 2.3b8 so it's a moot point). I've been having good battery life though I just yesterday bump charged it and deleted the battery stats. I expect battery life to get even better. I don't use Bluetooth for more than handsfree so I can't speak to that, however, I would assume that the rom would do anything that Froyo would be able to do.
In fact, on Saturday, I was able to use my phone as a wifi hotspot without any problems.

You mix and match kernels and modems on any ROM to get one you like. Modem is your connection, some might run faster than others, and lots of things can influence that. Location, available bands at your location, etc etc. Kernels are just masses of hardware drivers, so obviously different kernels fit different peoples needs. Some people like the overclock thing, some people don't. Some people want a kernel optomized for speed, some want a kernel optomized for stability or battery life. No matter what ROM you go with, some Modems might work better for you than others, and the kernel is all about preference.
Thanks everyone. I realize my mistake with the GPS part. I was accidentally referring to the Percepion 9.5 (build 99) post that said that GPS was disabled. It was late and I had come back from a jaunt in a lovely snow storm, so my brain was kinda blahhhed.
So now I'm just down to Cog vs Per. From what I skimmed last night, Perception is designed for the Captivate. In fact some guy is starting a ROM review for the Captivate with MobileTechVideos and was comparing 9.5 and 10.
I know 10 has the latest swype keyboard installed, so that is another point in its favor. Any other suggestions? Inputs?
