Ok im at my end with this, whenever I have a custom ROM on my captivate I constantly lose signal and have to reboot my phone to try to get it back, sometimes twice. The main time it does it is anytime I charge it, whenever i wake up the next morning no signal. Then sometimes it will show I have signal but It wont allow me to do anything (calls, text, or internet) So far the only ROM that I havent had any problems with is Cognition. And I have also tried numerous modems, ROM, and kernel combos, but still no luck.
Many threads have discussed this. "random signal loss on i9000 roms"
No solution or definite cause has been found afaik. Some think it has to do with the phone itself and a refurb is your only remedy other than sticking with captivate based kernels/modems/roms.
So I should only flash 897 ROMS, we need a list of which is which
The list is short. Nothing atm besides cognition which is actually a rogers rom...might be one more.
well cognition for me than. Till someone finds a fix.

Cog. 3.04 has been a great rom, I have been sticking with it and FB2 kernel, other setups make my phone do wonky things, bluetooth voice call is only issue. Be great if that gets fixed but no biggie.
Just out of curiosity what is the build # of your phone? If you look on the white label on the back of your phone (remove the battery) you should see it there.
Be interesting to see if it was a specific build or not.
Firefly is also a rogers 2.2 have you factory reset at all? Bad hardware?

Andromeda doesn't have that issue either.
Firefly and Andromeda both had the issue on my phone, which I hated cause I really wanted the themed Andromeda.

Seems to affect rev 1007 and a few others. I did a warranty exchange and got another 1007 that works with everything. Running CM7 now.

Hi, I'm currently running Perception build 9.5 on my captivate and it seems that my phone randomly loses service. I've never had that problem at home or in the city with Eclair and my family doesn't seem to have this issue either so I can only assume that the perception has to do something with it.
When I'm in this state, I try to turn on airplane mode so that I could turn it back off but I can't do that either.
What can I do to fix this phone service error? I miss calls and don't receive texts until I restart my phone!

Airplane mode doesn't work? That's weird, perception is one of those ROM's that has a pretty huge userbase so problems that come out of the woodwork usually get answered pretty fast. I would try flashing back to stock and master clearing, and see if that makes a difference.
If it doesn't, I would try flashing over other modems(modem.bin), to see if you can find one that will give you service. You can do that via ODIN or a prepackaged CWM .zip flashable. Pretty sure Perception 95 comes with JL3. If reflashing/masterclear doesn't work, try some other ones!
Well actually what ends up happening is that it freezes and then as soon as I restart the phone, it restarts as airplane mode. It's pretty annoying. I will try first restoring 2.1 and then whos knows what

So I tried to restore my old samsung 2.1 onto my phone but it is stuck at the "DesignGears" Logo at the very beginning. I've tried restarting using the power and volume buttons and restoring again using the same image that I used but to no avail. I've tried to press the factory restore button on clockwork but didn't work either. I can't even get it to load all the way! What can i do?
Not knowing the details of exactly how you flashed your rom, it's hard to say exactly what could be wrong. From the sounds of it, though, something got corrupted in the process.
I had something similar happen the one time I tried to upgrade without taking everything back to JF6. My suggestion is to back up what you can, start over from scratch, and reinstall 9.5.
When you start that process, drop back to JF6 with Odin, then do a Master Clear, and only then install Perception 9.5. Going that route, you shouldn't have any problems.
Ad for your failed 2.1 restore, I'm guessing that you're talking about a nandroid backup? If so, it doesn't back up the kernel or the modem. You'll have to use some other means to get those reinstalled. I'd again suggest using the Odin 1-click to drop the original rom on the phone, then performing the nandroid restore from there.
thanks so much guys!
I did that as you said and used Odin 1-click to restore my phone and have installed 9.5. Hopefully this will conclude the thread. I will let you guys know by tomorrow. I really appreciate both comments and wish you guys happy holidays!

Actually, yea. Nothing has changed. My phone still loses signal every hour or so probably because of the switches. I wonder if we can contact a dev about somethin like this?

Most of the Devs that use i9000 or Vibrant ROMs for their base are aware of the problem. At this point seems there is nothing we can do though. I keep flashing things like Perception and Phoenix thinking one day it will work, but it never does. The only stable build for signal are Captivate based, ie, stock or Cognition.
Ok before I go into my question I want to tell you that I've tried a lot of different roms, and tried changing a lot of settings for the GPS.
My best performance was when it took me about a minute to get accurate to 50 meters but my GPS never locks on me. It doesn't even lock on me when I'm just walking on the street.. This made me really frustrated. And btw I can't return it and get a new phone...
Anyway I was looking through and found a thread saying that you should scratch the part where your battery meets the phone(the two small gold part).
I can't seem to find this thread again so I was wondering if anyone had a
Step by step tutorial or screenshots or a video. Please help..

before you go scratching your phone, maybe try to get it working again... mine used to never lock either but it finally works now after changing roms, modems, and gps files.... if you cant get a lock with no case on it, and the battery cover removed, its most likely software... did it work stock?
can u post specific info? what rom, modem, gps files, and gps server are you using? people have different results with different combos, and it took me forever to get mine to lock so i'll try to help, i don't want you to damage your phone trying to get it to work...
Register your phone at samsung.com and then open a ticket and send it in for repair.

might as well do the registration with samsung to have it repaired or replaced.... or take it by an att service center after flashing stock... theyll replace it on the spot for u... but most likely with a refurb... sorry u got a lemon man... id take it by the retail store first and see if you can get a new one... bring everything with you... but theyll most likely refer you to the service center...

i try em all but i always go back to darkys
All, having a weird issue. I was on the phone yesterday using an automated menu system and my phone restarted. No rhyme nor reason why. It did that repeatedly throughout the day. I tried flashing a new ROM version, Phoenix 6.0!!, with no luck. I tried a normal restart, power down and then up, running a virus scan, pulling the batter for 30 minutes and no difference. The phone continued to restart. I finally got fed up and my battery was almost dead so I turned the phone off.
The phone was off for probably 5 hours and I charged it while off. I restarted the phone and transferred all of my content off, expecting to Odin back to stock and reflash Phoenix. The phone seemed to be behaving so I left it alone and plugged it into the wall for the night.
I got up this morning and everything appeared to be good. Went to work and still no problems, phone had an uptime of over 12 hours. Which would be what I would expect. Had the phone on my desk and I noticed it had restarted. When I mean it restarted, it went back to the boot animation and then loaded to the android screen and performed media scan and all my apps loaded on the home screens and services started up.
I went back to Settings->About->Status and the uptime was 18 hours now. So even with the restart, the uptime was still counting. Needless to say, I'm at a lose. Can't isolate any event that causes this reset or any app. Could I have gotten something from the automated call system? Is something just weird. I had been running Phoenix 5.2 for a few weeks with now problems so I'm confused. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I will probably flash back to stock and start again but I'd like to isolate this problem if possible.
To the best of your knowledge, no apps were just added, our settings adjusted?
Either way I would odin flash master clear. May even run stock for a but to see if behavior stops

sounds like a problem with the infamous 850-1900mhz handoff....
if your signature is accurate, that modem you are using is 1900mhz only i believe....it doesnt support 850, so if you are in an area where its trying to hand off to 850, it will cause a soft reboot.....i have seen it a million times myself when playing with the first run of i9000 roms

Hmmm...I have been using an i9000 roms for a few months with no issues. The last modem I was using was I9000UJK4, I think? I don't know without flashing back, whatever came with Phoenix 5.2 ROM. I had zero problems. I only flashed to that modem/ROM, Phoenix 6.0, in an attempt to fix the soft reboot.
flash just the JK4 modem and i bet the soft reboots stop. what you have listed there is i believe a 1900mhz only modem....

I will try that, when I can find it to download but the problem started with the JK4 modem. I was running Phoenix 5.2 with a JK4 modem and only flashed to the new one in an attempt to wipe whatever was causing the data.
Flashing UGJK4 right now, I'll see if that fixes anything however I'm not super confident since the problem occurred originally with a JK4 modem.
Update: Rebooted once after modem flash. Going to wait for a bit and see what happens.
if that doesnt work, i would think its a problem with your hardware

If the modem switch doesn't work, I'm first going to flash to stock and master clear. If the problem goes away, I'll flash to Phoenix again. If the problem comes back, it'll have to be part of my SW. If the problem persists at stock, back to AT&T for a refurbished phone.
Update: Looks like things are pretty stable right now. I'm not super in-tune with how the modems work but is there a way to allow the JK4 modem to use 850 or 1900 speeds, like an auto setting that will choose the best one. I use SGS tools for secret codes so if its in there let me know. So far so good, thanks pirate.
Reviving an old thread because I am also having soft reboot issues.
Unlike the previous poster, I am not using an i9000 based kernel. I am running the latest leaked Gingerbread for the i897 (JK3), rooted via Fugu kernel swap method; the only other tweak to stock has been to freeze via TiBu the AT&T Tethering Manager. I am even using the stock launcher as I try to isolate what is causing this.
The phone goes through spells where it will soft reboot every 10 minutes or less, and then periods where it will go days where it is stable. I have had this issue with multiple versions of the 2.3.3 and 2.3.5 leaks and am nearing wits end figuring out the cause.
Before each flash (and I have flashed multiple times with different stock leaks) I am wiping data and cache via recovery (I do not have CWM installed), then restoring apps only via TiBu. I have tried to be judicious about what I reinstall, but have not been able to identify if there is a misbehaving one yet.
I suspect this is software and not hardware, since I had this problem on my first Cap and have already done one warranty exchange; the external SD card, though, is the same for both.
I've looked for kernel panic logs and have not seen any, and have yet to find a good way to trap what is causing this.
This is my work issued phone (does Exchange sync and has company policies sent to it), so I am loathe to go all the way to a custom ROM, even though I realize that I voided the warranty when I rooted and went to leaked ROMs.
Anyone have an ideas as to what could be causing this, how I can isolate the problem, and hopefully resolve it once and for all? Worst case, I could go back to Froyo until AT&T finally drops the promised Gingerbread update, but I had different issues with Froyo with Market updates not always finishing and apps on the SD card not always being recognized.

Hi, Wolf how did you get a 1106? Did you set up an exchange over the phone or did you go into a at&t device center? I just setup an exchange of my 1007 that I got on launch day in hopes of a better GPS. I thought I would try it out before my 1 year warranty was up. I was hoping to get the newest hardware rev. but your experience sounds bad.

I went to the local AT&T store and tried to explain to them the GPS issues I was having. They ended up getting hung up on AT&T Navigator trying to tell me to use that to get my GPS to work. Eventually they set me up to call the AT&T warranty department. Then the Warranty Department told me that kept thinking it was a software issue and wouldn't honor the warrant and told me to call Samsung. Called Samsung and they told me to call AT&T, then I had the store manager talk to Samsung themselves and eventually it got worked out that I was able to to an in-store trade out. And I got the 1106.
So if anyone wants me to create a back up / pull the firmware from my phone I'm going to need assistance, as I've never done that before. The KB2 Rom maybe more stable on another device.
Edit 1: Also, on this build the colors seem to be a little off. Maybe a little warmer than normal.
Edit 2: Just rooted and made a backup so I can start flashing this thing. If anyone wants the FW the offer still stands until Monday at 6PM eastern time. After that I probably won't have time to pull it for a while.
^ Dang, wish I could help, but I don't have the know-how.
Sure hope someone offers up. I really would like to test that KB2 modem out.
unknown sources enabled perhaps ?

That's something you should have tested before you left the store.
I just returned my 1007 via the phone and received a 1012. That phone's GPS didn't work either so I went to the repair center (40 minutes away) and exchanged it again.
I made them confirm the GPS would lock in under 10 seconds on the first phone they brought out, another 1012. It did not so I asked if they had any newer builds...the guy brought out a 1102 and it grabs a lock and holds it.
The 1102 also had the UCKB2 kernal which has the signed bootloaded which must be cracked before customer roms will work. Annoying, but there are easy workaround to it posted here already.
UCKB1 official Froyo build is horrible in many aspects. UCKB2 is probably just some bug fixes. I'd skip all AT&T Froyo build to the UCKF1 Gingerbread ROM. So far it is a much better 'official' ROM than any official Froyo ROM. If the rumor is correct, GB ROM will be released in the middle of July, I'd bet this UCKF1 is the final build.
Interesting. I exchanged mine last week. GPS didn't work, search button pressed itself sometimes etc. Got one with great GPS, but didn't notice when dim the screen was yellow. Had to go back and got an 1102. Didn't check version but right now I'm on cog 5 beta 3 and got there with no problems.
I just went and exchanged my phone again. This time I got a 1106 with KB2 and perfect GPS. I got 10/0 (visible/in-use) satellites inside the AT&T store. As soon as I went outside I got 10/10. Inside this old gov't building I'm seeing 6/0 in the center of the room but close to the window I get 7/5. Never out of all my Captivates, this being my fourth, have I seen such good GPS.
I also made it a point to show the difference in GPS ability compared to my old phone, my new one, and the display units to the store manager so he couldn't try to BS me.
I got my 1105, and it had UCKB2 on it as well. The GPS was terrible. Call quality was great, though. So far, I've been using the KC1 modem, and GPS lock is fast and stable, but call quality suffers at two bars and less.
I never knew that the GPS issues could be related to hardware problems, but it makes sense. I can put my wife's BB Torch next to my Cappy and she has -65dBm and mine has -95dBm. I've burned through about all the modems thinking it was software related and now I'm wondering if my phone has other issues. I can see a dB or two difference simply due to different antenna configurations, but a 30dBm difference is huge (the scale is logarithmic).
Just thought that I would add to this thread. I just got home from the Warranty Center with two replacement Captivates both with UCKB2 on them. Haven't had much time to fool around with anything yet though to confirm GPS or bug fixes.

GPS is the best ever on my new 1012 UCKB2
I had a 1007 before and the GPS with various fixes was "OK" - much better than my wife's 1007 with the same config. However, I swapped it out yesterday and got a 1012 with UCKB2 and the GPS works perfectly. I actually wondered if I should stick with stock (a horrible thought) since I didn't want to screw up good GPS and then not be able to get KB2 back. It took quite a few tries to root it - SuperOneclick 1.95 worked after failures with One-click, SuperOneClick V2 beta and 1.7.
I will flash GB regardless - Continuum Platinum when it hits GA. However, IF by some chance I want to revert, flashing a 2.2 firmware ROM and then restoring a nandroid backup should get everything but the kernel and modem. Is there any way to get those back? I haven't tried yet but apparently KIES only installs KB1 from what I read.
I honestly don't understand why you didn't just one-click back to JF6 and install CWM and flash from there. You over complicated it I saw your post in the old JI6 2.2 thread. None of that was needed.
Sent from my Captivate
When I told at&t about the gps issues on my cappy and you know what he told me? He said most smart phones even his htc aria has gps behavior which is normal. I told him about that the gps tend to jump around time to time and doesn't stay at one location. I don't believe what he says and can't issue an warranty exchange before the time is up.
I just exchanged a 1007 Captivate that was having all sorts of issues (gps, phantom search button click, random shutdown) via warranty. I received a 1008 batch phone.
First impressions were that GPS wasn't great, but phone signal was fantastic. Overall ran smooth. After figuring out how to install alternate recovery 3e, I backed up with CWM and one-click flashed to JF6 to do some test restores.
Once in eclair I decided to try restoring back to UCKB2. Whoops! Suddenly I didn't have button recovery or download modes, and was stuck in a boot loop (with recovery 2e). Not cool -- built a jig and flashed Andromeda3.
Now that I'm running voodoo lagfix ext4 again, I'm noticing some high CPU usage from kswapd0 that drains the battery. I don't think this was occurring in UCKB2 froyo and would like to flash back to do some comparison.
Is there some trick to restoring the UCKB2 ROM or should I just try again? (obviously after disabling the lagfix.) Not looking forward to another soft brick if I run into difficulty...

I tried to search but alas Tapatalk isn't very good at that.
I bought a Captivate via eBay. Before I press to return it, is there a fix or ROM that fixes the dreaded random shutoffs? I tried resets and the GB Serenity ROM but alas I'm still encountering it...rather frequently. Every hour or less it'll shut off. So, other than the battery draining Captivate Keep Alive app...is there a real solution?
barring anything physical with your phone .. I have not had any sleep deaths or random reboots since switching to Fusion-CM-ICS-beta. It used to be a chronic issue with my phone.
Thanks for the fast reply Garyth. I'll give it a go.
I've heard the aosp roms seem to help the problem (this includes the ICS roms). They use different drivers than Samsung roms.
So far, so good. Data is consistently faster as well. Thanks again!
Hmm. Still getting random yet pervasive shut downs.
I believe this was a known hardware issue as well. There is a thread around somewhere will effected build numbers.
I saw that thread and don't believe mine is in the range. I'll be calling the seller tomorrow anyway.
Not sure if you are in the same boat as me, since the IMEI of my phone does fall into that catergory of the "recalled" phones, but since it was out of warranty by the time I saw that post, they wouldn't exchange it at the store.
At any rate, here's what I've gone thru:
Back in the Froyo times, I "think" CM7 fixed the issue, but I was too fidgety at the time so I was always trying new roms so I don't remember 100% if that was true or not.
I read somewhere that this could be caused by the battery shifting around due to temp changes as it charge/discharges, and that you should put some electrical tape or whatever to make sure your batt. made good contact. Didn't work for me at all.
So finally what fixed the problem was Captivate Keep Alive app, it's in the market.
First I tried it with two ICS roms: ICSSGS and Fusion, with Platypus and IcyGlitch kernels. The app work fine with a setting of 85%, but I was getting "charge death" as well, which I've never had before.
So now I've rolled back to KK4 (Serenity ROM) with the latest Corn kernel, and for some reason I have to set the app to 80% charge but works.
There'll be definitely an increase in battery drain, but for me it hasn't been that bad.
I used to have that problem when I first got my cappy, had froyo KB1 on it, and it would randomly shut down. Eventually when I got into hacking the android, when I finally updated to newer bootloaders, the problem went away. Though I can't recommend flashing bootloaders, since you can hard brick your phone if unsuccessful. Just saying that's what seemed to solve the problem for me.

I tried Captivate Keep Alive. Even it didn't work. A replacement phone is on its way. The IMEI was actually affected, but I didn't realize at first because I only looked at the last digits. Apparently was a really early build. The seller photographed the new IMEI before shipping it out so I could verify.
