[Q] Persistent wifi? - Nook Color General

I was wondering if anyone saw some mod or setting that allowed the wifi to be persistent even when the display is off. It looks like the wifi turns off after the screen sleeps for a little bit.
It would be nice to get email notifications without the display being on.

The app softlocker does what you need.

I use an app from Market called Wi-Fi Keep Alive. Free, works great.

Wi-FI Keep Alive here work perfect .

None of these work with my rooted with the wpa_supplicant fixed to allow connecting to ad-hoc.

If you are rooted just go to the wifi settings and click on the menu button go to advanced then wifi sleep policy then select never. Hope this helps.

Sounds great, unfortunately no such advanced wi-fi menu that I can find. Anyone get wi-fi to stay on with the wpa_supplicant ad-hoc fix in?

[Q] Mobile Data stays on with Wifi

Anybody else experiencing this.. Wifi is on and connected but my 4G-LTE arrows are still showing and flashing as if it was transmitting and receiving.. but my Wifi is on??
I am using Launcher Pro instead of LG Home so I have access to the power widget in the Notification Bar but not the LG Home power controller.
I just installed Power Control Plus and it seems to shut off LTE and 3G when you press the 3G button and can keep it off with or without Wifi on.
I've noticed this. It doesn't bother me due to the fact that I have unlimited data. If it want for that it would bug the **** out of me.

As far as I know, on all the android phones I've had, u have to manually shut off mobile data even when connected to wifi. There are apps that include this option when making "profiles" that get triggered (tasker, CPU tuner) but otherwise I think it stays on unless manually turned off. Maybe its not using mobile data but it appears to stay "on".

I have the same issue. It actually goes further, because when I manually turn off mobile data through the Settings menu the data icon still stays on. If I use a tool like Dataswitch the icon goes away, but I never had to do that with any of my other phones.
The other issue with wifi that I'm having is that if I set the Wifi sleep policy to turn off after 15 mins of inactivity it can't reconnect after it turns itself off. So when I start using the phone again it just keeps trying to obtain the IP address of the network without ever succeeding. I've tried this on multiple networks. I have to turn off wifi and then turn it back on. Anybody experience this?
These issues aren't big but they're starting to make me question the quality of the LG Revolution and I may exchange it for the Charge.

I have this issue too, and it is annoying. I'm not worried about exchanging it, because I'm sure this will be addressed in the port of CM7 that TheCubed is working on.

Do issues like these usually get fixed in a port of CM7? Do you think the issue of mobile data staying on when it should be off will get addressed as well?
Any idea when CM7 for the Revolution will be available?

Wifi Issues

Has anyone else had issues with wifi not staying off? I normally turn wifi off when I leave the house to go to work. But when I get to work I will notice when I unlock my phone that I have a pop up asking me if I want to connect to the office wifi network. I go into setting and wifi has spontaneously turned itself on. I will turn it off again but the same thing usually happens the next time I unlock my phone and open the browser. Then just now, I unlocked the phone and opened the browser and the wifi network notification popped up again, but this time I went into settings and and it says the wifi is still off. I am starting to wonder if my D4 is just screwing with me now for the fun of it. Anyone else had any issues like this?

I looked into setting them up at one time and got a warning saying some of the functionality of that app required wifi being on.

That's actually a setting on the phone, where it will ask you if you would like to connect to wifi anytime an application requires a data connection. It's just to prevent you from going over your data plan. Go to your Wi-Fi settings and uncheck the "Notify Me" option under Wi-Fi autostart reminders.

i dont like this either because every other phone ive had that hides 3g 4g the wifi goes in the place of it but thats the only thing so far ive found that i dont like
2 from me,
1. Battery life is tough. I must have this phone charging whenever I am at my desk or It will be dead by 8pm. I would consider myself to be a power user. I'm coming from an Atrix 2 and would make it through the day with only charging in the car dock.
2. No true gps toggle. I use the toggle switchs all the time, all others work but GPS.
Otherwise I love the phone it's very quick and I'm loving ICS

The only problem I've had was with the screen sensitivity. It's no longer a problem. I fixed it with a Moshi Screen protector.
It's thick enough to balance out the touch screen and it covers up all the Logos on the phone.
Juice Defender can also cause wacky wifi performance issues. You can adjust the custom settings in Juice Defender to leave wifi alone.
Smart Actions hasn't caused any problems with waking up any of the radios or wifi.
Wifi works best if you disable anything that has to do with automatically connecting.
When you connect to your wireless point, just click "remember" when it asks you to save settings. That way it should connect/reconnect faster when you are within range because it's not scanning. It'll just connect.
Anyways, from a security stand point you do not want it to automatically connect to any open network. Wireless SSID can be spoofed with a name change, and connecting to open networks is asking for someone to record your activity, or even launch SSL strip to fish out information on the secure sites you visit. Packet sniffing at a Starbucks free WiFi is easier than using 'One-Click-Root.'
So just avoid open networks and disable anything to do with auto connecting. It'll speed up waking up WiFi and it'll make you much more secure.
If you still have wifi issues just toggle airplane mode on and off.

There's 8GB of space; how did 2 apps fill that? Go into setting>Storage and see what's really eating up your internal storage. I found that the camera by default saves pics/vids to the SDCard and I would bet that's what's killing your space. If so you can change the setting in the camera app and use the "Manage Internal Storage" to move over pics/vids that are currently on internal storage.
I've not had any wifi issues.
Having had this only 2 days, the only problem I've noticed is that there is noise when listening to music. Specifically using the standard Apple earphones and listening to Pandora. I also tried some other cheapo earphones and the same thing. I tried both earphones on my old 3g ipod and it was crystal clear. But this is really a nit-picky thing and I can only hear it on the lowest volume setting.
I get this notification asking for what keyboard input I want to use sometimes when I have the keyboard opened. I click it and it asks me what keyboard input I want to use. I have never installed any other keyboards and this has been happening ever since I got my phone a few days aho

[Q] Location-based Wi-Fi

Hi there,
On my TX, I noticed this setting and it sounds handy, but I am not sure that when I have it enabled in the Settings, that I should also have my WiFi (in the "main settings" page) On or Off? It sounds like a stupid question, isn't it? Well, I mean if Location-Based WiFi setting turns WiFi on or off automatically, then does it still turn on even if I have WiFi turned off (and no WiFi logo showing in notifications?
In other words, I can see that Location-Based WiFi is on (in notification bar) whether or not WiFi is on or off. So that does that mean it is independent of the WiFi setting?
Thx in advance
Ken

Good question, I'm intrigued too! I believe the way to do it is to have WiFi on when you activate it, but after that I am not sure. Google search should help, you could also see if there is any info on Sony website.
If you work it out, please share your info here!

Hi there,
Sorry but to clarify, do you mean it doesn't matter if your WiFi is on or off or not - the Location-Based setting overrides it? There is no visual indication of whether or not your WiFi has been turned on or not by the Location-Based setting.
Thanks,
Ken

Hi, if you have activated location based WiFi, you will see an icon that location based WiFi is active, and when you are near a location you have activated with location based WiFi you will see the WiFi icon in your taskbar.
The normal WiFi icon still applies. If you are at a location you will see the WiFi icon, if you are not you won't see it.
You can enable WiFi if you are not at a programmed location, but of you are at a programmed location it will always try too keep WiFi on, thus enabling it again if you intentionally turn it off.

Yes, you're right. When I have the Location Wi-Fi icon on the left of the notification bar showing, the other main WiFi icon will switch on or off by itself, depending if you near one of your listed WiFi connections. Awesome.
So in other words, it doesn't matter if you turn WiFi on or off or not, it will turn on/off by itself if you have Location Based WiFi on. I assume the first step I guess, would have been to turn it on, as you have to register one of your WiFi networks anyways.
Thanks again for the posts.
Regards
I use location based WiFi in conjunction with Juice Defender.
That way, JD keeps the WiFi off when my phone is sleeping but it gets turned on when I turn my screen on and am near a home network!
Yesterday I didn't use my phone all day apart from 2 very short phone calls and was at 89% battery life when I went to bed! This is very unusual as I'm always on my phone so really surprised me!

Wifi does not auto-connect when screen is off

I have a wifi issue that is a little different from other I have read here.
Issue: When my phone screen is off, it will NOT auto-connect to saved Wifi hotspots (eg, home, office) within range, until I wake up the phone (turn on the screen).
When it is connected to the Wifi hotspot, it will keep the connections even when the screen is off. (non issue)
I have set "Keep Wifi on during Sleep" to Always, and set "Sleep mode" to off. "Power Saver" is off too. Mobile data is off (I turn it on only when I need it). I checked battery usage, and Wifi is constantly on, just that it does not connected to the saved Wifi.
My question/issue is, is it normal for the One to not auto-connect to saved Wifi hotspots within range when the screen is off?
On my old HTC EVO 3D running ICS, it will automatically connect to the same hotspots without the need to wake up the phone (turn on the screen).
My One is still using the stock Rogers firmware (1.29.631.4)
UPDATE: I found that this appears to happen only when the screen has been off for a longer time (more than a couple hours). If I have waken the screen up an hour before it entered the saved wifi range, then it seems to auto-connect fine. Need more testings.

I do believe it is normal. It's to conserve power your phone would have to have a wakelock to connect to another network draining power. As I understand it the ONE puts the wifi into a power saving mode when it's not connected so it's not constantly draining your power while driving. Once you wake the screen it will then connect as it assumes you want it.

Don't think so. The wifi sleep would turn the wifi radio off which isn't happening. Oh quick thought check the network and make sure the phone is set to auto connect that would do it for sure!

So if I don't wake my screen, I will never get any sync when the screen is off and I just get back into wifi range?

As I have indicated in my first post, this has been set to "Always" already. Are you sure that works for you?
What is the phone not doing that you want it to do? Just turn on auto sync if you want your email and FB updates to be waiting for you. Or is that not working?
Quick test. Put your phone to sleep with gmail autosync push mail on. Turn off data and only enable WiFi. Then send yourself an email from a computer, if you get a notification on your phone while it is sleeping, then it is working. Or you can place a voip call with viber or send yourself a viber text from another phone.

It is not auto connecting to the saved Wifi networks when I go to work, or when I go home, with the screen off. I have to wake the phone (press the power button) and you can see that it will connect to the saved Wifi networks. The FB notifications and Whatsapp notifications are pushed, so they don't require auto-sync to be on.

If my phone is already connected to the Wifi networks, putting it to sleep will NOT disconnect it from the Wifi network. It only happens when I changed from one saved network to another (home to work, or work to home) with the screen off, then it will not auto-connect. I have tested that and I'm not getting the notification in that situations. I have to wake the phone up to trigger the auto-connect.

Is your wifi toggle always on? Or do you turn it off once you leave a certain network? The only way the device will auto connect to a saved network, is if the wifi toggle is already turned on before you go near a saved wifi network.
If you want a saved network to automatically turn on wifi and connect to a saved network, you will need some thing like juice defender. It teaches itself to know when you're near a saved wifi network and it will automatically turn on your wifi toggle on and connect to the saved network. Then once you leave the area or lock your device, it will automatically toggle off wifi and disconnect from the wifi network.

Not sure what you mean by "wifi toggle always on". My Wifi (under setting) on the phone is always on. I never turned it off. Under Power History, I can also see that Wifi is always on (un-interrupted blue bar).
I contacted HTC support, and they asked me to change the WiFi band frequency from "Auto" to "2.4GHz" and reboot the phone. It seems to have fixed the problem so far (after a couple days of testing). Although it would have been nice if they can fixed the problem properly.

Yeah, I just got the One almost a month ago and seriously thinking of returning it because of this issue. I wish I wouldn't have rooted it because since I did for some reason I can't get ADB to recognize my device. I've tried everything my noob brain can think of to fix it and the wifi issue but nothing works. I see that no other developers have a fix either as no apps or threads here give a solid solution.
I might give AT&T the money to warranty it and just get another device but I want that to be my last resort.
Personally, I think it might be an isolated hardware defect that was addressed with later devices which is why it is not as wide spread and therefore doesn't generate a need to find a workable solution.

BTW I've flashed several of the popular roms on XDA to see if that fixed it including Viper and CM but to no avail...

Not sure if I have been using the phone more, or if I have flash new radio (Radio from 2.17 base - 4A.16.3250.24_10.38.1150.03L (flashable Zip) and rom (ARHD), I don't think I have this problem any more.

No, I believe you have to be S-Off to do that, or else you need to flash the firmware. Have you trying reinstalling drivers or try on another computer to get ADB to recognise your phone?
