[Q] Newbie needs some help - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all
I have had my nexus one for quite a while now and when i bought it the bootloader had already been unlocked, but it had not been rooted yet. The problem I am having is the lack of space the nexus one has for installing apps as apps2sd is dependent on the developers.
So after some research i have found an app called 'ModInstallLocation' which tells me i can install apps to my sd card but it needs the phone to be rooted. Is this correct?
This is where i need some help. I hear all this talk about rooted phones and custom roms and i understand the idea behind it but have no technical knowledge to do this.
At this time i am happy with the stock version of android i have on my nexus (2.2.2 FRG83G) its just the lack of space i have to install apps that's forcing me down this road. I am sure there are many other advantages to rooting and i hope to discover them in time.
Could someone please give a helping hand and point me in the right direction for an idiots guide. I am a bit scared of bricking my phone tho, never endeavored on anything like this before.
Many thanks
JW

thanks you for your response, think that explains how to proceed.
couple more questions if you could help.
1. Do i have to install a custom rom after i root?
2. As i have not got much experiance in this field should i wait for the OTA update to gingerbread before i root?
many thanks
JW

1. No, if you're ok with stock ROM - you can stay with it.
2. Not really, depends mostly on what you're looking for. Gingerbread will still land on your phone (and unroot you), as long as you're using stock ROM and recovery.

a little nervous to rrot

First of all I'd like to apologize because I'm sure this has been covered already but I just feel more comfortable asking myself.
I have had my g1 for a couple of months now and I'm starting to get all itchy for root for all the obvious reasons. I hoping someone can answer some questions or point me in the right direction.
I have ota CRB43 build on my phone. I see LOTS of different instructions for rooting.. I'm wondering what one I should go by. I also notice some people say to take out the SD card instead of mounting to prevent possibly bricking your phone... should I do that or is it better to mount with the usb? And after following whatever instructions is there anything else necessary to do?
I was also interested in what themes people are using. Can I jump right into that after rooting or is there something else I will need to do. Any links for themes you are using would be great also.
Thanks so much… I really appreciate it.. Thought I had more questions.. If I remember anything else I’ll update.
I used Gizmodo's guide - very simple and clear.
http://gizmodo.com/5146797/how-to-hack-android-for-multitouch-web-browsing-on-the-t+mobile-g1
If you follow it step-by-step you'll wind up with an old build, but you'll have root and be ready to step up to any new build. New builds are easy once you've rooted - rename to update.zip and flash using recovery (explained in the guide above).
You'll also want to get the newest radio (after rooting per directions above) - Download the ota-radio-2_22_19_26I.zip file from http://www.htc.com/www/support/android/adp.html#s3 -- Rename to update.zip and flash as usual.
And I had absolutely no problems mounting the SD Card via the phone itself. Just make sure you cleanly eject the card from your PC every time, to avoid corruption.
And let me suggest CyanogenMod for your build.. Simply the fastest and most stable Android build out there - "official" firmware included.
Thanks a lot for your response! It was helpful and I checked out your link.. I was looking at -
http://androidsocialmedia.com/root-access/android-g1-root-access-why-how
originally, but I think they look similar. Thanks for the radio info as well.. anything else besides that I'll need to update?
let me ask one more thing- what's the difference between CyanogenMod and the others available?
thanks again for your help!

Well, I did skip the SPL - Some ROMS require a different SPL (Secondary Program Loader/Launcher, I think..) to free up additional space on the device. Mostly the Hero based ROMs. I haven't touched any of those, need someone else to help there.

Cyanogen is tweaking the heck out of Android - endlessly enhancing it for performance and stability. Cyanogen has a few visual tweaks but mostly it looks like stock Android with all the improvements under the hood.
The other builds.. Mostly visual, in my opinion. They all have fans though, check out the threads under Development for more details. Also, the Android ROM Database - http://www.simonwalkerphotos.com/android/android_build_information.asp
Dude, thanks so much for all this info.. http://www.simonwalkerphotos.com/and...nformation.asp was really helpful.
last question I'm gonna ask.. if i hard reset do is it going to unroot my phone?
Again.. you were really helpful! I appreciate it so much!
Nope it will not unroot you're phone
No, you'll just go back to a fresh version of whatever ROM you have installed. However, some ROMs (Like Cyanogen) put some apps in the /data folder, so a wipe could break the ROM. Typically it is better to flash after a wipe. But you won't loose root either way.
Only way I know how to loose root is to flash a none rooted ROM.
The only thing I would do is avoid the DangerSPL until you either need it or know what you are doing. Otherwise its pretty much hard to brick your phone unless your trying to with a low battery.
I'd just like to take a second to thank everyone for their help, especially Saiboogu. Like I said in the first post, I'm sure this stuff was covered somewhere but this really made me feel a bit more confident. Thanks for not flaming me... I'm actually a bit surprised at the friendly responses... again thanks everyone.
Most likely I'll be able to get around to rooting on monday or tuesday.. I'll post updates just for the fun of it.
Take it easy guys
Lol well you posted it in the right section. Of course you are going to get help
What alritewhadeva said .. You ask in the right place, we'll help. You're off to a good start.

[Q] Newb question: N1 rooting, etc 101?

Hi all,
I have owned the nexus one for about 8 months now but have never thought seriously about rooting. You know, voiding the warranty, bricking the phone, etc. And i really saw no big upsides vs risks at the time.
But now, supposedly the N1 can be rooted extremely easily (one click) and without the warranty (not unlocking bootloader) voiding? So I'm pretty new to everything involving hacking; ROMs, Morphs, Radio Updates, etc. All I know how to do is install APKs and simple manual updates following fool-proof guides (installing Froyo).
I was just wondering if there is any easy guide/wiki(s) that I can read up on to understand all this before I actually root and apply themes, ROMs, radios etc.
Thx All in Advance
I waited 3 months before rooting. All I can say is just do it. The phone is a million times better, more fun, more capable, when rooted. Just read around the forums for what's going on that can be done when rooted.
yea I have browsed around ROMs and morphs and a lot of stuff looks great. I am just looking for a GUIDE on how everything works together.
thx
Look in the Wiki.
I understand what you're looking for. I was lost for months before rooting and wanted a simple guide. My only advice is root first using the very detailed guide on rooting. Then each hack, or morph/theme, or overclock, or addition has It's own thread with directions in the first post for each individual one.
There's no full guide other than the rooting one. So you have to just read, read and read some more to see how it all works together.
For a newbie, the best way to get started is root, install ROM manager which gets you on any custom ROM super easily. Then install metamorph so you can add your theme you want. Those are the main basics that everyone does and wants.

Hi and welcome, pretty new myself....
Basically, as i understand it, rooting is a form of unlocking edit access to the phones operating system files. doing that wont stop you getting updates.
what version of the firmware are you running at present? some do run slower than others, im personally on JPU (2.2.1 update) which isnt an official release as yet but can be flashed using Odin (a thrid party app which manually updates the firmware)
Its running froyo 2.2 and does rooting it make it faster also thanks for the welcome
Rooting alone wont make it faster, to help increase the speed you would need to install a "lagfix" or a custom ROM (a tweaked firmware made by one of the developers on here)
please type *#1234# on your handset, and post the info that this displays
as an example mine show
PDA:i9000xxjpu
PHONE:i9000xxjpu
CSC:i9000xajpu
build info: 2010.12
Will tht quicklag work even tho the fone isn't rooted
pda: I9000adjp5
Phone: I9000adjp3
Csc: I9000O2ujp3
Rooting means you get access to the Admin account on your phone Administrator account on your Windows/Mac box. It allows you to run and do things that is usually locked to everyday user as it might make system unstable or worst. People root their phones so they can install things to hopfully make phone run better or differently (ie Roms)
All in all I have yet to do much damage with root access but I feel I know what I'm doing but normal everyday mom and pops won't need root and would lead them into more trouble then its worth
for me the biggest advantage of rooting is the ability to use titanium backup to remove all the bloatware.
Once all the samsung/bell apps are removed, the phone gets much faster.
last time I did a lagfix my phone lasted a few days before bricking, so I'm not keen on doing that anymore.
Another thing I noticed is that my phone was really slow right after flashing froyo, but after a couple days and a few reboots, everything sorted itself out.
So will it be worth rooting my fone then because the slowness is really starting to annoy me and how do I go aboot rooting my sgs

Where do we stand....?

Right guys, new to the phone and forum, not ROMs and flashing as I have moved from a Symbian operated Samsung, but new to the whole rooting and S-OFF stuff. Had a real good look around the forum, but can someone just tell me whether or not we can root and/or S-OFF the IS Seem to be getting conflicting info. Keen to get onto Gingerbread. If this can be done is there a definitive step-by-step guide? Tried the superoneclick method last night, but at 2am decided to give up!

The first step is to S-OFF the phone using AlphaRevX. There are several threads detailing the steps needed. Depending on which carrier ROM you currently have installed, you may need to create a goldcard so that you can flash a 'support' ROM that works with AlphaRevX.
After you gain S-OFF and the fact that you want to run a GB ROM, you will need to flash a custom recovery such as ClockworkMod. Here is a thread that details the steps:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1122694
There are enough posts and threads in the Development section to get you going. Just remember that the search button is your friend.
You're probably getting conflicting info, due to the timing.
AlpharevX was just released over the weekend. Any site or thread posted prior to that will probably say that you can't S-OFF.
As far as actually doing the S-OFF, I found the info in the link below to be quite helpful.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1130346
Thanks guys. I'm no stranger to the search function, but it was a bit confusing and just wanted to hear someone say it can be done!
Waiting to get a 16gb sd card and will give it a go then.
Brought the phone a couple of days ago....when can I expect the Gingerbread OTA?
im in uk and have had the update for some time now (id guess a month?)
a flashed rom is MUCH better
Have checked for updates and still nothing? Will wait for my 16gb card and give s-off and flashing a go. Came from a Samsung Symbian S60 phone so have had my fair share of experiance with flashing and custom ROMs. I would tend to recommend them also...made my life with Symbian almost barable. Cant go online with it now as battery nearly dead, which is pretty surprising as had it nearly 3 days now fully charging it every night
UPDATE:
Downloading the GB OTA now....woohoo. Maybe a silly question, but does it save to the sd card. Reason I ask is looking to upgrade to a 16gb card soon.
Also found a really good tutorial on how to improve battery performance.

[Q] A few questions about mods, from a total n00b

I have a Sprint HTC hero with original everything.
I've been wanting to do a mod but that brings up a few questions.
1) A lot of places say the CM7 mod from here is great for this phone but I clicked around and can't find a list of things it changes/improves. Why would I install a mod and will most things continue to work (market places, email, phone utilities, purchased apps).
2) All roms have those warnings that they void warranty. How often do they brick the device? Is this something I should worry about?
Sorry for the noobish questions but I am looking towards modding the hero but I want to make sure I don't make it worse.
1.) well basically MOD's are roms that people cook themselves from the scratch android or from a base like for example the DesireHD android base. They can do things varying from the look and feel of android to adding elements like being able to browse Privately on your browsers. i know that CM7 allows you to do that. Being able to flash different roms opens up a even bigger Android World.
2.) I have been flashing back and forth for a long time and not once have i bricked the device. Besides not like a little system restore wont fix anything. Also if you happen to send you device into maintenance or repair just restore you phone back to factory settings. All of it is reversible. When i first started out it helped me to really read NOOB forums so i didn't do something i would regret, but you should have nothing to really worry about.
reply from a still nearly noob, although i read alot about roms already and flashed my sgs2. ill just attemt to help you a little here.
1) i now flashed lite'ning rom on my phone as there is no cm7 for it yet. once realeased i will also flash it as i also read that it is the most widely used rom with best support. within a thread of the specific rom there should be a list of improvements/major changes or what will be added if you flash the rom. these and mostly more battery life and/or more speed are the reasons people flash roms. after flashing the phone you will have all the things still working, sometimes even better. for apps it depends on the rom. mine for example didnt require a wipe that delets all you data on the phone. others (as i think cm7 also) require a wipe of all you on-phone personal data apps and so on (not sd card if im not mistaken, please correct me!)
2)yes, you void warranty if you flash a custom rom, root or do sth else on the firmware not published by the manufacturer. when i flashed and overflashed my phones rom for several time already i haven't had any problems. and as i read all over the net/xda there is just a very little chance to brick your phone and even there you might have possibilities to revive it, i think. but im not sure on this, cosider others informations first!
hope i could help you a little from noob to noob and enjoy flashing roms. oh and of course have a look in the htc hero android development section for roms!
cheers!
