[Q] USB Tether APP for Captivate Root Users - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok Guys,
I got rooted, I installed Wireless Tether App for Root Users.
On my personal Laptop, I can connect to the WiFi Hotspot. Works Great!!
On my Work Laptop, I cannot connect to the same WiFi Hotspot because..
"Your network administrator has blocked you from connecting to this network".
I was told that AdHoc WiFi networks are blocked on my Work Laptop. So what are my options now?
I was wondering about USB tether. How to get that? Please suggest.
Thanks

Install a 2.2 rom and use MobileAP, it's an infrastructure hotspot. I can even tether my Android tablet to it. I have used Cognition and now using Serendipity. Awesome. Simply awesome.

I second this. You can even tether other devices to a 2.2 device with no troubles at all. Even wireless tether goes wonky on me sometimes, but mobile AP just works
You could also try Easytether. Although it costs money, and involves installing the software on your computer, it works. I used it with my not-so-fantastic G1 from forever ago. (to see this app in the market, you may need the market access apk.)
Hopefully this helps a bit.

I am stuck at updating the Software. I Click on Software Update in the Settings Menu and it say "Communication in Progress..." this goes on forever and never does anything.
Do I have to undo Root? to update the software to 2.2.
You say "Install a 2.2 rom" can you provide some instructions where and how?

[Q] Tethering my SGT to pc

I have installed the Wireless tethering and when I try to connect my pc using my tab, it will not get pass the gateway..it shows limited connection on my pc, however, my tab is showing like it is actually sending and receiving packets...How do I fix this issue?
Hi Fechina,
When you say you have installed wireless tethering, what exactly do you mean? The reason I ask this is because my GT-P1000T has it already built in to the firmware (Froyo 2.2). I just go to Settings -> Mobile APN and turn it on... Works like a charm every time. I can also set my WEP/WPA encryption if I choose to.

Did you set your TAB APN security to have a password, because other computers could already be connecting to your SGT, that's why you see it sending and receiving packets.
Yes, I have a password..
@andychud I am rooted but still on the stock rom..I had to install the Wireless Tether for root in order to access it...I cannot find any custom roms for the Sprint tab..

Hi Fechina,
Did you manage to get to the bottom of this yet or are you still unable to tether?
So, are you saying the the stock ROM you are using doesn't have wireless tethering built-in to it & you have installed some 3rd party tethering app? I'm sorry, but I don't fully understand the nature of your problem. If you could give more details, I'll try to help.

I see that you have stock froyo which is by default already have the ability to act as a wireless access point. Why you have to install Wireless tethering I don't understand. Anyway here is the proceedure I use if I want to connect my pc to the tab
http://deinfotech.blogspot.com/2010/12/samsung-galaxy-tab-as-wireless-access.html
If on the other hand you want to connect your Galaxy tab to your pc as an adhoc network then you will have to replace the wpa supplicant file with a modified one here-http://www.megaupload.com/?d=G299FMBE
Your gt is rooted so this can be done easily.

Masqed Crusader: effective or defective?

Mobile ap isn't working for me any more. *sad face* The market app called Masqed Crusader screwed it up. Supposedly it only changed my dns from stock to goggle's dns. The whole point is to speed up the network. Unfortunately I think it may have changed other settings too because mobile ap will appear to connect but won't transmit any data. Even after uninstall the settings won't revert back to normal. Need to know how to find my original settings so I can try to set it back. Also, has any one else tried this app out with success?

It's worked fine for me. Doesn't make a huge difference, but never had any problems.

It tells you that tether won't work when you activate it. Just reboot your phone, or go back into the app and revert settings.
I'm surprised there aren't more posts on this. I've done every trouble shoot possible. My on board tether is completely shot (usb and wireless). I can still connect to the internet and found an app called PDAnet for usb tether, but even wifi tether from google will throw my phone into a kernel panic... No help at all guys?

Problem w/wifi tethering after install Gingerbread

Hi Forum,
I cannot get my Sprint tab to see my phone after installing Gingerbread. My computer can see the phone and connect it, but the tab won't. Before Gingerbread, I was able to scan and connect to my phone and tether just fine. I tried diff. wifi tethering app. Currently use Barnacle. My tab is not rooted, but that should not be a problem.

thanks!
I was in a hurry! Fixing the wife issue is going to be a lots more difficult.

which version of GB do you have installed? Is it the stock sprint update? Have you tried the WPA supplicant fix for it yet?
I using Sprint OTA Gingerbread, 2.3.4. Build number EF17. I have not tried the WPA supplicant fix. I did not have problem with this issue on Froyo. I will research on this. I would like some tips if you got them. Thank you !
I found a link on the issue, but require root. I am reluctant to take this step. It is not that I don't know how to use Odin, but removing root is a pain.
Here is the link to WPA supplicant if any interested.

from everything i've read, you won't be able to connect to ad-hoc mode wireless (most wifi tether apps) without the wpa supplicant patch. you might look into a wifi tether app that will do infrastructure mode to get that working again.
@ pvtjoker42,
Thank you for the tip. I did some further research and the Wifi Tether app works in infrastructure mode too. If any one interested, here is how you do it. Choose device profile- I chose Samsung Galaxy S. I also tested Samsung Galaxy Indulge. Under Setup-Method, choose Softap ( master). Now your Samsung Tab will see the phone. This app drains battery like no tomorrow, much more than Barnacle.

PDANet

Has anyone tried PDANet for tablets with the 7.7 yet? I could never get it to work with my P1010 but I am hoping it will work with this one.

First of all, of course you couldn't get PDANet to work on your old P1010, it's a WiFi only device, and PDANet is an app designed to share your mobile (3G) connection via WiFi, Bluetooth, or USB. What exactly did you hope to accomplish with PDANet on a WiFi only device?
Finally, assuming you got the 3G 7.7 (P6800) and not the WiFi 7.7 (P6810), you don't need PDANet at all in order to share your 7.7's mobile 3G connection to other devices. It has mobile tethering right out of the box. Just go to Settings ==> Wireless and networks ==> Tethering and portable hotspot.
Done!
I am sorry I did not give enough information. I wanted to use my droidx as a server to get internet access for my p6810. I do this with my phone and tablet PC. I now know that it is extremely limited with honeycomb.

Ok, I understand now.
In this case, you shouldn't really need any additional software for your P6810, assuming the tethering software on your DroidX supports WiFi tethering. You should be able to connect the P6810 to your DroidX just the same as you would connect to any other WiFi AP.
I do need another solution as I don't want to pay Verizon another $20/month to tether.

I haven't tried the bluetooth feature yet. I use the USB tether because of the internet share feature when using USB and the PDAnet software on my laptop. I still need WiFi for other devices such as my TV and Rand McNally Truck GPS. PDAnet was a big save for me when I could not root.
Do you have any connection drops using bluetooth? I lose bluetooth connection to my speaker system about once a day.

Yes.. I have notice connection drop using Bluetooth. Not sure why? If I need phone charge I use USB tether. Your right WiFi has other benefits like for multi devices. I'm a big fan of WiFi but Bluetooth or USB tether will do for now.
I rarely use WiFi on Rand McNally Truck GPS. I use my phone app to stay up to date with the weather.

Did you know that if you use USB Tether on PDAnet that you can use the WiFi Share (beta) on the PDAnet software on your computer. It seems to work very well. Only problem I have had is it shows up for bluetooth as an option also, but I can't seem to get it to work with bluetooth. I get an error 19.
edit: I just got WiFi sharing to work with BT. Had to reboot the computer.
Awesome!! I just tried it and it work. I connected my Rand McNally truck GPS thru WiFi Share (beta) using USB tether than I tried BT and WiFi Share on my laptop worked as well. Now we have USB Bluetooth and WIFI using only PDAnet.

Ok. The most recent version is G930PVPU2APC5. This update locked down the apn settings. It would be interesting to hear if anyone on the current software version can still use pdanet for wifi hotspot.

I took the update and PDAnet still works. PDAnet does nothing with the APNs. Instead you have to install PDAnet on both the phone and PC. The wifi hotspot is on the PC side using PDAnet software to do the share.

Yes. Usb tether works this way. And to tether through a pc and use the pc to create wifi. However, pdanet will also activate the native wifi hotspot capabilities of the phone itself. When I open pdanet+foxfi and hit "Activate wifi hotspot" it turns on the wifi hotspot of my phone. No pc involved.

You are correct the FoxFi part of PDAnet does have WiFi but it only works for us if we are paying for the hotspot and it then uses our allocated hotspot data. ie. I pay for 6gb a month and it will use that up. With that being the case I might as well just use it directly from the phone and not use FoxFi. If you are not paying for hotspot I do not believe it will work. If I'm wrong I'd like to know though.

You're right. It's been so long since I have used an non rooted phone. Been getting free hotspot for years. Right now I have altered my apn settings for the free hotspot.

I tried to activate Wifi hotspot PDAnet on the phone but it gave me "Hotspot Error" You are not subscribed to the Hotspot Service. Fail to activate Hotspot. Me paying an extra monthly fee for Wifi is not going to happend. This is why we need root among other things. If your Hotspot Wifi is activated on your phone then there is no need for PDAnet
It seems to have the same problem regular hotspot does for me after update. Keeps asking me to purchase plan. Have to reboot and quickly turn on. Glad that works our I'd be sol. Anyone else have a reliable method? My APN settings are locked out also now.

Even if paying for Wifi, PDAnet does still help (not with wifi but with USB or BT tether) by not using up are allotted data. I go through my allotted data rather quickly. I'm an over the road driver and use internet for many things to include weather on my truck gps, normal things such as email and system updates, and for entertainment (Games and movies).

I'm OTR myself and I know what you mean. I use my laptop for everything its my entertainment system. TV, movies, software, games I rely heavily on tethering my laptop with my phone. I even D/L movies and save them for later where there is no Internet like the Rockies. Thumbs up for PDAnet 2 thumbs up when root is here.
I'm thoroughly aggravated. I have Boost mobile plan with a hotspot. As I live on a houseboat, it's very important to me and 8gb isn't enough. A Boost rep gave me foxfi info. But I get error that my provider won't allow hotspot so I must tether or bt. Now I downloaded foxfi on ex who has Boost but not a hotspot. He can use the option of Foxfi hotspot, tether, or bt. I'm thinking of buying separate phone just for this.
Please verify with me is foxfi working with sprint gs7? I am thinking of upgrading and need to know what phone to get. please advise, anyone?

I am the same. Not so much movies, but all sorts of software. If I had to rely on my laptop for visual entertainment as well, I don't think it or me could handle it. I already fill up 5 virtual desktops, switch between windows and Linux and would punch my own mother in face for, like, 500% more screen space, or even just the ability to lower the dpi or increase the resolution past 1366x768... But currently, even with an alfa 36N and 9dBi antenna, the WiFi here is just plain ****. The burger King WiFi accross the street is better, but I can't can never get the login page to come up. so my phone is my sole Internet source.
I will say one thing, I really regret going with the nougat beta. I've been meaning to revert back so I can reroot because the Hotspot was unlimited and much more stable. That and the beta is super sluggish, at least for me. Some of the newer features were cool, but not nearly worth giving up root. But I let it get to the point where backing up and making the switch back will be an a 6 hour engagement, and I keep putting it off.
Amazing thanks
