[Q] Captivate one click root failed to initialize - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm running 2.2 currently and would like to remove all the AT&T crapware, so I'm trying to root the phone using the one-click program. I am able to download it and extract it but when I try to run the application I get the "failed to initialize" message and that's it. Is there something I'm missing somewhere? I am seriously new to all this phone rooting stuff so please be gentle with me as I am not familiar with a lot of the terminology.

Update, new problem
I uninstalled and reinstalled the Captivate's drivers. Even did a factory reset on my phone to make sure it wasn't something on my end.
Firmware version is currently 2.2, I897UCJI6
Kernel version 2.6.32.9
[email protected] #1
Build
Froyo.UCJI6
Ok, so I was able to get the program going, but now, when I click on the "one click root" button I get an error message... Where am I screwing up? I'm on debugging mode and the computer recognizes my device when I plug it in.
Can somebody please help? I really want to unload the bloatware from my phone.
You can email me at [email protected] if anybody has a solution for me please.

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.
For example:
<configuration>
<system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>
When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.

I had the same issue at first, but I realized that my memory card was still in. I unmounted it, removed it, tried it again and it worked like a charm. If your memory card is it, try the same thing and it might work.

Unmounting and removing the external SD card is a good tip.
Also play around with the USB Debugging setting...try it both with and without.
Remember not to tell it to mount your phone (that is do not choose Connect to USB Storage), when you plug into the USB.

Extract data.img

Hello,
I have some backup files in the format .img.
Most of them it is possible to extract with unaffy but for data.img I receive unaffys.ex has stopped working.

Anyone know how to solve this?
I do have a Spritebackup also if anyone know how to extract such files (.sbf) instead.

Which version of unyaffs did you use? I've seen old versions floating around that sometimes don't work properly for some files.
Here is a version I compiled from the latest source with some unofficial fixes added. It's worth a try at least.
In the past I've used the the emulator and specified my data.img to be loaded, then used adb to pull the wanted files...
C:\temp\android-sdk-windows\tools>emulator.exe -help
Android Emulator usage: emulator [options] [-qemu args]
options:
-sysdir <dir> search for system disk images in <dir>
-system <file> read initial system image from <file>
-datadir <dir> write user data into <dir>
-kernel <file> use specific emulated kernel
-ramdisk <file> ramdisk image (default <system>/ramdisk.img
-image <file> obsolete, use -system <file> instead
-init-data <file> initial data image (default <system>/userdata

[Q] Splash screen requirements

Do splash screens for the evo 4G "have" to be 24bit RGB color bitmap, or can they be an 8bit Jpeg or png format?
Also, I noticed it said only for "unrevoked forever", is that true too?
Let's try the search function here 1st buddy. Or just refrence my sig
oh no, I wanted a reply from someone who had an answer.
The 'Search' function has all the answers............and yes for HTC devices splash screen is 24bit rgb bmp. If you SEARCH there is tools posted here to change that screen fairly easily. Happy searching.
I had found the thread, downloaded the flasher, wrar program, changed the photo to bmp, and all I get is the error that a lot are seeing:
Some mention fastboot. Is that something thats suppose to occur automatically or do you have to power the phone up into it first then plug in the cable and execute. If so how do you get to fastboot?

With all due respect bro, you should start in your device's deciated thread here on XDA. Doing a 2 sec. google peek I found this 'Reboot your HTC Evo 4G into “fastboot” by turning it off then pushing the power button WHILE holding down the volume down button' Make sure you do some reasearch before you start messing with this stuff bro, you could brick your device. This fastboot method is identical to my HD2, however w/HD2 you must have hspl flashed 1st or you will brick your phone trying to fasboot flash anything.

So i cant put my favorite ROM back on... the dalvik wipe did bad things to it. I am wondering if anyone knows why this would be happening. Also if there in not a fix that i can do is there a way to root my cappy in Unbuntu??
Thanks for all your help.
{UPDATE} So i figured out whet i was doing wrong.... I dragged the .exe file to my desktop (to have quick access to it when i needed it) not realizing that it needed to be in the directory that the files are located, so that was the problem... i want to leave this post here so that any one who runs into the same problem can find out what will make it work again

Problem solved after updating to osx 10.6
there seem to be issues between Heimdall 1.3 on Leopard 10.5 and certain binaries. Heimdall command line does not execute and just crashes.

[Q] Bricked or not bricked ? That is the question! --- Part 2

A bit more than a year ago I posted the following question:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/hp-touchpad/help/brick-bricked-question-t3015736
Basically I got possible boot stuff ( software/partition etc) corrupted as the TouchPas won't boot normally.
But do have some connectivity in the Palm (bootie) mode ( HOME-POWER-VOL.UP ) I can issue the following commands and boot into some minimal Linux system.
#1 Hold the HOME-POWER-VOL.UP buttons until the TouchPad enumerate on USB as:
Palm:
Product ID: 0x8070
Vendor ID: 0x0830 (Palm Inc.)
Version: 10.00
Speed: Up to 480 Mb/sec
Manufacturer: bootie
Location ID: 0xfd130000 / 4
Current Available (mA): 1000
Current Required (mA): 500
Extra Operating Current (mA): 0
#2 DFU-UTIL
$ dfu-util -d 0830:8070 -R -D tpdebrick-v004/moboot-dfu-v004
#3 FASTBOOT
$ fastboot flash bootmem /tpdebrick-v004/TPToolbox-Headless-v004
At this point the TouchPad enumerates as follow on the USB port:
CDC Composite Gadget:
Product ID: 0xa4aa
Vendor ID: 0x0525 (PLX Technology, Inc.)
Version: 3.27
Speed: Up to 480 Mb/sec
Manufacturer: Linux 2.6.35.7+ with msm72k_udc
Location ID: 0xfd130000 / 5
Current Available (mA): 500
Current Required (mA): 500
BSD Name: en4
#4 LOGIN THE LINUX SYSTEM
$ ssh -i tpdebrick-v004/ssh-key [email protected]
From there, is there anything I can do like DD-ing one of the boot partitions... copy software to restore TWRP or similar recovery software?
