[Q] Where to now? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok so 2.2 offically came out for captivate today.
I know There is Cog 3.03v which I am running.
Cog 4 came out like 2 days ago.
And I don't have any clue when a Stable rom is coming out for 2.3 Gingerbread.
I am probably going to flash stock (thats odin right?) tonight.. then go to Cog 4 tonight.
I am not really interested in gingerbread theme's so much as the actual changes.
Can anyone break down why cog 4 is an entirely different rom than 3.03v?
My understanding is its a modified version of the stock at&t froyo although I could be wrong.. So I am guessing 3.03v is a ported version of froyo from some similar phone.
Any idea what is going to give best over all performance?
I would like to think 2.3 gingerbread is coming out soon in the form of a rom.. but, I am also not holding my breath.
Advice would be appreciated.

You could easily answer this question yourself by reading the first couple posts in those two rom's respective threads.

I read first 3 or 4 post on each one.
Neither of them answered what I wanted them to.
Being blunt I'd be grateful if you proved me wrong.

Custom Rom Options?

Hey everyone. I'm posting here because I have a friend with a Captivate and I'm trying to get him to root his phone.
I sent him the link to the 1 click root but I don't know what rom to have him flash. I have an EVO and in the EVO forums we have a sticky with all the custom roms listed so it's easy to see what's there. Is there anything like that for you guys?
He's basically looking for a stable 2.2 rom.

The Captivate DEV scene isn't too large right now, (most of them are in the Vibrant section) We have few custom roms, but the ones you can find, along with mods can be found in the Development section of Captivate.

This is very true. Most went to vibrant because they were ex-G1 users. However the good news is the most of the coding will be the same so they are relatively easy to port. I have a feeling the captivate will not be getting as much dev action, and most people are switching from windows mobile or iPhone and have no android dev experience. But it will eventually speed up
Don't have him flash a custom ROM just to flash a custom ROM. Right now there are a limited number of ROMs, and he can read up on them in the dev to see if there is anything changes in the newer firmwares that would make it worth his time to flash. AFAIK, there are no fully functional, stable 2.2 ROMs (although the leaked build for the i9000/international version does mostly work, I think). There are also a few leaked updates to the 2.1 firmware.

Yea, that's why I am asking if there are any stable 2.2 roms yet. But as I gather there aren't. I'll just tell him to keep his eyes open here.
I've been using Cognition 2.2b6 for about 4 months now with no problems. Seems to be the most stable rom out there for the captivate.
I've been using Cognition 2.3b3 for several weeks and it's working great, the only issue for me is the android email process crashes on startup, I use the gmail app anyway, so its a non issue for me... It took 3 or 4 days to get the correct order of opperations, it seems not everything you find on XDA works for every Captivate, I guess AT&T keeps disabling settings and crapware crippling the phone... But the order that worked for me was:
STOCK AT&T 2.2 FROYO:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=797282
ROOT:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
JI6 KERNEL:
I did not root with the link in this post (was already rooted when I found it)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=804226
COGNITION:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=786532
SIDELOAD:
Option two worked for me, option one did not.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=738376
Now that I've done all this I could NEVER go back to stock, it's like having a completely different phone... Unbelievable upgrade. F-U AT&T.
Hands down Cognition to start. When he's ready to move on Cognadian Bacon!
Swyping...please read slowly!
Cool. Thanks for all the replies. I just flashed the latest Cognition beta for him yesterday actually. He's so much happier. Haha.

I was gonna say perseption. Its really the most captivate friendly of the ports for other galaxy s phones. You get the reorient kernel with overclock undervoult, universal lagfix, clockwork mod instead of 2e recovery, and you get working bluetooth audio, normal batery life, multiple fonts, password/pin number/pattern security, other things i forgot.
Axura looks amazing but noone will answer my questios about bugs. And there is no known issues listing.

how stable is 2.2 for captivate?

Hi all, I have been trying to read through the forums and get up-to-date with respect to the latest captivate roms. How stable are the froyo ones? I am not a huge fan of the touchwiz ui and would definately prefer some of the vanilla experience found on my nexus one. Do any of the roms bring that to the captivate? Any general advice I should be aware of? thanks.
The only advice I can give you is to follow the rules and post these types of questions in the Captivate General forum, or in a ROM's own thread, this is the development forum.
ah, my mistake. Perhaps an admin can help move it. Sorry
Very stable if you stick with Cognition.
Moderately to very stable if you stick with an i9000 ROM. A few known issues but many use it
Beta and still needs more of their genius power if you go with Cyanogen. I can't wait for them to finish this
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Froyo has been stable for me in both versions JI6 and JJ4. This is before I flashed Cognition. JJ4 is a lot less buggy and a bit faster, but both are noticeably slower than JH7. I still kept them installed because of all the extras that are only available on Froyo, and the overall speed was good enough to be usable. Cognition adds more speed, and several extra nice touches, but even before that Froyo was good enough for me. I'd never go back to JH7.
Actually I've had more problems with Cognition than with the i9000 roms. Of course I haven't used Cog since I found the i9000 roms. They are more like stock Android than the Captivate roms with the ATT crap removed.
The only problem I've had with the i9000 roms is with the alpha and early beta versions. They are just as stable as any other rom.

I have tried both extensively and both were stable but i9000 gives me the features I want plus it feels faster than any Cognition.

Wrong forum, but I will give my 2 cents anyways.
Best ROM I used is Axura beta1 with the JPP modem. You have to follow the directions on install to a "T", but it is well worth it as it is by far the fastest and cleanest ROM I have ever used. Cognition is also a great ROM, I just prefer Axura.

[Q] After flashing Cognition 3.04 my phone seems slower?

It was my first ROM flash, and along with it i decided to get the gingerbread keyboard, too. I noticed that my captivate seems slower in general now. Screen transitions and stuff like that is fine, but opening apps is usually slower. Like the phone lags a lot. I have it OCLF'd. At least, i did before flashing. It seems to not have erased it.
Can anyone tell me what the sudden slowdown is about? Am i just paranoid?
thanks in advance.
You should not attempt to have two lag fixes. Cognition has voodoo lag fix built in. I would recommend you flash back to stock and then flash Cognition.

Can't i just un-lagfix the OCLF?
Go back to stock and flash Andromeda 1.1 or 2.1. I've tried many ROMs including that one and nothing matches the speed of Andromeda. I highly recommend it!
Did you disable olcf before flash? If not flash stock start over. Any one who says rom x is best is saying a personal opinion, not fact

I can't remember if i did...:/ i have short term memory loss haha. But i just noticed that lagfixing with oclf is impossible since it says i have another lag fix installed...so this is voodoo? things make so much more sense now. so should i do anything?

I haven't tried any of the other rom but you are right about the speed.... I get zero lag... I'm really impressed with this rom that I have no plans on changing.
Cog is a good ROM but by no means the fastest one out there. Serendipty, Phoenix, Paragon, Andromeda will all give you a much faster / smoother experience.

Then why is cog so popular?
I just flash to cog yesterday and it was my first time I did this in my SGS (previously I had a hacked Nexus One). I liked it to much, I'm happy with it.
In weeks later I'll give a try to those roms you mencion like Andromeda or Phoenix 'cause u' say they're faster.

Cog is like the noob default rom.
Be careful when flashing Andromeda because I soft-bricked my phone for 3 days, now I can't even use unless I am somewhere with at least 3-4 bars. I might have screwed it up when I flashed it.

Any decent 2.3 ROMs for the Captivate?

I had a look through the Android development section and couldn't really find anything above 2.2. My GF has a captivate and she's finally willing to do away with the carrier installed stuff.
And IF there are no 2.3 ROMs (which really doesn't make any sense because I've been running 2.3 on my DZ since the start of January), what are some of the better 2.2 ones?

2.3 ROMs aren't out yet.
But there are some really nice 2.2.1 ROMs, di11igaf's rom being one of them

Serendipity is the best one I've found, Mike has a great eye for design, and he and Chance have great ideas on functionality. They pay close attention to detail and update the ROM frequently with easily flashed .zips in recovery (no wiping involved unless it's a major update). It's built on 2.2.1.

Care to enlighten the masses on this? Cyanogen's been trolling (IMO) on his wiki:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Samsung_Galaxy_S:_Flashing_CyanogenMod
"NOTE: As of right now CyanogenMod is not available for the Samsung Galaxy S family. Please check the wiki or the Samsung Galaxy S sub-forum for updates."
But then again, I suppose if you have a large amount of expertise and win in your arsenal, you could fit all of the witchcraft to the Captivate, unless I'm a complete noob and Cyanogen got a ROM hidden away that I'm not aware of.
Serindipity is one that I've been looking into. I have her phone ready to rock and roll, rooted + CWM. Just need to decide on a ROM
I find it strange that the Galaxy S lineup still doesn't have a publicly available 2.3 ROM... considering the first device to ship with 2.3 was the Nexus S. IIRC it has a near identical hardware set as the Fascinate, Captivate, Vibrant, I9000 etc.
LOVE Pargaon RC6....Great ROM! Stable, fast, and great GPS! It is 2.2.1. No 'working' 2.3 roms out as of yet!

As for it not making sense, The whole reason you have been able to run it is that HTC likes putting the source code up as to where we are still trying to get it from Samsung. Heck 2.2 official just dropped to day. lol
You will get 10 different answers as to some good roms. Just have a read in the threads and chose one that seems good to you.

[Q] AtomicFusion 1.5 vs. Cognition 5.2 (KF1 ROMs)

Greetings all-
Been reading the threads of both of the aforementioned ROMs, and, believe it or not, I'm wondering what the main functional differences are between them even though I've read thru all bazillion pages. Does anyone have any input?
I have tried both and they are similar to each other. Slightly different small bugs but Atomic Fusion was faster till Cognition got EXT4, so they are about the same now in terms of speed. I stuck with Cognition as it is closer to a stock feel.
AF has a newer Touchwiz, and can have ext 4.
Dg has moved on to the sgs2 and is looking for a dev to take over cog.
AF is made by team phoenix so it is still maintained/updated
What would be really awesome if samsung would release the kf1 source code to get better kernels for both.
