Is anyone working on getting Read to Me to work? - Nook Color General

I have Gingerbread working nicely thanks to this wonderful forum, but sadly I am scared that my kids will kill me without the Read to Me option. Is anyone working on this?

not that i'm aware of. there are lots of folks on xda that want the B&N stock apps to be ported, but i haven't seen that anyone is actively working on them.

thanks was just reaching out to find out so I could have an idea, would be nice though. Thanks again for the info.

There are two problems facing us:
1) The Nook app is not open source, so B&N can slap us around with a cease and desist, if devs go posting a modified version of it. This is the same reason that all the other non stock OS builds modified the boot image.. it's B&N's.
2) Even if that weren't a problem, the special nook app relies on the heavily modified framework of their Eclair build. So, while it is not impossible, it is unruly, and combined with #1, doesn't make for a project worth undertaking..

Amen to that. You know - i ahve seen other phones have semi-working rom builds created from the SDK images. I am sure its just a pip dream, but damn it would be sweet if we could be working on honeycomb now....
it's possible to extract a image, but then it would be slow as hell.
not worth the trouble porting it

I dunno.. doubt it would be slower than Froyo on an SD card.
I made a zombie out of the honeycomb preview and one of the nook kernels.
Touch input doesn't work, no hardware acceleration etc.
Well then get to work dblue.....
From the nookCOLOR
If we can get the Nook Color running gingerbread that would beyond awesome, honeycomb and I might just piss myself.

I love it (and thanks for trying exactly what i was thinking of)! Sure, it isn't fully working, but it provides a TON of hope that with some work, Honeycomb can be made to work.
Once the source code is on AOSP then getting working ROMs for other platforms should be much easier. I think one of the problems we might see is driver support since the underlying kernel for Honeycomb might be different.
It does indeed run very slow so far.
Touchscreen is working now. I'll try to get the graphics acceleration running over the weekend that should help with performance.
(and I think it's stupid that I can't post or reply in the development forum without having more than 10 posts.)

If you get a bootable SD card out of this, you'd become a legend on these forums (At least in my eyes)
If you don't, you still get huge respect for getting this working on your device.

It is an effort to keep people from finding out about XDA on yahoo or something and then coming here and going into the dev section saying make it work for me...NOW!!
Which sadly happens a great deal. Seen it many times in my years around here.
I'm sure that you will appreciate it when you have less of that to deal with when you hit another few posts and can start your first thread in the dev section.
You obviously have something to contribute so just post replies to a few posts in the general section here and you will be on your way.
Looking forward to the work you have started!!
Agreed - please keep up your work, and hit up the dev section after 10 posts. I would LOVE to see work progress on honeycomb!

flashable roms? (get rid of nook framework)

Just wondering why there are no "full" roms out that get rid of all the original nook stuff.
Probably showing my complete lack of knowledge here but thats ok
If anyone who has the skillz could let me know why this isn't possible yet I would love to know. Thanks!

I don't have the skills, but my guess (guess, opinion...fwiw ) is that while it might be possible, many users still want the functionality of the NC as a reader is some fashion.
You can always flash a rom then use Titanium Backup to freeze "nook stuff". Freeze apps one at a time, make sure the basics are still working, then keep going.
Nookie Froyo and CM7 are both under active development.
Neither is ready for general use.
I knew about cm7 but hadn't heard much about nooki froyo other then its current state.
thanks for the info
I understand there are driver issues and such to deal with on froyo and gingerbread but would it be easier to create a 'clean' 2.1 rom? this is kind of what I was thinking when I made the thread.
My guess is there's some stuff like Settings or Frameworks that would need to be edited, not just easily removed.

[Q] How to make the nook most functional? Lcddensity or anything else..

First I want to say, I normally don't post until I am pretty familiar with a device, but I have searched enough and played enough, that I hope my questions or posts don't sound stupid.
That said. I have modified many devices, none so much as my phone, and recently decided to say goodbye to stock(or at least keep it hidden on a sd card if I need it) nook.. I have tried every rom I can, and am now trying nightlies of cm7..
But what is the best setup to have the most market showing, and the most compatibility when you do download apps or apks? I know lcd density is a big factor of what will show up in the market, and the settings in build.prop can keep apps like netflix or tegra games from working(which I have fixed), or.. I am sure there is much more. But there is no updated faq thread that points everyone from asking the same questions, or getting the most up to date information
So the questions:
What are all the changes that you can make to ensure you have access on market and/or can run the most apps?
I am willing to do just about anything to my devices, but I would like to learn specifically for the nook what I can change to get the most out of it. Specifically anything that will make it possible to run tablet applications on it.
Flash MIUI. IMHO, your Nook is now perfect. Then fix Netflix.
LOL. Been to miui, done that. IMO if app developers were less afraid of negative feedback, and willing to beta test with a wider audience, or at least provide a downloadable apk.. this problem wouldn't exist.
Till then(sorry, I don't like MIUI), I guess I am lost.

If by perfect you mean a large phone then yes flash MIUI and use their 240 lcd density
OP:
Most so called tablet applications are Honeycomb only at this point. You shouldn't need to adjust anything to get Market access. If there is anything that folks are doing to get past Market filters then they should tell me.
You no longer have to edit your build.prop for Netflix if your using a release from the last month

I came across that today.
I think the difficulty of answering your question stems from the fact that there are so many different variables involved. What works for someone may not work for others based on the ROM, ROM version, other apps, settings, other fixes they have in place, etc. When I first flashed CM7 and then nightlies, I was under the impression that there would be one general answer to getting the Market fixed so I could download/install any apps and run them. Sadly, it doesn't seem to be so and what you do to fix one app or the Market on your device may be a different process than on someone else's device.

It is kinda sad, but this only seems to be true about the nook color from what I have seen. There IS a fair amount of development going on, but it seems to be almost totally into cm7. Other android devices I have done a fair amount of playing with, unless a problem is hardware based, or someone did something to their OS or an app they have.. everyone is having the same exact experience.. so I guess I expected similar here, but maybe there is just less development.
I guess I was looking for devs to point out the different things they manipulate, why, and what kind of results they get. For instance, supposedly I should see netflix in the market, but I don't. Not with cm7.0.3 or rc1 or any nightly I have flashed, even though there are plenty of posts that say I should.
I have netflix, and it works, but I am wondering what variables go into manipulating these things. Another example is Order and Chaos 1.0.2, a game that only works on a small list of devices, and just updated.. I tried changing multiple things, multiple ways, and everytime it would fail to boot. Turns out changing just these:
ro.product.model=SCH-I500
ro.product.brand=verizon
ro.product.name=SCH-I500
ro.product.device=SCH-I500
ro.product.board=aries
Made the game work again. Fingerprints, what os we are using, and so many other things just kept it from booting.. but the device doesn't seem to see anything differently in market than before.
Anyways, if anyone can contribute some ideas to this thread, what can be manipulated, why, and what to expect, I would appreciate it, even just for the learning experience.
Netflix only shows up in the market for the 16 or so "official" phones. The rest of us have to sideload the .apk.

I found multiple threads(not on xda, maybe that's the problem) that say on the latest cm7 it is supposed to show up..
I have been trying to do research on what I can change in the build.prop to make apps LIKE netflix show up, but what I really want is to be able to download a paid app called order and chaos. I was able to get the app itself to think it was a supported device, but no matter what changes I make, it won't let me download it in the market.
This is not the only thing I want, but this is what I want most of all. If I hadn't broken my samsung vibrant, I could load the apk from it and have a valid licensed game, but unless it is linked to the nook I won't be able to make in app purchases(like buying game time).
This matters because my replacement vibrant is coming in tomorrow, but I am going to sell it asap..

Yeah, I know we are idiots. All of our releases have been unstable, full of bugs and missing nearly every feature one could wish for. Please excuse us, but we really can't do any better. The fact that all ROMs that are not based off RUUs are CyanogenMod rip-offs should clearly tell you that we just can't get anything right at all.

You guys don't pay attention to the experimental thread do you? Seriously, over 160 attempts at a nightly build and still nothing that performs up to par with ogo2's 2.3.3 Sense UI ROM. Sure his is lacking WiFi AP functionality, but I can live with that.
I love how you call everyone elses' ROM a rip-off of a CM ROM. Get a life guys, no one would attempt to use your builds unless said person was extremely lazy.

I know I'm wasting my time here and I really don't care anyway.
Still I think I have to clarify that I'm not talking about people using some "builds". I'm talking about the source code.
If you want to build a ROM for the Legend (and nearly every other device out there) you've got two choices: Push some files from official releases (RUUs) around and zip them, or compile from source.
As a matter of fact there's no project out there that releases working source code (for anything but Google's official devices) except for CyanogenMod.
Video encoding or decoding? msm* support? Backported code for ancient libcamera, libril and framework support for said ancient libraries? GPS backport or implementation? Kernel backports for Gingerbread? Yeah, good luck finding that somewhere else (no, I don't mean the CAF repositories where we are copying from and giving credit of course).

"Get a life"? Come on, don't be ridiculous.
MD5-sums can be quite revealing by the way. Or boot messages (like "Welcome to CyanogeMod" in MIUI). Some people were even charging for shady rip-offs – that's why the CM team ultimately decided to close down development and switch to "release when it's done".

Sorry, but you didn't understand the concept of a nightly build? There are no "attempts at a nightly build" and they are not even meant for users. Nightly builds are there to see if current code in the repositories still compiles. Nothing else.

Unfortunately not only for the Legend but for most other devices too.
Android was said to be open but in fact it's just proprietary crap again. No developer wants to spend months doing the work of forty CM devs, so they either join CM – or sometimes steal their work declaring it as their own – or use (or combine) binaries from official releases.
If you didn't care, you would be in other developers threads attacking their attempts at making something that just may work better than what you're pushing out.
Face the facts; People want more choices other than CM. I am willing to admit that CM 6.1 was a damn good ROM when it came out, but I can't for life of me figure out why you guys can't live up to the same expectations with CM7.
I have been testing the NewSense 1.0 RC's (HTC Salsa ROM) for some time, and I as I said; Without the lack of AP support, it works well and does not have the crash prone problems that I have seen with 7.0.3, and 7.1 RC1.

Their earlier releases certainly used CM sources with modified framework and apps. I don't know what they are doing now – but as they don't release their sources I can accuse them of using modified CM source code as much as I want without ever being able to prove it so I refrain from doing that.

Instead of making vague accusations you could have filed bug reports a long time ago. CM is a community project and nothing without its community.
It sometimes still makes me sad that for some people whining doesn't seem to be a problem but as soon as it comes to writing a good bug report they come up with various excuses.

[Q] 's on Root Security, Tablet apps on a Note, Paranoia & More.

Is there currently anything I should stay way from that doesn't currently work or isn't stable with 4.0 Ice-cream Sandwich?
Will Adobes Apps (Photoshop Touch for example) work on the SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE/GT-N7000? I ask this because said app is made for a tablet...but the GALAXY NOTE isn't your average tablet since it's a phone? It meets the resolution requirements... just not the size. Hence the confusion. This kind of thing is actually my biggest query at the moment...perhaps I should broaden the question...If it is made for a standard tablet, will it work with this sort of tablet?Would Paranoid Android assist me in this concern? (I think it would based on what I have seen)
Once I have rooted- is there any way for ME to customize the UI and how the hardware (such as GPS and Ram) functions. As you may have gathered I know my away around Adobe Suite and I could at the very least do some of that... or do I just have to...ugh...what's the jargon word...
Flash the Rom with someone else's handy work?
Does anyone have a recommendations on where I should buy the Unlocked SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE/GT-N7000 Note? I just want to know the options I may have other than Amazon, Ebay, or Expansys.

Ok, if you can download it, Adobe it should work. You can try a custom rom which supports tablet mode should you not be able to download with normal dpi. That will enable tablet mode in market, after clearing market data and reboot it should become available for dl.
Currently there are a couple good stock ICS roms and a couple good custom roms. All (except cm9 xplodwild is safe, not other cm9) kernels are dangerous due to Brickrisk of known bug. However, all cm9 based suffer the bugs of cm9, speakerphone broken, high battery consumption, etc. Most have their own bugs on top.
Now ICS source is out wait a couple days as more custom roms and kernels will be build as well as bugfixes. And off course, support the devs with donations for coffee, so they stay awake and make no errors lmao .

1. No. Truth is, root or no root, you are equally vulnerable to malware. Just read the reviews and all before installing any, you know, 'unknown' app.
2. Wiping, factory resets and CWM. Although this is just for stock German ICS and older ICS ROMs like Stunner. New ROMs like Paranoid, CM9 are safe. Still in case you must search before you do anything with custom ROMs just to be on the safe side.
3. Can't find Photoshop Touch on the play store. But there must be a work around am sure. I am using Paranoid by the way.
4. You can pretty much flash a custom ROM and flash various themes and things. Don't know about RAM but you can over clock or under clock your processor. There are various tweaks scattered so just search for it and more often than not you will find it. Carbon tweaks are really good. Search them in themes and apps.

3. Can't find Photoshop Touch on the play store. But there must be a work around am sure. I am using Paranoid by the way. I actually have it linked...oh...no I don't. Ok... Easy Fix.
4. You can pretty much flash a custom ROM and flash various themes and things. Don't know about RAM but you can over clock or under clock your processor. There are various tweaks scattered so just search for it and more often than not you will find it. Carbon tweaks are really good. Search them in themes and apps. Haven't heard of Carbon tweaks before. Will look it up.

Sorry for that man! Was more than half asleep. I thought some other guy gave me a link to Photoshop touch app so I thanked 'him' for that. Happens!
